As far as 96 key keyboards go that one is my favorite simply for the case. The RS96 is pretty close, but it doesn't have the cut outs for the RGB underglow, unless you pay double the price. The ZZ96 is also pretty good, but I don't like the back of the case.
>>
>>61841645

Race 3 is decent if you're fine with DSA profile keycaps, and of course there's the problem with the non-standard esc and del key. If you can get past that, it's a decent keyboard. I usually recommend Cherry profile, so I think boards like the Tada68 and KBD75 are better.
>>
>>61844085
What? All RS96's have RGB underglow. The standard case just has a frosted translucent acrylic sheet all along the bottom, while the deluxe case limits it to the back and part of the sides.

>>
>>61848155
Tada is great. Gat blues are great also, but apparently wobblier than cherry.

MODs are a meme, just get gat browns (unless you REALLY want meme tactility, but if you've been using cherry blues you probably don't). Yes, gateron browns are actually properly tactile, like a blue without the click, unlike cherry's piece of shit.

Why the distinction between typing and gaming? What do they even mean with "gaming"?

What makes the blue worse than browns for gaming, but better for typing?

The brown switches seem the most appreciated, but I tried them and they feel like there's sand between the slider and the casing. Do blue feel the same?

Are Cherry MX Brown switches a meme? I don't want a clicky noise but I want a nice tactile bump
>>
>>61849115
Usually when people talk about a switch for gaming they want linear switches so their key presses are as fast and accurate as possible, which is also why stuff like speed switches exist. I've heard people have issues with blues sort of registering incorrectly when people try to quickly actuate a key twice.
Blues are supposed to be better for typing because of all the feedback they provide, both auditory and physically. I don't really think it makes a difference.

MX Browns are also confirmed awful, the bump is too small and they feel like dirty linears. If you want tactile, try MX Clears or MODs. If you want smooth try Gateron Clear or Outemu Purple. If you want both prepare to drop a lot of money on Zealios or spend some time with lube.
>>
>>61849696
If you want a tactile bump then cherry mx browns are exactly what you don't need. Get Gateron browns or Cherry clears

Fuck, all the keyboards I find on amazon are gaming shit marketed at gaymers, and nothing inside EU seems to have switches that are not Cherry MX Brown or Blue, or even Red. I've found a few with Topre, but fuck me those things are more expensive than half my PC.
>>
>>61849768

The thing is in moderation. Code too much and one day you will be in the run from CIA niggers. The true way is to play twitch shooters to hone reflexes and quick thinking, write code to improve logic and problem solving and socialize on 4chan to expand your knowledge and satisfy social needs.
>>
>>61850091
This

Opinions please. I have same issue
>>
>>61850290

>socialize on 4chan

holy shit this is the worst idea ever
>>
a couple of days ago i made a post whining about the corsair strafe. corsair came though and provided info on fixing the problem. i still feel like i want to hop on a ducky shine 6 with reds. should i? i game a lot. almost too much. i do some programming on the side.

Will blue fuck me in games where i have to repeatedly press a key very fast?
>>
>>61850176
He meant stuff that require quick multiple presses. It can be a problem since switch is activated midway and tactile bump is felt before it. So it might be taps on a key that is defacto held or released.
>>
>>61850275
so it all basically boils down to "muh feelans" and no objective measure. Browns have a soft d tent feeling to them but they hardly feel terrible to type with.
>>
Got an aukey kmg3 for my first mechanical keyboard. Howd I do?
>>
>>61850323
If you play rhythm games then maybe. If you think mechanical keyboard will make you a better gaymer or typist then you fell for the placebo. With cherry blues double tapping isn't that much of an issue since you can still actuate the switch again before the slider has returned to its original position. People like reds for double tapping since you can hover around the actuation point and quickly move up and down
>>
>>61850350
what do you mean by soft d tent feeling?? Thinking about grabbing a cherry mx brown ducky one
>>
>>61850350
>machanical keyboards
>basically boils down to "muh feelans"
Yeah that's literally the whole point.
>>
>>61843669
So, is anyone planning to get Wooting one?
I'd seriously consider it IF they used black switches or something even stiffer. Red seems too soft for precise analog input, and non-linear blue one just doesn't fit the idea of smooth analog control
Unless their version of blue and red translate to something different
>>
>>61850415
just spring swap
>>
>>61850350
any real argument about switches here are subjective claims, overall arguments are always going to be about personal experience, whether they prefer a heavier switch, or prefer a clicky or tactiler/linear switch, it always boils down to how someone feels about it. same way with anything else really, readig reviews "based on personal experience. the only realy "objective argument" here potentially is how they're literally the lightest cherry switch.

