Who else is blind as fuck from staring at the computer screen all day?

-9.50 and -7.50 diopter prescription here, feels fucking bad.

>pic related, regular glasses
>also have a set of computer glasses and prescription sunglasses
>>
>>61831961
I've been staring at computer screens for 6-12 hours a day for twenty years and my vision is fine
>>
-4 here, 28yo. By the time I'm fifty I'll have to have them put in an artificial lenses. :(
>>
>>61831961
Deteriorating vision by staring at a computer screen or TV is a myth. It doesn't harm your eyes in any way whatsoever. You're just getting old but you're making excuses because you're in denial about your old ass age.
>>
>>61832090
I love your totally reputed trustworthy source(s). According to you when I was 10 years old with -7 on both eyes I was actually 92 years old?
>>
>>61831961
-4 right and something about -4.25 on left, but my glasses is -4 anyway. Fucking 15" crt killed my eyes in 2-3 years, when it went from -1 that i had before i had pc to -3. It's been more than 10 years since i switched to lcd screens and i only went from -3 to -4.

It feels like it got quite a bit worse since then though.

Still, staring at screens all day shouldn't permanently damage your eyesight at all.

That's either you having a stroke or simple eye fatigue. Look away from the screen more often, and make sure that your room is well lit.

Only person in my family without glasses. Used to be perfect 20 20 but I think being high for 6 years straight reduced that. Still don't need glasses.
>>
>>61832478
You know your vision is fucked when you break ± 6 diopters and you can't get glasses at the store anymore, you have to pick frames and bring your prescription and then come back in 1-2 weeks when your lenses come from the lab.

Also, that correlates with them being fucking expensive.

>>
>>61832090
It isn't.
I myself am slowly getting short sighted because of staring at close screens for a long time.
Short term it doesn't really matter but if you use computers a lot your eyes get used to focusing short distanced objects and you lose the ability to focus on far distanced objects.
>>
>>61831961
ITT people that believe looking at a screen can physically change the shape of your eyeball.
>>
>>61832090
Yeah it fucking is. It's not because of some magical radiation, sure, but looking at something close to you constantly will after a couple of years permanently reshape your eyeballs, giving you short-sight. That's why is important to refocus your eyes from time to time or just look at something far away, just to avoid it. Have been doing this for over 15 years and I still don't have to wear glasses.

Only if you buy special snowflake horseshit from a place that knows they have you cucked on vision insurance.

I got two pairs for $160 total, no insurance at all, and have like a 7.5 nearsighted on both eyes.

The prescription sunglasses were like 120 (i opted for polarization and mirror finish and shit) and the indoor ones were like $40

If your prescription is single vision (no NV ADD on the prescription), the correction is within +/- 2 diopters (the first number in the prescription) and you don't have bad astigmatism (second number is within +/- 1) just order them online from a place like Zenni Optical or Warby parker, it's boatloads cheaper.

If it's more get the glasses in person and check what's considered in network for any vision coverage you might have.

Zenni et al claim to be able to cut progressive lenses (basically trifocals without the lines) but then fail to measure the segment height (height from bottom of frame to where the progressive part starts), which basically means they halfass it.

>>61833177
Zenni won't cut sunglasses above -6 diopters. They will cut regular lenses with a tint above that, but not proper polarized sunglasses lenses. The strength of my prescription on the left eye (-9.5 diopters) requires the use of 1.74 ultra high index plastic.

You also don't want no name lenses in progressive lenses because the areas where the vision is not enhanced (blurry) are far larger in the off brands then the good ones. Pic related.

>>
>>61832623
My mom had 12 diopters and had to design special glasses so they fit in normal frames. It cost pretty much what you quoted.

She did laser surgery on one eye since.

I'm lucky, I only have 2 diopter and I'm short sighted. But I got it before computers were a thing, and it had not become worse at all for the past 22 years. It's still annoying, everything beyond my arms reach is blurred and unreadable, but it could have been so much worse.

