Phone advice

Looking at
One plus 5
HTC u11
Samsung s8+
Nokia 8
Google pixel xl
iPhone 7+

Going to be using it on Sprint, mostly looking for phone that can hold up to a lot of use, gaming, video, developing. So something fast but also a battery that will last 10 hours with heavy use. Phone i have now last only few hours
>>
>>61664881
Just replace the battery yourself
>>
>>61664881
Me and my supervisor were just discussing that today, all phones are moving to non-removable.
>>
>>61665051

>>
>>61665043
Oneplus 5 won't work with Sprint, Nokia 8 probably won't either. Out of the rest, I'd go with the U11 if you don't mind no headphone jack.
>>
>>61665043
The u11, or S8+ are your best bets. I can endorse the battery life of the s8+ but I don't know about the u11. The lack of TouchWiz on that phone may help in the real world, so you'll have to do more research yourself

Can I ask about tablets here, they're basically the same thing right?

In UK, looking for budget 10 inch tablet for my mother to browse internet, YouTube, video call. Under £200.

Can I go wrong with a cheap Asus? Asus zenpad Z300M?

Is such a cheap tablet actually gonna be usable?

Any other brands I should look at?

Is it ok to ask for tablet advice?

I have an old Nexus 7 second gen that is shitting the bed soon. I also have about $150 dollars in Amazon credit so I might as well get a new one. I was going to get the Nvidia Tablet but that's out everywhere like it's a fucking Wii in 2007.

Any other comparable Android tablets within the $200-$300 price range? I'm looking to see if I could root them so I can install my own shit instead of the bloated crappy 4.4 kit-kat that seems to plague most tablets. so my only criteria is Android and hackable.

Any recommendations? Carrier, or phone!
I'm looking to spend around $350-550.

Things I'd like in order of importance

>+++Battery/USB C
N6 gets like 3 hrs SoT and almost always needs to be charged by the end of the day. Also the micro USB port is SOOOO shit and is about to fail any day now. So USB-C, good battery, quick charging
>++ Performance
Need something that justworks, no crashes, dumb ass bugs, etc. Would be nice to emulate games on it too
>++ Headphone jack
this is standard, fuck you Apple
>+ IP68
never had it except for my work phone (GS7, but it's poorly implemented on it?) but I would really like the peace of mind of having it
>+removable battery
longevity/ability to stick a dumb fucking hueg battery on it (Moto Z play is a special case for this one)
>+ warranty
I don't want to fuck around if my phone's a lemon. Honestly have never had to send any of my phones in for repair but I'd rather be safe than sorry
>~community support/Stock android support
ROM support isn't necessary but a nice incentive to the longevity of the phone imo. Stock android has always been my preference, but I'm open to minimally skinned versions of android also as long as it's tasteful.
>~ Camera
I have a DSLR, I just need something passable for the cell camera for quick pictures. Bonus points if its great, but not my #1 feature by any means.

>LG G6

Not sure what to upgrade to. I'm looking at the Kyocera DuraForce Pro and the Moto Z2 Force, as I'm finally gonna be upgrading to a rather current phone. Don't fucking do it. TouchWiz is still really bad on the GS8, is buggy and Samsung's own development team has not improved either. (Bixby launched almost 4 months after the phone did)
If anything, the G6 checks all of your wants and needs and is way cheaper.
>>
>>61670059
Gotcha. Like I said I have a GS7 for work also so I know where touchwiz is... it's definitely still not optimal. But yeah the whole bixby thing is a turn off

I still don't have a smartphone. I'm not a luddite it's just so goddamn expensive and I'm so goddamn poor. Pictured is my phone, which I've had for over a decade at this point. At this point it's the composite of three of these phones as I replace components and cannibalize batteries.

It's a pay as you go phone that requires $20 USD every five months (so $4 a month) for a finite, but sufficient for my needs, number of minutes.

Is there any data plan in the united states that caters to my poverty level phone budget? I don't need data, wifi is fine. I just want a phone that can make calls and can make use of wifi. Right now I just drag my (equally old) laptop around with me. It's getting old.

Thinking about upgrading my Redmeme note 3 pro special edition to the Mi 5X

Are there any estimates on SOT ?

Also anyone know if the camera will be usable under poor lighting? I miss my nexus 5x :(
>>
>>61673928
The SD625 SoC is very power efficient, Moto G5 Plus has it and gets about 7-9h SoT with a 3000mah battery. The camera should be good as it's nearly the same setup as on the Mi6, though I can't find any accurate information whether the phone has OIS or not like the Mi6 does. I'd wait for more reviews / comparisons on the camera before pulling the trigger on it.

Other options worth considering are ZUK Z2 Pro or Mi5s, which are both around the same price as the Mi5X

Lads I finally got my Z2 Pro and it came with an international ROM or something, play store etc. was preinstalled. I don't have a clue about ROMs or anything, total newfag to smartphones

is it alright to keep this ROM or have the chinks installed spyware? Is QFIL going to brick my phone if I try to install a stock ZUI ROM? Everyone on zukfans is illiterate. I'd keep my current ROM if I'm not going to get my identity stolen
>>

An older relative just got a Moto C plus

Seems the case is very difficult to remove and it appears to have a stray wire or something near the top. i told them to take it back which they did but the guy in the shop apparently said it was part of the receiver.

Sounds like bullshit to me, is the phone defective or is it honestly built with a strange bit of flappy plastic inside the case?

I have a Note 4 which is slowly dying, so I'm looking at getting a new phone. I had a look online, but it's hard to get a good idea of what's available if you aren't into flagships.

