If you want help:
>Assemble parts list

>List games/software you use often, as well as your monitor resolution + refresh rate
>Clarify your goal for build improvements: lower price or improved specs?
How to assemble a PC, select components & more (outdated)
https://wiki.installgentoo.com/index.php?title=Build_a_PC

CPUs:
No i5 unless discounted
>G4560 - poverty-tier builds
>R3 1200 - Budget builds (<$500)
>R3 1300x - Good stop-gap between the 1500x and the 1200, only get a 1400 if you absolutely need multithreading
>R5 1500x - Good but up to 1600 if you can
>R5 1600 - Best value for higher fps gaming / mixed usage; 1600x if you want higher stock clocks
>R7/Used Xeon/Threadripper - Compute/Multitask/VM/mixed use; Not for just gaming

GPUs:
Coin miners have driven price up and stock down, waiting to buy a GPU might be wiser
>Integrated CPU Graphics - Desktop stuff and very light games
>GTX 1050(Ti) - Lower end budget cards, drop settings on newer games, RX560 beaten by both
>RX570 - 1080p@60~hz maxed, running most maxed older games at 100~Hz
>RX580 and GTX1060 6GB - 1080p@80hz maxed, 1440p@60hz at lower settings; RX580 better in newer games
>GTX 1070 - 1080p@130hz /1440p@60hz at high
>GTX 1080 - 1080p@144hz / 1440p@60hz maxed, 4k@60hz in a few games; Probably the highest end card you need for 1080p/1440p
>GTX 1080Ti - 1440p@144hz and 4k@60hz maxed/high in many games
>Good fucking luck even getting a VEGA right now

RAM:
>Check your Mobo QVL before buying any RAM
>Ryzen CPUs benefits a lot from high speed RAM

General:
ALWAYS LOOK AT PRODUCT REVIEWS!
Always consider an SSD. Try buying a large SSD for what you'd pay for your SSD+HDD combined, and add a HDD later
NVMe SSDs aren't for a faster OS boot, they're for productivity/scratch disk/VMs. NVMe and M.2 are not the same thing, M.2 is a form factor

>>GTX 1070 - 1080p@130hz /1440p@60hz at high

I'm hitting 144fps on 1440 on most of my games. It would handle 144@1080 just fine for most titles except maybe witcher 3 or battlefrog 1.

I need prices on 6GB GTX 1060s to drop down to a comfortable level.

I just need one.
>>
>>62010857
ill ask again since old thread died shortly after I asked this
Is it possible to get a riser or something so that I could split my 16x pcie port into 2 8x?
Or ideally the 8x to 2 4x
I want to have my raid card and my nic in my server so I could test this graphics card and possibly getting a second raid card so I can start moving over to bigger than 2tb disks.
>>
>>62010918
144@1080 is limited by CPU more than GPU.
>>
Is the node 202 a bad SFF case?
>>
>finished assembling new PC yesterday
>wanna do it again
fuck
>>
>>62010980
I'm on a i7-6700k so I'm good on that. I'm just saying, the gpu can handle more on games that are available at the moment. It seems wrong to say that it can't handle 144@1440 on high/ultra because it can for even the worst optimized games.
>>
>>62011028
Same here. Did a christmas/birthday build and only thing I've done is open it up to add a few more hard drives and clean it. I want to build a new one but I need to save for tuition and car insurance.
>>
>>62011057
Even 1080ti can't do 144@1440 at ultra for the latest AAA games like Dude Sex: MD or RoTR.
>>
Right now I've got a mishmash of three WD drives totaling 3.5TB

They're all years old and two are starting to make noise so I want to replace them all.

What's a good brand for 4TB drives that will see long term desktop use?
>>
>>62011344
The bigger the disk the more prone to failure it is due to more mechanical moving parts. A 4TB HD is just a HD with 4 1TB platters in them. I suggest buying a 1TB platter HD and storing all your important shit on it and then getting a large multiple TB HD for general storage.

I been researching through these parts for the past couple of days looking through reviews and compatibility.

And these are the parts I have assembled for a cheap/ budget $350-460 PC to used be for specifically for research and study purposes while listening to background music in my room.

Do I need a dedicated video card if I don't plan to play any video games any time soon on my computer?

I would like some feedback to save on cost or performance issues. I would also appreciates any recommendations for a mechanical keyboards or keyboard in general.
>>
580 for $300, yes or no?

currently have 280x slapped into a new r5 1600 build
>>
>>62011541
You don't need a sound card. You don't need a GPU. Get a G4560 or if you can afford it a G4600 and then use the iGPU. As for mech keyboards we have a /mkg/, you can ask them and they would give better advice than any of us could.

