Got a t440p and looking for a 2242 m.2 SSD

Why the fuck is the 2242 M.2 form factor so sparse? It's similar size to mSATA but with a different connection. mSATA SSD's are abundant but 2242 M.2 isn't, but why? Not enough demand for it? I thought there was quite a few laptops with 2242 M.2 slots. I've only been able to find KingSpec ones which every review says they die within 4 months, I've seen some ADATA ones but they're usually from very shady/obscure sites and sellers.

>>62178873
>>62178790

Read reviews, read feedback for seller, make sure you pay for it via paypal so if need be dispute the purchase and get a refund.

Most fake batteries will be the advertised size HOWEVER they will degrade much quicker. For my X220 I have a genuine 9cell direct from Lenovo, it's lasted 2 years and has only lost 6% capacity with something like 80 cycles but I recently got a "genuine" aka fake 9cell from the chinks and after 10 cycles it's already lost 7% capacity. Both are used with 90% charge limit. For $35 for a fake one I am not complaining though, it still lasts a good 6+ hours of continuous use/web browsing/watching videos/writing.

I have a x220 tablet and the pressure sensitive pen I have works in applications from Windows like notes and the handwriting tool, but for some reason I cannot get it to work in Paint Tool SAI or GIMP. Any fixes?

Anyone know what screws are used to hold the back panel on a T440P?

Had a similar problem with a back screw for my X230. I just went into a local computer store and the guy gave me the screw for free. Alternatively, look up screw kits for that model on eBay etc, if they have a list of which ones are included, you can work it out from there.

Alright, tempted to pull for a X220.

€130 for a bog-standard, ex-corporate model X220 in mint condition (sans sticks).
€?? for some sort of Samsung SSD.
€70-80 for geniune Lenovo 9-cell off Amazon.

Optional: IPS screen if I feel the LCD screen isn't doing it for me.

Am I doing it wrong?

How's the battery life of t430 with a 9 cell battery?
>>
hi!

Budget: ~600
Location: usa
Size: idk 14 inches but doesnt have to be exact. just not super small but can fit in a bookbag
Performance: enough to run a virtual machine on top of windows. also at least 6 hrs bat life of normal use (note taking, programming, reading sites)
Other requirements: can't be heavy.. i have a t420 and its too heavy for me to carry to class

budget isn't 100% set in stone. honestly debating on buying a macbook air at this point

What do you faggots think about the new AMD Thinkpads (A475 and A275)?
>>
Are there any Thinkpads with CRT screens that are still usable today?
>>
>>62186900
I was assigned an x230 when I was working at IBM. It was my first TP, and love at first sight. Later on I got to work on a T430, and now I own a T420.

I don't think you can go wrong with either, but consider this: if you will be using your laptop primarily from home, maybe with a dock-monitor-keyboard-mouse combination, the x230 will provide mobility. The T430 is more suitable to be used on its own, given the larger screen and resolution.

I myself am contemplating on getting an x230 with IPS and mod the keyboard and bios. I just don't have an ips monitor and a dock, so it would be a bigger expense than I am comfortable with these summer months.

Did newegg send me a t420 with the NVS 4200? The specs on the site only stated integrated graphics.

>>62188424
Nope, it's fine. Doesn't help of course if some frequencies are simply missing completely

the msata is SATA II and the hard drive bay is SATA III. I did some research since I bought an x220 tablet version. But I use an ssd with my x200T and it is still plenty fast even though it uses SATA II. Honestly unless you really need the extreme read speeds, you won't notice a huge difference in everyday tasks. Browsing around the OS will be pretty much equal, browsing the web will mostly be equal.

Interesting. Thinkwiki lists everything as MiniPCIe slots, but I guess the X220 2nd slot is actually msata and the WWAN cards just talk to the USB passthrough on the slot? Hey, I couldn't say. Someone in a past /tpg/ told me it would work, and it did. Same with having more than 8GB of useable RAM. Lenovo says it can take 8GB max, but I'm having no trouble with 12GB

One problem I can't solve, no matter how many times I post and ask for help is the GPU throttling. It might be partly heat related, but it often gets throttled independently of the CPU itself. I don't know what to make of it
>>
>>62190412
What do you mean by GPU trotting? Which GPU?
Newer thinkpads with dual core CPUs can use 16GB, quad cores 32GB RAM
>>
Anyone know what the fastest fan speed on the x220 is? I think mine isn't ramping up to full speed when it gets hot. I remember it being noisier before I reinstalled Ubuntu
>>
>>62190454
Throttling. It slows down when its under heavy load, normally due to temps. Problem is its seemingly doing it for other reasons that I can't pin down

