We are living the start of a golden age of mechanical keyboards. Chineses finally ripped off dsa keycaps, so we can buy them for more accessible prices. We did it reddit!

hello /mkg/ i've felt very inept for weeks now trying to look for mechanical keyboards
>Budget
up to $80, but i would really prefer $50-60
>Location
united states, new york
>Preferred switch type
red, i don't mind knockoffs, anything with easy double-tapping is good too
>Layout
don't mind any, but i like the backwards L-shaped ones?
>Form factor
must have numpad, others are unimportant
>Backlight
no but i don't mind

this is mostly for gaming, i don't mind a horrendous typing experience
i treat the numpad and spacebar as importantly as any other key, so big spacebars would be really cool
>>
>>62004716

All the shit you see today: Buckling springs, Cherry MX, Topre, Hall effrct, Alps, as well as all these keycap sets like adler, olivetti, agol, space cadet, and their profiles like cherry, DSS, SA, Hi-pro, etc. Was all made back in the 80s. All whats left today is just clones. Even shit like these "new" analog switches is based of old 80s technology. For a long time these switches and profiles were lost, but recently they've made a come back. The golden age of computing is long gone, but that doesn't mean we can't still use them.

I have white version of this, keycaps are fine (probably better than cheap Chinese keycaps that people still buy). But, if you want to change them, choices are limited.

PCB build quality is not that great, once I opened the thing, first thing that I noticed is exceptionally shitty solder used :( Who knows how long will this last.

On the other hand, if you like clicky switches, they are some of the best.

>>62009400
I'm pretty sure most of them are about $220. But I can't tell if your being serious or feeding into the meme.
>>
>>62009410
No, Topre is less likely to fail because it's also capacitive. There's no moving parts or contacts to go bad, the only thing that might fail is the rubber domes stiffening or something over time - but the dome sheet is incredibly easy to replace.
>>
>>62009410
People seem to have forgotten how shit cherry MX switches are since a good rubber dome keyboard is more durable. Topres will outlast any MX switch.

Topre switches aren't meant for consumer keyboards. a thousand people really isn't a lot for a business. you are overestimating the amount of people who are signing up for these group buys. keycap companies are mostly geared towards commercial uses, not the enthusiast market.

alps-style switches are rare. basically the only company still making them is matias. alps does not make switches anymore. only a fraction of the people buying matias keyboards would even care about changing keycaps.

Speaking of JIS, are there any "cheap / good" keycaps? Most I see, at least the ones that get shilled here, are always expensive.

Wondering if I should just pay for a small JIS keyboard or find a more popular / cheap US one and buy jp keycaps. That seems like the pricier option.

Moving only wrists IS high sensitivity. Real Quake men move their whole arm with the wrist solidly in place because it's a weak and imprecise joint. Similarly, any proper artist would make their strokes with arm only ever so slightly moving the wrist for wild, flowing lines.

Sending people back to /v/ is a meme. You deserve it though for >>62012219. You're obviously supposed to lurk for or read archived /mkg/ threads at least two years back.
What you really need is a keyboard like Ducky with desirable switch type (linear/tactile, clicky/"quiet") and a pack of 180g springs to replace in them: https://mechanicalkeyboards.com/shop/index.php?l=product_detail&p=2310
This will really make the difference.

>>

If you already have keycaps, consider the wasd barebones kit. Starts at $95

I'm looking into getting a smaller keyboard to replace my G710+ with something smaller and more suited for programming, which I will be going to school for soon.

My question is should I go 60% or TKL? Learning keyboard shortcuts won't be an issue, but I've heard of people having problems using a 60% with some IDEs default shortcuts.
>>
>>62016797

I have 2 masterkeys keyboards. They're pretty decent quality, with the only downside being the keycaps.

If you're going to get a Coolermaster board go with the new Masterkeys PBT line. The keycaps are much nicer, with the rest of the board being literally the same quality.

If you're actually planning to use your keyboard in class either get an HHKB, a KBP v60 with Matias quiet clicks, or a KBP v80 with Matias Quiet clicks. (if you decide you want a TKL instead of a 60%).

KBParadise also makes their v60 and v80 line with Matias quiet linear switches, but they're suuuuper light and much more of an acquired taste than the quiet clicks.

Hey, don't get me wrong. I got nice headphones, a separate sound card that has headphone amplifier and also changed its op-amps. I can hear the difference between lossless and lossy compression. I have nothing against sensible investment in better sound quality - especially since the equipment doesn't degrade or depreciate as quick as the rest of computing garbo.

But then there are idiots who buy a ton of equipment then spend thousands on some meme cables made of pure diamonds - and magically discover new instruments and extra sound stage they weren't able to enjoy beforehand. Even if the solution was simple as hell: just reconnect the cables better.

The video I linked has all the switches recorded under the same conditions so you can compare them.
You just need to match the sound of whatever you're using to something as close as you can in the video (if you're using cherry reds, find a keyboard in that video using reds and adjust the volume to match what yours sounds like) while it's playing through speakers (download a db meter on your phone or something)

Just because there is a plate, doesn't mean it isn't soldered. If you have a soldering iron: heat it up, disassemble the keyboard, gently pull on the switch while heating the solder on both contacts. Don't apply heat for more than a couple of seconds, it might cause some damage. Grabbing onto it without a stem won't be easy...

Look for PBT, doubleshot or dye-sub, in cherry profile. I remember when I was looking for caps there are lots of pbt doubleshot see-thru caps for backlit boards.

I mean will any caps work?
I see all the sets of like 108 and shit, that one only has 84. Do they make sets of just 84?

They need to be cherry style so they will fit on your switches. There are sets for non-standard sizes, but your options will be much more limited. Most will just buy the full set and use what they need.

your right shift and right Altm fn, Ctrl keys are non-standard length and some (most!) sets won't fit
Look for sets with 1.75 u right shift and 1u modifier keys, or just buy a standard 108, 104 or 87 key set and then buy those 4 keys separately

how good are knockoff switches. Looking at some skyee s from aliexpress for the low.

If you want clicky switches, you should honestly get a buckling springs board like a model m or a clicky alps board.

I bought a blue switch keyboard specifically for office use.
My coworker won't stop making weird mouth sounds whenever he's eating something (and he's constantly eating something) so now I'll be the louder one.

Because normies love Browns and gaming fags get nothing but Reds (now Silvers) marketed to them.

Gateron is arguably better than Cherry, but everyone else is considered below-average and priced accordingly.

The case coating is like rubber seems like low quality internals, had problems with light settings doing what I wanted, I had the small version and sent it back. Got a g610 when it was on offer, pity it has a non standard bottom row, I did make a mistake there in a way. Feels better quality than the masterkeys pro s though and was close to half the price, no rgb though.
