How can you even say linux is good when there are people dying in the world and the linux users won't lift a finger to help them. How much do linux users donate to help these poor people versus the software companies you find evil? I think you'll find that software companies are actually trying to solve the problems of the world: sadness, poverty, hunger, suffering.

You just sit there and twiddle your thumbs asking for it all for free. Typical. Just typical.

There is no escaping the fact that linux is just an os for poor people. go into a bestbuy and look what is on the shelf. Every single god damn computer you see will be running a windows os. There's mac for people with more money than sense and that's like a fucking thousand to two thousand dollers.

Why would you even consider a computer where you have to erase everything off and install your own shit and customize and tweak it to make it work like the real thing when a real computer comes with the real thing included in the prices for you.

It's like buying a car and then taking the engine and all the parts out and then putting in your own parts and engine.

You should just take that time you spent to make some money and spend that money on a better car that comes with the shit you want.

There is no escaping the fact that Windows is just an OS for the stupid, uneducated masses, designed to function for the least common denominator of society. Go into the business world. Every goddam server you see will be running a Linux OS. Theres Mac for people with more money than sense, which is basically Unix, and thats like a fucking thousand to two thousand dollers.

Why would you even consider a computer where you have to worry about ransomware encrypting everything and having to download programs with possible trojans just to make it have the functionality of a linux when a real linux computer comes with the real thing included at no cost to you

It's like buying a Ford pinto car and then having to take out the gas tank so that it wont explode on you the first time someone accidentally taps into the back of your car in traffic.

You should just take that free time you spent to play video games and spend that time learning a better car that comes with the shit you want.

Because of the novelty of a /g/-created "operating system". In practical terms, it doesn't do anything new, nor contribute anything upstream, so it's basically worthless.

It also removes the (albeit negligible) educational merit of a new user installing Gentoo.

What did you like in Unity? What did you dislike in KDE and GNOME?

Have you tried Xfce? There's probably a theme that you would enjoy. If you don't like the UI, why not try i3-gaps with a theme from r/unixporn.

Are you comfortable with trying a BSD (FreeBSD or OpenBSD) or do you prefer to stick with a GNU/Linux? I'm thinking about Void Linux (unbloated Ubuntu with OpenBox) or Debian testing (which is unbloated enough to be used for servers). You may try Archlinux to get used to the cli but while it's minimal it's not aimed at being lightweight.

I want to set up a linux distro at work to do system administrative tasks.

I'm considering Mint because it's supposed to be comfy, but I don't want anything to break when I update, so I was also considering CentOS. I'm not new to linux, pretty comfortable, just not up to date on the latest distro trends. Btw, I hate Gnome 3, so I'm wary of Cinnamon because I really like Gnome 2 and Mate.

While I'm not extremely bothered, is there any way of making compton work without laggy dragging and without tearing? Try installing Gentoo, the wiki explains to you what is required and it has items on how to enable support for your graphics card etc. It will be hard the first time though, but in the end you'll have a very minimal system with a kernel configured by yourself.

Shit actually, I'm grepping a bunch of stuff and when it comes down to jpg and jpeg, that 5 character becomes 6.

What's going on is that, I'm putting a filename after the URL I'm grepping from a curl output, but whenever I get it to be in this format
URL/image.jpg newfilename

I do some pipes and get this
URL/image.jpg newfilename
.jpg

Then I pipe
paste -sd ' \n'
and I get this horror
URL/image.jpg newfilename .jpg

That space is killing me right now. How can I fix it?

I did a rev piped with the command to cut it and rev again, but unfortunately if I have jpeg or webm, it will not be the same.

Howdy folks, got a list of questions:

1. I'd like to switch to either openbox or i3 on my high-dpi but small monitor laptop, I've run them before with bigger font sizes but it never really fit right, any tips?
2. What's the best way to manage self-compiled packages? How do you install a package to a seperate partition like /opt with say apt for example.
3. I've written IPtables rules a few times, looked at basic stateful firewalls, and read some man pages but still don't really know what I'm doing making fresh rules for a new install. Is there an easy way to see what ports my applications actually use or might possibly need?
4. Same as 1. but with gtk and qt applications
5. Any tips on tools to autoread my logs, usually I only check them when something is visibly broken, otherwise they are unread and rotated. I feel like I'm missing things.