Intel HD3000 (Sandy Bridge i5 iGPU), Ubuntu 16.04 with a 4.10 kernel, temps idle around late 50-60C, despite changing the thermal paste and replacing the thermal pad. I'm not sure what else I could do to improve the temps, so maybe there's some sort of ACPI or driver issue making the OS use the chips less efficiently
>>
>>62190544
50C idle is normal with Windows, with Linux you can expect 5C-10C more. It's normal

>>62190544
Sounds normal, I've got the same temps on windows with that GPU. There's no pad on mine though
I think the high performance modes of it work like turbo boost, meaning that they are not supposed to run at that speed for a long time
>>
>>62190566
Well, in that case, I still need to figure out how to stop the GPU from throttling. Maybe most current and happy x220 users are using a better configuration? Could Wayland help?
>>
>>62190596
By thermal pad I mean something inside of the laptop itself. There's a second area which I can't remember the name of that's cooled by the main heatsink, and it has a "thermal pad" in between it, instead of paste, because of a different in height. I accidentally threw away the original discounting it as dried paste, but ordered a new one after reading that it was necessary to use it over paste because paste would not allow contact between the component and heat sink with the height difference

T420's:

Only difference i see is the 7200 vs 5400 RPM between these two.

T430:

T420 has the classic keyboard layout and thinklight LED, much easier BIOS moddability
T430 has the chicklet layout (less keys, some versions with backlight) and has USB 3.0 ports, and only accepts genuine lenovo batteries
>>62192491
T60p kills it.
>>62192498
You should get an SSD anyway

im fucking pissed off. my 4 month old x220 charging port is fucked, i have to wiggle it for 5 mins to get it to charge

not only that, the fucking battery is dead, only gives about 30 mins of usage.

Im thinking of getting this:

worth?
>>
>>62192503
Buy a new charging port and replace it, it's not hard at all
But I'm suspecting the problem is the PSU cable
>>
>>62191899
You're much better off looking for deals on Ebay and Kijiji than you are buying refurbed stuff.
>>
>>62182784
>11e
The x130e, x131e and x140e are superior 11" thinkpads
>>
>>62192530
how can you tell? i already bought a new port 3 weeks ago
>>
>>62192501
>T60p kills it.
I also own a couple T60's and I prefer the X40, even though it's slower. It has better battery life and is so much more portable.
>>
>>62192501
Hmm, I may as well go with a T440 if I'm going for a SSD.

This seem reasonable?

https://www.amazon.com/Lenovo-ThinkPad-T440-NoteBook-Professional/dp/B072KPHQBP/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1504230999&sr=8-3&keywords=thinkpad+t440

Also are Thinkpad Ultrabooks worth considering? I've seen a few pop up in my searches.

no, no

Are there any necessary upgrades I should get for it or are they good as is at stock?

>>
>>62193006

>>
>>62190270

>>
>>62190976

Replace the bottom pan... there should be plenty of them on ebay.... should be cheap. No need to replace the whole machine.

Are new thinkpads worth it?

So my T420s wifi card is shit. I'm planning on getting a new one and installing a modded BIOS.

Does the modded BIOS affect the boot time by a lot?
>>
Anyone have any recommendations for upgrading an x220? I've had mine for about 6 years now and the only real thing I've done with it is replace the fan.
>>
>>62192958

where do you get the chink msata ssd?

SSD is a great upgrade, max the ram before it starts to get rare and expensive.
>>
>>62179164
I just ordered one from MyDigitalSSD. I think I had to go through their actual website
>>
>>62193245

Nope... i guess when the cpu throttles... it's loud so i bought a new fan/cpu heat sink on ebay for $6.
>>
>>62178812
Bullshit, disinformation from ass mad Lenovo shill.
>>
>>62193313
Not the E series
>>
Do all x230s and x220s have thinklights?
>>
>>62195116
yes, but the tablet version does not

also there are some that have a third antenna and do not have webcams, I'm not sure if that affects the thinklight as well, but these are really rare

Opinion on the X1 yoga? I plan in a few months to buy an OLED ThinkPad X1 yoga with 16 GB of RAM and 512gb SSD,

I have an old Toshiba laptop which is about on its last knees and I want to get something new

Just got my t430.
Should I format it? Would it be enough?

I got a dirt cheap E540 and want to upgrade its screen, as it's 1366x768 with very bad colour range.

After putting in the serial number and looking at other LCD assemblies on Lenovo's support site, which one would be the best option to replace it with?
