That seriously looks sloppy.
>>61560043
that would piss me off with how much that thing costs considering AP managed it on the royal oak in the 70s
>>61560043
They screw in the screws to a certain point to tune the repeater gong. Can't just hammer them on full torque and expect the thing to sound good or at all.

Get one that is between 1996 and 2006 with the 1120 movement. Earlier movement had a flaw and the newer co-axial is questionable.

i have one of these. keeps worse time than my better mechanicals. fucking awful chink shit
What are the best entry level mechanical (manual winding or automatic, but preferably the latter) watches?
>>61560884
Watches made in ussr
>>61560884
one of these. the one pictured has a custom crown and bezel though (its mine)
>>61561095
is that a specific vintage, or one of the newer ones?
>>61560884
Bottom of barrel is a Seiko 5. Automatic 7s26 but no hand winding or hacking. Can get those starting at about $60
Also there is Vostok Amphibia. You get hand winding with these and a waterproof diver. These movements are not as accurate from my experiences but for about $65-$80 hard to beat.
Some slightly higher end Seiko 5's come with the 4r36 movement, which has hand winding and hacking. Good movement. These can be found for maybe around $150.
Entry level true Seiko diver is the SKX. It unfortunately has the 7s26 movement so not hand winding or hacking, but you do get a legit 200m diver with better quality control compared to the Vostok. Can get these for about $190-$200
Entry level swiss movement would have to be a Hamilton Khaki. Got a reliable ETA movement and can be had for low to mid $300 if I recall.
Some might not consider this entry level but I think the Seiko SARB033 is a great choice to get after you try out a Seiko 5 and like it. For the money you get a crisp design with great finishing and a good movement. I think it is the most versatile watch on my list Also mid to low $300.
>>61560884
or alternatively, one of these
>>61561175
Also forgot to mention the Hamilton khaki also had a manual wind only version. Best entry level swiss on the new market if you don't mind hand wind only and can be had for about $260.
>>61560884
>>61561175
i'd recommend you not to fall for the SKX meme. its got the same movement as seikos at 25% the price and its lacking handwind and hacking, so you have to wave your arm around like a spastic to wind it from stopped
>>61561158
this is new. got it from meranom.com. its the 090059
>>61561175
I believe that i will go with the vostok amphibia, Are there any parts that i should replace with custom parts, or is it alright factory new?
>>61561338
You will need a new strap/bracelet/band. The stock one is absolute garbage.
>>61561338
definitely order from meranom. add watch to cart, add "changing spare parts" to cart and add a stainless steel crown to cart and add in the notes section of the order that you want them to install the crown
if you want a custom bezel, then get it aftermarket from ebay and install it yourself
>>61561359
I was thinking about getting a bund strap for ussr"ness" as well as the extra leather. what are the best straps for this kind of watch?
>>61561395
Standard crown is absolutely fine, but also just order a new model number (pic) and it will come with a milled crown anyways as well as a steel bezel.

Alright I've got my vintage seiko time to move onto vintage omega. I've seen quite a few kicking around in here. What is the caliber I should be looking for?
>>61561994
A 564 is goat. This is a 613. 601/613 is essentially a manual wind version of the 563 series and is also good. 321 or 1045 for chronographs.
>>61561694

>>61561994
>>61562137
Agreed on pretty much all counts. Don't forget that the 75x is a day/date version of the 56x. Also, while I'm partial to the 1045, I would avoid both it and the 321 unless you are prepared to spend on its upkeep as vintage chronographs are not exactly cheap to maintain.
HNNNNG it's finally arrived!
>Tfw only got to try it on and then had to put it back in its box until my birthday
>>61562592
I just switched out my strap on this for a Hirsch, really ups the feel of it - I find the holes on the stoc leather make the watch sit outside of my wrist bone. Would recommend changing it
>>61561694
Behead those who put leather straps on divers.
>>61561994
I don't think there's really any bad ones from the 60s. My watch has a 561 which is very highly regarded. 561 is the automatic chronometer date version but there's also the 564 which adds a quickset date (you never realize how much watchmaking has advanced and how convenient quickset date it until you own a watch without it). The 551 is the same movement with no date. There's also the Seamaster movements which were not chronometer certified and came with or without date or with and without automatic winding.
I think they're all very closely related. Back then automatic winding and date displays were sort of premium upgrades so the movements mix and match those features on top of the same base.

