How to assemble a PC, select components & more (outdated)
https://wiki.installgentoo.com/index.php?title=Build_a_PC

CPUs:
No i5 unless discounted
>G4560 - poverty-tier builds
>R3 1200 - Budget builds (<$500)
>R3 1300x - Good stop-gap between the 1500x and the 1200, only get a 1400 if you absolutely need multithreading
>R5 1500x - Good but up to 1600 if you can
>R5 1600 - Best value for higher fps gaming / mixed usage; 1600x if you want higher stock clocks
>R7/Used Xeon/Threadripper - Compute/Multitask/VM/mixed use; Not for just gaming

GPUs:
Coin miners have driven price up and stock down, waiting to buy a GPU might be wiser
>Integrated CPU Graphics - Desktop stuff and very light games
>GTX 1050(Ti) - Lower end budget cards, drop settings on newer games, RX560 beaten by both
>RX570 - 1080p@60~hz maxed, running most maxed older games at 100~Hz
>RX580 and GTX1060 6GB - 1080p@80hz maxed, 1440p@60hz at lower settings; RX580 better in newer games
>GTX 1070 - 1080p@130hz /1440p@60hz at high
>GTX 1080 - 1080p@144hz / 1440p@60hz maxed, 4k@60hz in a few games; Probably the highest end card you need for 1080p/1440p
>GTX 1080Ti - 1440p@144hz and 4k@60hz maxed/high in many games
>Good fucking luck even getting a VEGA right now

RAM:
>Check your Mobo QVL before buying any RAM
>Ryzen CPUs benefits a lot from high speed RAM

General:
ALWAYS LOOK AT PRODUCT REVIEWS!
Always consider an SSD. Try buying a large SSD for what you'd pay for your SSD+HDD combined, and add a HDD later
NVMe SSDs aren't for a faster OS boot, they're for productivity/scratch disk/VMs. NVMe and M.2 are not the same thing, M.2 is a form factor

yes if you install a radiator on the front of the case it blasts hot air into your case and your components will die and if you put it on exhaust hot air can't escape your case because the radiator is blocking the exits

I'm helping a friend build a PC on a tight budget and I'd appreciate any feedback on what we've got so far. I haven't built a PC since the one I'm using 5 years ago so I'm out of touch with what's out right now. It will mostly be used for gaming.

Budget is $600-800

GPU: EVGA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti
CPU: Either an R3 or R5 depending on what the final budget actually is
Mobo: MSI Gaming AMD Ryzen B350 DDR4
PSU: EVGA 500Watt
RAM: Ballistix Elite 8GB Single DDR4 3000 MT/s (will upgrade to 16 if budget allows)
Storage: WD Blue 1TB SATA 6 Gb/s 7200 RPM
Peripheral: HP Pavilion 22cwa 21.5-inch IPS LED Backlit Monitor

Any real point in upgrading from a 4690k OC'd to 4.4GHZ to coffee lake? I realize it isn't out yet, but I figure if I'm a few generations behind there should be some kind of noticeable difference along with DDR4 right?

Not having any issues except for my CF 390s more often than not being barely supported, but I'm getting around 70-80% usage on my CPU nowadays.

what's your budget? with gtx 1080 you should choose between 1080p144hz, 1440p144hz and 4k60hz. 1440p60 imo isn't much of an upgrade over 1080p60hz.

1080p144hz are all TN panels (with an exception of 2 samsung monitors) so the colour accuracy isn't that good. it's the best choice if you play a lot of FPS/competitive games and stuff like that without spending much. good 1080p144hz monitor is ~$250 or less.
1440p 144hz monitors are great but cost a lot. if you're interested in that then check >>62018395 for models. they have everything that matters: resolution higher than full hd, high refresh rate and good colour accuracy.
4k60hz is when you don't care about higher refresh rate and just play singleplayer stuff / watch movies and also want a big screen.

>>62018578
1080p144hz would be a better choice imo.

>>62018558
yeah it will be fine
>>
>>62018489

I'd like to be spending sub 300. I'd prefer to have a 27" size. I'm not a 4k enthusiast so I'm not too concerned about those. I'll probably look more into 1080p 144hz.
>>
Is it worth it to save some extra cash to get the 1700 instead of the 1600 for stuff like Lightroom, Premiere and Ableton Live? Is the performance gain all that noticeable?

