Having a touchpad, no matter how small is better than not having one. Something like the X201's. To call having a touchpad on a laptop 'appletard' is a bit fucking dumb.
>>

The T4X series is unlikely to be powerful enough for even light browsing. I'm a big proponent of the T410 because i owned one and the extra vertical real estate from the 16x10 display (normally 1440x900) is very nice. Only problem is that there aren't any 1920x1200 IPS displays on the market right now.
>>
>>62048485
I've always percieved Manjaro as extremely demanding. A fresh install on my X230 needs 1.5GB RAM in idle and keeps my CPU at 10% without any programs open.

Whoo boyos, I've been really drooling over T520s, but ended up getting a Dell E7440. Pretty sweet imo. Got 8 gigs ram, 128 gigs SSD and an i5 4310U. Any recommendations on upgrading? Also, it seems to have a fingerprint scanner, but I don't find it in the hardware list. Is there any reason for Dell to fake one? Or am I just a big dummy who can't even utilize a fingerprint scanner?
>>
>>62049332
16GB of RAM, and maybe an i7-4600U. Unfortunately, the Haswell-U CPU series has a different socket than standard Haswell, so you can't swap a HQ or equivalent in.

Also, the fingerprint scanner might be disabled in the BIOS.
>>
>>62049332

>>
Do you think a W520 with a 2000M GPU, i7-2760QM, and 16gb of ram is worth $400?

Only downsides are it has an HDD but it's at least 1tb at 7200 RPM. Also a 1600x900 screen.
>>
>>62043590
Could anyone help me out here? I'm trying to decide between buying two slightly different models of the same laptop. Both have an i7-7500U processor, but what sets them apart is that one of them has a dedicated GPU (950Mx so nothing special) which means an extra fan as well.

I'm wondering if you have any idea whether or not this would reduce battery lifetime (9 hours) to any effect, as well as how much louder the computer would be on relatively low loads (programming, browsing, MS word)

The guy at the shop, who i asked, claimed that the one with a GPU was quieter - but that sounds retarded..

I realize nobody here can give a totally accurate estimation but a rough one would be appreciated
>>
>>62049528
Oh shit, I meant GeForce 940MX, not 950MX
also, it's only 90 more dollars more, so relatively cheap for an upgrade. I'm just not really going to be gaming
>>
>>62049528
dgpu = more power needed = more heat = fan goes awoo more frequently

unless you completely disable it then it defeats the purpose of buying a laptop with dgpu
>>
I have a problem with my T420. At first it made that beep when you disconnect or reconnect the power cord constantly when the cord was plugged in. Then the power jack stopped working. I replaced the power jack, and it kind of works now, but I still need to have the cord rotated just right or it won't charge :( Any ideas?
>>
>>62049528
If the models have Thunderbolt 3, then you're better off getting an external GPU enclosure for home use, and then leaving it behind when taking your laptop on the go.
>>
>>62049565
Get a dock for it, use the charging port on the dock.
>>
>>62049558
Makes sense. I guess that employee just wanted me to purchase the more expensive one. Still leaning towards that one though, 90 more bucks for a decent dGPU is pretty good value, right?

Also, pic related (my current desktop)
Will this disable the GPU and then I can use fan controller software to enable/disable it? Or do I have to go into BIOS each time

Wondering if I could have it off most of the time, but then if I decide to play some vidya on my laptop - I could turn it (and its fan) on manually.
>>
>>62049636
>90 more bucks for a decent dGPU is pretty good value, right?
Depends, for me it would be a waste because i don't give a shit about video games and don't do professional GPU-related work, plus the iGPU can take care of basic media consumption so that'd be enough for me.

>Wondering if I could have it off most of the time, but then if I decide to play some vidya on my laptop - I could turn it (and its fan) on manually
Optimus is supposed to do that automatically but i'd still disable it completely via BIOS and then enable it manually if i needed the dgpu.
>>
>>62049733
I might need the GPU for some miscellanious stuff in my computer science course, but I could probably do without it.

Not worth it without the 1080p screen. You could get a W530 with a better CPU and GPU for that price. Paid $315 for pic related, though it only had 2GB of RAM and the 1600x900 screen when I got it.

Coming off a 2720qm/1000m W520, the performance difference is noticeable and it's really just a better experience all around. I had no end of trouble with Optimus on the W520, to the point where I just turned the autoselect off because it was always making the wrong decisions. So far it just works on the W530, I haven't had to add a single exception yet.

So I just sold my E6430 for a T420. Laptop looks thicc and solid. However I immediately noticed that during heavier CPU tasks it starts whining pretty loud and it gets on my nerves. Sounds pretty much like this:

Is this normal? E6430 used to be dead silent.

yes you need a specific one, look up X230's parts list and get the FRU number for the IPS screen then google that FRU number and you'll find ebay links or laptopscreen or amazon or google store or whatever

the hardest parat is popping off the plastic screen bezel, replacing the screen itself just involves a couple screws and a cable

then there's also the 1080p IPS mod but this will cost a bit extra and it disables the displayport on the dock

Aside from the size, everything else is the same or better.

