Ugh. People are accustomed to seeing the picture of the red nub, because it is a distinctive feature of the ThinkPad not a meme that is the worthless opinion of some shill.

People are going to be confused, because when they look for what they are accustomed to seeing, it would be as though this weren't the real TPG.

I'm just saying.

Found an x230 with i5-3230M, 8GB RAM, 120GB SSD with an IPS display for 389e. Any good? A bit expensive but such is life with weird nordic keyboards and taxes. A bit worried about the warranty only being 6 months.

So /tpg/ I opened up my T420s to fix my airplane switch, reseated the ribbon cables and whatnot. On that end of things, everything seems to have worked. However upon booting my touchpad/trackpoint are no longer functioning. The keyboard works fine. So, what do?

I'm okay with paying a bit extra for the store stuff. Less of a hassle and no warranty at all with individual sellers. I might get the x230 then. Hope the resolution won't be an issue.

probably broken connectors. it's kinda weird because keyboard&trackpoint are on one ribbon, and touchpad is on another ribbon. what OS do you have? you should reinstall those devices. also check bios settings.
>>
>>62027705
I'm running manjaro. I did check the bios already and both are enabled.

if you really need usb3.0 (3x the irl speed vs usb2.0) aka you transfer a lot of shit from removable hard drives back and forth and you need to play games, then go for a x230. but you're better off with a T430 or a T530 for gaymen aka don't get hot as fuck.
>>
>>62027980
if it's one 4gb stick so you can buy one later then it's fine, otherwise it's a ripoff.
>>
>>62027853
Broken connector or broken ribbons, I dont see how you can test them by yourself, you can always go to a repair shop and ask them nicely to test them for you, or you can get another used keyboard and palm rest and see if they work on your machine. Until then you should get a usb keyboard and mouse.
>>
Is it worth updating my X220 from Sierra to High Sierra at this point?
>>
>>62028163
how's the hardware support on OSX?
bluetooth, thinklight, AC network card, touchpad, trackpoint, all usb ports, displayport, vga, battery thresholds ? any issues?
>>
>>62028360
Not him but all of those except for the sd card reader just work on my gayOS T420, even the expresscard.

Oh and you need to change the wlan card, the stock intel won't work.
>>
>>62028360
You need to buy some $10 wlan card and the touchpad is janky. I didn't try VGA but displayport and dvi (through the dock) work fine. The rest, no issues. Battery bretty good I might say, but of course there's no neat fancy software to adjust thresholds (that I know of). Since my X220 doesn't have USB 3.0 I couldn't tell you how good that works, but 2.0 does nicely. Thinklight and bluetooth just werk.
>>
>>62028409
>there's no neat fancy software to adjust thresholds

how's the install process? I'm willing to try it at some point but it seems way too tedious, after all these years isn't there like a way to set up a thumbdrive with the OSX installer and install it like a Linux distribution?

>>
>>62028654

>>
>>62028522
Well that definitely is the tedious part.

You need macOS, so you would have to use a virtual machine if you don't have one of those machines around. I happen to use hackintosh on my PC too so not much of a big deal.

Then it's a process that involves downloading the OS through the app store, using a command to make a bootable usb, install the bootloader (Clover) on it as well and put some downloaded files on the EFI partition in that USB. After that, not much.

Also you would have to use a custom BIOS but that's linked on this guide:

http://x220.mcdonnelltech.com/

I still find it worth the effort.

Has anyone managed to use the discrete graphics card on a T470p on any linux distro? I've been trying on Fedora: Proprietary repos: black screen, Repo drivers: black screen, Bumblebee: seg faults all over, black screen after uninstall. negativo17 repo black screen after install. Seems like its nouveau and screen tearing just playing videos, or off to an OS that works.

>>
>>62031538
Yeah. I was hoping to avoid the botnet, but I suppose I'll have to move back.
>>
>>62031557
You're using a proprietary BIOS, and graphics that require propreitary blobs to function. Either way, you're still using the botnet. Of course Linux won't work well on shitty hardware like that.
>>
>>62031356
>>62031557
Have you tried a different distro of Linux such as Ubuntu? by proprietary repos do you mean the closed sourced Nvidia Drivers?
>>
>>62031631
There's miles difference between windows 10 and nvidia proprietary drivers. Why is the hardware shitty?
>>
>>62031662
I have not tried other distros, was hoping to get a pointer to a known working distro before spending that much time. Yeah by proprietary I mean the drivers downloaded from Nvidia's site.

All of the things I tried claim to support Optimus (which is what the T470p is using) but none of them actually seem to work on the T470p. If someone knows of any working variant, that's all I'm looking for. Otherwise I'll just move back to Windows 10.
>>
Are T440s's good?

I've seen a lot of people write off any models past the ivybridge gen. I know you can replace the touch button trackpoint buttons with a T450s's.

Is there anything I should know about with the T440s? I've had an X220 for a while and I love it, but the 720p screen while nice looking makes coding less than optimal as a daily driver.

I'm also considering the touch model if it's not a joke but that's really an afterthought.

I've also heard they got rid of that comfy matte soft touch shit on the shell that I like. Is that true?
>>
>>62031665
Because it requires proprietary software to function. You have no idea what software is running on your system, and with the recent blatant inclusions of telemetry services on the Windows driver suite, is pretty clear your data is being harvested. Enjoy your botnet.

