If you want help:
>Assemble your parts list
https://pcpartpicker.com/
>State the budget for your build (and country if not the USA)
>List games/software you use often, as well as your monitor resolution + refresh rate
>Clarify your goal for build improvements: lower price or improved specs?
How to assemble a PC, select components & more (kind of outdated)
https://wiki.installgentoo.com/index.php?title=Build_a_PC

CPUs:
No i5 unless discounted
>R3 1200 - Budget builds (<$500)
>R3 1300x - Good stop-gap between the 1500x and the 1200, only get a 1400 if you absolutely need multithreading
>R5 1500x - Good but up to 1600 if you can
>R5 1600 - Best value for higher fps gaming / mixed usage; 1600x if you want higher stock clocks
>i7 7700k - Only for 144hz
>R7/Used Xeon/Threadripper - Compute/Multitask/VM/mixed use; Not for just gaming

GPUs:
Coin miners have driven price up and stock down, waiting to buy a GPU might be wiser
>Integrated CPU Graphics - Desktop stuff and very light games
>GTX 1050(Ti) - Lower end budget cards, drop settings on newer games, RX560 beaten by both
>RX570 - 1080p@60~hz maxed, running most maxed older games at 100~Hz
>RX580 and GTX1060 6GB - 1080p@80hz maxed, 1440p@60hz at lower settings; RX580 better in newer games
>GTX 1070 - 1080p@130hz /1440p@60hz at high
>GTX 1080 - 1080p@144hz / 1440p@60hz maxed, 4k@60hz in a few games; Probably the highest end card you need for 1080p/1440p
>GTX 1080Ti - 1440p@144hz and 4k@60hz maxed/high in many games

RAM:
>Check your Mobo QVL before buying any RAM
>Ryzen CPUs benefits a lot from high speed RAM

General:
ALWAYS LOOK AT PRODUCT REVIEWS!
Always consider an SSD. Try buying a large SSD for what you'd pay for your SSD+HDD combined, and add a HDD later
NVMe SSDs aren't for a faster OS boot, they're for productivity/scratch disk/VMs. NVMe and M.2 are not the same thing, M.2 is a form factor.
The Ryzen lineup comes with surprisingly good stock coolers. consider using them over any <$30 cooler.
>>
Noctua dude here from previous thread, any tips before I take this cpu cooler off again to reapply this paste?

This is gonna be a pain in the ass because my motherboard is already in the case
>>
Is there any difference in performance or thermals between the ITX and non-ITX models of the RX560? The MSI RX560 ITX 4GB is way cheaper than the non ITX models at my local store

when the fuck is this mining craze going to die down?
should I just start mining with this instead of gaming?
>>
>>61844823
Sell it and upgrade to something like a 1070
>>
When is Vega launching? I don't ask because I want one...I actually want a 1080ti but I'd rather not spend $750 for a decent one if prices are going to drop even slightly.
>>
>>61844823
>mining instead of gaming
>not mining to get a discount/free 480 or similar
been mining overnight on my amd gpu since 2012, every one of them has paid for themselves, I seriously dont get the problem. I get that 580s are like 300 bucks now, but realistically mining 12 hours a day you'll make 30 a month at current prices, at which point in 3 months the card is back down to the price it "should be"
as for when it will be over, expect ethereum switching to POS to shake off quite a bit of the mining craze, too much new blood that gets scared too easily

Asus PRIME B350M-K
Gskill DDR4 RipjawsV PC21300 16GB (2x8GB) Dual Channel F4-2666C15D-16GVB

Any other recommendation for motherboard or Asus is good enough?
Currently I got an i3 and I got sick with this CPU always stuttering when I gaming and playing youtube/browsing in the background.
>>
>>61845233
Save the money and get a 1600. i3 to a 1200 while an upgrade isn't worth buying a new motherboard and ram for.