I'm not sold on laser surgery being safe on the long term. And I'm too used to glasses by now.
>>
>>61832912
>I myself am slowly getting short sighted because of staring at close screens for a long time.

I've been staring at monitors for the majority of a day for the past 25 years and my eyes have not become any worse. Cartoons and video games first (on a big ass crt tv), then computers (c64 and PC), then computers (lcd).

Any time it feels like my sight became worse, and I go to test it, it turns out that my old glasses were just too scratched/dirty.

I imagine it is different for everyone though.
>>

They recently sent me polarized with a mirror finish at -7.5

I'll cede your points about progressive and bifocals, but I don't use bifocals.

Don't be so fucking dim, people get short sighted from astigmatism not staring at computer screens. If any of you have glasses and didn't listen to your fucking optometrist then ask them next time you're in. Screens can cause strain related issues like aching and headaches but the actual deterioration of your eye sight is caused by how you eye ball and lenses change shape over time.

Don't believe everything your parents told you when you were younger, staring at a TV screen all day did not cause your eye sight to deteriorate. It's simply an issue of genetics and how your eyes change shape

Zenni won't tint 1.74 ultra high index lenses. With the -9.50 frames, in larger glasses with larger lenses (generally a desirable quality in sunglasses), 1.67 index plastic won't fit.

Which is a shame, because I wanted to get a spare single vision (distance) pair of outdoor sunglasses from Zenni. But they can't accommodate my prescription.

Myopia has literally 0 relation to close work. LITERALLY 0. unless like you're 50+ in which case you shouldn't be here and in which case you will get hypermetropia as well.

>>
>>61833423
>-9.50 frames
Meant -9.50 diopter lens. But it limits the frame selection too. I can't get wrap around sunglasses ever, and I've even picked out regular frames at retail before and I've had to go back in to select a different frame because the lab said they couldn't cut the lenses to spec and have them pass quality control (e.g. that the prescription after cutting the lens was a match and the lenses were correctly cut.

>>61833444
>Let me guess, Amerifag? You know your medical system is fucked when you can't afford to get personalized prescription glasses and you have to buy them from the grocery store.
I'm American but when you get to stronger prescriptions you have to pay out the ass for ultra high index plastic (among other things) generally. Even Zenni Optical (online shop) won't make glasses with 1.74 high index plastic for less than $100.
>>
>>61833423
Oh yeah. I went with 1.67 in aviators with quite large lenses at a 7.5 and they work just fine, though.
>>
Had PRK about 3 months ago. Healing was kinda slow but now I have like 13/20 vision now. Still a little light sensitive but I use dark mode and flux to keep that in check. Cost was like 3200 bucks out the door and it's worth it to dump the specs.
>>
>>61831961
-10 in each eye with astigmatism to boot

my vision has always been bad and i doubt tv/computer screens had any further effect
>>
>>61833475
Part of the problem is that the cylinder (for astigmatism) also complicates the lens design, resulting in a thicker lens than a lens with the same correction (diopters) but no astigmatism. So my lenses at -7.50 with astigmatism are thicker than yours assuming that your astigmatism is less or you don't have any (second number in your prescription).

I have a pair of Bluetecs, the difference is very noticable, I can stare at screens for days without headaches and I feel like they improve contrast when not at the computer as well.

In theory they work (the yellow lenses) but who knows. $100 sounds expensive with no correction, the gunnars have sold for $40 in the US before (on sale, not general price).

For prescription lenses I would go with Crizal Prevencia but thats a 20% filter factor for "harmful light" without looking like someone peed on your lenses.

I'm at -5 on each eye with -0.25 and -0.5 cylinder. I've considered ordering online, but I don't have my pupil distance since it's never on any prescription, and I don't think I can do it well enough myself.

