I'm looking to buy a smart watch, budget is around $100, I want it to trach my health a little bit (i'm not a fitness nut but i like to know if im sleeping well) and I want it to maybe use an app or two for call answering and shit. Is this possible, or is it only a dream? recommendations?

As it so happens, I'm pretty autistic in my preference for watches so steel cased date or day/date watches with baton indices and dauphine hands is like ~90% of the watches I like.

Besides, Daini was always more obsessed with movement design anyway.

Except for the part where all the movements eat themselves eventually.

Yeah this is true. After hanging out here and then talking to other watch people you seem pretty cynical. Also isn't great when someone shows you their omega and you have to stop yourself from sperging out about their shitty adoption of Daniels coaxial escapement and sub par finishing.

wtf this is also an issue on the 2824?

Are all ETAs like this ?

I have a 7750 and avoid hand wind at all costs because it's an extremely well documented design flaw.

Will i wear it if given a chance? Sure. Will i buy it with my own money and put it in my collection? Hell no.

I have the 035 and an Explorer too and I just happened to post pictures of both in the last thread >>61531088 . is it a good idea to purchase a vintage watch ?

I'm very tempted to buy this Tudor Oyster Royal from 1960 ref 7934
but it might need some servicing due to its age

what alternatives do I have for a nice mechanical dress watch around 34mm up to 36mm in diameters (no higher) below the 800 mark ?
>>
>>61533619
I'm not familiar with that particular reference but that case looks polished to shit, avoid that one. You need to do lots of research if you want to buy vintage and not get screwed. It will absolutely need servicing and it will not be cheap, vintage watches are great and beautiful but they are not cheap to own. If you want a nice mechanical dress watch in that size then you'll probably have to buy something vintage, though.
>>
>>61533619
1 vote for vintage, if the one you planning to buy is in good condition, the service won't cost you much. Mine only cost about $50.

thx for the feedback, I have quite a small wrist around 16cm circonference but pretty flat, I kinda got tired of wearing big watches around 40-42mm and I feel like a good 34 to 36 mm could look really nice.

I have found some Stowa KS at 35.5mm they look very nice but also pretty modern as opposed to this tudor.

Also heres 2 omegas that have caught my eye, whats your opinion on them ?

The 29 jewel Poljot 2415 automatic movement is very high grade for a commie movement, because if this production numbers were low. Think of the "De Luxe" series as the Grand Poljot. I'd say $100 is not bad for a watch so sophisticated for its time. The only reason it doesn't use a Breguet hairspring is because it was meant to be very thin for an auto.

The WR of the classic 80's terrorist models is vastly understated. My F-91W passed 5 bars in a pressure tester. This goes for other Jap watches as well that are only "water resistant", my 1975 Seiko 5Actus with original gaskets also passed a 5 bar test.

But of course this is no guarantee, I believe these watches just aren't as vigorously tested, so there's no telling how many of the same model are watertight and how many are just splashproof.

For a girl maybe. My 1975 Seiko with a 7019 movement is 37.4mm and probably the same thickness, you'd have the same "problem" in the 1970's. Only back then the watch salesman would openly call you a peter-puffer queer and beat you with a rubber hose if you dared say the watch was "massive" (you don't seem to have this problem with the nigger dicks going up you ass, huh :^) ).

Nah, just dropped by at my local watch shop.

Tried a Speedmaster, Seamaster 300, and Pelagos as well.
Expected to like the Navitimer least, but ended up liking it the best.

Fucking spensive though. Even second-hand.

I was considering the Sinn 903 which is cheaper and 41mm, but after trying on the 43mm Breitling I think the Sinn is going to be too small now.
>>
>>61543614
The Sinn has (aside from the size difference one distinct advantage: it's actually water resistant. One small plus: caseback display.
Disadvantages are: The dial and chronograph second hand look too pedestrian without the Breitling logos and the bezel is now operated by the crown which slows down the use of the calulating, if you ever actually end up using it.
I also don't like how it doesn't come with a tachymetric scale.

Yeah, but that doesn't make any sense. It's hardly as if they couldn't design a smaller movement or dust off the 4s15 if they wanted to make smaller designs. I don't get it either. The only two things I'd change on the SDGM003 are have it be 38mm and have the movement be a 4s15 instead of the 6r15.