i know a keyboard wont make me a better anything. i also know that typing on membranes make my fingers hurt, and that i could have done a lot better than a strafe as far as spending money on a mech board. dont assume my reasoning for getting a mech keyboard. the most i care about is not using this corsair board anymore because merely looking at it pisses me off.

>membranes make your fingers hurt
>>
>>61850430
so why are browns consistently picked on over other switches?
>>
>>61850350
Are there even any objective measurements of a switch? You could say that Browns are worse then Clears due to the 30g lighter force, but then you go right back to tumblr tier arguments about how light switches don't feel good.
>>
>>61850503
i have had nothing but bad experiences after extended gaming/typing on those cheap 20 dollar logitechs and the boards available on campus. end up with sore fingers, especially my left thumb and middle fingers, something i dont experience while using my strafe.
>>
>>61850534
can you guys stop being autistic for just a sec and tell me whether to get a brown or clear switch? clear switches aren't easy to find so I think i will go with brown then swap them with clear in the future if i want
>>
>>61850526
Because they're the best
>>
>>61850394
its hard to explain. d tent is a /toy/ term. those kinds of ratchet joints that dont feel snappy or clicky, but rather "bassy" bumps. its ALMOST imperceptible but its there.
>>
>>61850526
because people prefer other switches to it. I honestly prefer MX Greens myself but I never really liked the tactility of Browns because it doesn't feel as good in my opinion to say Black Alps, on top of that it's just a light switch and I constantly hit the wrong key when typing because I'm used to a heavier switch. I have nothing really against others using browns but it's just not something I would use myself.
>>
>>61850638
if theres about as many switches per preference, it makes no sense that people shit on browns more often than other switches.
>>
>>61850608
There is measurable stuff like activation force, force graphs over travel distance (i.e. when tactile bump felt, if there is any, and when switch is activated). But in practice memechanical keyboards are all about how they feel under your fingers, how good they sounds and how they look.

Browns are one of the most popular switches.
>>

modifiers don't count towards the limit, and the 2kro simply means you can't hold three keys on three different traces at the same time. If you look at the matrix you can see the different lines laid out, but you can hold down as many as you want on that line

Or... people try different switches and see firsthand that MX brown is the best all-arounder for people who value quietness.

It's hilarious to hear squiddies talk over in game voice, their MX blues snapping like staccato thunder claps, echoing through their room so loudly you can actually hear the green LEDs. MOM SO COOL TAKKATAKKATAKAKA MOM

This is of course true, and the other MX switch types have valid uses, but for most people MX brown is the best compromise of feel, noise and weight. The people saying hurr sandpaper its literally like typing on molasses i can literally feel grains of literal sand in literality are just meming.

I had the chance to try MX Brown switches and the tactile feedback was literally lost while typing fast. however when pushing keys slowly the tactile feedback was more akin to the key not running smoothly, like there was dirt inside them, rather than an actual force peak.

I know this is a totally personal opinion, but I had the same tactile experience while slowly turning the wheel of my skates: dirt in the ball bearings.

Sup /mkg/, I have a rosewill rk9000 I bought 3 years ago. The mini usb port on it has started to fail on it (I'm not rough with it or anything) causing disconnects when I'm typing, playing games, or just whenever I move it a bit. The issue is only getting worse. Apparently it's a common as hell issue with this keyboard due to bad soldering on the port. I don't know anything about soldering so I can't judge it for myself, but I figured it would be a lot easier and cheaper to just replace the port on it rather than buying a new keyboard. How hard is it to solder a new port onto it? Is it easy enough for a beginner?

