Poor? Knock-off batteries are usually worse anyway.

You're retarded. Enjoy being unable to install a new wifi card in the future when new standards will come out.

As for battery drm, it affects the usability of the laptop in the future, when you won't be able to get genuine batteries that are usable.

I'm going to study compsci at uni, and need some advice. I currently have a pc(pic related) that is pretty capable. I'm going to keep it, but need a laptop. I was initially thinking of spending like 1000 for a dell inspiron, or dell xps. Then I thought maybe I can do gaming and heavy use on my desktop, and get a thinkpad for uni. Now I don't think I want something like a t420. I want something newer, yet with the same advantages that the t420 has over the modern overexpensive unreliable laptops. I like the modern look(the one after t430), and as I'm going to use it a lot, I don't think it's worth buying, for example, a t420 and have the cdrom and bulkiness as extra weight. Location is Netherlands, any recommendations?

Well ultrabay can fit other things as well, you can use it for an additional battery or to put another SSD or a hard disk in.

I don't know if I want a small screen, as I want to use it for media consumption as well. The 260 and 250 are >600 euros here, so I'm looking at the x240. Though maybe too small.

>>62079108
Don't buy x240, I regret every money.
Thing that I dislike most are :

>trackpad is really weird and annoying

It needs time to accustom but why would you need that if you are going to spend more money

>very thin it feels like you can bend over and damage motherboard every seconds

>it is very hard to open it and if you are not careful you can break case plastic

I spend hours and hours with frustation to open it properly so I could put SSD.
I was fucking scared every moment that being clumsy, will break something.
When I finally opened it, I need to hassle with cable and shit and honestly I am scared that I fucked up or something these days.

>shitty processors compared to x230 and x220 processors.Even i7 version of x240 is very shit

good thing :
Battery life and it looks modern.

I put this shit on auction and waiting somebody to buy this shit so I can buy comfy x230 or t430

I just realized I took apart an x61t and replaced the fan a few months ago with a pre-owned replacement part, but I never did apply thermal paste to the fan, where would I apply it and do I need to do that necessarily? It runs warm but not incredibly hot with the fan as is.

I got a T420 and I'm confused about the fan noise it's generating. I had another 420 in the past and the fans made barely any noise, this one sounds like they're constantly spinning at high speed. My temps are at 40 celsius or ~100f so should it really be this loud
>>
>>62080382
Did you take off the heatsink/heat pipes for the CPU? The copper shit connecting the mobo and the fan. If not, you don't need to apply thermal paste, as it goes between the CPU and the heatsink.

I got a thinkpad that came pre-installed with Windows 10. Going to get rid of it, but something I noticed is that whenever I press the mic muting button, it won't light up. It should have that orange light when it's turned off, just like the sound button. So is Windows 10 really that much of a spyware trap that it just won't let you turn the mic off at all? Or maybe the light is just broken
>>
>>62082663
The light is probably broken. Try it before boot or in the bios.

>>
>>62083047
Backlight bleed is not something that can brick a laptop, it's just light shining through the gap between the lcd and housing and making the corners lighter than the center.

How many batteries do you lads have? How many of those are genuine? I have two aftermarket chink ones and they perform pretty well so far.

Also what is the best thinkpad that has no trackpad? Currently have an x200T and I love it but I'd like something more powerful later on or possibly as a full on desktop replacement.

Well, it was 1080p vs 720p and 256GB SSD/12GB Ram vs 64 GB SSD/4GB RAM.

I thought I could install debian on this laptop, which I could, even wifi worked (with iwl-wifi from the non-free repo) but the whole experience still sucked fucking dick.

>dat tearing when moving windows
>dat tearing when watching a video
>dat shitty audio lag when watching jewtube
>dat touchpad randomly clicking when my palm rests on it despite tinkering with the synaptics config file for 2 hours (pro tipp: Not necessary on either macOS or Windows)
>dat flimsy fucking keyboard

I eventually resigned and reinstalled Windows 10 (without the lenovo crapware) and put Linsux in a virtual machine. I hate Apple as much as the next /g/oy but goddammit Linux has no drivers and Windows is just a pain in the ass.

