If you want help:
>Assemble your parts list
https://pcpartpicker.com/
>State the budget for your build (and country if not the USA)
>List games/software you use often, as well as your monitor resolution + refresh rate
>Clarify your goal for build improvements: lower price or improved specs?
How to assemble a PC, select components & more (kind of outdated)
https://wiki.installgentoo.com/index.php?title=Build_a_PC

CPUs:
No i5 unless discounted
>G4560/G4600 - Budget builds (<$500)
>R5 1400 - Cheapest quad core you can get (Ryzen 3 soon)
>R5 1500x - Good but up to 1600 if you can
>R5 1600 - Best value for higher fps gaming / mixed usage; 1600x if you want higher stock clocks
>i7 7700k - Only for 144hz
>R7/Used Xeon/Threadripper - Compute/Multitask/VM/mixed use; Not for just gaming

GPUs:
Coin miners have driven price up and stock down, waiting to buy a GPU might be wiser
>Integrated CPU Graphics - Desktop stuff and very light games
>GTX 1050(Ti) - Lower end budget cards, drop settings on newer games, RX560 beaten by both
>RX570 - 1080p@60~hz maxed, running most maxed older games at 100~Hz
>RX580 and GTX1060 6GB - 1080p@80hz maxed, 1440p@60hz at lower settings; RX580 better in newer games
>GTX 1070 - 1080p@130hz /1440p@60hz at high
>GTX 1080 - 1080p@144hz / 1440p@60hz maxed, 4k@60hz in a few games; Probably the highest end card you need for 1080p/1440p
>GTX 1080Ti - 1440p@144hz and 4k@60hz maxed/high in many games

RAM:
>Check your Mobo QVL before buying any RAM
>Ryzen CPUs benefits a lot from high speed RAM

General:
ALWAYS LOOK AT PRODUCT REVIEWS!
Always consider an SSD. Try buying a large SSD for what you'd pay for your SSD+HDD combined, and add a HDD later
NVMe SSDs aren't for a faster OS boot, they're for productivity/scratch disk/VMs. NVMe and M.2 are not the same thing, M.2 is a form factor.
The Ryzen lineup comes with surprisingly good stock coolers. consider using them over any <$30 cooler.

Both the CPU and the GPU are overpowered for games like that. You could get away with a 1400 and an RX 560 and still be perfectly playable

More RAM, ATX board, better PSU, more storage, SSD, fancier case
Get the 1050ti now and wait for the GPU market to go back to normal until you upgrade
280$ for a 1060 just isn't reasonable
You could get a slightly weaker card for a similar price almost 3 years ago
The 1050ti will do just fine for the next 2 years
The RX560 would be a weaker but cheaper option that will also do fine

looks good, just double check the QVL for the asrock board to make sure your ram is compatible at appropriate speeds.

Which one is better price/performance, a 6700k with a mobo that allows OC or a 7700 non k with a cheap mobo.

Still looking at prices and the performance I'm seeing the 1600-1700 seems like the way to go because the only games I need to run at 120-144fps+ are shit like OW that the ryzen does perfectly, triple AAA shit and normal games I'm fine with 60-72. But I also like to do a lot of old consoles emulation and some badly optimized single core games like KSP and Intel still win on those sadly. Only one I'm seeing ryzen flexing it's cores it's the ps3 emulator.

Only thing i'm not sure about is the motherboard. is this gonna be OK?
>>
>>61569161
You can OC Ryzen to 4GHz with basically no effort at all, and then we're talking frankly unnoticeable framerate differences.

Get a case without a PSU, those usually suck ass
Get a Seasonic G 550 or 650W, those are cheap-ish and good
What speed is that RAM?
Get a Ryzen 1600 and drop the cooler
>>

I've been using a Bronze PSU for over 4 years. The ratings denote efficiency, not reliability. Just stick to reputable brands and pick the highest rating that's reasonable for your budget, with Bronze as an ideal minimum rating.

Yeah, looking at the benchmarks and shit out there It's hard to justify paying (at least here in spain) 200-240€ premium for the intel oc setup just because It will be somewhat better in 2-3 things. When at everything else I need the 1600 does as good or better. And looking at some CEMU/dolphin/pcsx2 benchs it will be an improvement over what I have and for rpcs3 ryzen's looking good.