Should i get NVME M.2 ssd or sata ssd?
And is this a good build?
Answer.
>>

anus = asus
asscrack = asrock
don't fall for the brand name meme, there are good mobos for all 4 companies, you just got to be careful and read reviews for problems
>>

All of these three are in my price range, any good recommendation?
I want to hear /g/ opinion on them.

Asus PRIME B350M-K
MSI B350M PRO-VDH
ASRock AB350 Pro 4
>>
>>61845423
NVME is like AIO cooling, just for looks and with a small budget they aren't worth it, get a sata SSD. I assume you own 960 as otherwise that would be retarded and I'd suggest you get 1060. You can drop down to a B350 board. PSU is fine.

I was comparing my i5 2500K to newer setups and it looks like I wont get a huge jump in performance. I have a GTX 960 that would carry over if i did upgrade and I would use 16 GB of ram like i currently use. But the cost seems just not worth it going to a i5 7500 or Ryzen 5 1500X

Last time I looked at upgrading right when the 1080 Launched I just doubled my ram and got the 960.
>>
>>61845591
the upgrade makes sense if you grab a 1600

I'm going to hybridize a capacitor with a shotgun shell and call it a "crypto mining high stress super capacitor" and sell boards with them soldered in.

So i want to build a dual LGA 771 thing for the lols
mobo, 32gb of ram, dual xeons, coolers all cost like 120$ total, i already have a case that an EATX board should fit in, some drives, fans and a GPU

so all i need now is a power supply
but i need one with a 24 pin, a 4 pin and an 8 pin CPU power, as the board needs all 3 of those

any suggestions? looking for 1000w or greater, used server PSU's optimally
>>
>>61845627

why are you wasting my time with a 5400 rpm HD in CurrentYear() ?

So, I know this isn't exactly the right thread for this, but its adjacent to the topic at hand and I don't really think it deserves its own thread. Currently I have one of those Entry level Acer 1440p 27in monitors. I'm kinda trying to find a Freesync panel for Vega and I found a AOC one that is under $400, which has all the features I want, but is smaller. Would it still be worth it to upgrade? Everything else is better than my current monitor.
>>
>>61845672
Check the reviews for the monitor?
Sure it could be better but since you want freesync, make sure the freesync is properly implemented.
>>
So my power supply came with a fuck ton of cables but my case has a bunch of cables tied up in the back.

Before I start this shit does anyone have any idea what the difference is? Are they extenders for the power supply's cables or something?

Fractal r5 is the case
>>
>>61845539
I am using it temporarily because of bitshitcoin mining. And It still performs better than the 1050.
>>61845662
I had a 7200rbm hdd but a lot of other anons in pervious threads suggested me to get a 5400rbm as they are less loud and the performance difference isn't big

Don't buy a case with a window if you are going to use the ugliest components.

I barely play more than 2 games on my current PC, and I mostly use my PC for work now. With this in mind,I'm thinking about buying a 500gb NVMe (960 Pro) and pairing it with some hard drives I currently have for mass storage. Then I'll upgrade to larger SSDs at a future date. I'm also building a NAS sometime before the end of the year.
How does this sound?

>NVMe for OS, dedicate 100gb for scratch disk, remaining space for some programs
>HDD and NAS for mass storage
>>
>>61846043
NVMe is a meme

>>
>>61844664
Why isn't the 1070 labelled as good for 1440p144hz monitors? You won't be hitting 144hz consistently across all modern games but it's still worth the purchase if possible based on my experience with my friends 6700k and gtx 1070 build with a rog swift pg278q. He gets 60-80 fps in most demanding AAA titles and can hit over 120 fps in other less demanding games or shooters like bf1 or overwatch.

I think that should be included there as it's still a viable option.
>>
>>61846222
1070 are overpriced currently due to mining. Reminder that Nvidia has slashed their MSRP to 350 dollars. Try finding a 1070 for 350 dollars in the current market.
>>
https://pcpartpicker.com/user/LaughingGrass/saved/xKnbvK

hey guys, I'm on around a 1k USD budget here. Critique my build?