>>
>>62011531
Figure out your needs
Is your motherboard an mITX, mATX, or ATX? Does said motherboard have headers for front panel USB 3.0?
Do you want a window to see your components?
Do you want a shroud to hide the ugly power supply? Do you want to put a 2.5" SSD on display?
Do you have need for a 5.25" drive bay?
Do you have need for a front panel HDMI port (like for VR Gaming)?
Do you have a particular color combo you want?
Do you want tempered glass?
Do you want RGB integration?
Do you want good cable management?
And finally,
what's your budget? The vast majority of cases sold are $50 to $150, but there are some around $500

>>

Seem overpriced but if both 1060 6GB and 580 are overpriced, yeah why not.
>>
>>62011568
Thanks for your input, I will look into trying the G4600.

So it wouldn't affect my computer performances, If i left off a sound/graphic card? I plan to mostly use Microsoft words/spreadsheet with 30 tab web browsing? Can I try installing dirt cheap video/sound cards if I find them to be compatible?
>>
How much do NAS drives differ from normal hard drives? HGST is one so I'm wondering how much slower the real world performance will be.
>>
>>62011660
Most modern motherboard come with good enough onboard sound. Try those first. 90% of the population would be okay with them. Otherwise just buy a USB DAC and run your audio through it.
>>
>>62011675
NAS drives are rated for more read/write cycles and generally have longer warranties but as long as the speed rating is the same, there's no difference

I may just be tired as fuck, but I sort of like this case.
>>
>>62011713
It has all the fancy features while also not being overly flamboyant. It is a box. It is a $100 box. The $100 thing is the only part about it I dislike.
>>
>>62011713
Look up the s340.
This sort of case looking like a dust magnet with the front grill being hard to clean.
>>
>>62011779
Well yes, it is a dust magnet. Good ventilation means it will be a dust magnet. The issue with the solid face side opening cases is that, by every account I've heard that was honest, they sort of sacrifice cooling potential to look sleek.
>>
>>62011541
Get h110 motherboard, it should be cheaper.

I'm building a comp with a budget of roughly 1200 euros (frenchfag), i managed to save where I could (didn't take a dvd player as I saw I could use my soon to be ex-computer as a usb to install the OS)
I'm pretty much ready to order everything, but I have a few questions, should I put more money in and take an SSD, or is it not worth it ?
Also, since my build will be mostly for gaming and watching movies, Win10 looks like the only choice in the future. Is there a good way to prevent it from videotaping my genitals and sending it to the nsa ?

here's the link to my build (french site) https://www.topachat.com/pages/configomatic.php?c=JSVrLLDYnekbNBT4w12m5DGHP3fZi0HhT4HrDNI0BAE%3D

Black boxes... may actually have a tactical purpose. Black increases thermal conductivity.
>>
>>62012017
>may actually have a tactical purpose
Just like how "techwear" is meant to be utilitarian, but really it's just fashion whoring. The difference in thermal conductivity would be negligible.

>>
>>62011989
New ones? Not really, and if they do you'll pay a premium for it. Check Goodwill/thrift and ebay, just make sure they're not too old and can actually use ATX boards.
>>
Building my first PC today, just wondering before I start.
I plan to set it out quickly outside the case to check everything's working, as has been suggested everywhere, but do I then ensure it's safe to touch afterwards and there's no static? As it's just had power running through it. Do I just need to leave it for a bit after turning off?
>>
>>62011960
I'd recommend a gold-rated PSU, and yeah, I'd spring for an SSD, it's definitely worth it. You don't need a huge one, just get a 120gb if you're strapped for cash. Although an m.2 is super fancy and I'd rather have a 120gb m.2 2280 than a 500gb 2.5"

otherwise, your build's fine. As for windows 10, just dual boot and use linux for watching gay porn and only boot into windows 10 if you want to play vidyers

t. retard
>>
>>62012048
For static just have something kinda grounded and metal nearby and just give it a good fondle occasionally (your case usually works fine for this). Also don't put it together while standing on carpet while wearing socks, common sense type shit.
>>
Zen 2 wen?
>>
Did someone measured ryzen 1600x power consumption? I don't trust reviewers.
>>
>>62012102
who knows? the reason windows10 is so spoopy is because you don't know what it's capable of. If you're concerned about it spying on you, you'd obviously want to use it as little as possible. You might even want seperate hard drives for your linux and win10 installations instead of on one partitioned drive, but that seems overkill

