It's going to be my first and only laptop so I'm pretty flexible with the budget, I'd say max 600 euros, that's a lot for Thinkpads right? If it's less than that I'm going to add an SSD, if it's not included.

Starting programming at Uni, but the problem is I'm from Finland and all the cheap thinkpads I find have US keyboards. Are there any cheap Nordic ones or am I screwed? Need 8GB RAM and decent enough battery life to survive full days at uni.
>>
>>62014716
there are plenty of cheap refurbs from Sweden where I live, you should find one easily, don't you nordniggers have like a craigslist or something?

Finnish Craigslist is dead, random Finnish sites don't seem to have much. All newer ones and much more expensive.

what's your budget? have you checked murobbs?
>>
>>62015206
That one looks a bit expensive once you add RAM and SSD, but will look around on that site.

>>62015246

500-600e at most. Been checking a bunch of Finnish sites but forgot about muro, will check. Some site had a bunch of otherwise decent ones but they all had a 3 hour battery life. I ended up looking at UK ones also since the keyboards are similar enough that I could just swap the language in OS settings and try to memorize the special stuff.
>>
>>62013681
Why would you need an extra 3.3V power supply when you already have a Pi? A small flash chip draws fuck all, the Pi's 3.3V regulator should be able to handle it.

In that case you could afford something from vstore.fi and get a one year warranty as well. Of course they're pretty expensive to be second hand but there's much less to worry about.

How much better is the T400s compared to T400? Price difference is pretty big.
>>
>>62015958
I needed a decent linux laptop with something better than a 720p screen for my bachelor's thesis (some code monkey Java EE shit). CPU power was secondary, I have a 13" MBP (non retina) with a 2.9GHz Core i7 with plenty of cpu power but a shitty, useless 720p screen.

What weirds me out a bit is the fact that I sold my 2012 11" MacBook Air (Core i5 1.7 GHz, 4GB memory, 64 GB of SSD storage and a 720p display) for 500 fucking mountain shekels whilst only paying 360 for that thinkpad...really makes you think.

Hey CIA niggers, I need to get a laptop for my studies. Would you recommend a Thinkpad Ultrabook T440? There's a company selling used business laptops and they got it on sale for 520€. 8GB of DDR3 RAM and a 128GB SSD (probably swapping it for a bigger HDD).

requirements:
>6hr+ battery life
>temps under 50C-55C
>weight ~2kg
>emulate ps1/2, play classic pc games
>stream content (720p)

unimportant:
>build and durability
>*nix support (it will run bsd/win10)
>keyboard, track-pad, track-point
>screen
>ports and connections
>upgradeability (i will disassemble it once completely, clean it, upgrade it and leave it alone for a decade)

if you have something to recommend please state what you own and how long you have used it for. the laptop i will purchase will replace a 10 year old Toshiba (15.4", Core2 Duo, GM965 chipset) which is not worth upgrading due to weight and insufficient return on performance.
>>
>>62017009
then get a bigger ssd or external hard drive or something, or just get a thinkpad that can hold two 2.5" drives (t440 is not one of them)

but downgrading from an ssd to an hdd is the worst thing you could do and you will immediately realize your mistake after you reinstall whatever OS you would have put on the HDD
>>
>>62017080
I've never had an SSD in my life anon. While I agree that SSD is faster, I dunno if it would bother me to have an HDD. Prioritizing disk space over speed.

How much would you pay for a t430 with Nvidia dGPU (NVS 5400M>? I found one (model 2349-G4G) with 4gb ram, 320gb hdd, i5 3320M, the standardintel HD 4000 iGPU and a somewhat bad battery that lasts 2 hours for €260.

The main reason is of course, having a FOSS bootloader on your machine, free of potential software backdoors. And then there's of course faster boot times. Otherwise, if you don7t care about your privacy and personal freedoms, don't bother.