I'm using this for autoCAD, Adobe PS/AE/CC/I, Unity, and Blender work. Just keeping that in mind. Ryzen absolutely over Intel, but I'm just making sure if there are anything else I need to change or add. I'm not too sure about the 1060, but I heard it's fairly decent for what I'm going to use it for anyways.

Not sure about windows 10, I like windows 8 personally, but everyone's been putting win10 on their newer builds despite how much I despise the updates and (spyware?) that people say there is.

I know I haven't chose a case yet, you can recommend me a good one if you want!
>>
>>61846272
1700 comes with its own cooler. No need to get a 212. 1600 is good enough imo. Get 2 sticks of RAM over 1. So 2x4 instead of 1x8.
>>
Ok maybe 6 years later i might upgrade. does this sound bad? its dumb with all the RBG I know

Ryzen 5 1600X
Gigbyte GA-AB350-Gameing 3
Samsung 850 EVO M.2 250GB SSD
G.Skill TridentZ RGB DDR4 2400 4X8GB=32GB
GTX 960

>**adding another question**
Is my mobo good for all the powerful stuff I'm adding in? A friend of mines is saying that if I'm using that hq ryzen and gpu sht I'd best be using around a 100$+ or so mobo because of something to do with the VRM or voltage handling. Advice? Thanks
>>
>>61846298
If you are getting the 1600X you need a cpu cooler.
>>
>>61846299
No he is a fucking moron. Only get expensive motherboard if you are using the extra features that those motherboards come with. There are quality VRM without having to overspend.
>>
>>61846272
>300$ cpu
>The cheapest mobo you found
>Sub 30$ cooler over the stock cooler
>1×8 2400mhz ram

>>
>>61846236
I'm talking about in general. The 1080 shouldn't be the baseline for 1440p144hz gaming which the OP implies. The 1070 is a good contender for that experience and when prices aren't fucked, should be the better value option for people who want that 60+ fps experience.
>>
>>61846318
Why? I won't be overclocking. Have I messed up and should drop the "x". I have to assume AMD ships an appropriate cooler.
>>
>>61846385
The benchmark when 1440p144hz is being mentioned is being able to play games 1-2 years old. 1070 can do 144hz in "competitive" games but falls when playing AAA games of recent years.
>>
>>61846403
It still manages 60+ fps in demanding games maxed out pretty consistently. I just watched this vid and even demanding games like rottr average between 60 and 80 fps which would still benefit from high refresh monitors

https://youtu.be/d32eVixz2h0

This is with a ryzen as well. Higher fps can be achieved with a 7700k if some one really wanted that maximum fps experience. The whole package would still be cheaper than having a 1080.
>>
>>61846401
Above 1300, all Ryzen with X ship without the cooler.

I've made a tactical decision. Any future monitor purchases will be made through Walmart.

Walmart offers an array of 22" 1080p monitors for under $100. By my experience and logic, I have a better chance of a satisfactory outcome than fishing for more expensive monitors and waiting for them to ship.

Also, most of these Walmart monitors support VESA mounting despite starting as low as $69. There are $300 monitors that don't support VESA mounting.

Built my PC a few weeks ago. Got a 1600X and a RX580 GPU. (Was able to grab one for a reasonable price, thankfully.) Having a slight problem with the 1600X and I figure this is probably the best thread to ask. For some reason, even when maxing my processor (Granted this has only happened when I've intentionally tried to max it out), my CPU doesn't seem to enter Boost Mode. Ive tried all 3 power settings, but I am using Windows 7 which might be the problem. Motherboard is a AB350 Gaming by Gigabyte.

Any mid/full tower that supports a 360mm/420mm radiator would work. Do you want to do push/pull? If so make sure it has the room for that.

Two examples: Phanteks Enthoo Pro or Enthoo Luxe.

PSU depends on how far you will OC. At stock a 700W PSU would be enough, for OCing I would just get a 1000W and be done with it. It's overkill but it'll run quietly.