as for dualbooting, if you use something like ubuntu, it's the simplest shit. Just click next like any installer, then use the GUI and google if you need to troubleshoot or look up a terminal command. Once you install the multimedia shit like mpv and a music player, it's basically the same thing as windows. The hardest part for me was learning how permissions worked for usb drives but it took ~ a day of learning.
>>
>>62012103
Thanks, I understand about avoiding static in general and have dealt with electronics before. I'm just concerned about running power through it to check it all works (before putting into case), then how I'd deal with the board directly after.
>>
>>62012161
Oh, you can just go right ahead and pop it in, nothing to worry about. Just make sure it's not plugged in while you do it (or at least have the PSU unplugged).
>>
>>62011960

>>
>>62012010
r5 1600 + whatever b350 mobo you like is ~$300
PSU should be ~$75 for a gold rated 550-750W depending on modularity (shoot for at least semi-modular)
RAM is pricier at ~$130 for 16GB 3200, you have some flexibility here if you think 8gb is enough although that's like bare essentials nowadays.
A small ssd + 1tb HDD is about $120
Now pick a case you like and suck a dick for a monitor

lanes/slots are not the same
if you want to run 2 devices of the same slot, then I think that could work? from what ive read before a lot of it depends on mobo/cpu and the way the chipset handles lanes, etc
but just look on aliexpress for pcie lane spliters, that way if it doesnt work you're only out like 10-20 bucks

Thanks, but it doesn't really have to be that small. The nuc is small enough.
But is a pi powerful enough to run movies on a 1080p screen?
If not, is it possible to build something myself (a "real" pc), which isn't a lot larger than the nuc?
Otherwise I'll just get the i3-nuc, and grab some cheap ram + some m2 drive.
>>
>>62012422
PC mate is cheaper because it doesn't have some bullshits lights and apparently the capacitors are maybe slightly cheaper.
I went for the PC mate, as they're essentially the same board, depends what you prefer looks wise.
>>
>>62012515
just go with the nuc
by going with a super small pc like that you'll pay more, and have something that is incredibly over powered for what it needs to be
you can look at other options to the nuc though, i know gigabyte has something like that, so does asrock iirc, and im sure others do. Hell even a compute stick might do what you need

Should I drain the power via the power button a few times (unplugged) to ensure there's nothing left in the board?

The G4560 costs $100 at Newegg right now, replace it with the AM4 Bristol Ridge APUs. They're cheaper, quad cores, are overclockable, have better iGPUs and have a much better upgrade path.

hmm, that means its basically a fx-4300, but honestly for "poverty" tier i would take saving 20-30 for lower performance, with the idea you can upgrade later to even a 1200
people seriously forget the value of an upgrade path to people really strapped for money, its a lot easier to upgrade one part at a time than step everything up all at once
>>
>>62012623
If performance is your main concern then you probably shouldn't be looking at buying Pentium CPUs in the first place, retard. If you have such a tight budget to spend on a PC then your main concern should be to spend as little as possible while having a decent upgrade path available down the line.

I just want it to be compact and well made, capable of housing ATX psu and Zotac 1080ti mini. Budget is around $200 for the case.

R3 1200 now or wait for i3-8100?

Also, XG2401 or XG2530? Is 240Hz worth 50% extra cost? The XG2401 also has better image quality (800:1 CR on the 2530 vs 1200:1 CR on the 2401) which makes me lean towards it a bit more.

get yo self a 1200. even if the i3 is better, the mobo will cost more, especially if you want to overclock, and you'll get a max of 2 years out of the socket, meaning a max of 4 maybe 5 years useful service out of it, assuming you upgrade to an i5 the last generation on the new socket
on the 1200 you get a socket supported until 2021+ CONFIRMED by mama su, at which point you can pop in the latest and greatest from amd, and at that point probably be set for 4-5 years.
>tl;dr
1200 = upgrade path through 2021, useful system through 2025+

