I do a lot of web programming (Python, JS and sometimes C/C++ for embed systems as a hoby)

I travel a lot, and now I carry 14inch 2kg HP Elitebook from 2013, its great machine but its a lot of weight and space.
When I do work I have monitors and actual keyboard and mouse, so I barely use the actual laptop keyboard and screen. But when I do, its mostly in trains/buses and I have around 4-5 hours of work time while doing so.

The screen is 14inch but not full HD.
And I use external hard drive at times.

No, I bought the version with the QHD screen. You should log in to windows and run the exe to fix that retarded adaptative brightness thing. It's annoying, but it's a quick fix and you're done. The only thing I did change was the WLAN card since broadcomm drivers suck to install on Linux, and the Intel one has more range anyway. It costed me like 15$ and 3 min to change. If you want to avoid this hassle, buy a refurb with the Intel card.

dunno but I'd highly recommend a used T420 business laptop if you can't afford an XPS 15.

Slap in a new 9-cell 94Whr battery in one and you got yourself 10 advertised hours of battery life (probably like 6-8 real life). A little heavy (4 lbs) but definitely worth it imho).