>Some Intel H110 chipset motherboards may need a BIOS update prior to using Kaby Lake-S CPUs. Upgrading the BIOS may require a different CPU that is supported by older BIOS revisions.
is this a meme warning or am I choosing the motherboard wrong, I'm just looking for the cheapest thing that will hold lots of drives for muh budget build
>>
>>62018662
the same person claimed that all PSUs are the same and recommended people to buy evga 500w for 7700k/1080ti builds

>>62018707
27" is already 1440p territory. on 1080p from a close distance you'll be able to notice pixels due to low pixel density.
with 1080p you shouldn't go above 24". viewsonic xg2401 is the best choice in that category.
>>
>>62018764
100 chipset was for skylake not kaby lake. You can flash the bios if you have a skylake cpu, otherwise it won't work.

>>
>>62018764
kaby lake cpus were released after h110 chipset motherboards, so in order to work on them the mobos need a BIOS update. ordering h110 is a gamble since you might get one with older bios, unless the seller guarantees otherwise. you can update bios yourself but you need a skylake cpu to do it. get mobo with b250 chipset if you want to be sure it works.
>>
>>62018730

depends on how easy it is for you to spend those extra dollars
I'd go 1600 and OC it to 3.8, getting absolutely best of the best value/performance CPU

it's worth it, even if you're color blind you could still see the difference and it has much better viewing angles, modern IPS pricing is so low that there's no point to go TN

144hz is good, but 1440p is just as good, if you're having a hard time to choose between, you have an option to buy Korea monitor like this

10 years is a LONG times. Having something with so much more raw power has to be worth something even if it is palatalized.

Is AMD also comitted to TR4 for a few generations like they are with AM4?
It seems that skylake X is also a good option but cooling is too much money ontop of a 7900x where as I'd barely have to spend shit to cool threadripper. Also delidding feels mandatory. I know the 7900x is way better than TR for gaming but I'm 100% content with the 1950x's gaming performance today.
I think it might hold that level of performance for far longer than something like a 1700 or 7700k even though those two are superior today right now.

>>
>>62020273
If you can get a 1060 6 at $300 or less it's not bad. The shitty ones were $260 when I bought mine on launch so it's only slightly more expensive.
Go used if you can find a good price on something. I passed up a $400 1080 for a $330 980ti with a water cooler.
Maxwell is nice because of the bios modding.
You might be able to find a 580 at $300 but it wont be easy.
580 vs 1060 comes down to the games you play. Both should be overclocked(undervolted sometimes for 580) for the best performance.
Shame a few months ago you could get a 480 for like $170 on sale

1500x. And the thought of using the stock cooler had occured to me as well. Unfortunately I am not terribly smart, and picked it up by the bottom plate. I ended up wiping off most of the pre-applied thermal compound, rendering it unusable for now. (The stuff that came with the other cooler had also been cleaned off the cpu with alcohol when I realized that this cooler wasn't going to work, so at the very least I need to put this build on hold until I get some more of that stuff.) Anyway, here's a picture of the cooler sitting on the board...

Hey /pcbg/
I am an amateur PC builder, looking into upgrades for my system.
I'm considering getting a new CPU but I'm certain I'll need a new motherboard too.
I mostly use the PC for video gaming, I have fairly mid-range parts.
Attached is my specs, could someone tell me what kind of motherboard and CPU I should be looking into? If anything else needs upgrading, I'm all ears.

Also I have a CPU mounted radiator but I saw my CPU spike to almost 90C the other day while playing MGSV.
I went into my BIOS and turned off OC and since then it's been more stable. I live in Florida so it's hot and humid all of the time but I still don't know why it would spike like that.
One time it even black-screened my monitor and all the fans kicked into 100%.
>>
>>62020967
you're going to need new ram too.

Windows 7 or 10? Is dx12 worth it? Any other reason to consider 10 besides driver support?

