Whats the correct way to set up a ubuntu vm on a physical partition instead of container files?

I created the partition without formatting and could select it in the vmware workstation 10 setup wizard.

But the xubuntu setup can't create the filesystem.

>>
>>61730967
Could be read-only. Maybe you need to run VMWare with administrative privileges or something.

By the way, if you're wanting to install it to the disk so that you can dual-boot your host with this Xubuntu installation as well as running it from a virtual machine, that probably won't work if you're installing it to a partition, rather than a whole raw disk, because you would be creating a partition table within a partition table. If you're sufficiently determined, you might be able to make this work with an initramfs and some loop device magic.

If you're wanting to use a whole partition for performance reasons, keep in mind that a preallocated non-fragmented raw disk image file on an NTFS filesystem shouldn't be too much different. I dunno much about VMWare in particular, but with qemu + kvm, one thing you can do is disable cache and use "native" IO, and another thing is to use a paravirtualized block device driver such as virtio-blk, instead of SCSI / IDE / SATA. VMWare probably has an equivalent to this, or maybe even supports VirtIO. The only other main things for performance are setting CPU affinity to pin virtual machine threads to physical CPUs, and using larger memory pages on the host allocated to the guest (on Linux this is called Hugepages, dunno what the Windows equivalent is, if there is one).
>>
>>61730967
If there's an option to launch a terminal during installation try:
mkfs.ext4 /dev/sda1

Or whatever is the partition.
>>
>>61731451
>>61731498

thanks, vmware is in admin mode, otherwise I can't boot the vm after creation anyway.

It seems to stick to the easy-installer. I have to read up on how to disable that, it skips the whole formatting process.

Installing on a whole disk works, but a partition doesn't.

Dualboot is not what I want, I just want to separate it to another disk otherwise it interfers with other I/O instances which tend to lock up my system occasionally and doesn't fragment the whole thing.

I have a feeling that the installer looks for an already existing ext4 filesystem on that partition which I cant create in windows. Might need to do that from a live-usb instead
>>
I currently have a Windows HDD and other HDD all NTFS; if I put in another drive, and put linux on it, when I boot windows (W10), that drive will be invisible, correct?

But when I boot linux, will I see those NTFS drives?
>>
>>61731646
No,it will still show the drive but it cant do anything with it since its not a filesystem it understands.
>>

>>61731646
windows can't see linux, you'd need to open an ext file browser program
linux can see ntfs ~~IF~~ you downloads ntfs shit
>>
>>61731717

I know this is /sqt/, but there's a limit to how stupid a question can be.
>>
>>61731646
You will be able to see the NTFS drives just fine and even mount them and read and write to them from Linux. You can also read and write your Linux filesystems on Windows (though I'd recommend just using read-only) using Paragon ExtFS for Windows.
>>
>>61731676
Windows will show the drive you mean?

By "not do anything with it" you mean the drive wont even be "openable" right? I just want to make sure my windows OS doesnt somehow fuck up things on the linux's HDD.

And the Linux OS will see the NTFS drives??

You can get little thumbsticks in a plastic mount that suction-cup onto your screen to emulate thumbsticks on a controller, but I can't imagine they work very well.

You can very easily plug in a DualShock 3/4, X360 or XBone controller, or one of those NES/SNES USB clones, to your phone using an OTG adapter.

I haven't heard of any ROMs to replace your Android OS on your phone specifically for emulation, though. And getting the case 3D printed wouldn't be the problem, but getting someone to design it for you. It'll likely also need to be printed in parts, at least two, to make the shape be comfortable (overhangs are hard to print), and require gluing, sanding, priming, painting, ... Afterwards. You could start by sifting through the pages of results that come up on www.yeggi.com when you search for LG G3 to see if there's anything remotely like what you want already available, for starters. Otherwise you're gonna have to pay someone to design the whole thing for you and costs are gonna start ramping up.

Consider getting one of those mounts that clip onto a DS3 or DS4 that you can clip the phone into, and a short mini (if DS3) or micro (if DS4) to micro USB OTG cable instead.

thanks anon, and yeah cost isn't a huge concern but obviously I don't want it to be a crazy amount.

pic is what I'm using atm. I've considered getting a few broken ds3 controllers off of craigslist just to see how much they can be modified/stripped down to be able to fit in a more compact space. wish I knew a few engineers who could design the models for free but I'm not that lucky.

Google adsense sent me a letter awhile back saying that I can claim $80 that they owe me or something, but I'm only now able to get around to it. Thing is though, I'm going on vacation tomorrow and the deadline for this is before I get back.