>My biggest gripe with him is how he thinks every watch should be 36-38mm becuase he's got bitch wrists. There's literally nothing wrong with 40-42mm watches.
His problem isn't bitch wrists, it's bitch forearms
Someone who works out and has 6" wrists and a meaty forearm can wear any watch without looking stupid
40mm+ is only OK for sports watches, no one has ever published a photo demonstrating otherwise, all we see are hideous dinner plates
>>61572694
You realize that is not leather right? is this some next level shitposting?
>>61573647
Your wrist size doesn't increase with forearm size.
Here is the thing. Smaller dress watches look better and reasonably sized tool watches also look good. I prefer 34-37mm for a dress watch and 39-42mm for a tool watch. The sweet spots for me are 36mm and 39mm. My wrists are just over 7 inches. If you are a massive dude with 8.5 inch wrists you can obviously move up the scale but for most people the scale that works for me will work for you. If you have large or smaller wrists a mm up or down is probably perfect for you.. 2 or 3 is pushing it.
>>61573928
>Your wrist size doesn't increase with forearm size.
The watch is never seen in isolation
In RL we see a man's frame, his forearm and wrist, and the watch all at the same time
A big guy with 6" wrists will carry off a dinner plate Seiko better than a scrawny office cubicle nerd with 7" wrists
>>61569778
I don't have a wrist shot unfortunately, i got rid of the leather strap since i use that watch for sports and work mostly and metal works the best with that.
Finally got around to replacing the battery on my alarm chrono.
>>61574049
Can i get a ID on this watch?
>>61574049
the guy in that photo is well over 6 feet tall.. has a massive frame... and is on steroids... for normal people it doesn't really matter if you see the whole package. Your wrist size should be the predominant factor in selecting the best looking case size. I lift 4 times a week. I am at 1/2/3/4 in the big four lifts. ... This is me wearing a 36mm watch. My wrists are over 7 inches.. What looks better.. the watch in this photo ... or something like this.. >>61572795 ?
>>61573647
For me it is all about lug to lug distance. at 6.5" wrists I don't go past 48mm lug to lug. I can wear an SKX which is 42mm and be fine because the lug to lug is only about 46.
>>61574239
Yours definitely, but ditch the nato strap bro.
Aren't people really bothered on how it lifts the watch out of your wrist?
>>61574247
I should have included this as well. He is 100 percent right. I have a 41mm watch that looks like its 38mm just because of the lug distance and case design. The overall case shape also plays a large factor so the basic case width measurement is not the only relevant figure; my original >>61573928 measurements are just generalizations(they often work however).
>>61574270
I actually ditched everything on that watch but the case and movement. I got a 369 dial, new hands, and a solid link bracelet. Its a shitter to be sure but i wanted to see what went into putting a watch together and didn't just want to modify something. in retrospect something like a sarb 033 would have probably been better value for money but it was fun putting everything together.

>>61577931
> Would it be retarded to trade it in against a modern steel Explorer
That does look like a 1950's 1002 with an engine turned bezel. Is so then yes it's worth a lot. That could almost cover the cost of a Explorer if you sold it.
So honestly it comes down to personal taste. Would you be happy wearing a nice vintage model or do you want a modern bracelet watch.

>>61580286

>>61580286
Orient movements are reliable and come 9ut of the factory in good condition. If you service it every five years it will almost certainly last thirty to forty years; if you don't want to service it (which would likely cost more than the watch) it probably run for ten years without major issues and some indeterminate time last that.
>>61579369

As long as you don't have bitch wrists they are fine. A little sporty with the seconds hand being red-tipped and all. The 22mm lug width is also a little funky, but at least it is standard. I'd recommend avoiding one of the gold-plated ones unless you are likely to flip it.
Mine keeps pretty decent accuracy, around 6 sec/day.
>>61580643
The movements are good.. they look really good. But they are supposed to be dress watches.. they have red tipped seconds hands and are 42mm.. not really acceptable.. also lets see a nice shot of that watch your non "bitch" wrist.

