I'm honestly shocked at the current state of this website. Yeah, we made chinkshit jokes sometimes, but it was all fun, right? At the end of the day, we all aren't poor, we all live in Swizerland, and we all opposed cheap chinkshit watches. But now? Our entire fucking site is subverted because of fucking Seikofags.
The internet is OUR platform. the ROLEX platform. Cheap, ugly, and terrible investments were all confirmed to be left in the past because millenials are the most finacially sucessful generation of all time. So why in the FUCK, do we still have to deal with Seikofags IN TWENTY-FUCKING-SEVENTEEN? Despite how much you wanna cry about how it's just a conspiracy and a boogeyman, poorfags ARE real, and this site is proof. We went from one of the most prestigious sites in the world to supporting Orange Fucking Divers? Nah, that's not normal progression because people only get more prestigeous with age, just like how you get smarter with age.
Threads like these just show that we need MUCH more strict moderation around here. I'm sick of all of this shit. Fuck Weebs, Fuck Quartz, Fuck Seiko, Fuck Drumpf, Fuck Nippon, and FUCK POORFAGS. Just fucking nuke this site already.

I get analog devices (pun intended) are nicer looking than digital ones, but translating hand position to numbers usually take more effort and (ironically) time than just reading a string of digits
>>61619229
I think it depends on the type of watch face, and how familiar you are with reading an analog clock. Like I can look at my Casio and see that it's 2:12, but I can still look at my SNK803 and realize the same thing in around the same time.
I honestly only wore the Casio until last Winter and was always pretty bad with reading clocks, even though they taught it in elementary school contrary to what Boomers think, but you really pick up on it when it's your main method of checking the time.

DateJust is more versatile. Explorer is cooler as a casual weekend watch, whereas the DJ could look 'old man' in that scenario.
I'm struggling with the same question myself.
16234 DJ, steel with white gold bezel might be the most versatile Rolex of all.
You could add a sportier watch afterwards.

>>61619599

The reason i didn't jump for the Explorer right away is because i'm afraid the simple, black dial of it will bored me after the honeymoon period.
DJ is just beautiful especially with the grey dial, but it doesn't have that tool, goes anywhere without worry watch vide that the explorer got.
>>61620163
That particular grey DJ is pretty sweet. If you're looking at vintage pieces anyway try and find a linen dial.

The Explorer is very cool.
Ultimately, if someone wore an Explorer to a wedding would they look like a cunt? I don't think so. In THAT situation a DJ would be better, but how many weddings a lifetime will someone attend.
And the Explorer is definitely OK in 2017 with a business suit.
It's a tough decision. I think for a young man into Rolex, his best bet might be the Explorer today, and skip the DJ and treat himself to a Day Date years down the line.

Seiko 7025-5010
>7025 movement, quickset date, smaller rotor (for flatness maybe?)
>Daini Seikosha factory
>1977 manufacture
That one is pretty beat, here's a pic of a steel one of the same model. Any half-retarded watchmaker who's done a 7000 series Seiko can service and restore it. Many parts of the movement can be swapped with new 7S26 parts. Crystal is probably mineral so you're fucked there, it can only be painstakingly polished with something like cerium-oxide or diamond paste, and good luck finding a NOS one.
>>61623064
Literally the first Google hit for Seiko 7025-5010 is a nos crystal on ebay

you would be all over it if it had a mechanical movement.
their finishing is excellent compared to say a timex weekender that has a loud ticking non-Japanese movement, brass case instead of stainless steel, plastic hands instead of steel, ...
>>61621134
they are assembled in China, parts aren't from China. their movement is Japanese.
anyway that is far from the only cost for releasing a watch:
BoM, QC, distribution, logistics, marketing, service ..
DW's profit margins are unlikely higher than Rolex.
if Rolex skipped all their QC and automated the last remaining manual steps like applying markers to the dial, some retarded analyst could lowball their manufactoring cost at like $10.
it's basically the same automated assembly as elsewhere just with more steps because mechanical movements have so many parts.

>>61629032
If only the crystal is bad, it shouldn't be that much relatively speaking unless you also want the thing to be COA'd.
>>61628957
>With history i meant literally just history, like for example Seiko or Timex has.
you are brainwashed by marketing if you think those have any history.
Seiko stopped making high-end mechanical movements in the 1970s after quartz happened and had to start from scratch in the 1990s after they saw how much money the Swiss made.
so the history of the 2nd gen Grand Seiko starts at 1998.
TimeX is some Dutch holding group now.