I get the feeling by "supported" they mean that the OS runs on the laptop, but perhaps not that the discrete graphics card works. (I'm using it now after all, just on integrated graphics)

I'm using Fedora 26. Since Fedora is basically the free/desktop version of RHEL I figured it would be my best bet. Ubuntu would be the other way to go, I'm surely not paying up for RHEL.

I could just be screwing it up, but I can't find any confirmed cases of someone getting the discrete card to work on linux. I'm just debating how much energy to invest in this.

Get a caddy, remove optical drive and stick a hard drive or SSD in a caddy into it. Also it will take up to 4910MQ don't quote me on it but I don't think the MX quadcores work like the i7-4930MX and i7-4940MX. Max ram is 16GB. Swap out the trackpad for a T450/550 trackpad. Sadly the M.2 slot is 2248 size which is the smallest size and basically nobody stocks them and their largest size is 128gb or 256GB but goodluck finding someone who sells them as ADATA and other vendors stopped manufacturing them.

As far as i know it's supposed to only take genuine batteries from Lenovo but i see some third-party batteries with good reviews as well which means that they also work with the devices. >It's used to hell and back, it came that way from the seller. The thing lasts like 10 min before dying.
You can try to bring it back, if you charge it for a few days, drain it to maybe half, and keep repeating that over and over like 10-20x and then drain it all the way it will probably show shit life but get "stuck" at like 5% for a long time.

Then charge it before it dies, keep doing that.

Also if you freeze it and whack it with your palm when it's frozen, then carefully thaw it (put it in a ziplok before you do it) it might bring it back even more.

There's also the possibility of getting a breaking charge to occur.

>I'm desperate enough to pay like $200 for a genuine 9cell but no one ships batteries overseas so fug me.

generic chinese batteries are fine though too, i have several, they all have genuine sanyo or sony cells

I travel a lot. My back is somewhat fucked. I need at least 256gb boot and 1-2TB secondary. Can I fit a secondary drive into any X1s?

Failing this, are there any T series, 14 inch and up, that would have a max weight of approx 2.2. kilo even with a secondary drive. (A standard 2.5 HD weighs about 120gram).

Thx anon.
>>
>>62042052
Will do that since i have nothing else to do.

>generic chinese batteries are fine though too
I know, that isn't an issue for me. The thing is that stupid Lenovo "DRM" battery thing on modern thinkpads that prevents you from using use fake ones.
>>
>>62042025
>It is the non nvidia model
In my opinion that's the better version anyway.

>with a 768p screen
Easily replaceable with a beautiful B140HAN01.3.

Opinions on the T450s? I'm aware of the soldered RAM/12GB limit, but I doubt I'll need more since I'll only be using it for uni programming projects and MAYBE music production. How does the build quality compare to other models such as the T440?

Usually I do a battery reset when I get a new ThinkPad, but on this one Lenovo Power Manager is reporting a maximum capacity that matches the label on the battery, should I even bother?
>>
>>62042239
If that's all you need it for just get a T420.

I hate that
I have to use windows for certain programs and it took away my middle click + scrolling
it worked fine in Kubuntu but I need to use autodesk stuff

I am usually all about $300 refurbs, but I guess I can stretch up to $700 + something for the secondary drive.
>>
>>62042295
I would, but I'd rather go with something a bit more lightweight/slimmer. Still, if I find a T420 with good specs for really cheap I might consider it
>>
>>62041308
X220 with a 9 cell battery and a battery slice. Will literally give you 18-20 continuous hours.
>>
>>62042418
x230 then
>>
>>62042417
well almost everything relevant can take 2 drives because of mSATA and M.2

X220, X230, X240, X250, depending on what you can find and what other kind of specs you want

My T60 doesn't have that problem...

I need a thinkpad and fast. I'm contemplating the $240 refurbished t430 on amazon just because how fast I will get it. Is there a better solution?

I don't care about the shitty keyboard, going to use my tada68 anyway.

If you don't care about upgrading the processor then take that 430s, sounds good.
>>
>>62042467
>well almost everything relevant
But no X1s, right?
>X220, X230, X240, X250
Should have said, I need 14 inch screen minimum, preferably 1600x900. I work a lot, so small screens or shit resolution just isn't fun in the long run.
>>
>>62042650
I think all generations of X1's can take either an mSATA or M.2 drive and a 2.5" drive
>>
>>62042650
what about the t420s or t430s, you won't be able to upgrade the cpu but they come with the 1600x900 res already

Is there any hope for Raven Ridge thinkpads?

>>

Ah cool. then I might get that one.

>>62042699
Actually I have a T430s already. I thought it was around 2.5 KG 'cause I felt no major difference to my old T520. But now that I checked the specs I see that it is way lighter than 2.5. So now I have to find out why my back is still hurting...
Thx anons.

literally anything? 32gb USB 3.0 flash drives are <$20

you might have an easier time with a linux liveUSB + TLP though

Apparently it needs to be able to be read as a fixed drive or Windows won't boot right.

If you want a free system, yes.

You could also install coreboot on your t420 if you wanted to, and you could remove most of the nonfree BIOS code, using ME_Cleaner.