Lately I've considered ordering some frames from the chinks and having glasses put into them at the local shop. I'll still be paying +-75 euro per glass, but at least I wouldn't be paying out of the ass for the frame.
>>
>>61831961
>computer glasses

>>
>>61833844
I'm not in the US, but where I live, you can buy glasses as you'd buy a pair of jeans. The cheap set "frame + corrective (or not) lenses" costs about $80. For an additional $20 you can get some options, like color for sunglasses, piss filter for computer, thinning the lenses, dual focus for old people... These kind of things. You get to choose between "virgin", "stereotypical child molester" or "wannabe steve jobs" for this price though.
How can the lenses block "harmful lights" (assuming normal transparent glasses don't) without a color taint?

Totally. But I've never had an infection, just some dryness in the morning. DON'T do it unless you have high oxygen-permeability in your lenses.

What I DO have is neovascularization, hence why I've been told to stop and go back to glasses pretty much indefinitely.

do NOT get progressive lenses if you read a lot on your computer. The band of vision is too narrow, and you'll be trying to make fine adjustments all the time, and you will hate it.

You will want a pair of glasses specifically for that intermediate, computer distance, and your eye people will happily get you measured for that. (You could get bifocals, with intermediate/near, and never have to worry about side to side vision changes within your lens, so that might be good too)

Anyone else get a tiny bit annoyed when people ask you why you get such boring/neutral glasses? Maybe I should order online, but I'm afraid my -5 and -0.5 cylinder is too much to get a non-shit pair from online sellers.

Can't speak to zenni but warby is garbage. I bought some sunglasses there and the polarization axis is off by like 50 degrees between the two lenses

Moscot costs more for a reason
>>

I have a pair of fashion forward wire frame egon spengler glasses from Moscot for dress down times and salaryman Oliver Peoples acetate frames for when I have to look like an adult

Best of both worlds, I'm probably going to get some Mykitas later this year to keep up since the Peoples are starting to look dated

22yo, had been staring on the computer monitor and phone screen daily for at least 6 hours, I still have flawless eyesight. Guess I'm just lucky. I've never had a CRT monitor though, just 14" and 21" TVs that I used to watch from quite a distance usually, even when playing on my NES clone.

Can confirm, bad eyes are in our family. At one point my mom's eyes were something silly like -10 or so, though mine luckily have stabilized around -5.
>>
Why hasn't there been a massive culling of people with shit vision? I'm nearsighted and it's just another thing that makes me want to kms. We need to wipe these shit genetics off the face of the earth.
>shitty expensive flimsy glasses frames, arms become floppy over time
>can't see shit in the rain
>lenses constantly getting smudged, small scratches build up over time, bright lights always getting reflected towards eyes
>contacts constantly drying out eyes, vision gets blurry, eyes get tired quickly
>eyes get buggy towards the end of the day, constantly blinking and trying to make contacts comfortable again
>can't sleep in them or take naps, they dry out and glue themselves to eyes
>can't swim with them, have to wear goggles or take them out
>lasik expensive as fuck, eyes still susceptible to becoming weaker
>if you alternate between glasses and contacts, you need two pairs of sunglasses, one prescription + one normal

Do they do both eyes at the same time?
Is recovery hard, painful? How long does full recovery take?
Really tempted to do it since it's only 1,000 USD for one eye (and that's the price for the most expensive type of surgery).
Which type did you choose?

>>
>>61839206
>$2,000 flat
Would have done it already but it's way more expensive than that - 1.5 to 3 times.

https://manhattanlasikcenter.com/how-much-does-lasik-surgery-cost/
>Generally speaking, the cost of LASIK surgery ranges from $1500 to $3000 per eye. This range in pricing is for the most advanced, bladeless method of performing the surgery which incorporates wavefront technology for optimal visual outcomes with the least amount of risk for the patient.
>>
>>61839270
It's the price in Poland (for FemtoLASIK Wavefront).
LASIK is even cheaper.
>>
>>61839270
For some eyes, the simpler, cheaper LASIK systems work just fine. Consider that $6k a budgetary estimate and get your own eyes measured and examined for an actual quote.
>>
>>61839307
It's really easy to sue for malpractice in the United States. Add that to higher wages & cost of living in the New York area, and procedures cost more than they would overseas.