Also what's a good beginner's distro to dualboot with windows?
>>
Ryzen 7 1700 + GTX 1080 VS Ryzen 5 1600 + GTX 1060

How much of an upgrade is it in practice and what impact will it have on 1440/60fps gaming. And how about Ryzen 5 1600 + GTX 1800? didn't mention it initially because it's only like 100 bucks more, the GPU is the bigger leap

12 is not worth it, look at the performance difference and in most cases if you can already run the game it runs faster, if you're not hitting 60 then it wont get you there anyway
also its shit compared to vulkan. no reason to consider 10 except for native support for ssd, helps a bit with boot times, but 8.1 with start menu solves that problem too
beginners distro - xubuntu. you'll understand the desktop (xfce) pretty well as a windows user, and you can google for help just searching for ubuntu which has shedloads of help and documentation, since xubuntu is just xfce over ubuntu
>>62021097
if you're streaming the 1700 will kill the 1600, plain and simple. just gaming it will hardly make a difference, the 1600 may be a hair faster.
my advice, especially at 1440p, get the 1600, get faster ram (3200 cas 15/14, good samsung b die stuff), get a nice cooler, something like a h7, and get a really nice 1080, or if you can try to spring for a 1080 ti. The 1080 ti is a massive upgrade over the 1080, and realistically the go to card for 1440/144
>>62021179
the link
>>62021211
actually looks pretty ok. if you want though, consider using the am4 apu or the r3 1200 and a b350 motherboard. your initial performance will suffer slightly, but you'll have a guaranteed upgrade path until at least 2021, if not longer. The current intel motherboard offerings will not be compatible with 8th generation and forward, so you're limiting yourself to a 7700, non k at that since you cant overclock (which you can do on a b350, with any am4 cpu)
>>
>>62021098
>Is ASUS a good company to stick with for my next motherboard?
Check reviews. Brands don't matter because all companies make a dud now and then, don't rely on branding.

>>62021097
If you plan on sticking to 1080p for the mid-future, 1080 is probably useless. If you go 1440, you'll notice.

I've been on Windows 7 since 2009(?) when it came out. It's pretty much the modern day windows XP in a lot of aspects.

I installed Windows 10 on a separate partition just to give it a shot and I actually ended up putting it as the OS on my SSD.

It's had quite a while now since it's release to work out a lot of horrible kinks and I've found it got rid of a few GPU issues I had along with mouse problems. That could've just been some issue with my crummy old installation or drivers.

I can get an EVGA 980Ti Classified for $300 locally or I can drive 45 minutes and get an EVGA 1070 (not sure which model exactly, not FTW or anything) for $350. yes, the 7700k is better in a test bench scenario, but start running things like discord, chrome, skype, etc in the background and the performance goes away. beyond that, what does it matter if you're getting 170 instead of 180, its still well over 60, and at 1080p you're going to be more monitor bottlenecked than anything with a 1080, unless you're one of those 144hz fags

there is none. 7700k would get you ~10-15 more fps (only in 1080p ), but that's $150+ more expensive

Sorry one final question. That build list https://pcpartpicker.com/list/7ZztGf doesn't require anything else right? (Outside of a monitor.) No cpu cooler or anything else?
>>
Is the i5 4570 considered obsolete?
>>
>>62022304
no. obviously you need a keyboard & mouse.
for a 1080p144hz monitor get https://pcpartpicker.com/product/rY98TW/viewsonic-monitor-xg2401 . it's one of the best.
>>
>>62022293
To be fair you still need a B350 or X370.

I can imagine someone wanting to overclock, but getting the wrong board. But yes, at least AMD isn't hindering it at the CPU level.

>I should be able to afford $500 PC and play new releases on it right?
And then you recommend something that can actually play ""Recent AAA game"" at 30+ fps

>>
>>62022298
Thank you for your advice.
>>
>>62022338
overclocking on A320 would probably fry your mobo since they don't have good enough VRMs to allow it.
if this was intel, oc would be possible only on x370.
>>
>>62022304
the R5 1600 comes with a decent CPU cooler, which even allows some headroom for overclocking.
>>
>>62022331
Thanks I was looking at the monitors on there. I've got a mouse & keyboard I think are good? https://pcpartpicker.com/list/6GdBVY
>>62022372
I take it I'll want to overclock at some point? I've also heard of overclocking gpus? Or something similar? I'll probably watch a shit load of tutorials prior to even thinking about trying either though.
>>
24 or 27 inches for a 1440p monitor?
Also, same question but for 4k?