Socketed CPU as well, three drives, same amount of max ram, option to use a 1080p display unlike the T420, etc.

>>62058294
tlp can do that if i remember correctly

Anything special I should know about the keyboard swap? Is it as simple as it sounds?
>>
>>62058334
Sound very close to perfection.

Also, does anyone have experience with buying CPU from AliExpress. It's pretty much the only way to buy a ThinkPad CPU were I live.
>>
>>62058260
I literally just received my first Thinkpad in the mail today, an X201 Tablet. I have the extended battery, and was wondering what size laptop sleeve I should buy to keep it safe while transporting, because I doubt a standard sleeve for a 21.1 inch laptop will fit it with the extra battery size. Should I go for a 14 inch sleeve and us the extra space to carry the charger?
>>
I just bought a 4gb i5 x250 thinkpad. I'm planning on switching to 16gb of ram and adding a 1 tb HDD. The all-in cost should be around $600. The main reason I went with the x250 over the x230 was appearance and battery life.

Did I do alright?
>>
>>62058402
12.1 inch, I suck cocks
>>
>>62058397
>aliexpress
I buy like everything from there, even thinkpad parts and they just werk but laptop processors usually are way cheaper on eBay.

You can always dispute if it doesn't work anyway.
>>
>>62043671
Fucking intel kikes.
>>
What preventative measures do you lads have in place to prevent your thinkpad from being stolen by tyrone or some white crackhead? What are your plans if it gets stolen?
>>
>>62058505
BIOS supervisor password + full drive encryption, my phone and flash drive are encrypted as well.

I doubt someone would want to steal an old thinkpad though.
>>
>>62058505
Hit him with the ThinkPad, if done right he'll get knocked out or die.

>>62058595

Yeah that's what i plan on doing... and get a cheap battery for like $10

I doodle in Krita sometimes, but only when I am not at my desk with a better tablet, since it only has 512 levels of pressure and no tilt detection. It is still very useful, but I want more screen real estate which is why I'm hunting for an X60t or X61t. But I flip it over and put it in tablet mode to watch vids and movies and stuff, and I play Heroes of Might and Magic 3 a lot plus and some other games in Wine where the stylus is great to use.

And yeah, I had to work to get things working right. I settled on regular Arch because the drivers just werked. I tried some other distros but for some reason when I installed the wacom input drivers, starting X would just freeze everything.

>>62058416
The tablet with the extended battery IS rather large. I compared it to my T61. It is almost exactly as deep, and almost exactly as thick, and maybe an inch less wide. With the standard battery it is probably an inch less deep. So go for the 14" or 15" sleeve. It feels small, but it's still a 5-pound slab.
>>
>>62058725

Yeah pi's are nice but all the accessories you have to buy can add up to be quite pricey.
>>
>>62056239

yes get it and send it to me for Christmas. TIA.

Does everyone think that this t520 is a good deal?
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Lenovo-ThinkPad-T520-Intel-Core-i7-2620-2-7GHz-8GB-RAM-500GB-15-6-/372040156824?hash=item569f524698:g:lzgAAOSwYaxZi4Xj#shpCntId

I wasn't sure if it is worth it.

Actually just found this one too:

depends if you want to spend another $20 for an i7
>>
>>62059048
The one with the i5 is actually more expensive, but it also comes with windows 7. I've never used linux before so I'm a bit apprehensive. I was thinking about running debian because I've heard it's supposedly very stable.
>>
>>62058999
pretty standard price for them, the screen resolution is pretty cruddy but manageable, I would personally budget another $50-100 for a better screen or just bump your price point up to $250.
>>
>>62059150
How do you tell the resolutions? It doesn't list it anywhere on the page.
>>
>>62059135

linux is easy to install. Once you get the hang of it... easy to use too.
>>
>>62059225
Okay thanks. I was actually look at these cheap laptops specifically so I could have something to experiment with linux on.

I don't really draw that much but I do have a dedicated tablet for drawing. The main thing I find it useful for is making markups on PDF's or on pictures. The rotating screen is amazing and I don't think I could do without it now. Have you used Xournal before? I was never much for writing notes on a computer with a stylus but this program is actually making me want to do it.

I used Ubuntu MATE and everything pretty much worked except the automatic screen rotation. Even the button to flip the screen worked but the stylus wouldn't recognize that it had been flipped so the pen would be on the opposite side of the screen. I found a script online and used that. I put a little shortcut button on my taskbar and can flip it even with the screen rotated.

I going with an HDD because I need something I can completely wipe with DBAN at regular intervals. You can never completely wipe an SSD. They have to be destroyed.

if you genuinely believe that then you can just use full-disk encryption and then just throw away the key and then format and rewrite it like normal... Even if it's not completely wiped all the data that is leftover is useless.

X200 Tablet with 4GB of RAM and an [email protected] for $180? Keep in mind I live in Europe and shipping is pricy.

My new Tecra z40 arrived in the mail today. It feels very sturdy and looks great. I'm surprised Toshiba laptops don't have a larger fanbase here considering the amount of weaboo faggots.