>>61839325
I need to arrange a consult but my doctor told me with the severity of my prescription, if my corneal thickness is a match and all, the best I can expect is 20/20 vision with surgery and the worst that I can expect(if eligible) is a reduction to -3 or -4 diopters. That would greatly increase my choice in lenses/frames, reduce the price, and make it so if my glasses fall off the nightstand I find them without assistance, so it would still be progress.
>>
>>61839362
With the cost of living in NYC 6k USD should be nothing.
>>
>>61839380
I make ~$100K/yr USD pre-tax but pay quite a bit of tax liability on that plus, the cost of living.... $6K is definitely something I can afford plus I can do 6K.

My other fear is something going wrong. Uncle brought over someone he was dating this past week and they told me that after having LASIK she can no longer drive at night due to halos. That would have a HUGE impact on my life, I travel for a living and travel to the airport early on Monday morning and drive home Thursday night. If LASIK fucks up my vision in such a way then I would have to change jobs.
>>
>>61839407
>plus I can do with 6K
Brainfarted hard on that one.

You can do a LOT of things with $6K. Corrected vision is nice but other things might be more urgent priorities. We'll have to see what the estimate post consult is.

All you fags need to learn to read out of focus.
Seriously, it works.

I learned to read out of focus back in my teens because i noticed my eyes were getting considerably worse due to my sudden uptake of reading ALL THE THINGS.

I decided to do something about it.
I did some basic research and came to the very simple conclusion of why it happens: constant focus tones the muscle to that constant shape. Literally increasing muscle size.
Likewise, reading often means you are moving your eyes often. Muscles again. The muscles grow, your eye gets crushed.

All you need to do to trick yourself to look at a target out of focus is look at something far away and move your eyes without refocusing.
Do this repeatedly until it becomes second nature to not focus unless you specifically want to.
Now comes the harder part, learning to read out of focus.
Have fun with that.
Took me 2-3 years of casual learning over various fonts to be able to read most texts out of focus.
Hand-written usually being the exception!
You can barely fucking read that shit WITH proper vision. Fucking Doctors man. Fuck that noise.

Hey this sounds pretty cool, I might try it. I guess you use bigger fonts on your pc? Can't imagine ever reading all that blurry shit.
I can defocus easily with one eye but as soon as both eyes aim at a target they also focus there, that's the part I have to learn I suppose.

Honestly works my man my dude.
My visions back to normal.
Actually I lie, it has only recently gotten bad because I have been doing drawing work the past couple years and I've been lazy as fuck with regards to that.
Fixing that problem. I just need to get used to zooming in when doing detailing.
But before that, it was 20/20. Only took a few years for the muscles to degrade back to base-level.

However, note that this will obviously only work on short-sighted types.
Long-sighted require the opposite. You need to read your little butt off until your eyes are pointing out the back of your head. I believe in you!
Na, I dunno how you could fix long-sighted without using an external device or surgery.
Anything I can think of would be permanently damaging to your retina due to pressure increase. Long-sighted is maddening. I'd just save up for the fucking surgery. I couldn't be like that.

>>61840082
Nope.
I actually have loads of fonts pretty small actually.
After years of experience, I learned to read even smaller texts.

My families visual history is all kinds of fucked though.
Mother requires fonts the size of fucking Mars. Refuses to use glasses. Uses magnifying glass instead. (Or contacts when at work)
Uncles got a fucking submarine window for glasses.
Uncle also has the beetus, mother likely has it.
Both have shit diets. Uncle especially. This motherfucker sleep-SNACKS.
His blood sugar was the worst his doctor had personally seen. He was a new hot snack away from coma.