Tim @ OC3D pulled over 600W through a X399 board without a GPU load with an AIO cooler so if you really wanted to do that you still could with a 1000W PSU, not to mention you can also pull 300W from the titan with a higher power target. You would know this if only you did research :^).

>>61847786
1000W is fine for a high end system. Yes it's overkill but that's fine and you won't really need to worry about power if you want to add additional GPUs or whatever else.

Kek, sounds appealing. Someone recommended this brand yesterday. Might go for this then desu.

>>61847859
Depends on your usage really. If you're literally just gaming at 1080p@60hz then it doesn't really matter. If you really want to hit 144fps+ at 1080p then the 7700K is the best choice right now (although Coffee Lake is coming soon so I would wait for that reveal). For pretty much any other case I think a Ryzen 7 would be better.
>>
>>61847984

Ok, so I should be safe at around 700 watts, but could go overkill at around 1000 but at least it would leave me a lot of room to add gpus etc later.

Depends on the workload. It by no means doubles the performance(except maybe with IBM's 8-way SMT), but AMD's version of SMT appears to be similar to Hyperthreading performance-wise, so about 30% improvement compared to no SMT under good conditions.

Get faster RAM, 2666MHz should be the minimum if you're buying Ryzen, and 3000MHz is preferable(but make sure it's on the QVL for the motherboard).

Consider dropping the SSD to EVO 850 or SU 800 or something similar(which should be a fair bit cheaper for the same capacity), NVMe SSDs are a meme and don't offer any benefits over SATA in normal use.

I was looking into a liquid cooling system on my next PC, but I've never assembled one before. Is there a recommended list of parts to use? I mainly need a pump to move fluid, the rest of things I have.

Also, M.2 slots for storage, how well do they work? Would I be better off instead just buying 4 256GB SSDs and running them as a RAID 0 for speed/space vs a single high speed 1 TB M.2 SSD, or would most motherboards bottleneck trying to write to four drives all at once? Do M.2 based drives have any sort of software issues that make them preform more erratically than SATA SSDs?

So as it stands, my 500GB SSD is no longer cutting it when single games are as large as 120GB. I intend to install games on this HDD that aren't impacted by low disk speed (dark souls, multiplayer games)

Am I making a mistake in buying this over say, a standard mechanical? I have 2 x 1TB 7,200rpm disks as is. Would them in RAID 0 be a better option?
>>
>>61850314
Don't. Hybrid drive's only purpose is to appeal to poorfag laptop buyers
>>
>>61850336
I see. So would raid 0 on 2x1TB 7,200rpm drives help with load times at all? I know raid 0 can crash and burn taking all the data with it, but their purpose would be for nothing more than dedicated game install space.

Basically I would keep any open world game on the SSD to avoid hitching while keeping multiplayer stuff on the mechanical because game lobbies only load as fast as the slowest player anyway to start a match.
>>
So I bought an NH D15 and while it fits in my case it's making cabling a fucking nightmare, I basically have to shrink my hand to fit it in the fucking gaps to plug in shit like the CPU, any advice? Board is a Gigabyte b350 gaming.
>>
What's a good low profile fan for the Cooler master 130 ITX case? The fan I had lying around and was planning to use is way too tall, also it was slightly wider than 120mm so it had issues with RAM clearance.
>>
>>61850361
>I see. So would raid 0 on 2x1TB 7,200rpm drives help with load times at all?
There's some overhead, so obviously it won't be quite twice as fast, but it will be faster, yes.

Noob here, been researching for only about a week after recently coming into a couple grand and finally want to build, but every site says to wait on it due to gpu prices.