Is pic related a solid choice? Will I be able to upgrade to ryzen+ or whatever is called for the extra ipc and clockspeed? Will I be able to oc this ram or is it better to pay the premium for 3000 ram?
>>
>>61569317
>Will I be able to upgrade to ryzen+ or whatever is called for the extra ipc and clockspeed?
Yup. You'll just need to update the bios before upgrading
>>

are corsair PSUs not good then? i kind of need to buy on this website and I can't find any 750W PSUs that aren't either the seasonic titanium or corsair. could i get away with a 650W? I'm buying a 1080ti now so i'd rather be safe.

i am also at a loss as to which motherboard to pick. the ASRock looks fine, but it's pretty cheap. Someone suggested a "slightly better one". I need some examples because I'm pretty lost.

You could get away with 550W. The only time you really need to go over 600W is if you're getting a dual GPU system or something equally exotic.

Yes. B350 is the go to. It supports overclocking and crossfire, but not SLI. Nobody SLI'd anymore so that's fine.

Yup. I'm personally getting the white version, the Tomahawk Arctic.

I got a new motherboard for my 4460 that has a fuckload of settings (a GA-Z97-HD3) to fiddle with. I noticed as of late that a few select tasks I did under the same exact conditions last year run slightly slower.

I noticed that there are many options for turbo boost, EIST and such. Would it be a terrible idea to disable these?

I've got a max budget of ~$2100 but would prefer to be under that if possible. My goal is to having something for high end gaming.

I don't have a 4k monitor (Though I could buy one technically) so I'm guessing that the 1080ti would be extreme overkill for me at the moment based on the quick comments in the OP.

I understand that there's GPU price inflation going on right now but it's not to the extent that I'm super willing to delay my build in order for the prices to normalize again.

Based on what people have recently stated I'm guessing I should go with the Ryzen 1700 or 1600?

How much "excess" wattage should my PSU have compared to what pcpartspicker is showing the demand will be?

Also Windows7 vs 10?
>>
>>61573325
I really doubt that. Bulldozer is a steaming pile of shit especially with those clockspeeds.

>>

>>
>>61573468
Better value and it isn't on a dead socket, so there's a clearer upgrade path. With fast ram, bios updates, and an overclock the difference between a 7700k and Ryzen are marginal, especially so if you're gaming in higher resolution.
Ryzen is better at everything that isn't single threaded and has better minimum frames, so less stuttering. The extra cores help if you have anything running in the background while gaming too.
1600 is the best value cpu available considering the stock cooler is solid enough for a mild overclock.

So I have a budget of around ~$1700 for a new PC. I was thinking of going with a Ryzen build; however I noticed that a lot of the microATX boards, and even ATX boards, are having some BIOS issues with recognizing the clock speeds on QVL RAM.

In addition, I heard that the new Nvidia Volta architecture is set to release sometime soon™.

Can any anons share their experience with their AM4 socket mATX boards, and possibly give me some more information on Volta? Should I wait to build?

Look up benchmarks for the game. If it's reliant on single core performance 7700k will do better, but it's not like Ryzen will be a slouch either.

I've been on the fence of buying Ryzen for the past month. Newegg (canada) is currently offering this and I was wondering if it's worth getting (i.e. is this the best price). I'm currently using a 4690k, Z97 Krait (cheapo msi), and an 850 evo.
Normal price for the 1800x is $659(CAD), the Taichi is $334, and the 960 evo is $500.
>>
>>61576297
If you save only 20$ The 1800x is just not worth it. Get a 1700 or 1700x if you want high clock speeds tho no big difference
>>
>>61576297
Good motherboard but try and find a bundle with the 1700 instead. You can easily OC the 1700 to 1800x levels and it's 3/4 the price of an 1800x. (1800x doesn't have that much over clocking head room either.) Plus the stock cooler that comes with the 1700 is pretty decent.

SSD, SSD+HDD, or HDD?
Is a 120GB SSD + 1TB USB HDD going to be any good?
>>
>>61576394
SSD and internal HDD.