I'm in an argument with a friend who swears mechanical watch's is a mature technology like firearms, I agree that until something like caseless comes along he's right that guns aren't going to go anywhere fast but watchmaking still has a ways to go given they don't need to strike a balance of standardized parts, calibers, prices and durability but I'm coming up short on what exactly has been made in the last 30 or so years to really be considered a massive improvement.
>>61581212

>>61581264

>>61581260
silicon adoption has been in the last thirty years.
MEMS is coming in the next thirty years.
I don't know if ceramic is really just a past-thirty-years thing but it's not very recent.
CSAC is just beginning to be available, though I acknowledge you said mechanical.
>>61581275
assemble what? what piece are you trying to attach to which other piece?
>>61581260
30 years ago movements had balance cocks and regulator arms and got magnetized, crystals were usually mineral glass or acrylic, bracelets had folded links, folded rattly endlinks, stamped clasps, lume was dimmer and radioactive with a short half life, chronometer accuracy specifications were looser, service intervals were shorter. Watches have gotten better and continue to improve, at least incrementally. Obviously there's not a whole lot of R&D poured into a technology which was made obsolete close to 50 years ago.
>>61581290
Silicon is manufactured using mems.

Personally I'd take the blue sunburst Oyster Perpetual 36, but any of the Rolexes would be preferable to the Omega Aqua Terra. As I've gone on about at length on these threads, the finishing on the Omega is frankly an atrocity for its pricepoint and the cuck-axial escapement is a serious downside vs. a 3135.
>>61578341
See? It's not just me memeing because I loathe what the Swatch Group did to Omega, the finishing really actually tends to be inexcusable for the pricepoint.

HA! I brought Shane that visor magnifier set! Shane had a bunch of old pairs of plexi zoom lens glasses (eg. 1.5x, 2.0x., etc.) that were all scratched to hell and practically useless, so I did a little googling and found that set for like 30 maple syrup bux.
>>61580971
Turned out pretty nice, right?
>>61581903
yeah it is a real shame about omega. ... especially because if their new movements had normal escapements they would actually be top tier. My shitter uses an eta based movement (2824) but i really wouldn't have minded building with a 6r15 if there were any nice cases available for it. The 2892 is pretty nice but i just fucking hate eta to be honest. Really wish i didn't have to use them in my shitters. The Sellita movements are ok but they are basically the same thing and its difficult to purchase top grade Sellitas.. I really wish more third party case manufactures supported seiko movements. They are slowly taking over the ebauche movement game as swatch is making their movement unavailable anyway.
>>61582026
Unbelievable. When I opened the box the padded envelope it was in had someone else's name AND return address on it. I was worried for a minute.
And yes I am very happy with it. He's done a fine job, thanks for introducing me to him
>>61582029
To be fair, the 2892-A2 in top grade form is one of the all time great production automatic movements and doesn't need any excuses made for it whatsoever. The 2824 and 7750 are pretty meh, on the other hand, and I would unironically take a Miyota 9015 over any 2824 below top grade.
The 7750 is pretty much a piece of shit and The Swatch Group should be ashamed of themselves for both discontinuing the Lemania 5100 and never even bothering to at least redesign the 7750 to use a vertical clutch.
I've never seen anything Selitta up close but my watchmaker considers the Selitta versions trash compared to the ETA originals.
As for Seiko movements, I'm getting increasingly annoyed that they've left the spot the 4s15 used to occupy in their movement line-up empty since the late 1990s. They need to bring it back or design a new 28,800 bph automatic with a micro-adjuster for the regulator.
>>61581883
I'd have to reckon in the 80s just like everyone else.
>>61582099
the 2892 is an excellent movement.
Seiko really does need to make an analogous movement like the 4l15.. you are totally right about that. The 6r21 for example is superior to the valjoux movement and i have no idea how eta keeps selling that.. or why they put a fucking garbage chronograph movement in the speedmaster. The lemania was a great rugged cheap accurate and indestructible chronograph movement and i have no idea why the fuck they discontinued... and all we have in that line is the 2009 C01.211 .
>>61581750

>>61582324
my word... its does beg the question why a Japanese firm would manufacture this? The movement is really accurate the dial and case design are nice. It hacks and hand winds all for under 200 usd... then they just made it massive for no reason.

>>61582658

>>61582658

>>61581290
that's just better materials and machining.
not much different than what happened to firearms.
the fundamental principals of mechanical movements such as Swiss lever escapement is mature since over 200 years.
>>61582029
>They are slowly taking over the ebauche movement game as swatch is making their movement unavailable anyway.
they are not.
Seiko sells several magnitudes less movements than ETA.
>>61574790

>>61584296

They will. ETA is dead (to third parties).