I'm reinstalling my OS's on my new drive, but because it's a laptop, I don't think the drivers will be included.
This is fine for windows, but I don't know how to set it up for Debian. What'd be the easiest way of getting the drivers for this on Debian? They were all automatically there/created when I installed debian on the original drive.
>>
>>61732808
pretty sure everything will still work. Are you upgrading to a new version or just using the same version? It should still recognize your hardware if it's the same version.

If all else fails, just clone the image of your hard drive onto the new one and nothing will be changed.
>>
>>61732837
I'm not sure what version was originally installed. It wasn't that long ago so probably a similar enough version.
Does Debian itself check the hardware like W10 does then? In contrast I installed it on another laptop and it barely had any of the drivers.
>>
>>61732731
Yes. You get an oem version
>>
>>61732858
unless you need proprietary drivers you should be golden, and since you installed debian before with no issues I doubt you'll have issues this time either
>>
>>61732858
Download the latest version, put it on a usb drive and test it out in the live version. The live version will pretty much be what the installed version will be like. I don't know how Debian checks for hardware. I've mostly used Ubuntu so Debian should be pretty similar.

Depends, is it AMD? then yes.
Intel? No, clean your heatsink fan and maybe get ready to repaste.
>>
>>61734933
Considering just the temperature, it's fine. That's especially true if the game is demanding. However you could work on your cooling solution if you want to improve that toward the 80s.

One thing we can't know from temperature alone is something called thermal throttling. Your CPU might be reducing its speed if it thinks that 90 is too high a temperature in order to protect itself. You can run programs like MSI Afterburner in the background while you game to check if that's happening. Push the system hard for a while and then tab out to look at the CPU performance graph. Dips are bad.

Cmon now, there has to be someone here who's used GDB to recover a tc-encrypted HDD before

Fuck

Also this just sprang to my mind, if i managed to get into the recovery console via the win7 setup CD with the HDD hooked up to the system again properly, how likely would a renewed chkdsk /f /r be to resolve these issues (if it even works in the first place that is) so it can get into working order again?

One of my first exposures to Linux was my uncle's comp when I was 11ish

He had it set up so when it booted a question was displayed that you had to answer. If you answerd correctly a second question and then a third would pop up.

How can I change this? I want to make it like extract 3 different folders with same names as zip file. So 3 folders.

I select 3 zip files, right clicked, click "extract to ...", basically it extracts zip file into a folder with same name as zip. But when I select more than one, it extracts 3 zips into same folder. And zips has files like; first .zip: 001.png 002.png. Zip two 001.png 002.png. So it extracts filenames with same name on a single folder. And you know the drill. Pic related.

Didn't get an answer from the last /fglt/ thread, might as well take a shot asking here.

Xfwm with Nvidia is kind of a bitch regarding tearing.

I know
nvidia-settings --assign CurrentMetaMode="nvidia-auto-select +0+0 { ForceFullCompositionPipeline = On }"
is the solution, and I have that in my session rc after a delay, but sometimes it doesn't work and I have to manually enter it into terminal.

Is there a more proper way to configure nvidia-settings-rc it so it always forces the full composition pipeline? Scouring through and experimenting with the settings hadn't helped.

So today I was fortunate enough to come across an old pc case, mobo, PSU and CPU in the recycling of my schools IT department.
Case: Cooler MAster Elite 342 CPU: AMD phenom x3 8400 Mobo: Asrock n68c-s ucc PSU: COOLER MASTER Elite Power RS400-PSARI3-US 400W ATX12V v2.31
I was thinking of harvesting the parts and making my own micro-atx gaming pc. But had really no idea where I should turn to for a CPU, GPU, and ram. I have a set of 2x4GB Kingston Hyper-X Fury sticks on my current pc, but I'm afraid that since it's 2133mhz I'm out of luck for using it.
I'm assuming since It's old architecture I could whip up something cheap, and play some older/ newer titles on it. Thoughts, on GPU, ram, and CPU?
I was looking to play squad.

Holy fuck i just realized i don't even need to retrieve anything TC-related because the TC encryption itself is still seemingly fine (else i wouldn't get to the loading screen after typing in the password). Basically what i need to do is to somehow get into the cmd AFTER the drive has been decrypted/mounted manually so i can access the NTFS file structure again. I think if i purposefully cut off the power during the loading screen (and before the BSOD happens) it should let me chose to boot into the decrypted cmd from where i could then run the chkdsk...