>You are *not* a hacker for using a thinkpad

>>
>>62088614
I have an x200 tablet and just bought an x220 tablet a few minutes ago lol.

I bought the x200t with everything in it. An HDD will be good enough to check out the system but getting an SSD is pretty much essential if you want the most out of your system, that's obvious. The x200, on Ubuntu at least, is pretty responsive. It can watch youtube videos perfectly fine, though the screen is a limiting factor in terms of quality but I honestly don't notice. The screen is small enough that it doesn't really bother me.

Then pen was pretty much the reason I bought the tablet version. I will say the pen is pretty neat and useful but the technology is a little basic. It requires a certain amount of pressure that makes it feel like you're losing a certain amount of sensitivity. That being said, it's very program dependant and some will handle the sensitivity better. I think the pen works better under windows but I'm not 100% on that. I sometimes write simple notes with Xournal and I'm more than satisfied with the pen.

The portrait mode is so awesome. it becomes really nice when you want to position the screen for writing notes or viewing PDFs. Plus like you said, watching media is nice because you can swivel the screen to whatever position you want.

Probooks aren't equivalent to Thinkpads. Elitebooks are, and may or may not be cheaper depending on the model and your location. They have pros and cons compared to Thinkpads, generally having inferior screens and input devices but superior upgradeability in the same form factor. For instance, the 2570p has a socketed CPU that you can upgrade to a quad core as well as a swappable disc drive, while the X230 has an IPS screen and the better Thinkpad keyboard and trackpoint.

My X220 has a fucked up battery lock, can this be fixed or am I wasting my time opening it back up?
>>
how do i use the EPP code? it declines my cards
>>
>>62091230
You'll have to do a full breakdown to get to it...
Maybe jam some sort of tooth pick or metal inside there if you don't wanna?
Whatever you put in there, binding it to the latch would be tricky.

I don't think anyone would just sell that one piece, you'll most likely need to buy a whole bottom end if you need that.
>>
>>62091328
It's just going to be a Hackintosh anyway, I'll glue the battery on for the Real™ Apple™ Experience™ of non-removable batteries.

Just kidding, I'll tape it.

I wanna see a real nigger rigged thinkpad with duct tape and electrical tape holding it together
>>
ThinkPads got me over my fear of static shocking PC parts. I treat them like shit when I'm cleaning them and almost never ground myself, but they all still work great.
>>
>>62089299
There was still Intel ME in the T60. You can put libreboot on it, I guess.
>>
>>62088677
You can try to spread misinformation, but it's hard to argue with the libreboot hardware compatibility list.

I watched one of your older videos where you put on the carbon fiber sticker on the cover of the thinkpad, and I tried it and I think it turned out alright, but how do you get the corners to not flake and peel off?
>>
>>62091650
Sometimes I might wrap them at a 45 degree angle, so it would look off.
But at the edges they like to peel, so I would just cut the part that is peeling... at a 45 degree angle lol

I'm not at home so I don't have previously wrapped laptops. Maybe I make a vid of it?

the price is high tho if you need a think pad now it's a good deal for free shipping.

source: bought from that seller and the pc is in good condition w/ official 9-cell but just received today

Will the x220 tablet work properly with coreboot? I know the non-tablet x220 works just fine with it, but there's next to nothing about the tablet variant. Is there any chance libreboot will ever support it?

I'm having a ton of heat issues with my x220, despite changing the thermal paste and thermal pad. What else can I do?