>>61584722
bullshit.
ETA just wants out of unfair obligations and let the free market rule.
http://www.reuters.com/article/us-swatch-movements-idUSKCN0Z61FZ
http://www.swatchgroup.com/en/services/archive/2016/statement
Seiko is basically non-player, which has neither the portfolio nor capacity.
To quote Reuters:
>Sellita, which is privately owned and the only competitor able to offer watch movements at comparable prices to ETA, last week declined to comment or provide any details on its business.
To quote Swatch:
>In spite of the fact that major customers such as Sellita or Tudor have reduced their order quantities for 2017 by about 700,000 pieces in total relative to the previous year and although the difference between the effectively-ordered quantities and the spare capacity amounts to almost 900,000 pieces, ETA must maintain the determined capacities for the coming years in order to meet its supply obligation as defined by Comco.
Tudor is going in-house, not Seiko.
Also Seiko is a public company, so just read up their reports like:

>Improving profitability through cost review in the watch movement sales business
that's not what you would say when you plan to replace ETA

>I'm coming up short on what exactly has been made in the last 30 or so years to really be considered a massive improvement
There have been a few things, though most of the dramatic ones have happened and are still ongoing in the world of haute horlogerie.
1) The introduction of 3D CAD and 3D Simulation to the world of haute horlogerie watchmaking is a massively important development that has enabled the flourishing of extremely complicated movements.
2) Multi-axis tourbillons and constant force escapements I think qualify as dramatic horological steps forward that have been developed in limited quantities in the last 30 years.
3) In the realm of production watches, the really big one is only just started to be adopted. MEMS technology is in the very early states of totally revolutionizing watchmaking in a way that most people really don't appreciate yet. MEMS allows movement components to be built one layer at a time at micometer precision in a much broader selection of materials that useable in traditional methods.
Just to give one small example: Grand Seiko currently uses an MEMS machine to make the escapements for its movements and this allows the balance wheel to be hollow and the escape wheel and pallet fork to be open-worked for reduced mass.
This allows their high-beat movements to use as little additional energy as possible compared to a 28,800 beatrate to increase power reserve and minimise additional wear and tear on the drivetrain. It also means that those components are made to micrometer tolerances and their balance wheels are absolutely perfectly inherently balanced, minimising the downside of a regulated balance vs. a free sprung design. If GS wanted to, they could pretty much arbitrarily switch to making all of those components in silicon instead (and I hope they do) to net additional gains in reduced wear and magnetic resistance. This is just the tip of the iceberg in terms of what MEMS can do for mechanical watches.

You are responding to different people. I was the original comment you responded to and was just reiterating what i heard. I believe the uncertainty is what is spooking some third parties and why more and more third parties are choosing Seiko and Miyota movements. Only time will tell exactly what will happen but of course the other manufactures have a lot of ground to cover. Sellita is a manufacturer of movements; what are they buying from swatch group? I read the statement i know it is a quote but i am just curious as to what Sellita is buying from swatch?
>>61582099
Sellita movements are actually rather well made. There are close up comparisons of them and Sellita has exclusive use of the better hairspring .
>>61585174
Actually, ETA has pretty much reversed course on parts availability to third-party watchmakers and sales of ebauche movements since the global slump in luxury watch sales has taken hold.
>>61587867
>Sellita movements are actually rather well made. There are close up comparisons of them and Sellita has exclusive use of the better hairspring .
Yes, I'm aware, i was only relating my watchmakers opinion, which I suspect may have been biased based on the issues with early SW200s
>>61587762
The entire movement
Good morning /wt/ what are you wearing today ?
>>61587849
Couldn't MEMS be used to make coaxial escapement mass produceable without the BS about still needing a tiny bit of lubricant anyway like omega currently does?
>>61587929
In theory, assuming you could find a material with enough flex to approximate the gold used by Daniels in his original design, yes. If the Swatch Group wasn't so contemptuous of their customers they'd be all over that line of R&D.
>>61587892

mems just stands for microelectromechanical system... There are multiple manufacturing methods for producing these "micro systems" Manufactures are simply using lithographic processes to make accurate parts from various substrates but typically silicon.
https://youtu.be/MZ9j-MYDs9Y
Seiko is not using any deposition methods to build anything one layer at a time. You can't even build parts like watch parts using deposition processes..

>>61590651
It's 5pm where I am right now so It's in between the sun and the moon. The design is fine imo, you can tell if it's day/night based on whether the empty space has sun rays (lines) or stars.
I do love the design it's minimalist and has date, day and month complications but as I did more research after I purchased it it turns out it has nothing to do with Italian and is made in Lithuania/Japan/China.