If you have reasonable equipment (like not a $5 ratshack iron that can't heat up a ground pin) soldering is stupidly easy. Apply flux, make metal parts hot and then feed them solder. Solder will flow right on to the parts if they're hot enough. It's ready to fuck and wants all up on that shit.

Switch preference is totally subjective bullshit. You think that you like browns because they are "the best all-rounder", but in reality you just happened to like them and now trying to invent justifications for that.

Like people who don't like browns often say that browns are shit at everything and are the worst switch.

This shit literally doesn't matter at all. I thought I'd like browns before getting my first mech. Upon actually trying different keyboards in real life, I discovered that I dislike tactile feedback in all cherry-like switches, and out of them I like linears the most. It's not because they are good for gaming or fastest in general, I just happened to like using them more. Tactile feedback just annoys me and gets in the way.

So use whatever you like, just don't pretend there are objective reasons for it.

Penumbra

https://originative.co/products/sa-penumbra

If you want to know why the price is rape, to make a very long story medium‐length, the manufacturer gave exclusive rights to the guy who ““““designed”””” this set (literally another guy thought of the idea of applying Solarized to this keycap profile and then said go for it) and he just sat on the IP for two or three years after the first sale (because he is a retard who takes literal years to ship) while the mechanical keyboard community blew up and the price jumped several hundred percent

He then permitted Originative (who price gouges) to do a sale but instead of doing a group buy and interest check he made pointless and irritating but minor changes and bought 500 sets (that, at least, is understandable since the lead time for these is almost a year) and slapped a fucking egregious price on it

I'm looking to buy my first mechanical keyboard. I'm going with brown switches because I want some tactile feedback but can't afford to wake everyone in the house up.

What do you guys think about the Ducky One TKL for $99? Cherry MX Brown

Or is that too expensive / too much of a risk for a first time user
>>
>>61859263
Filco keyboards are made by costar so if you don't find the one you want you can always buy a rebranded one and get the same build quality
https://deskthority.net/wiki/Costar
>>
>>61859516
>Browns
Nice b8 m8, and no 80-100 bucks is the price for a mid range keyboard.
>>
>>61859263
Correct!
>>
>>61859530
>browns apparently suck

What do you suggest? I'd like blue (I type, don't game) but blues are apparently the loudest
>>
>>61859516
Cherry MX browns are the worst MX switch. Get MX clears or Gateron browns

>>61859544
just get o rings on your old keyboard
>>
>>61859544
Switches don't matter for gaming, reds and browns are just marketed as gaming switches. I use Gateron blues and use them for gaming. Also how loud do you think blues are? They aren't going to wake anyone up unless they're sleeping right next to you.

>>61859594

I don't know how loud blues are, I only read that they're generally the loudest. If I can use o-rings I'll just get the E-Element Z-88 for $45 on Amazon and put o rings on it
>>
Slightly off topic, but can anyone recommend a game/program for learning how to 10 finger type correctly?
>>
>>61859613
O-rings don't stop the clicking they only help with bottoming out, so they don't really do anything for blue switches.

>>61859633
keybr
>>
>>61859648
>keybr
Looks good, thanks
>>
>>61859648
I just read about 50 amazon reviews of people saying the sound of their blue switches was greatly reduced by using .4mm o rings. Maybe they're all lying
>>
>>61858895
That price seems reasonable.

What I was looking for is something like the Varmilo VA109M. I'll tell you more: I'd love to buy that keyboard. However buying that from caps-unlocked would cost me a small fortune: 116£ of keyboard plus 20£ shipping, 136£ equals to 148€. Then I'd have to pay 22%VAT and 5.5€ custom fee since it ships from China. In the end that keyboard would cost me 186€, which is way too much for me even though that keyboard ticks all the boxes, and I'm not even considering the fact it would take more a month or more to arrive at my doorstep.
I thought that by buying the parts separately I could keep costs down to the point I could afford something that isn't sold by Amazon in the gamer stuff section.