Most RAM modules should work fine as long as they match. I'm using RAM manufactured in 2016 on a laptop manufactured in 2008, and it works fine.

>>62020243

Yes, the pi provided enough power for flashing the chip on my x220. I only needed the small amount of power that the USB to serial adapter connected to my x200 provided.

I compiled coreboot for my x220 with seabios, and I used ME_Cleaner to bring the management engine down from 1.4MB to 90KB, which should remove all of the functionality from Intel's backdoor. Coreboot is much faster than the stock BIOS too. Less than 20 seconds after pressing the power button, I'm at the desktop.
>>
>>62020448
If you're going to get an i-series Thinkpad, XX20 Thinkpads are where it's at performance-wise. T410 doesn't have a lot going for it besides being a T400 with a slightly better processor.

Yeah, ME_Cleaner just leaves the parts that the CPU looks for. The CPU is designed to shut itself off after 30 minutes if it does not find the Management Engine.

I installed an IPS screen, an msata SSD, and a brand new keyboard from a t510 I had lying around. I am thinking about soldering pepe to my motherboard to upgrade to 1080p, but 1366x768 isn't that bad.

https://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=122640

I installed Windows 7 on a partition, just for testing things, and the Management Engine shows up as a broken device in device manager, which is interesting.

>>62020676

She's at work at the moment, I'll ask later.

Any extra hardware you plug into your Thinkpad while using Coreboot/Libreboot won't stop it from working. However, hardware requiring non-free software is frowned upon (At least by the Libreboot project).
>>
>>62020797
This is the one I had:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/111822206257
It looks like it has bad reviews, because it does not provide enough power for some hard drives. I never had that issue, the ports are pretty cheaply made, but they work. If I were getting one now I would probably get one with external power, because then you could plug that power in if you needed to use a device that required more current.

And Libreboot does not affect the devices that you can use, expresscard is basically a PCIe lane. Libreboot does remove the wifi whitelists and other arbitrary restrictions though.

W520 is my personal workstation beast. It can cool everything, it has NVIDIA Optimus Graphics with 1GB or 2GB VRAM, it can hold a FHD IPS screen, it can hold up to 32GB of RAM on the Quad-Core models, it has USB 3.0, the CPU can even be upgraded to Ivy Bridge if you wanted to (but you'd need a custom bios). You could get it for $400, get a screen for $50, a new genuine battery for $70 and a bunch of RAM or a better CPU. Used SODIMM DDR3 1600mhz RAM (only works on custom bios too iirc, there is no reason to use the original Lenovo ome) is really cheap.

With coreboot you can remove the Intel ME, and you can remove the battery, PSU, and wifi whitelists. You also get better boot times. If you want to you can just have a GrUB payload, so the system will go straight to GrUB, which is even faster. I compiled it with seabios so that I can still boot to MBR devices like my flashdrive easily.

I think that you will need to flash the modified lenovo BIOS that gets the x220 keyboard working first, and then install coreboot.

From the libreboot website:
https://libreboot.org/docs/hardware/#thinkpad-t60-ati-gpu-and-thinkpad-t60-intel-gpu-differences.
"Theoretically, the ThinkPad T60 with ATI GPU can work with libreboot and have ROM images compiled for it, however in practise it would not be usable as a laptop because there would be no visual display at all. That being said, such a configuration is acceptable for use in a ‘headless’ server setup (with serial and/or ssh console as the display)."

I have an intel wireless AC card that I had from something else installed, and it works very well. I don't think that there are any AC cards yet that you can use with no nonfree drivers.

>>62022132
Yes, that is similar to mine. It works just as well as the pomona clip. I think the pins are a bit closer together on that though, so it is a bit trickier getting the wires attached. I used a clip like that for flashing one of my other thinkpads, and I ended up just soldering the ends of the wires onto the clip.

It worked, but after that I got one with the wires attached to it already off of ebay for ~$2-3, since it was so cheap.