>>62022315
If it's not slow for what you use your pc for, no. For gayming, it should last a year or two.
>>
Decent backup external drives?
Looking at wd elements or Seagate backup plus/slim.
Anyone have experience with any of these? Looking for at least 2tb.
>>
>>62022395
that mouse and keyboard are hot garbage. is this your first ever gaming pc?
overclocking ryzen is really easy, do watch some tutorials if you want but there's really not much to mess up if you're going for a conservative OC.
>>
>>62022225
Besides aesthetic reasons theres no reason i got the 1600x with that fan. So im guessing no need for the x?
>>
>>62022338
If you're getting A320 you most likely are doing a media machine to stream in home or a facebook machine and neither need overclocking.
>>
>>62022433
>is this your first ever gaming pc
Yes. Basically my first ever pc in general not counting my prebuilt """"gaming"""" laptop.
Honestly I just picked the first two cheap mechanical keyboard & "gaming" mouse off a linus video without giving it much thought. I'll look for other ones though if they're bad. It's good to hear a lot of this stuff isn't as difficult or dangerous as I've been believing though.
>>
>>62022395
personally i would avoid peripherals that have the 'gaming looks' and go for something more classic from reliable brands like logitech.
imo the best idea to pick peripherals is to go to your local shop an just get something that you feel comfortable using.
>>
>>62022401
24 for 1080p
27 for 1440p
32+ for 4k
>>
>>62022507
I mean I recently purchased a Microsoft keyboard & mouse for this laptop but I imagine it's not practical for gaming or whatever mechanical ones do differently.
>>
>>62022491
yeah. you can always easily overclock normal 1600 to 1600x levels with the stock cooler.
>>
>>62022528
the cheapest 'gaming' peripherals usually has worse build quality and sensor than basic office stuff and act just as a bait for kids that like RGBs.
you absolutely do not need a mechanical keyboard for gaming and decent ones cost $50+ anyway.
i'd recommend just using the keyboard & mouse you bought and getting something else later if it's not comfortable to use.
>>
>>62022507
>>62022528
Trying out mouse is pretty important especially if going for the more expensive ones like G502 (when I bought it it was ~80e). How comfortable it feels depends on your grip (palm, claw, fingertip), size of your hand and mouse weight.
>>
>>62022225
Hows this?
https://pcpartpicker.com/list/6bdBVY
>>
1060 3GB = €210
6GB = €300-400
RX580 4GB = €300
8GB = €400

What should I get? The prices aren't going down since forever, only up and up and up
>>
>>62022574
>mouse weight.
this is why i usually don't recommend g502 to people. it's fine for most cases but can be a pain in the ass for people that play shooters at lower sens. currently G203 is the best budget mouse.
>>
>>62022529
But can you not overclock the 1600x potentially higher?. Alsi i jeed the pc.to be fairly quiet.
>>
>>62022569
>you absolutely do not need a mechanical keyboard for gaming
not really.

>just using the keyboard & mouse you bought
seconding this.
>>
>>62022618
To me the mouse isn't heavy but a friend of mine returned his because he felt it was. Also it's quite big so someone with smaller hands are going to find it uncomfortable. That's why trying out different ones is important to find the most suitable for you.
>>
>>62022597
>6GB = €300-400
What?
>>
>>62022634
>But can you not overclock the 1600x potentially higher
not really. it has better boost if you don't oc though.
>>
>>62022574
>>62022569
So mouse & keyboard I should buy from an actual store to see what they're like. I suppose that makes sense. What do you guys do for Os though? I just realized that I'll also need to get an os. So you just buy a windows 7 or 10 or whatever disk I assume? That's an extra 100 I assume
>>
Hey guys, I'm building right now my first pc (also thanks to you advices) and had no problems until NOW.

