A non meme answer is the drive needs to be degaussed to truly guarantee all the data is gone. A poor man's method would be to open the drive, remove the controller, then bake the platters at 400 degrees F for half an hour. Once the magnetic material hits the curie point, the field orientation will randomize thoroughly. Destroy the controller via microwave for 10 seconds. You could also just toss the whole drive into a nice strong bed of coals and leave it. Don't breathe the smoke.

Its highly unlikely that a malicious agent or third party actor would able to tamper with the drive midwipe. The firmware issue on the other hand is more of a backdoor thing, and I have yet to see any evidence that intels ME or amd's PSP can save file headers/footers.
