I have 16GB, so I tested out a typical scenario of a PC user. With 10 tabs open in Chrome, music playing, Steam open, playing Playerunknown's Battlegrounds, I was hitting about 10-11GB of RAM. And this is with relatively little bloat, if I had OEM trash running it would be even worse. So yeah, if you play modern games I don't think 8GB is enough.

No that guy but I work in the same field. You can say the software is bloated, and optimization may play a small part, but really it's just the amount of data that you're dealing with.

For example:
Photoshop - Working with large resolutions and lots of layers eats gobs of memory.
After Effects - Previewing lengthy comps with lots of layers eats gobs of memory.
3D - For VFX, dynamics simulations tend to be the most memory intensive. You can easily burn through 64GB of RAM with a complex smoke/fluid/whatever solve.

And like he said, you often have a bunch of these applications open at once because you're shuffling data between them. You can often work around not having enough memory, but it eats into productivity, which of course is boneheaded.

realistically, if it can run firefox at all, its enough for 4chan shitposting
if i had some light linux distro on this thing or something it would be perfectly fine for shitposting on 512mb of ram

further, i use to shitpost from a thinkpad R30 with a 1ghz Pentium III and 256mb of ram running lubuntu 12.04 using firefox, and that could handle ~10 tabs of various websites just fine

8gb of ram is plenty for the modern desktop, should be with any bog standard quadcore like an R3 1200 or Pentium G4560
16gb is reccomended for people who game and multitask with other applications open too and should have a nicer quadcore like an i5 or R5
if youre into content creation and know you'll need it, of course bump up to 32-64gb or more and a high end multi core processor like one of the x series i7's or an R7

8gb of ram is fine for maybe a laptop. Upgrading to 16 on my desktop was probably the best decision i made in a while.

It takes the least effort to just shove more sticks in there and call it a day.

That being said it's still a valid solution.
If time spent maintaining your PC is more valuable than just purchasing 32/64GB of RAM, then sure - you're better off this way.
Or perhaps you have a specialized usecase that needs it.

not really, video editing is more CPU and GPU dependant, timeline and effects edits don't require loads of ram because it reads from disk. Video editing is however super hungry for disk space

8GB is enough ONLY if you're just one of those gaymurtards. If you have any need to run heavy software under VMs, you need more. If you must run an IDE and some emulators, you need lots. If you have a multi-layered project that requires more than one IDE (for language reasons or whatever), you need more.

Try debugging a project with separate back and front end in JavaEE, with around 3000 webservices between them and then tell me if even 12GB were enough. 12GB is the minimum for it to even start up, but will take at least 1h to do so.