Basically either that or i'm simply mounting it externally via testcrypt or something... Since the latter is still scanning for volumes i think i'm going to try the former method now, maybe it won't give out any BSOD's in safe mode either

I'm not sure what DCSS service you are talking about but resticting what a user can run, and the startup shell is a feature of sshd. You can use the ForceCommand option in sshd to run a binary at login. Put that inside a Match block to make it only apply to one user. You can use the ChrootDirectory to increase security (a little bit). You probably want to use a now system user with no password too.

I drag and dropped my linux iso onto a dvd and my computer refuses to boot from it. Did I have to actually select the "burn to disc" option from the right-click menu?

IDK about windows 10, but in the past you've needed to use a 3rd party ISO burning tool for dvds.
>>
>>61740112
Man, I figured an ISO is an ISO. I won't have any blank DVDs for at least another week due to shipping. I would have just used the burn to disc option but every time I tried the explorer window would just become unresponsive for five minutes.
>>
>>61740166
I don't know what "burn to disk" option you're referring to, but it sounds like it wouldn't have worked either. Why don't you just use a flash drive?

Drive to a place with public wifi. Use a cheap yagi antenna and a high-power external transceiver for maximum range and speed. Decent chance you can pick something up from inside your dorm room.

If you don't care THAT much about quality you can use NetVideoHunter or equivalent to download the stream file off streaming websites like Putlocker and kimcartoon.

I'm a paranoid bastard so I use an old laptop that's never touched my home network or is used for anything other than torrenting.

>>
>>61740466
Just make sure the frequency and CAS timing on the new stick is identical to the old. Alternatively, you could see it as a reason to upgrade to higher capacity.

Is there any way to normalize the volume of a bunch of video files?

Some seasons of TV shows I have are too quiet while others are too loud
>>
>>61740495
That has worked the few times I've gotten such errors in the past.

But this is different. The issue persists. It's not restricted to just one tab. And neither refreshing the tab nor resetting the browser in its entirety works.
Chrome though? No problem.

Not sure the box can take anything other than DDR3 @ 1600mhz. And getting 16gbs of that is like $100. Too rich for my blood considering nothing on God's green Earth should ever need to use 16gbs. And I'll fight people over that. If a game needs 16gbs of RAM, it's because the devs are lazy assholes.

16gbs of RAM is where it becomes strictly science and movie editing territory.
>>
>>61740516
you could extract all the audio tracks, apply replaygain to them, then mux them back into the video files

I am terrified of installing motherboards and CPUs, I've only ever installed like 2 CPUs in my life and I'm worried that I'll break things when I do my next upgrade (planned for early 2019).

Everything else is easy peasy, it's just the CPU that I am nervous to touch. Is there a way I can practice installing CPUs or something? I want to be able to handle these $600+ computer parts with confidence. Thanks /sqt/

I'm going on a summer trip and my PC will be unpowered in a room that hits 25-30 degrees for 13 days. Is there any chance of my SSDs getting fucked and losing data?
>>
>>61742028
No chance, as long as your power cables are physically unplugged out of the power socket on the wall, you will be fine.
Follow the correct procedure for turning off and disconnecting the power.

First, shut down the PC if it is running.
Wait 10 minutes.
Switch the I/O switch on the power supply to 0, you can find the switch near where the PC's power cable plugs into the power supply.
Wait 3-5 more minutes.
You can now safely remove the power cable from your PC.

The waiting times are extreme overestimates, but better safe than sorry. Also follow this procedure in the event of a brownout or storm.

I'm writing a small game in C++ MFC and Open GL, and I'm having a bit of a problem with something. I started to learn C#. I'm now at the stage when jagged arrays are a challenge but I'm making steady progress. What is something that a person should know how to do as a programmer before they can apply to an internship?

Is there something like a list of things you should know or a typical task they give you when you apply to see if you're good?
>>
>>61742294
15 minutes to unplug the PC? Last time I had to unplug it to clean it up and install a new SSD I just turned it off, switched the power supply and unplugged that bitch, no waiting times
>>
>>61742440
Since you're on jagged arrays, I'm gonna assume you're already versed in manipulating matrix-like arrays. If not, I'd suggest going over that, for example as an exercise: Write a function that gets an int array of 5 items, and a matrix of 5*5 int items, and the function has to print messages if either the array matches one of the rows, columns, diagonals, or just appear randomly inside the matrix. Or not at all.
After that, I'd suggest basic search and sort algorithms like bubble sort and binary search as starting points. Then, if you didn't already, learn about strings, string manipulation and other stringy stuff.
Then learn about creating classes. See how you handle those topics for now.