Why are there so few decent cheap women's watches? Women's watches are 99.9% fashion dogshit, even all the Seikos and Orients and lower end Swatch brands are awful flowery fake diamond encrusted shit. It's not until you get to like Rolex, Cartier, and JLC that you get some nice options. My girlfriend keeps asking me to recommend a decent watch for a few hundred dollars, but there's so few options. I think I might try to talk her into a Seiko Dolce or something.
>>
>>61546222
the 8l35 is a very good movement but its a high beat 6r15.. its not costing seiko much to make the damn thing. Its unregulated and the watch they are putting it in does not look like its worth 3500 dollars. Would you really buy that over a used explorer or a speedmaster or tudor or vintage rolex or omega or universal geneve?

Yeah something like this looks pretty decent, 34mm and pretty simple and classy with a nice low-maintenance thermocompensated quartz and diashield and sapphire crystal and all that seems like a great choice for someone who isn't a watch autist. $400 is kind of steep though and then on top of that the strap is absolutely disgusting so it would need a new one. I'm pretty sure Dolce is the men's line and there's probably a matching smaller women's Exceline but I'm not sure what the model name is, but 34mm is pretty reasonable anyway.

Tell them to stop being a retard with the size and increase the water resistance then i will think about it. 43-46mm case with 3 bars WR is a fucking disgrace.
>>
>>61553401
The size is fine, see >>61543407
>>
>>61553416
Nah, anything above 40mm looks gaudy to me.
>>
>>61553445
To you, or on you?
>>
>>61553458
I always like small tool watches like the 36mm Explorer. Those 41mm Navitimer look cool as fuck, just wish they stick with the 41mm instead of going retard with the size right now.
>>
>>61548789
I just don't find it that aesthetically pleasing but i totally get why you like it. The watch does seem fun but it just doesn't match my tastes.
>>
>>61553581
I have a 7" wrist, and after trying on the 43mm navitimer, I'm pretty sure the 41mm would look too small.

>It has no technical merit
except beating all your obsolete mechanical watches in every technical aspect

>over paying
you are even paying exorbitant amounts more for your luxury goods with outdated technology

fundamentally it's asinine to be willing to pay more for technologically inferior mechanical movements just because their production can't be as efficient as quartz.
normally production of inferior products cease when something better comes along.
the inferior product does not move upwards and becomes luxury.

most of your designs are from obsolete tool watches for work that you will never do.
in contrast, fashion designs do not pretend to be more than they are.

I'd bet good money the vast majority of fashion watches are a LOT more overpriced than mechanical watches are.

unlikely
quartz movement is valued at like $1
so the intrinsic value of an vastly inferior mechanical movement is like $.1

bullshit.
you won't be an executive for long if you don't know the difference between production cost and market price.
Swiss watchmakers learned it the hard way during the quartz crisis when they couldn't compete with US & Japanese quartz on price.
only a few lucky ones were able to move upmarket and be luxury.
>>
>>61555172
And you won't be an executive for long if you sell your product for less than the production/labor cost.

Stop embarrassing yourself.
>>
>>61555150
What is that
>>
>>61555242
The chamfering on the edges of the main plates that hold the movement together.

On something like a Patek, you'd expect those edges to be hand-polished, but you can tell from the repeating marks that they're just roughly cut.
>>
>>61555312
Oh these things. I see....
>>
How do you pronounce Jaeger le coultre
>>
>>61555357
Jaeger is originally a Germanic name (though the guy was French), Lecoultre is a French name.

Seeing how Swiss watchmaking is largely Francophone, you'd say "zhé-zhé luh-cool-truh".

that never was even an option

there's like two valid options:
a) cease production since you can't turn a profit
b) market yourself as luxury
most Swiss chose a), a few went b)
all in all between 1970 and 1988 Swiss watch employment fell from 90,000 to 28,000

Yup, the finishing on the top Seikos beats the snot out of a lot of much more expensive Swiss offerings.

I think you completely miss the point. With fashion brand watches you can buy identical looking watches with the same cheap movements, be it quartz or ETA copy, for a fraction of the price. You pay a huge premium for the name.

luxury watches with their same old conservative styles that have no function anymore are no better

if you say quartz is cheap value,
mechanical watches must have an even lower intrinsic value as they are technologically inferior
>You pay a huge premium for the name.
in absolute terms it's peanuts compared to luxury watches with absolute worse antique movements
in relative terms profit margins for both luxury watches and fashion watches will be about the same
