>Users of all levels are welcome to ask questions about GNU/Linux and share their experiences.
I've been thinking about making a GNU/Linux distro. I could go Debian, but a Debian-based distro has been done by everyone and their mother; plus I don't really want to make "just another shitty debian derivative". I looked at OpenSUSE's YaST and while it looked the easiest, it seems neglected. I imagine there should be some tools to help with creating a derivative that's done somewhat properly, KISS and all that, rather than me distributing some shitty virtual machine image that everyone else could only log into with the username that I set once.

What I'm looking for is something
>stable
>good hardware support without modifications
>low bloat
>not too prohibitive for me to strip bundled software out of and replace
>will get out of the way on updates and let me get out of the way.
>will get some packages from my server, but otherwise use base distro's default (ie. Salix or whatever I choose as base)
Preferably not too much maintainence on my side. Although when it updates, I would still like it to:
>request (from my server) and show a message/prompt if necessary before letting the like 2 users who might actually use this upgrade
>request list (from my server) of packages to skip upgrades for (from base distro's server) and obey it, but allow overriding from the user end

So I'm considering something Slackware-based, but not directly. I looked at Salix, Zenwalk, Slackel, and Vector. I don't know what's best for me really. I don't have much experience with anything Slackware-based, although I tried Slackware itself for a month.

Regarding hardware compatibility, I know with many packages you can make performance optimizations during compilation that will work best/only on your system. Using a Slackware derivative that already runs equally well on many different machines means less thing I could fuck up, one less low-level thing to worry . I probably don't know better than one of the more polished derivatives about compatibility so I would prefer to just piggyback off of their efforts.

also general question. how hard is it to compile a package /once/ that work well on multiple systems? with the scale of supported systems being the same scale as like the average distro? I'm not really looking for the speed advantages of compiling from source like gentoo has/is memed about, just something to make a stable binary from that will work on various different computers to the scale of a major distro' s support.

I'm not expecting to make a real competitor distro, but I figure using Slackware (or something even further down) as a base should help me meet a lot of my goals, and meet them properly.

TL;DR: Making a distro. Slackware-based? Salix?

Sometimes when I compile stuff to asm.js all my 12GB ram gets eat up.

Killing the process doesn't help, my ram stays at 100% + 5GB swap and the system runs like shit until I reboot it. Even if I check htop as root it says that most consuming process is chromium and it's using only 2% of RAM. free -m says that only ~200MB is used for caching.

How can I check what's actually using all the ram and kill it?

go recovery mode, as long as you can recover your files you have no reason to panic, and then complete your update in recovery mode, make sure you handle all dependencies and whatnot.

if you are using btrfs you could also revert to a snap, or if you have some other form of backup (which you should)
>>
>>61623641
Alright, I'll give this a go. Burning arch disk now.

>>61623733
Yeah, I'm not too panicked or anything. There isn't anything of value on my X220 anyways, since I keep all my files backed up and then a backup of said backup on another machine. I'll post back with how it goes later.

BTRFS*

It's been a few years and it's gotten more stable, still if you want ext4 or ext3 stable I'd say wait a year or two, you can still use a higher level snapshot using LVMs, but this has less performance

So far the best experience I had with linux distros after some mad distrohopping is openSUSE Tumbleweed.

Problem is, it's rather bloated. I don't care much about it on my desktop, I'm fine with that really. Problem is, I have an X220 and I want it there also. That's a 128GB SSD that might seem enough but still, would rather save as much space as possible.

So for someone who's not really that savvy, is there a lighter version, or maybe some notorious packages that wouldn't be needed at all? I know that with Xubuntu for instance they used to (dunno if they still do this) provide a "core" version that only included XFCE with the usual Xubuntu stuff, without most of those extra applications that you might never use.

Ok my dear /g/entoomen, I have a problem that I had to deal with for too long now. I have an Asus X552C laptop, with a Mediatek MT730E Wifi + Bluetooth Combo on it.
Point is: it doesn't fucking work. I use Ubuntu 16.04 (I have a double booting machine, 'cause I need Windows for work) and everytime I update the kernel I had to apply this patch to make it connect to WiFi and use bluetooth:

But now, with kernel 4.4.0-87, even that does nothing (my system freezes everytime I try to install it, and I have to hard reboot). I'm pretty much forced to use my windows partition for internet and shit.