Is it really that serious? Are we talking saving <$100 or more like 250+ if I wait? Budget is 1500 max if that helps

>>
>>61850594
GPU prices are all inflated because of crypto-currency miners. Aka faggots. In turn, Nvidia cards are over-priced because lack of any other option due to AMD always being sold out. However, at $1500 price tag, you could easily afford a good non TI gtx 1080. Depends on what your use case is. And does that $1500 include the cost of a monitor?
>>
>>61850375
I've always found that installing ny D14 egen the mobo is already installed is not at all hard so maybe try dismounting the cooler?
>>
>>61850167
The "rest of the things" are easy to find with a little research: a copper block that properly fits the components and provides good contact, piping and a fluid with high heat transfer, and a radiator/fan combo that can properly cool the fluid. The pump, however, I know much less about, which is why I'm asking the audience on that topic. I would at least like some details on what I should look for on a coolant pump in a device if not a recommendation.

Running a 4790k and 16gb of DDR3 Ram, 2Gb RX270 Card, Wondering if I need to upgrade anything soon and if anything Wanting to mostly upgrade the graphics card, what would be a decent upgrade for me? Hey, poor east euro here. I want to upgrade my CPU to FX-6300 for which I will also need an AM3+ socket motherboard. Can I just go with ASUS M5A78L (which is probably the cheapest AM3+ socket MB I can find) or should I go for something more expensive? I only have one midrange GPU and 1TB HDD
>>
>>61850906
How much money would the upgrade cost you, total, compared to something like a cheap H110 MOBO and a g4560?
>>
>>61850832
Then don't worry. The cards biggest hit by the inflation are the gtx 1060s and 1070s seeing as they're "mid-range".

At a $1500 price point, don't go with less than a gtx 1080. A 1080ti would be a sound investment as well if you intend to keep your PC for a while. 11GB of vram and more than capable at even 4k. Only downside is it's price point. $750-ish.
>>
>>61850827

If you buy a 1060 6GB then you'd be set for a couple more years
>>
>>61850918
110 euros for both, which seems really reasonable to me. The 6300 has like 55 euro discount for a limited time, I need to decide today
>>
>>61850962
Well, although I'd generally recommend staying away from AM3+, that's a pretty good deal. I'm not too sure about that specific motherboard, but apparently ASUS boards are generally pretty good.
>>
How future proof is a 1070 compared to a 1080?
>>
>>61851029
thanks bro. Its not like I need to play games on 4k 1080p or anything. Medium high settings on witcher or TW are enough for me
>>
>>61851064
Performance wise, a 1070 is essentially a gtx 980ti with 8GB ram as opposed to 6. You'll Excel at 1080p and 1440p for years without an issue. Up to you if you want to spend $400 vs $500 for a 1070 vs 1080.
>>
>>61851116
O.K, good to know, brand-wise are there any issues with cards made by any specific manufacturer, ASUS for example
>>
>>61850013
Yeah, drop the 1600x for the 1600.

The cooler that comes with the 1600 is probably better than the one you picked. Either get a better >$35 cooler or stick to the stock one, which is pretty good by itself.
>>
>>61851150
Asus is ok. However if you're looking to hold onto a quality card for a while, EVGA is the go to brand of choice when buying Nvidia. Been buying them since the gtx 4xx series and never had a dead card or issue. And customer service is good.

Asus is fine if the price difference is large. I personally stay away from all gigabyte products.

Is it finally time to upgrade? I need MOAR RAM POWER (64GB DDR4 at least) but I want to stick with an SFF PC for portability. Is AMD Threadripper the one to go for?

I haven't upgraded this thing for years and years now :(
>>
>>61851423
Yeah, what those other guys are saying. That CPU is a big no-no. Plus I'd prefer you didn't give Intel money. Giving Intel money is literally funding a criminal organization
>>

Can I get some rates or hate? Main use will be gaming. New to the building game so any feedback would be appreciated. I can flex an additional $250 if the difference would be worth it.
>>
>>61851719
If got nothing to say. If I had the money myself I'd be doing the exact same upgrade to my pc. Have fun
>>
>>61851690
No. Threadripper is E-ATX and ATX only currently although there may matx boards available in the future. Your best bet is Ryzen on an it board, but even then you're limited to 32GB ram total (16GB per module).

Why do you need the cores and ram?
>>
>>61851230
Go to /sqt/ for one. Also if you visit your motherboard manufacturers website they'll tell you what the beep means.