When getting o-rings was a good idea? (Especially on switches designed to click)

What would you want o-rings for? To get some of that wonderful rubber dome feel back? Just learn to type without bottoming-out. Browns aren't exhausting to press and they still offer that little bump that helps you learn how to type without mashing the key to the bottom.
>>
>>61859633
Virtual keyboard (shows keypresses) or an image of your layout (takes least space)
>>
>>61859683
Like I said it only helps with bottoming out which if you do anyway it's going to happen on all switches and they're all going to be loud. You can't silence the click of a blue switch with o-rings,they only help with bottoming out.
>>
>>61858585
Is this the halo build?
>>
What's the most silent cherry and non-cherry switch?
>>
>>61859704
What's the point when the are too light and you bottom out anyway. Also o rings don't affect the clicky noise or actuation mechanism at all. They just dampen the down stoke.
>>
>>61859683
Don't listen to that retard. The sound of bottoming out is louder then the actuating mechanism of the switch. O rings most definitely make a difference
>>
>>61859686
You know that keyboard is literally a rebranded Ducky
>>
>>61859828
Do you think .4mm o rings on a blue switch will affect the feel of the "click"? If I can feel the click like normal but not bottom out as loudly that'd be great
>>
>>61859783
A dampened rubber dome that's been used for at least a year
>>
>>61859810
Wouldn't "heavier" switch cause you to push through the tactile bump with greater force and bottom out easier?
>>
>>61859758
Yup!
>>
>>61859876
O rings don't affect the click at all. Why would you think a piece of rubber that goes on a keycap will some how change the internal mechanisms of the switch?
>>
>>61859686
although it is possible to build a keyboard for cheap, usually costs come out to be about the same as just buying a keyboard outright if not more. especially because the cheapest parts usually come from China and you can't buy from there. in addition, cheap builds usually have the 60percent form factor like the GH60 mentioned by >>61858654 because there's a huge variety of parts for 60percent keyboards. that said,

i don't think you can find a PCB for 105key keyboard so you would probably have to handwire or make your own PCB.

you will need a plate cut from somewhere, and probably the case done that way as well.

gateron switches are cheap but if you're the italian guy, you'll be looking at really expensive keycaps (unless you're fine with blanks or the wrong legends)
>>
>>61859887
no
t. mx super clears
>>
>>61859895
>Why would you think that

Because I'm new to mechs and don't fully understand the mechanism yet, since I've never even handled one much less owned.
>>
>>61859686
if you have the money you could build your self a really nice custom keyboard
Here is a full size PCB

and here is a case

>>
>>61859912
Just go to microcenter and type on the different keyboards, they even carry topre. Or you can get a switch tester from amazon, then return it. You have no excuses
>>
>>61859932
i thought people weren't ordering from GON anymore
>>
>>61859845
>You know that keyboard is literally a rebranded Ducky
No. What does this imply?

>>61859906
>but if you're the italian guy, you'll be looking at really expensive keycaps
Yep, that's me (damn I'm so easily spottable). I was ready to give up and buy the MasterKeys Pro M, but having tried brown switches really fucked my plans royally. As you can see I'm still looking for a solution, and assembling my own keyboard just evaporated from the list. At this point I'll probably bite the bullet for the time it takes to raise the money for something like that Varmilo.

Seeking a mechanical keyboard to satisfy my preferences has proven difficult.

Full size 104 key
Cherry MX Red switches
Classic key markings (numbers on the bottom, shifted symbols on the top)
Numpad with numbers and arithmetic symbols only, no redundant Home/End/PgUp etc.

The most suitable is the custom layout I chose at wasdkeyboards.com (pic related)
I understand that the cursor movement markings on the numpad are traditional, but perhaps those 10 keys could be replaced with custom caps?

The price ($320 AUD) seems extravagant however, might there be a cheaper alternative?

I would be grateful for your advice or a hint to point me in the right direction.

Depends on the spring's design. A weighting at a specific position in the travel doesn't tell you everything about the spring's compression characteristics throughout its entire travel.
>>
>>61860086
lol with that price point you can get a custom korean keyboard that has way better build quality. since you're an aussie you're choices are very limited. You could by a cheap keyboard, then replace the keycaps with something like
