I don't think that makes a difference, anime is usually done at i think 900p and downscaled to 720p for tv viewing, so 1080p versions tend to have bad upscaling. You might as well use the 720p version and upscale it yourself. for BDs i think they are upscaled to 1080p from the 900p original so 720p versions will be a downscaled 1080p.

The most reliable source of info regarding anime's original resolution is http://anibin.blogspot.com where it is evaluated through some quite elaborate image processing tricks. Accordint to it even the most recent TV anime only occasionaly hits 900p. The overwhelming majority is still approximately half 720p and half ~810p. Movies of course are usually made in better quality, but not all of them.

It's also worth mentioning that the whole procedure of downscaling BD to original resolution and then using madVR to upscale again makes sense quality wise because studios during the BD mastering process usually don't care to use something more sophisticated than a mere bilinear/bicubic, which are really basic upscale algos that surpass only the nearest neighbour algo (which is pure shit). As these are quite simple algos, it's possible to reverse them almost losslessly.

The purists among encoders often accompany this by utilizing 4:4:4 colour subsampling. It's worth doing this because the original is drawn in RGB of course, but to encode a BD the video is converted so that it has a luma (luminosity) part at the full resolution and a chroma (chromaticity) part at only a half of the final resolution (4:2:0 subsampling), as required by the BD video standarts. So not to introduce more chroma loss during a final 720p encoding, the luma part of the BD is downscaled with the reversing algo, and the chroma part, in contrary, is upscaled to the full final target resolution. As a result we get an almost original RGB picture with the minimal possible losses which are inevitable without the access to the original master video.

Still... every conversion, (without exception) will make a downgrade in quality of the video (as in: taking it away from the original masters) and every downscale/upscale will distort, since you're not working from the masters to begin with, so some prefer to leave at the BD -standard- resolution it was released in. It's all nice in theory, but in reality dht sometimes can't collect all available seeds. I witnessed it several times while downloading some relatively old raws releases with hyperlinks to some Chinese forums. You get 1-2 seeders from nyaa trackers and/or dht, you wait for half an hour, and nothing changes. Then you follow that hyperlink, download a magnet with a bunch of Chinese trackers - and immediately get 2-4 additional seeders. I don't know whether it's due to some innate dht limitations or it's just faggots with disabled dht, but it's a fact - one can disable dht but can't disable a tracker. Though at pantsu we've got a new type of faggots - ones that indeed periodically disable their own tracker.

About the ads, its not ewhal's fault its mine. We didn't expect to have to pay so much for servers, we don't just have 1 server now we have multiple ones including reverse proxy's, backup servers and a hidden service to backup the DB. I completely understand the fact that ads are rather annoying, i removed the top ad from the torrents view page as that was a mistake. Initially we had an offer from exoclicks but unfortunately they required us to use popups, and while ads are quite annoying, popups are definitely even more. So after searching a bit a-ads seemed like a rather appropriate ad network since they pay with bitcoin and also do not track users. If you really don't want to help out you can just turn on adblocker and you won't even notice a single thing. The amount earned from the ad's will be posted in the transparency report every month.

Thanks i really appreciate that, but they aren't wrong, i probably should have talked about adding ads and in terms of trust the damage has been done. Our current hardware isn't exactly great, id rather not reveal the hardware were currently using but to put it simply, its not good. The hardware i bought is still just gathering dust until some issues with the datacenter are fixed, ill write about all the issues once its been fixed. After that the costs will go down a lot (except occasional maintenance costs).

Not really, akuma is pretty great at communication but ewhal doesn't seem to care much and often do things while completely ignoring things that have been said beforehand, e.g me 18h ago telling him that the refine form is still missing things (options for quality tag and filling the tag inputs based on what has been searched so showing "454545" in the anidb input if you just searched it) and yet he updated live a few hours after that
And akuma's been asking for the boards link to get moved away from the header from a while but both Miao and ewhal are completely ignoring that too
So yeah, the communication within the team is pretty awful, but only two persons are responsible for that and it's Miao and ewhal4