Be sure to get proper cooling for the CPU. NH-D15 is commonly recommended for top of the line air cooling. Though installing those big towers can be annoying.

>I remember there used to be quad-channel LGA2011 mini-ITX boards, so there isn't anything like that recent?
Threadripper just came out. There probably will be mITX boards for it, but that might take a while.

>I remember there used to be quad-channel LGA2011 mini-ITX boards, so there isn't anything like that recent?

>I do a lot of media and content creation on the go and laptops are just not reliably fast enough for me (at a reasonable cost

mITX boards have always only been 2 ram slots except for weird server motherboards. And as it is, an mITX seems unlikely for Threadripper simply because of socket size. However, if you were to get an itx board, ryzen-1800X, and dual 16GB modules, you'd be essentially doubling your current performance as it is all while maintaining your SFF platform.

If you absolutely need what Threadripper offers you'll have to go full ATX. Then you can run 32 threads of fury and 128GB RAM. I still recommend the first option though.
>>
>>61851855
There's barely any ITX for Ryzen so I'm not holding my breathe for Threadripper getting one.
>>
>>61851867
SteelSeries Kana Black V2, I wouldn't recommend it for serious gaming. It has a little bit of noticeable latency.
>>
>>61850594
Cards at the price range of $200 have rocketed to <$500.

>Damn, okay the latest I've seen is this ASRock X299E-ITX/ac. I really want multi-threaded performance with the memory to back it up....

Well for one, X299 is a bad joke. Terrible performance and terrible price. Two, those ram slots are SO-DIMM. Laptop ram. You'll be paying out the nose for good 16GB ddr4 SO-DIMM modules. Then there is the fact that SFF is tight on space, and X299 is NOT known for running cool. At all.
>>
>>61851947
So it seems like waiting for mini-ITX Threadripper is the only suitable solution for me :(
>>
>>61851974
Well like I said, you could always go itx X370 and Ryzen 1800X.

Do you currently NEED the 16c/32t and 64GB ram of Threadripper? Or just for overkill purposes? Because 8c/16t and 32GB of ram is literally double your current build.

I've assembled my Ryzen 1700 PC and it boots into BIOS and all (after I remembered to plug in CPU cable). However, the idle temp it shows in BIOS seems really high, it climbed up to 55C and stays here. Now, it's pretty damn hot in my room (~27 degrees) and I might've fucked up thermal paste application (I removed the stock paste and replaced it with MX-4 but that didn't go smoothly at all, I smudged it all over pins and had to go and by some alcohol to clean it up). I also damaged the soft surface of the cooler a bit when installing it for the first time, but that's what paste is for, right?

The only Intel CPU worth buying is the 7700k, and only if you're goinig for 144 fps gaming.
Beyond that, the best bang for buck CPU for gaming at the moment is the AMD Ryzen 5 1600.
>But the Intel
The i5 7600k hits its limit in modern games and although it has higher peak fps (which you can only take advantage of if you have a 120+ Hz monitor), it also has lower lows because the CPU utilization is so damned high. By contrast, the 1600 mas maybe 5-10 fps lower than the i5, but is much more stable and provides a smoother experience.

you mean those that can overclock well? yeah 1080ti seems to be a good idea.
also even if new cards come out soon don't beat yourself over it. there's always something new on the horizon.

My own ram was plugged in fine for like 2 years. Then one day my computer didn't want to start. Kind of a boot loop. Alls I did was move the ram into the other slot and it was fine. Not sure what I did cause both slots and ram work perfectly fine. But the computer boots fine now

It doesn't sound like you've broken something. Try a few things or swallow your pride and have a computer shop check it out

no.
That said, the 1700 is better at streaming than the 1600, but even the 1600 is better than the 7700k at streaming.

Upgraded my CPU, Motherboard, and RAM. Enjoying the results so far. Had an FX-8350, old DDR3, and a pretty low end motherboard prior.

Thanks /pcbg/