Desirable properties:
- cheapish
- big screen
- minimal bloatware or easily rooted with decent ROMs floating around
- not fragile
- fast/smooth for normal day-to-day functions

Things I don't care about:
- gaming capabilities
- sound quality
- meme features like curved screen edges or whatever

I need a cheapish tablet for use in a restaurant kitchen.

The dominant use case will be a web browser to a backoffice site over wifi.

Cheaper is better as it'll probably get broken/dropped by the cooks.

What's the best way to squeeze more life out of my Note 3?

I've had it since just after it launched, I've been really happy with it, and I don't really have any problems with it now, it just seems to be getting a little slow.

I've never rooted or installed a custom ROM, would a custom ROM improve speed and make the phone run more smoothly?

I'm not really a heavy user, just text, calls, web, and social media sometimes. that's why I don't really feel a need to upgrade.

i'm also considering just getting a Note 5, anyone have one? Note 8 is gonna be super expensive so I don't want to get it

My iPod Nano, which I've had for the better part of 9 years, finally died a week ago. I decided to just try and use my Moto G4 as a replacement, but so far absolutely every Android music player I've tried has been absolute ass compared to the iPod interface. I think my biggest gripe is the way the music is always organized. I've tried Google Play Music, BlackPlayer, Phonograph, n7player and PowerAmp. Been disappointed with all of them. Is there a (preferably open source) music player on Android that sort of mimics the iPod interface, or at least doesn't suck?

Sorry I meant mi5s.

>In indoor light, Xiaomi MI5S samples are a little better than that of MI6, whether in noise control or brightness. But they have small gap.

>In night samples, the bigger pixels of Xiaomi MI5S has better advantages, Both improve the night image brightness by enhancing the exposure, but xiaomi mi5s has better light-in advantage, so the noise is less, and the tone is more accurate.

Might require a battery replacement after a couple years but should be fairly future proof. Will stop getting official updates in a month, but you should be able to make do with custom ROMs.

Just shattered the screen on my 3 year old iphone 6, been looking to jump the apple ship for a while, so im using this as an excuse to buy a new phone, Im looking for something that has

>better than average battery life
> No phablet shit 5" is perfect
> good enough hardware to emulate GBA games, maybe one or two DS games
> (mirco) SD card storage
>500 USD or less

I realize that on such a budget I may need to make comprimises but these are the jist of what I want, thanks for any help you can offer me.

P.S. If I buy a carrier unlocked phone is it as simple as taking the sim card out of my iphone 6 and putting it in the new phone?
>>
>>61678113
Why? The ram and processor is better but the speaker, screen size, and software is better on nexus

I've heard miui takes more ram than android, and it seems like it would be buggy or not secure

My Galaxy S7 Edge has a cracked screen. This is the first smartphone with a cracked screen I have ever owned. I called multiple phone fix stores in my area and only one had a replacement screen.

Here's the catch: the replacement screen is meant for black S7 edges and mine is silver. Now, I keep my phone in a case so you can't see the back of it, so this change wouldn't bother me at all, but I want to knoe if this would be a replacement problem. Do you think it will fit fine?
>>
>>61681605
yeah it'll fit fine as long as it's the same model and it's not a black S7 edge plus

>If I buy a carrier unlocked phone is it as simple as taking the sim card out of my iphone 6 and putting it in the new phone?

If you're using a GSM provider such as T-Mobile, AT&T or any Canadian provider it is that simple. If you're on a CDMA provider (Verizon, Sprint, US Cellular) it is much more complicated and annoying to transfer service to a new phone. You also have far fewer options for CDMA compatible phones.

You shouldn't have much trouble finding something that can emulate GBA/DS games, I think even newer lower end devices can do it. Don't quote me on it as I don't emulate, perhaps someone with more experience in this area can tell you. I found an article from 2013 saying that they were getting good performance from a DS emulator on a Nexus 7 (2013), so newer chips should have no problem. Probably a good idea to try to get the best processor you can though, just to be sure.

Your other requirements are easier to fulfill, I would see what is available in your price range and check the GSMArena battery endurance rating for each one. You're probably still going to have to plug it in at the end of the day. I find Android battery life to be less consistent than iOS, probably due to all the Google services tracking your location all the time.

There is an option on the Nokia 6 in the developer settings to allow OEM unlock, but unlocking the bootloader isn't as simple as "fastboot oem unlock". Will likely require an unlocking tool from Nokia, I guess we'll have to see if they allow it.

The OEM ROM being so close to stock Android makes unlocking less necessary, especially if they deliver on fast updates for at least a couple years, but bootloader unlock is crucial for long term viability of the device with custom ROMs.

Tangential question guys, i want to watch reviews of phones and such on youtube but there are so many poo-in-loo channels. yeah click the 3 dots and then click not interested
and then just stop watching them
block their channels too
but keep in mind you're still going to be shilled the popular videos because others in your country are watching them

I would look for something close to stock Android as possible, I switched from an iPhone 6s to a OnePlus 3 and the transition was pretty smooth and nice.

Recently got the OP5 and I'm pretty happy with it too, no SD card though.

How do you deal with google's horrendous quick settings design? The brightness slider is placed at the top, forcing you to use another hand to control it, closing it requires two swipes up to close it. Are there any xposed modules or systemui mods that fixes this (aside from resurrection remix)?

I had a windows phone in 2012 and 2013.
Loved the interface, loved almost everuthing about it, but the lack of app support was notable.
Has the support improved?
At the time I had a nokia 810. A middle range phone. The high end was the 1020 and the 8x.

But the zoom quality is almost identical for the mi5s and the mi6. It's a stupid useless gimmick, a monochrome sensor makes more sense for better low light pics...