>>
>>62013004
>threadripper
>gaming/coding
you can code on a fucking potato, as for gaming x299 would serve you better if you want to piss your money away, but better off going with something like a r5 1600
>>
>>62013004
best performance in that case would be a 1700 as the capture/render rig and a 1600 as the main gaming pc, with b350 motherboards as the base
for other stuff you're more on your own, i'll make a pcp link with freedom bucks but idk what prices are in maple syrup land
>>
>>62013058
Haha yeah I know, but I usually have a few VMs going at once to test so figured the extra performance there would be nice.
>>
>>62013087
with few VMs R7 is certainly going to be enough. R5 for higher frames in gaymes though.
>>
>>62013066
>>62013021
main rig
https://pcpartpicker.com/list/7B4cpb
capture
https://pcpartpicker.com/list/g6mwsJ
some notes:
if you can, buy a used gpu for the love of god. a 980ti for around 300-350 is a steal for the performance and will save you a lot over a 1070
if you want to save some more, you can go with a 1200 over a 1600 for the gaming computer, just know you will lose SOME performance
you could reuse case, save some there. I picked a average middle of the road case for the main rig
you'll need to reuse your video card for the capture rig, it wont do anything except supply video though. could also reuse psu for this one depending on wattage
could reuse hdd for capture rig or main rig as well
this doesnt include a capture card, which you dont need if you're not retarded
>>
Is it normal that when I turn on my computer the gpu fans roar at 100% for about 5 seconds and then the pc turns on normally(and the fans go normal)?

It's an old gtx210 that I'm using on a new build until 1070 prices drop. It did it before but for shorter (2-3 seconds), never found out if it was normal or not the 8 years I had it.
>>
>>62013181
that is normal
also next time put that kind of question in the /sqt/

can you guys take a look at this?
will be used for general computing, video encoding/editing, virtual machines, audio recording/producing, and some light gaming
did I miss anything? anything I should change? 980 ti is mostly a placeholder, ill take the best I can get used for 350 or lower, not buying new in this price range with the crypto mining going on
>>
Remember the stuff AMD said about Fury X?

"you gonna be able to overclock this thing like no tomorrow"..."this is an overclockers dream"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VJ-qKucpQu8&t=2973
>>
>>62013375
Looks fine to me. Even with a used 980Ti. It'll do until stock returns and you can get a good AMD card.
>but Nvidia is
just another company. Nvidia has a long history of fucking over consumers as well (Just like Intel), where AMD doesn't. Use the 980Ti until you can maybe get ahold of an RX Vega 56 AIB card
>>
>>62013417
in their defense, you kinda could after you bios modded the living shit out of it. i was able to get my fury x to around 1230-1250 depending on the application after upping power limit and pushing incredible amounts of voltage
but face value and especially at launch with locked voltage, it was an overclockers nightmare
>>
>>62013440
way i see it, if i buy used not a cent goes to pork shoulders, so no skin off my ass
id rather amd literally just for the drivers/freesync, but what can you do
>>
>>62013375
looks the same as every gayming build here. for your usage r7 1700 and more ram would be better but it's a solid build.
i would get at least 250gb ssd. also when buying hitachi hdds make sure you're not getting refurbished. "hitachi is the best" is just a meme so you can always buy toshiba/seagate.

>>62013440
why he should care? used 980ti for $350 is a great deal and vega is not worth buying at all.
>>
>>62013456
i was considering upping to 16gb already, will make the switch. is the difference in the 1700 really noticeable? if i switch to that ill need to drop the video card to something like a 970 or 290, which i dont mind, but still
>>
>>62013456
>why he should care?
because by next year, the 980Ti will be virtually unuseable in modern games. meanwhile, the AMD competitor cards will still be relevent
>>
>>62013489
>because by next year, the 980Ti will be virtually unuseable in modern games
is this what amd cucks actually believe? 980ti is basically gtx 1070 performance-wise. there's no way it's going to be unusable next year. why would that happen?

>>62013480
since you said you do video encoding and VMs then yes it would make more sense. do you need a 980ti for just 'light gaming'?
>>
>>62013489
>virtually unusable
fucking what
>>
>>62013539
>>62013530
he's exaggerating, but nvidia has a history of cucking their older cards' performance with driver updates.
>>
>>62013530
>for light gaming
you know, that's fair. the real reason i threw it on there was for the main game i play. I love witcher 3 and that game loves gpu horsepower, id love to just be able to crank it up and enjoy the view, but im sure a 970/290/etc will do just fine, and the faster encode times will matter a lot more
>>
>>62013546
you know, ive heard this over and over and ive honestly tried to find links showing a trend in performance, not per driver, and not a single game but the average and i cant
hell, hardware unboxed did a video comparing the golden fine wine card (7970) to the 680 and they were still neck and neck after 5 years
>>
https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/qzhTyf
Thoughts on this part list? Mainly going to be using this for gaming along with some video editing / rendering and overall multitasking. Is the R7 1700 worth it or should I go down to an R5 1600?
From what I've read the R7 1700 is not the best for gaming but it's better than stuff like the i7-7700k in just about anything else. Not sure how true that is though.
I was also considering a similar build with an i7-7700k but that ends up way more expensive, plus I don't want to give money to the intel jews.
Also I will be using this with the 850 evo SSD in my existing build
>>
>>62013571
dropping to the 1600 would save you some money, cost you virtually nothing in your main task, i would go for it. in gaming the 1600 is on par with the 1700, and it still beats the 7700k in multitasking like video editing, etc
also, avoid that motherboard and all asus b350 like the plague. go with msi for b350, better vrm, better success with ram
>>
>>62011811