Thank you very much!

>Users of all levels are welcome to ask questions about GNU/Linux and share their experiences.

I've been thinking about making a Linux distro for a short while now. A debian based distro has been done by everyone and their mother, anf I don't really want to make a "just another shitty debian derivative". I looked at OpenSUSE's creater studio and while it looked like it would probably be the easiest, it seems neglected. So I'm considering something slackware-based, but not directly because I'd like to take advantage of of other slackware-based distros compiling for multiple systems and save myself some work.

what I'm looking for is something
>stable
>with support for a lot of hardware already
>not too prohibitive for me to strip bundled software out of
>something that gets out of the way on updates the same way that slackware is said to. I'd like to have my say before letting the like 2 people who might use my shitty distro update but other than that it shouldn't be too much maintenance on my side
>low bloat

been on gentoo for three years, so I know some stuff
I looked at Salix, Slackel, Vector, and Zenwalk. I don't know what's best for me really and I don't have much experience with anything slackware based, although I gave slackware itself a try

also general question. how hard is it to compile a package to work well on many systems? with the scale of supported systems being the same scale as like the average distro? I'm not really looking for the speed advantages of compiling from source like gentoo is memed about, just something stable and cross platform to make a binary from, without messing with appimage snakeware

tldr making a distro, want to use something slackware-based but not directly cuz too lazy. maybe salix-based?

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

Hardware support doesn't really matter from distro to distro, as it's the kernel itself that affects hardware compatibility. Yes, it's true that different projects might ship with slightly different kernels, and they might not package proprietary firmware, but there's literally nothing stopping you from downloading Linux vanilla and patching it yourself. Read the gentoo wiki if you're having trouble.

>how hard is it to compile a package to work well on many systems?
Literally not that hard at all if you have the required dependencies. It's even easier if you already have a build script available for you, as with Slackware. Basically every Slackware fork is reverse-compatible with the original Slackware.

You clearly have no idea how much work is cut out for you, if you're sincerely thinking about maintaining a distribution--especially a Slackware-based distribution. It's not like Ubuntu where you can slap some bullshit together and call it a "distribution". Before you do any of that, at least try LFS to see what it's like to maintain packages.

When you sit down and make an OS, make a list of what stuff is needed, find programmers who help and write the system, you have an OS (what GNU did in the 80s). Linux is an OS too from an computer sciencific view, but not something you can actually run on its own.

Alrigt, the reason I mentioned this is because I don't think I should deal with that kind of thing. I know with many packages you can make performance optimizations during compilation that will work best/only on your specific hardware. One less thing I could fuck up, one less low-level thing to worry about. I probably don't know better than one of the slackware derivatives when it comes to hardware

I'm not planning on making any huge modifications to it at first. I'm going to release something either way, even if it's just a virtual machine image with a single username that you can log into.
But I want to do it somewhat properly - not build test or host the full set of packages on a server, but still do several packages fetched only from me, but with everything else I would get in the way minimally and let it update from Salix or whatever I chose

of course you can run proprietary stuff on it, there's nothing inherently stopping you, but the biggest issue you'll run into is there will be absolutely no support: proprietary stuff likely isn't going to be packaged for guixsd and it's likely not in a format that will be accepted by guix, and the devs won't or can't provide support for installing proprietary software, therefore to run something proprietary like steam you'll have to do it in a completely manual do it your self way, entirely self supported
part of the requirements for the free software foundation to recommend a distro is that the distro can't offer any official documentation on a project related website or mailing list (etc) on how to install proprietary software or how to obtain it, recommendations of proprietary software, etc, on a less zealous distro you might find someone in an irc channel or something to help you but given guixsd is gnu ran the chances of this are very low

with that out of the way I can't give you any solid advice but if you do really have nothing better to do the way to start would be finding out how steam is packaged (afaik they only officially support ubuntu, when it's provided for other distros it's a community effort) and find out how guix manages packages then make sure all the provided binaries/libraries are in the right place and make sure the external dependencies are there and are in the right locations... it might just be easier to use another distro for steam

Just a general question, not sure if anyone can point me any direction with it. I work within a small company which provides various IT and Telecom services to other businesses within the region. The vast majority, if not all, environments utilise Windows Server (Some virtualised, some not) I was just wondering earlier today about how we could perhaps implement Linux into some of our existing and potential environments later down the line, given that it sees very little use. I know it is a general question... but I am looking for a general answer too.