>>61630019
Mechanical watches like that need servicing after a number of years to stop the parts wearing. So if he wants to wear it and depending when it was last done it may need to be.
>>61630019
First of all the watch should be serviced as it was just inherited. Second of all it is not a fucking Seiko you throw away every 10 years.. It is a 10 thousand dollar heirloom. You want to ensure you maintain a paper trail and have the watch serviced by only professionals with good tools and legitimate parts. The watch needs to be sent to patek themselves.
I've been saving for a watch these months but I have no idea from where to buy it. Should i risk buying a watch without a warranty? I'm from europe btw.
>>61630019
This isn't a Vostok Amphibia where the factory says it has a 10 year service life and a realistic life of maybe an extra decade; it's a hand crafted watch that's around 57 years old that was probably last serviced during the Vietnam War. It may run when you wind it up, but it will need oiling and some of the parts might be getting worn down.

Hey /WG/
I need a recommendation for a pocket watch. I'm a machinist and the company I work for has regulations against employees wearing anything that could be an entanglement hazard around rotating equipment 'ie watches' and they also have regulations against having our phones out on the floor (they're a distraction). So I need a pocket watch, my budget is around $200usd, maybe more and I'd prefer new manufacture (I don't want to wreck an antique). Some kind of autowinder in a stainless steel case would be ideal for durability as I'll bumping into machines and carts all day. I asked in a previous thread and didn't get a reply, you guys have to have some idea of something that's not pocket autism.

To be fair, they did end up resurrecting a fair number of Daini movement designs (including the 52xx and 68xx) and a surprising number of Daini vets ended up at the re-started Grand Seiko.

Seiko Astron did cost as much as a car, not sure if it even was sold outside of Japan. They could produce 10 per month.
so not sure, which Seiko model they actually could produce in mass and sell cheap.
Texas Instruments prolly introduced affordable quartz to most Americans:

that's an ASP of ~$100 in 1981.

>A head‐to‐head confrontation is shaping up between the entry into the watch field of such major semiconductor producers as Texas Instruments, Hughes Aircraft, National Semiconductor and Litronix, Inc., on one hand,. and the traditional watch producers such as the Timex Corporation, Bulova, the Benrus Watch Company and Longines‐Wittnauer on the other.

the irony of history.
>>61632522
US watch industry killed itself.
digital LED watches were the most common.
there was heavy competition on price, so no one had any money left to invest in superior LCDs over LEDs.

That depends mainly on your wrist size.
Or is it too masculine, do you think?

I got some nu-male ones and no watch suits my faggy wrists.
Looking to purchase my first "real" watch, my budget is 700€.
I'd like to wear it every day, so that it has to be something simpler but yet elegant and interesting to look at with some good highlights.

The Casio MRW-200H which is ~20€ (Amazon Germany) is to big for me (4,5 cm x 4,5 cm), so i'm looking for something smaller. Preferably one where i can change the strap, cause i like leather.
>>61642310
That Zenith is 6,000 dollars US
>>61642175
You can't. Wrist size is determined by bones + fat. There's no muscle in your wrist, only tendons which aren't going to appreciably gain size no matter how much you exercise.
Just stick to 40mm or lower if your wrists aren't big. Also use a metal bracelet, it beefs up the area visually.

Vintage Omega or Zenith.
You're not going to get anything new that isn't dogshit.
If you save up more you can get a vintage Rolex Air-King for around $2000.

>>61642560

You people keep recommending vintage Omegas to everyone who comes asking for cheap watches. Vintage watches are not cheap, if you buy an Omega for $500 or whatever on ebay I guarantee it's going to require servicing and suddenly it's a $1000 watch. Do you people buy a crusty 50 year old watch and just slap it on your wrist immediately and let it grind itself to dust?
I love vintage watches, but they're a shit recommendation for someone who just stumbles in here asking for a first watch that looks nice and just works and doesn't require intensive research to make sure the watch you're buying online isn't a ripoff.
>>61642310

I aready stated the caveat that he isn't going to be getting anything new that isn't dogshit at that price. Vintage mid-tier Swiss watches are the best you're going to get in that category if you're insistent that $1000 or so is what you will be spending.
Oris is a good option if you're looking for decent mid-tier watches, but even then you would probably be happier with saving up more.

Maurice Lacroix Eliros Chronograph
>>61642310
That's a pretty bad spot to be in, budget-wise. Stretch it just a little bit to almost 1000€ and you can get a Sinn 104 which is a good watch, unique style and getting more and more popular. You'll have the chance to not be a trend follower for once (you won't be a trendsetter tho).
Within budget you'll only really find shitters or dumb ripoffs like Steinhart if that's your sort of thing.
>>61642832
For $1000 he could maybe swing a Sinn if he's into that, especially a well cared-for used one. Otherwise that's not a very good price range to be in, but there's plenty of sub-$500 Seikos or mid-tier Swatch like Hamilton. I wouldn't really consider a Hamilton Khaki or Jazzmaster or Intra-matic or SARB or Sumo dogshit.
And they come with sapphire crystals and automatic winding and quickset dates and high beatrates and solid link bracelets and all the stuff that you don't get in a vintage watch. Most people are not autists like us and don't see much in a scratched up crusty old watch that belonged to a dead person and went out of fashion decades ago.
>>61642983
Why the 104? What about a Sinn 556 instead?