I'm trying to install the motherboard in the case, and even though they're compatible I just can't get the standoffs and the motherboards holes to align. What happens is that, once the motherboard is aligned with the IO shield, the standoffs are all 1/2cm "off". I have been struggling with this for the last hour and getting desperate!!

The case is a Corsair Spec-03 and the motherboard a b350 Tomahawk, but I don't think it depends on these pieces, I'm more asking for general advice. Maybe someone had the same problem in the past and can help me.

download the windows 10 installer, and either:
>don't activate
it doesn't stop you from using windows, but there's a small watermark
>buy a cheap key online
a 10 key can be had for under $40 usually, or you should be able to activate 10 with a 7 or 8 key
>unlock it with microsoft toolkit or similar
piracy, but it's free
>>
>>62022671
Pirate it or get the 1 month free version from Microsoft itself. After the trial ends they wont prevent you from using it, just restricting some features. They even provide a tool to make everything ready for you on usb drive. After that you can crack it or buy a cheap key from ebay, kinguin or whatever else key sites there are.
>>
Is there any webpage where I can put the components of the pc I want to build and the web can tell me if the compinents are compatible?

>>62022731
No, and you're stupid for think so

make sure the IO shield is pushed in all the way and try again, also don't be afraid to push the motherboard into alignment against the IO shield.

Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 6GB versions
>>
>>62022634
yes, but the difference is 0.1-0.2Ghz at best. it's just not worth it. also even if you managed to hit 4.0GHz the cooler you picked just wouldn't be good enough.

>>62022596
are you absolutely sure you need x370? because if you're only picking it for white aesthetic there's asrock b350 pro4. taichi is also a great choice btw

>>62022597
1060 3gb is the only one which is not overpriced. consider 1050ti.

>>62022671
you can get windows 10 key for cheap on ebay/kinguin/any cd-key selling site. you can just download .iso from microsoft and never activate it since all it does is putting a watermark on your desktop. or just use an activator.

So you are intel fanboys vs amd fanboys in this thread ?
Fuck I wanted your help not a ficht between fanboys
>>
>>62018822
I don't see what's wrong with that. Socket 775 lasted like 7 years with slight modifications. The only ones that get shafted from this are motherboard manufacturers, and they don't even get that much because they can just keep making and selling the same board, maybe do some refreshes. I mean the kind of autist that buys a new CPU every refresh probably will buy a new mobo with "enhanced support for processor X" or whatever and latest bios, and people who just buy a new system will buy it anyway, refined platform etc.
>>
what are the 5.25 bays for?
>>
>>62022748
I am sure the IO shield is perfectly in (initially had issues with that), and pushing with no fear whatsoever but the misalignment is not in the direction of the IO shield, the motherboard when perfectly pushed is aligned with every standoff but every hole is 1/2cm too low. I can obviously align a single hole with its standoff but then the other ones get even farther.

he never said it's wrong. it's actually an extremaly good thing that amd doesn't force you to buy a new motherboard every 2 generations. 200 series mobos from intel are like 6 months old and already on their way to be obsolete.

Right now AMD has the best price:performance:voltage ratio intel has the best single threaded performance. So if you are looking only for the highest possible fps in gaming and bothin else get a 7700k. Right now that is the only cpu that is relevant for Intel. If you are planning on mixed usage with medium to heavy gaming get an r7 1700 or an r5 1600. They are better in almost every way except for single threaded performance. I5s are dead don't get one and i3s are handily beat by the r3 series for the sole reason on the 4c/4t the r3 has. In summary read the op.

If I have a Ryzen 5 1600, which GPU will give me more frames at 1080p on High or Ultra settings between the 1060 6GB and the 1070 considering that I heard the 1070 could bottleneck some games at 1080p if combo'd with a r5 1600?
>>
>>62020771
Thermaltake. Let no one tell you otherwise
>>
>>62025810
the 1070 is faster, it will be faster
you're misunderstanding the bottleneck. imagine the gpu is a pipe with water and it flows into the cpu. the 1060 moves less water than the 1070, so it is less restricted than the 1070, however, through brute force and size the 1070 will still move more water, albeit it will be more limited
or, alternatively, the 1070 will be used say 90% of its max, the 1060 will be pegged at 100%, the 1070 will still win