So, since I'm a fucking noob, I have a few questions:

1 - Why the fuck is Ubuntu still not compatible with it? The patch existed for a while, couldn't the updates include it or be made in a way that makes them able to recognize my hardware and avoid fucking up the WiFi drivers every fucking time?

2 - There is something I can do to fix my problems right now?

3 - If not, what's a good (better than this one, at least) WiFi card that's perfectly compatible with both Windows (I use 8.1) and Ubuntu (and my other hardware, of course)? I need something that's not too expensive.

4 - If I buy this new one, can I change it myself? Do I need to format everything or it's almost as easy as adding ram (already done it) and I can just turn my PC on after it and use it?

The ironic thing is that I installed Ubuntu also because WiFi was working like shit in Windows (randomly disconnected, and I had to reboot every time to use it again) and on Linux it was slightly better, and now (after getting some updated drivers from Mediatek support by email and after the last kernel updates on Ubuntu) the situation became the opposite of that.

Debian or Fedora if you want to get shit done, Debian for stability (stable)/rolling release(testing/sid) or Fedora for cutting edge point release.

Arch is okay, it has some issues (devs don't care about users, only about keeping their job easy, broken Python syslink, Arch Way is a meme, etc), vanilla packages (a plus IMO) and manual setup for everything (Unlike Debian's scripts or Fedora's mostly sane default and activation), it also breaks a lot (see: kernel 4.12)

He's referring to python symlinking to python3 on Arch, while it's python2 on pretty much any other distro. This however isn't broken at all, Arch packages obviously expect it to be this way.

Exactly, except that external Python scripts expect "python3" or "python" depending on whatever it's using Python 2 or 3. It's a flaw on Arch.

python3 and python2 should work on any distro (and it's what the devs should use instead of relying on a distro-related symlink)

It's also the scripts fault if it uses bin/sh in the shebang and then doesn't work on dash, breaking on any Debian-based distro, and not Debians fault.

You'll probably want to give Antergos or Manjaro a spin before you delve into Arch.
Not that Arch is terribly difficult for an intermediate user or newcomer to grasp. Keep the installation guide and manual beside you and you'll seldom run into problems. The Arch Wiki is an excellent resource.
That being said, both Antergos and Manjaro are going to give you the ability to acquaint yourself with Pacman and the AUR. There's a world of difference between Debian derived distros and those based off vanilla Arch. For example, the Arch method of package management is a little different than Debian/Mint's dpkg/apt-get. You'll probably pick it up pretty quickly, though, and the ability to boot into a pre-made Arch install, where most everything "just werks," is quite convenient.
Best of luck, anon.

How do you use GPG to validate a signature using the web of trust when you get public key A from the same site as the file? It's signed by key B, which in turn is signed by key C from a reasonably trustworthy and separate organization such that I'm comfortable thinking getting A and C over https from their official sites means there's no trickiness going on since they both shouldn't be compromised by the same actor. Imported the key in the middle B from a keyserver and have C set to full trust and signed. Is --list-keys --list-options show-uid-validity B still supposed to come up [ unknown ]? I guess I'd have to have B trusted as full before --verify works, but how do I confirm that C signed B locally rather than relying on the keyserver's web interface?

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

Debian is a freetard distro unless you enable non-free repos. You've gotta expect these issues when you go freetard.
>>
>>61629092
Debian's Social Contract states the goal of making Debian entirely free software, and Debian conscientiously keeps nonfree software out of the official Debian system. However, Debian also provides a repository of nonfree software. According to the project, this software is “not part of the Debian system,” but the repository is hosted on many of the project's main servers, and people can readily find these nonfree packages by browsing Debian's online package database and its wiki.

There is also a “contrib” repository; its packages are free, but some of them exist to load separately distributed proprietary programs. This too is not thoroughly separated from the main Debian distribution.

Previous releases of Debian included nonfree blobs with Linux, the kernel. With the release of Debian 6.0 (“squeeze”) in February 2011, these blobs have been moved out of the main distribution to separate packages in the nonfree repository. However, the problem partly remains: the installer in some cases recommends these nonfree firmware files for the peripherals on the machine.