Hi anons,
I've just finished a new built but things aren't going weel.

I've recetly purchased a Ryzen 7 1700, an msi x370 Gaming pro Carbon, a Sm
amsung ssd 960 evo (m.2) and 32GB of ram (Corsair CMK32GX4M4B3200C16). Everything is powered up through a 850W enermax Revolution 87+ PSU and I'm using an old GeForce 8400 as vga (it's just an old graphic card I use for testing: currently I'm waiting for vga prices to cool down).

Last saturday I've put everything together but my system won't post. My mobo has some debug lights and currently the "boot fail" light stays on and screen remains black. Before that, the cpu light was on, which means that cpu has not been detected or failed.

I've tried anything, including removing the vga and try using just one stick of ram but system still won't post. I assume mobo is not DOA since it beeps when there's no ram but I can't understand what's wrong.

According to msi compatibility section, this cpu and this mb should be working together since the first version of the bios.

Can you please help me, anons?
>>
Stupid question but how important is it to have all your monitors 144Hz? Currently I'm using a ratchet multi monitor setup where all of them are 60Hz but I'm considering getting a 144Hz one.
Would it be eye cancer to mix it with the other ones even if the other ones aren't going to be running 3D Applications?
>>
>>62014720
Try reseating the CPU? Thats my guess. Make sure all cables are plugged in, and yeah thats all I got

that was the idea. I've been waiting for the markets to stabilize for months, but it seems we'll be having this ethereum/cryptocoin craze for a while

Sadly I have already tried that with no success. I've double checked cpu positioning and all pins. Nothing bent, broken or damaged, I've plugged everything like it should be but still no post.

Thank you anyway, anon.

>>62014772
Yea. in my case, I'm looking at an RX 560 just to tide me over, an when the market stabilized grab a Sapphire RX 570 and put the RX 560 in my dad's PC to replace his R9 360 2GB

Yes, it is, anon. The x370 Gaming pro Carbon also has a dedicated debug led for ram failures or in case the sticks are not detected. It's the only debug led that never turned on (excepts when I tried running the system without ram).

still a fire hazard. Just get an AMD Ryzen chip instead on a B350 motherboard. It's less likely to catch your house on fire considering they rarely go above 60°, meanwhile, Intel chips will routinely peg at 100°. Both of those are in Celsius, not Fahrenheit.

it looses to the 7700k for roughly 5-7 fps, and you're still withing playable++ fps. at 1440p, with the 1700 you get the potential to do other things while gayming (e.g. streaming), plus you don't get a housefire that needs delidding.

I am assuming you mean some of the Sims games or whatever. Why sacrifice everything that the 1700 has to offer for the extra fps that won't matter anyway with a 7700k?

I had a 3rd gen i3. After 4 years of everday office work usage, temps got worse, and it idles at 40-44C at a room temp of about 22-26.
Why get a 7700k whose temps will get worse and worse instead of a soldered 1700?

Old simulator games give up a huge percentage on amd. This is why anon wanted an i7-7700k for a daily driver. The difference makes a game playable, or not. Any other person could get by with an r5-1500x-r7-1800.

not him, but you then have to buy games, as well as the fact that you're limited to one console then, as opposed to the pc where you can do anything you want, as well as pc stuff

There are shit tons of ways to get it for free

There are multiple activators like AutoKMS, ReLo or Microsoft Toolkit if you want to go that route. As far as I know the trick to still upgrade to Win10 for free doesn't work anymore.

If you don't want to pirate you can also use W10 fully functional without a key for eternity, you just can't change the appearance (i.e. Wallpaper, etc.) and you get a slightly annoying watermark

If you want to go semi legit, there are OEM Keys online on various sites for $10-30
