Okay, I just ordered a used X230 i7. The seller claims there is some wear that's "consistent with normal use" and that they "shouldn't affect the performance in any way". What are some things I can expect based on this statement?

I'm considering falling for this thinkpad meme. From what I've seen in the buyers guide, something in the x series would be idea for me, as i dont like heavier devices as much

Screen quality matters a lot to me.

What is the most customizable thinkpad? The idea of easily(?) being able to upgrade various parts greatly appeals to me. Testing out various upgrades and improving the specs and build over time sounds fun. How stable are they after you start switching out parts? Ive replaced laptop bits before, and the overall build quality seems to lessen every time. Its possible i just have no idea how to do it properly though

I ran into some problems with my t450

Opening tha flap, sometimes it doesnt go on. Eventually i discnnected ram, hold power 1 minute, reconnect ram, and it worked. I thought this was the perma fix.

last night I let it stay updating win8 botnet overnight with the ac connected. I tried to turn it on today, no response. Connected ac, after some presses it worked again. Does this have to do with wha thappened before?

if you want to just fuck around, get a x200 or x60/61. they are dirt cheap and still fast enough for mundane tasks. they are alse librebootable, if that helps.

I think the backlight is broken, as all the screens display nothing (I have two working ones and one cracked one), but if I shine on them with a flashlight I can see the boot screen faintly

Just received my first ThinkPad!
Actually I'm still on vacation so my brother picked it up for me and I have yet to touch it.
It's a T430! It's the base model: i5 3320m 4gb ram 320gb hdd.

What's the next step? I guess I'll buy an SSD asap (I was thinking of something like a Kingdian or Netac, or is it chink shit?) and maybe 4 more GB of ram.
What else? I'll start messing around with Linux distros and learn about that. Not sure about flashing the bios as I don't really know what I would gain from that and how hard it would be for a newfag like me.

Well you're in luck. I have both X60 and X200. The X200 is definitely superior to the X60 in terms of performance. It runs a lot cooler and faster. Don't get me wrong, the X60 can get the job done, it's just not as peppy. But the X200 can handle anything I throw at it, it can output 1080p streaming video to an external monitor through displayport. The X60 doesn't have that kind of power.

Well, the price difference between X60 and X200 on ebay is very small. The extra power is certainly worth it. If you really don't care, then get X60. But I don't recommend the tablet. They can be flaky with libreboot from what I hear. Not all X60 tablets are compatible.

No problem senpai. Also, after you get it flashed with libreboot you need to swap the wifi chip with an atheros one since it's usually a proprietary intel wifi chip. Get the AR9380. It is a god-tier wifi chip and produces very little heat. That makes a BIG difference on the X60 because the palmrest can get ridiculously hot with wifi usage. Also get a fresh keyboard/palmrest/battery for real cheap and it will feel like a new machine. And you're right about the SSD, they make a huge difference.

Well, the main reason people buy T420s is BECAUSE you can keep replacing parts and fixing shit.

They are built like a brick shithouse and could probably withstand being crushed by one, but they really cant handle straining tasks, like most budget laptops.

However if you are pretty much only writing papers and browsing, go for it.

Update: It took a lot of searching, as the majority of Thinkpad Lenovo 13's available are the chromebook model without a trackpad, but I'm able to buy the windows version with a trackpoint new (there are exactly 0 used non chromebook models out there as far as I can tell). with all the upgrades I want (i5, 1080p, backlit keyboard, fingerprint scanner) for just over $850. It also has 2 DDR4 ram slots, so I can get up to 32GB DDR4 at some point should I desire to do so. Is this at all worth it? Seems like a pretty solid little notebook that I wont have to replace for a long while, and I am having a hell of a time finding a smaller form factor laptop that isn't shit tier in terms of processing power and/or build quality. Shipping is also free, which is a huge plus for me since I live in Alaska

Fun fact, when IBM released the X41, they also released an X32, that didn't have an underclocked Pentium M CPU like the X41 did. They did this because a lot of clients complaned that the X40 was slow. The 1.8" PATA HDDs were notorious for slow read/write speed and reliability. I think it is somewhat comical that they had an 'old' laptop for sale again.

I'm not too familair with the 1.5GB RAM issue... it like had a soldiered RAM slot or something. I've yet to get one to deal with the issues.
I kinda want one because the T4x was so damn thin before IBM/Lenovo implemented the magnesium sub frame.

So, I have read that the x250 has a 2242 m.2 slot, but it looks too tiny for me. There are some 256gb ssd on AliExpress for 65€.

I've installed the ThinkVantage Fingerprint software and set up my fingerprint, but if I swipe when the power's off the green light on the reader doesn't blink. The reader works in Windows.