Hi, I was thinking of replacing my old shit piece of a laptop with a used Thinkpad.

My old laptop is a Sony Vaio VPCEB4M1E and I'd like to buy the Lenovo ThinkPad T520.

The Vaio has the following specs:

>- Core i3 380M, 2.53 GHz
>- 4 GB DDR3 SDRAM - 1066 MHz - PC3-8500
>- 500 GB - Serial ATA-150 - 5400 rpm
>- 15.5" TFT 1366 x 768 ( WXGA )
>- ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5470 w/ 512 MB

The TP T520 (source - some from ebay/some from vendor):

>- Core i5 2520M, 2.4 GHz
>- 4 GB DDR3 SDRAM
>- 500 GB HDD
>- 15.6" Display - 1366 x 768 pixels
>- Intel HD Graphics 3000

Any piece of advice is very much appreciated.

not that guy but shipping to Chile is so damn expensive. I know, I used to live there.
>>
>>62023026
external monitor is of course better, but dont totally write off the internal screen. some stuff will still run fine, especially at the lower 768p res. when away from the desk with monitor, i often run overwatch and new vegas at a solid 60 fps and prey at a playable 30

I wanna get a t440p. Anything essential to upgrade and any price range i should look for?
>>
>>62023161
Yeah, it was around $110 in USPS fees + import fees for my t420 like two years ago.

Now I'm trying to get an original battery for my t440p and it's literally impossible, also no one ships batteries overseas. This is hell.

>>62023269
FHD IPS screen comes to mind. Replace the touchpad too if you're a trackpoint fan.

My X230 w/ backlit keyboard was pristine when I got it in January '17. I wipe it every once in a while with a disinfecting wipe, and it hasn't gotten shiny yet, even the spacebar is still perfect. However the middle click and left click of the trackpoint are wearing down and shiny, they definitely see a fair bit of use.

Any recommendations between the t470 and t570? I think the offset keyboard on the t570 will be a minor annoyance that will become major over time. I wouldn't mind the larger screen though. Otherwise they seem very similar. Also do I need to run anything special to dual boot linux on those?
>>
>>62023837
Thank you so much! I had searched a lot and never found this!
>>
>>62018703
I have a 2760p.
Definetly get the 2760p unless you want to deal with those retarded 1.8 inch HDDs.

Win10 is a bit retarded on it regarding automatic screen rotation. Linux is top notch.

you seem to know a little on the subject; how possible do you think it is to convert a ultrabay plus device (such as the numpad) to the serial ultrabay enhanced device
I want a numberpad like that for my laptop but its a t420. I'm thinking I could just take it apart and with some tinkering put it into the case of a serial ultrabay enhanced device such as the one that a t420 would use?
Do you have any idea on what it would take to do something like this
>>
>>62017041
agreed. smol and v cute but can sometimes be hard to do srs work on. i like to make my desktop comfy and i can't fit enough shit on my screen

Does anyone know what the approximate average life on Lenovo batteries tends to be? I have a 6-cell on my X201, and recently it's been suddenly dropping down to "critical" <10% charge from around 40-50% The battery is only around 3 months old now, so I was wondering if it could be in some way defective, since that kind of wear in just 3 months seems a bit excessive.
>>
>>62024039
run a battery reset/recalibrate it, then see if you're eligible to return it under warranty if it had a warranty
>>
>>62017068

>>
>>62024000
>>62024023

You might be out of luck, unless you can hack something together. I'm not too familiar with these machines, but there is probably an internal USB port you could cannibalize. Then maybe fit a usb numpad into an empty ultrabay device and connect it to the internal USB. I don't know of any legit devices though.

/Tpg/, looking for some advice. I need a Facebook/microsoft office machine for my wife. No games or hd videos, but needs a nice keyboard, touchpad, bright screen, good battery life, and runs fast. I have an SSD and extra RAM to put in it. Any thoughts?