Debian's wiki includes pages about installing nonfree firmware.

You must be using an apt based distrobution,in which case, that is normal and working as intended

Not my system but yes it's apt based. So it's normal for apt to just uninstall half your system? LOL

Prolly using a Debian based distro. Apt is a shit.

What would be best GNOME distro? I heard of Fedora, but I tried at least KDE on that and it really shat the bed much more than other distros like Kubuntu/openSUSE. Not sure if it's the same with GNOME.
>>
>>61629465
What does the DE have to do with the distro?
>>
>>61629494
Not sure, but I did test out both Fedora and Tumbleweed with KDE and found that the former had many applications related to KDE crashing constantly.
>>
>>61629494
You can get newer versions with some distros.

He makes sense to a degree. I simply don't like how he thinks he is the mouthpiece for Linux. He is not.

Yes we would have.
Linux would have simply choose another userland and moved on.

GPL is for retarded faggots who want to give away all of their hard work for free.

Which is typical of stallman because he hasent contributed to the tech industry since '76,and just fucking wants free source code since he is no longer an innovator or creator
>>
>>61629848
Look at the license as nothing more than a declaration of freedom. It is unfortunate that corporate kikes only understand terminology like this.

What you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

There is absolutely nothing about ubuntu that makes it babby anything. If you value actually doing things with your os more than how many tryhard autistic points you get for installing it then theres no such thing as a babby distro.

Any pointers to a good resource on how to get vim set up and running properly?

I've been writing code in Atom up until now but since I'm planning to get an arrowkey-less keyboard soon I'd like to switch to an editor that doen't really require them. I've used vim only for small config file changes and stuff thus far.
>>
>>61630033
Na I've used almost every top distro even gentoo for a long time. I just realize its actually pointless to judge a distro based on how easy it is to install and install packages. What actually matters is what you can do with it.

You could try using emacs. Dont believe all the stuff about pinky. Theres not reason to use your pinky at at all. You can use the space cadet keyboard layout which lets you use your thumbs for C and M.
It looks like this.
[META]-[CTRL]-[ SPACE ]-[CTRL]-[META]

or theres an evil mode that lets you use vim keybindings.

It'll complain about missing symbols or library versions if that is the case. Then you will know!

Are there any major differences in security when it comes to Debian stable and testing?
>>
>>61631622
I'm not sure anyone has actually tracked security patches and how long it takes but the theory is:
* maintainer (or sometimes security team) learns of security issue and puts some time aside to patch their packages
* write patch or pull from upstream and apply to experimental/unstable package
* backport patch to stable version of package and add to backports
* package transitions from unstable to testing after normal grace period of 10 days without blocking bugs
So assuming the maintainers aren't slow at backporting testing should get access to fixes before testing and round the same time as unstable.
Of course stable has more security isses due to having older software and some of those issues wont apply at all to the newer suites.

>>
>>61631728
I know that non-free is unsupported but would it be more secure than others like Ubuntu, Arch, etc.
>>
As Linux is released under GPL2, does that mean I can sell Linux?
>>
>>61631728
Just double checked https://wiki.debian.org/DebianTesting and it seems testing does have a security channel `deb http://security.debian.org/ testing/updates main` and with just a two day delay.
>>
>>61631866
The individual packages in non-free and contrib are still supported by the maintainers of the packages, just not the security team. I don't know if arch and ubuntu have security teams that handle CVE to non-core packages either but I doubt it.
>>
>>61632004
Arch team says they monitor core, extra, and community. Would they make them the better choice over non-free debian?
>>
>>61631989
Why would rms allow people to sell their code with GPL? To make it more tenting for people to make their code libre?
>>
>>61631890
Yeah but the point is that you have to give you customers the source too. So if you just try to sell that your customers can just build it themselves. If you actually want to make a, functioning, business with you main product being gpl licensed you need to sell either tangible addons or non tangible things like your expertise in the product (prompt maintainance, customer specified additions, basically specialised contracting) or you customer support. This help create a healther commercial ecosystem around the product.
>>
>>61632032
I don't know how their suites compare but in arch don't most people got a bunch of packages from the aur anyway?
Really I think there is like a teir one of security in linux distros and all the main upstream ones are in it and comparable. Just pick which one you like.
>>
>>61632034
