Just the chunk of aluminum that big costs at least $70+ (I think it's closer to $90). Then you have CNC machining time and the time to clean it, sand it, anodize it... there's at least 4 hrs of work in that thing.

We are spoiled by cheap chink shit because chinks get paid $6 an hour.

I would say no more than about 10mm of excess material around the top, and preferably some form of visual interest rather than a big blank block like Rama designs and the Norbaeur have. For example, I quite like TX keyboards' usage of cases with the top section that is smaller than the bottom section, creating a step.

So I had no idea my year old magicforce 68 actually has one of the heaviest linear switches. Outemu black. I can't suggest these things enough. I also have a board with blues and reds and these are probably the best feeling, definitely way better than reds.
Some times I will switch to my noppoo with blues but I use this more often and the noppoo was $100.
Its such a shame that they seem to have only made one batch of the magicforce. There are several variants available at launch when I bought it that are no longer available. Like I cant find any in black.
If anyone is looking to try a new switch I highly recommend outemu blacks. They're cheap and feel wonderful. I can not wait to buy my first set of o-rings after having mechs for a decade and see how that affects the board. I think heavy switches with a shorter actuation distance will result in a higher WPM.

Surely, both typewriter layout and QWERTY are anachronisms and likely the biggest baby duck syndrome in the world - but I haven't seen an "ergo" keyboard with anything but self-claim.

I switched to Dvorak and learned touch typing along with it a few years ago. "Typing faster" is bullshit but it's definitely more comfy to use. The huge downside is compatibility: shortcuts are all over the place (Linux and Mac, IIRC, have "preserve keyboard shortcuts flag" - but I'm a winfag), some games have big issues with it (e.g. Source-based add extra QWERTY layouts) and other systems won't have it (i.e. you have to know QWERTY or embarrass yourself by looking at the keys). All in all, touch typing was the best thing to acquire.

Today I had an idea, and laid down a few sketches and 3D models of what might be a new switch.

I will start by saying that I have absolutely no idea if this thing can be produced, produced cheaply, or if can even operate without breaking after a few strokes, because I ran no simulation nor I did any actual calculation for lack of time (tomorrow I'll go on holiday so today I had to pack my bags), but I wanted to submit the idea to you guys nonetheless.

Now, pic related is what the force profile should be. It's purely qualitative, as you can see, and it can be easily adjusted by changing springs' stiffness and the internal geometry (assuming it can be made and it works, of course), just keep in mind that the sections 2,3,4 have the same inclination, as well as 1,5,6.

What do you guys think? Would you be interested in such a mechanical switch?

Nothing like it. I drew inspiration from the mechanism of a common everyday item, and because of this I fear it might already be protected by a patent in a way or the other, although purpose, application and functionality are completely different.

Using the white rgb bluetooth 45g one right now.

There really aren't any major flaws, however the domes basically feel linear with a higher resistance at the top, if that matters to you, you can get dome sheets off of ebay that might be more tactile. Mine did come with the upstroke o rings which shortens the key travel very slightly which might also contribute to the linear feel, can't say for sure though. The cable channels on the underside are also very tight and leave marks on the cable and some of the topre-mx sliders have stems that fit a bit tight on some keycaps. Otherwise I haven't really had a problem with it and most problems are very minor. Even though they weren't as tactile as I hoped it to be, the switches are miles smoother than any board I've owned before and the sound is also very satisfying.

Sounds like buyer's remorse there. You should never have to fix any of your keycaps with "black sharpie". Regular LEDs are just fine with illuminating keys, besides, a switch should be made to actuate correctly every time, not focused on putting a fucking LED in the middle of it and giving it two leaf contacts that cause key chatter.

People usually don't like DSA profile because it mostly feels like typing on a flat laptop keyboard. The Granite set has larger legends with some color accents and the option to have icon modifiers, but if you like the smaller legends of your keycap set, just go for it.

So I've been entrenched with RGB keyboard meme gimmick, I like being able to choose whatever color single backlight I want or use applications to control the effects for things like an audio visualizer to add to ambient lighting when I'm just chilling out to some music.

Currently I'm using a Razer Blackwidow X TE Chroma, and I love the software lighting controls, lighting SDK, and third party program compatibility for the lights, but the switches and caps, though not bad, don't have my hopes up for longevity, though they show they're holding up much better than the Rosewill and older Razer switches.
Corsair boards look terrible and I really despise cherry reds along with the shitty caps for the price (even though they can be changed).
Ducky keyboards have everything but the software control, taking all the appeal out of the lighting.

Sounds like you're more interested in a light up toy than an actual keyboard. The only good RGB boards I can think of are the Ducky Shine and CM Masterkeys Pro. While the RGB software for Razer, Corsair, and Logitech are better, their keyboards are crap. You either have to deal with non-standard bottom rows, shitty Greetech switches, or even worse Romer-G switches; all while they have shitty ABS keycaps.

to be t b h, the difference between the feel of the greetech switches and the older cherry blues in the deceased Rosewill I keep around feel very similar, main difference being Razer's shitty, thin, ABS caps. Feels virtually identical when I put some of the still shitty, but not painted Rosewill caps on the Razer. Typing feel's not bad.
For the caps, I could just get some Vortex doubleshot caps or something.
If the Ducky One TKL or similar came out with software controls, it'd be perfect.