I'm starting to regret buying parts and upgrading my x220 tablet myself. It cost almost as much and I could've broken it with my shitty luck

Got x230t with 8gb ram and 300GB HDD for $110. It was the i5 model though, i7s often cost like 25-35% more. If you wanted to pay for the small performance boost over the i5 you did okay I guess.
>>
I think the speakers on my X230 are dead.
>>
My x220 tablet has some dirt caked on the screen. Is rubbing alcohol a safe way to get it off? I don't want to mess it up permanently
>>
are most of the ac adapters for Thinkpads universal? I just got a x200 tablet and I already have an x61 tablet charger and t420 charger, and they seem like they are the same. The x200 tablet does not come with a charger, but I can double up and get one later if needed.

Kinda. I think I fucked up with cleaning the heatsink though. See >>62092207

But I still get that sweet keyboard that my x200T has. I'm so in love with that layout that I'm looking for the desktop keyboards to replace my current keyboard.

has anyone replaced their thinklights with brighter LEDs yet? i got my t510 in the mail today and the light seems kinda dim (at least dimmer than anticipated)

I just thought I'd ask a quick question in here. A few years ago I bought a used T420 with a discrete graphics card (Nvidia) and 16 gigs of ram on ebay for about 200 bux. It's been working great except for the battery which I don't really care for.

My question is, has anyone out there had any problems when disabling the onboard graphics card and optimus on the BIOS and running Linux?

I have Arch on my machine and was doing some OpenGL programming on it. Because of sine if the OpenGL stuff we were doing I needed to use proprietary Nvidia drivers with Nvidia's libgl (unfortunately, nouveau driver and bumblebee both use mesa's libgl). If I disabled the onboard card and optimus in the bios (as well as uninstalled/installed the relevant packages in my OS) then I had this problem where sometimes Arch would simply fail to boot. It would get partway there and then just stall on a black screen before even hitting the login screen (terminal, I wasn't even using a session manager to avoid complicating things). Other times it would just pause there for a moment and then continue booting like normal. I was never able to resolve it and for the entire time I was working on said project I basically dealt with a ton of hard reboots and fsck because I couldn't get it to boot correctly with any amount of consistency.

Since then I've gone back to bumblebee and have avoided graphics programming on my laptop. Recently I tried it again because I might do some Cuda stuff on it but again I ran into the same problem booting.

Any ideas or input would be highly appreciated. I honestly have no idea why it's doing that shit or how to fix it.

Any ideas? Would 250 be too much?

Should I buy lot of 6 t420's for $875 with no batteries?
>>
>>62092730
that's like 145 dollars per computer so if they still have the ram in them i would

Am I supposed to be adding a thermal paste instead of paste?

Anyone here own a t420?

Thoughts on it? Any complaints?

How does it fair under Linux?
>>
>>62092578
also, on the t510, i'm getting conflicting info regarding installing 16gb ram

is it really a chipset limitation? if it's a cpu limitation, would adding a i7-620M alleviate such an issue?

yes

i wish i wouldve gotten one instead desu

Im poor has fuck, where i can get a cheap laptop with at least 4Gb of ram, i ve seen the X420 X200 and X220 but they still very expensive to me, i need keep saving? they are more expensive than USA price lol
>>
>>62089976
X230 has battery DRM, and doesn't have coreboot/libreboot support. X220 is actually still not as good as X210 where you can actually disable Intel ME entirely.
>>
>>62092779
Fug, I meant thermal pad instead of paste.

how much of a meme would I be if I replaced my US keyboard with a Japanese keyboard on my thinkpad? I am actually learning Japanese...
>>
>>62092779
pls respond someone has to know for sure

>>62092870
i might do that itd be aesthetic
>>
>>62092870
I did that only because i got one cheap for $13 new but the Japanese layout is almost the same as my ISO-based native layout, except for five extra keys. Getting one when you're used to the ANSI layout might be very annoying in my opinion.

that's true. The only thing is that some of the keys are laid out differently. Plus there are keys that almost no other keyboard has. The space bar is way smaller as is the backspace. I don't use the right shift so that's no big deal. Still, I don't know if I could adapt to that.
>>
>>62092880
No you can't, only the W510 can.

really kickin myself for not getting a 420 instead but at least i can put a quad core i7 in it so not all is lost