Biggest SSD you can afford and just throw in a WD blue, they're cheap enough.
>>
>>61576394
ps SSD/HDD hybrids are garbage and not worth it anymore.
>>
>>61576394
If it's for faster system boot than yes. If it's for games and programs then no you need a bigger ssd
>>
>>61576405
Wait why not? You get the speed of an SSD with the capacity of a hard drive at an actually reasonable price.

>>

Anything that has a B350.
>>
>>61576433
Hybrids use the SSD as a cache. You don't actually get the full speed of an ssd.

It's like intel's new optane shit. sure it's better, but you might as well go full on and get an SSD and a separate hard drive for bigger storage.

Recently I bought a DVI-D -> DisplayPort cable, passive.
Turns out I was a retard (who spent $12 so who cares it was cheap as hell) who didnt look up active vs passive for DP->DVI-D.
So, I only get 60hz on my 144hz monitor, which is the specific issue I was trying to fix...

That said, am I fucked? I don't have DP on my monitor. It's that Acer one.

What about

It would be about 40€ cheaper build. Not sure how old the mobo is since it includes a copy of WinXPpro but it has WiFi and Blutooth.

buy the biggest one you can afford, Samson 850evo and up are the most approved ones but Crucial and WD are fine too. Yes they get faster when they are bigger up to a certain point.
What model is your laptop? Many modern laptops come with a slot for an mSata drive which negates the need to pull out your old hdd.
Keep in mind that the SSD you order might not come with the spacer you need to make it fit correctly into the 2.5" bay.

To add onto this, would there be problem if I had 3x120mm pulling air in and 3x140mm pushing air out (2x140 for the radiator and a single 140 in the back)?

>>
>>61577879
Just compare the CFM. Size doesn't matter, just how much air they move at once.

Otherwise if you have more exhaust than intake, that air has to come from somewhere and starts pulling in dust through seems in the build. The opposite is also true, however you probably won't reach or go under ambient temps.
>>
>>61578253
Thanks. So I'm definitely going to have a problem with the fans I picked. Should I drop an outtake fan and use 2x140mm fans for intake? (For reference, I'm currently looking at Corsair's ML140 fans and Noctua's NF12s, although I'm waiting on Noctua's consumer chromax line to launch)

Looks fine, but why not get the R5 1600? You clearly have the budget for it.
>>
>>61578672
get the r51600, it comes with an extremely good stock cooler and would be better in general
you can power a 1440p 60hz monitor easily with a 1070 if you feel like spending a few extra sheckles
>>
>>61578672
the fuck is that ram price lmao
>>
>>61578712
Yeah, i'll change to the 1600x, only $50 more, I can push another 50, and 25 more for a separate cooling unit because the 1600x doesn't have a stock. I will be able to push another $75, I hope.

>>61578742
Yeah, but see, the 1070 with a 1440p monitor is like a GTX 1060 3GB with a 1080p monitor. You get good frames in the 80-90 area, yeah, but what about in 2 years? It just wouldn't last as long as a 1070 and a 1080p monitor. Plus, 1080p is enough for me.

>>61578744
Is this bait or are you actually that stupid? This is probably the price area for 16GBs or DDR4-3000 ram you are going to see. This is cheap compared to the $159 ram you can buy of the same specs.

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/bcG4f8
How is this? I know that it is showing possible compatibility issues, i'll probably change the motherboard to something similar that will work. Maybe change the cooling unit.

I said 1600, not 1600x. I mean, the 1600x obviously isn't a bad buy, there just isn't much reason to get it unless you're worried about not being able to OC all the way to 4.0 GHz. Plus the 1600 comes with a cooler.

I know you said the 1600 and not 1600x, but the 1600 is 3.2GHz, even if it has 6 cores, I am not willing to go under 3.5GHz.

And the 212 LED, $27 LED cooler can do so much better than the stock on the 1600.

>I know you said the 1600 and not 1600x, but the 1600 is 3.2GHz, even if it has 6 cores, I am not willing to go under 3.5GHz.
You can OC the 1600 to around 3.7 easily with just the stock cooler.

It's a Toshiba C55, few years old at this point so I don't think it has an m.2 slot. From videos I've seen the current hdd in there already has a spacer, but I'll probably order one with the ssd to be safe.