The main issues for corsair, for me, are the fact the K65 only comes in reds, that they've gone too far down the gamer gear design path, and for that price, getting keycaps that chip more easily than anything I've seen.

Then I guess I'll stick to the Razer, I don't mind replacing switches if I have to later on down the line, but 3 more years of warranty I think will have me covered if any do fail.
And for the record, I don't look at my keyboard as I type, there's a reason why I said I like it as ambient lighting. Otherwise, I don't like my keyboards to have lighting at all.

There's a night and day difference between thin ABS keycaps and thick PBT keycaps, so if anyone is false-flagging, it's you. Usual stock OEM keycaps that come with something like Razer are thin and feel cheap, while PBT keycaps usually are thicker and feel much sturdier (and usually come in superior Cherry profile).

So I've had my Anne pro with gateron blue for a few months now and I wish I never bought it. I hate the loud high pitched clicking noise and the soft mushy feeling of my piece of crap membrane keyboard is preferable to me over this typing on tic tacs experience. I ended up going back to the old membrane keyboard because I was losing my mind but It's really not ideal. The biggest issue with ABS is keycap shine. After a couple months you'll get shine on your keycaps, while PBT keycaps are resistant to oil and never shine. POM is a lesser used material that's similar to PBT. Like this anon said >>61876602, the thicker the keycap, the better the typing experience. The sound is also different and will give you more of a "thock" sound. As for the best looking keycap profile, that's up to you, but you really should be looking for the best to use. Most people like to use Cherry profile as their preferred profile, but I personally think SA is much nicer to look at. Using SA though is a painful experience, so I only use Cherry instead.

Got one with the Romer switches myself and tbqh it's not that bad. The keys don't need that much force to activate and when you ground them they have a nice click sound to them. The price is pretty good so I'd say go for it if you feel like your hearts set on it.

I will add that you might like Cherry Reds better. I tried a K70 with them and found them a lot more smother and gentler to the touch than the Romer switches.

Gateron Browns are better than Cherry Browns by a mile, Cherry Browns feel like Reds with dirt in them while Gateron Browns actually have a clear bump that you can actually feel. And Gateron Reds are considered one of the best linear switches there are, no other switch is as smooth as a Gateron switch.

I have its little brother the 82. The keycaps suck ass and look like shit, but there was no other option for a cherry mx clear board in that form factor. I switched them out with the keycaps from my Ducky. This isn't an issue on the 108, but on the 82 several of the keys are non standard so I just kept them on. The construction is great for a chink board and there is also a dip switch on the back that switches caps locl and ctrl

The reason why mechanical keyboards fell out of style was that they were to expensive to produce. Cherry on the other hand were shit enough that they only offered a ~$20 premium over regular membrane keyboards so they survived. Now days they are the consumer standard simply because all the good switches went bankrupt. Unfortunalty there is nothing good right now on the market, but maybe matias will help change that. The best advice I can give is to get old mechanical keyboards for the 90s like Alps or Buckling springs and try those out.

Everything is about Cherry MX as a format though, since the patent expired there are lots of better and worse clones of it. Its physical size and cross-shaped stem is pretty much a standard used in almost all projects and custom keycaps. As for the switches, people seem to praise Gateron these days.
There are Alps/Matias switches that I'm considering for my DIY - but there are less projects with mounting plates that support it. Another problem is key caps availability: only a few companies offer them, and I'm worried that sizes they have might not be compatible with all projects.

Omron doesn't have a good track record with mechanical switches. Just look at their old ones and you can see that they aren't very durable at all. Romers might be different, but with over 30 years of failure I'm still skeptical. They are faster and more responsive then cherry switches, but so are chiclet keyboards. The actuation might be silent, but the noise of the plastic hitting the bottom and the top of the housing is always louder then a rubber dome, unless you dampen them.

I've used my Cherry MX Blue keyboard at home for several years and I love it, but I can't bring it to work because it's far too loud.

Browns have a similar actuation force, but I'm not sure how that tactile bump would feel.

Depends on a lot of factors, like whether you want a sculpted profile or a flat one, whether you are okay with blanks, and whether the stock spacebar will work with the new set or it needs to include 5.5u one.

The non-standard things about it are 5.5u spacebar, 1.75u right shift and PgUp, PgDown and End being on different rows compared to standard layout.

Typically the spacebar is the biggest issue, but now there are some sets on aliexpress that include it.

Not sure what size or switch you're looking for but I am about to pre-order the ducky tkl w/ clear switches. Only $90. Im also getting it for coding, not a gaymer