>>

>>
>>62025129
yes, it depends on your budget and what size you want
>>
>>62025132
Sorry, I should have used the template from the pastebin. I'd prefer sub $300, but up to $500 is okay. I'm looking for factory refurbished or new and size doesn't really matter as long as it's 15" or below.
>>
>>62025150
if it absolutely must be 'factory refurbished' (fancy word for used and fresh OS install) or new then look at lenovo's outlet
http://www3.lenovo.com/us/en/outletus/laptops/c/LAPTOPS?q=%3Aprice-asc%3AfacetSys-Brand%3AThink&page=0

the T460s looks like a decent deal, might want to upgrade RAM and get the bigger extended battery for it though
>>
>>62025243
Thanks for looking, I appreciate it. I really just want it from a place where I can return it if I need to. I bought a used laptop last time around and the battery charger is all screwed up. That's why I'm in the market for a new one.

>>62025352
I looked at the specs and felt retarded for posting the question after. Previous generation i5, no SSD, 4GB RAM. I have the SSD and RAM, and I don't think the processor is going to be a big deal (it's still a 5200U at 2.7Ghz). Just bought it. Thanks for your help tonight, I really do appreciate it. I probably would have gotten the t460, but it was sold out at the outlet and like $800-$1100 anywhere else.
I have a Lenovo laptop myself, but it's a y510p, not a Thinkpad. I'm looking forward to seeing what all the hype is about. The touchpad on the y510p is god awful, btw.

the t470p seems godlike ngl, hella expensive though, especially if i wanted to get it with the nvidia card

i just hate having those shitty integrated chips
>>
>>62025588
My other laptop is a y510p, 2x 750m cards in SLI and I bought it new in 2013 for under $1k. Shitty touchpad but I can still get 50-60 fps in GTAV at 1080p and Witcher 3 will chug along at 35ish fps at 1080p.

>>
>>62025685
sorry man, thinkpads aren't really a gaming laptop
You would much rather buy something that is a gaming laptop. the reason we fag over thinkpads so much is because we think they have better keyboards and are easily serviceable. They are not known for their performance.
>>
>>62025693
Honestly, it looks pretty low-key. I've been very satisfied with it. It certainly doesn't have that alienware vibe about it.
>>
>>62025720
If you want to game, build a desktop. I'm of the opinion that laptops are for businessy stuff and it's nice if you can play games while you are travelling. Personally, I don't even take my laptop with me anymore on trips, I just plug a controller in to my phone and play old emulator and final fantasy games for entertainment.
>>
>>62025720
>>62025752
sorry /g/ents I've been using thinkpads since 2003 and I won't go back. I didn't ask about desktops or other brands, I asked a very straight forward question (hope im not sounding like a dick). For example, I know the P3000 gpu or M4000M gpu can easily play overwatch, any other gpus ? I seldom play games but I still want to be able to play something (even at lower than optimal settings) after working all day
>>
>>62025773
No worries, you don't sound like a dick. A game like overwatch is probably fine as long as you have a dedicated video card in a laptop.
This link might help you

>>
>>62025773
Also, I realize you are looking for a thinkpad, but the link I gave you can give you an idea about which video cards you should look for.
>>
>>62025858
my NVS3100m sucks at playing overwatch (using a T510 with 6gb and an i& M620 at 2.67ghz ), so I think I need like a K2100M and up?
>>
What quad-core CPUs can a T420 take?
>>
>>62025773
I know how you feel. My t510 with Nvs graphics does okay for light gaming but I don't think it could handle over watch.
If you really want to do something then you could try out the eGPU meme. I'll do it someday, that's the only reason I bought a laptop with the graphics card after all. (so I don't have to use a second screen as a primary [gross])
>>
>>62025925

It's been over three years, well past how long my IdeaPad lasted. Way more than I expected. But that's to be expected...of a ThinkPad.

(But then it gets sad because now I have hardware errors and such which probably are related to the fact I overuse Turbo Boost.)