I hoped this guide would be what I needed, but it hasn't been of much use: https://pthree.org/2012/12/31/zfs-administration-part-xv-iscsi-nfs-and-samba/

It could possibly change depending on whether the underlying file system supports extended ACLs.

Right lads, it's finally happening.

I'm going to go head-first into installing Linux.

I really like the look of KDE and Manjaro looks particularly nice. But I know that's not the only beautiful looking DE, and there are better distros available.

Is there any distro that is both beautiful and functional? Or riceable? I don't care much for apps, as long as I can use it for virtualization.

"ls" is one such program that is designed to show the "true" files, recognizing symlinks as symlinks, but will go "into" symlinked directories if told to, like you did

the first command you wrote is telling ls "what is /games", and the latter is saying "what is IN /games/"
the "trailing slash" is how you explicitly tell things to treat the last name as a directory, in some cases it's important to know when to use a trailing slash, things like tar and rsync for example can do very different things depending on whether you use it or not

you can tell ls to never treat symlinks as symlinks as well, if need be
% ln -s /tmp games
% ls --dereference-command-line-symlink-to-dir games
games

many many things will fit those criteria, including manjaro + kde
>riceable
most riceable popular de is going to be xfce
many distros themselves are riceable, esp if they have a netinstaller with a minimal option, like debian ubuntu fedora etc. you don't have to go to arch or like-arch

for best kde experience go kde neon

Yeah, that's what actually got me first thinking this because we've recently installed a VPN server to provide connectivity for 170 users.

Looks interesting, I'll look into it... although we actually provide Gamma/Horizon systems and so I can't see this getting much use.

Will have to look into this....

That means you are trying to load a module built against a different kernel to the one running.
use modinfo on the module and compare the vermagic to uname -r to confirm.

Stupid question: I want to install foobar2k on one partition so that it can be accessed by both win7 and SUSE (through wine). so its components work properly.
Would it work if i made a FAT partition and installed foobar there?
pic related: what happens when i try to run foobar.exe from the NTFS partition.

there's a hint in the error, "noexec filesystem?"
have you checked you didn't mount the partition it's on with noexec?

if you don't know, "noexec" is a mount option which tells linux not to permit files to be executed from that volume, even if they have filesystem execute permission
it's commonly used for untrusted things like external storage

Philosophy behind the distro, which directly influx on the packages it uses and how it's developers deal with different problems.

Fedora can use the same programs as gentoo, but the distros are still very different.

Haven't run Linux in close to five years, considering giving it another shot. Out of all the things I looked at, Deepin caught my eye the most. Seems there's some controversy around the disto itself though, and some people just use the desktop environment as opposed to the distro(Manjaro seems to be a popular pairing) itself.

wat do. Should I go with the distro, or just use the DE? Stuff in the OP doesn't have a whole ton about the distro.

A little while ago I installed a development version of Linux manually, and I don't need it anymore.
Just to make sure, what do I need to delete to make sure I get all of it.
/boot/vmlinuz-whatever
/boot/initramfs-whatever.img
/boot/initramfs-whatever-fallback.img
/etc/mkinitcpio.d/whatever.preset (because Arch)
/usr/lib/modules/whatever/
Update the GRUB boot menu

Is there anything I'm missing?

Honestly, it smells like botnet. But if you don't mind that, test it.
If the only thing about the distro that calls your attention is the DE, then just go with another distro and install DDE in said distro and call it a day.
But again, if you don't mind all of that botnet thing, try both options and see what you like the most
