Bottom of barrel is a Seiko 5. Automatic 7s26 but no hand winding or hacking. Can get those starting at about $60

Also there is Vostok Amphibia. You get hand winding with these and a waterproof diver. These movements are not as accurate from my experiences but for about $65-$80 hard to beat.

Some slightly higher end Seiko 5's come with the 4r36 movement, which has hand winding and hacking. Good movement. These can be found for maybe around $150.

Entry level true Seiko diver is the SKX. It unfortunately has the 7s26 movement so not hand winding or hacking, but you do get a legit 200m diver with better quality control compared to the Vostok. Can get these for about $190-$200

Entry level swiss movement would have to be a Hamilton Khaki. Got a reliable ETA movement and can be had for low to mid $300 if I recall.

Some might not consider this entry level but I think the Seiko SARB033 is a great choice to get after you try out a Seiko 5 and like it. For the money you get a crisp design with great finishing and a good movement. I think it is the most versatile watch on my list Also mid to low $300.

Agreed on pretty much all counts. Don't forget that the 75x is a day/date version of the 56x. Also, while I'm partial to the 1045, I would avoid both it and the 321 unless you are prepared to spend on its upkeep as vintage chronographs are not exactly cheap to maintain.

I don't think there's really any bad ones from the 60s. My watch has a 561 which is very highly regarded. 561 is the automatic chronometer date version but there's also the 564 which adds a quickset date (you never realize how much watchmaking has advanced and how convenient quickset date it until you own a watch without it). The 551 is the same movement with no date. There's also the Seamaster movements which were not chronometer certified and came with or without date or with and without automatic winding.

I think they're all very closely related. Back then automatic winding and date displays were sort of premium upgrades so the movements mix and match those features on top of the same base.

Here is the thing. Smaller dress watches look better and reasonably sized tool watches also look good. I prefer 34-37mm for a dress watch and 39-42mm for a tool watch. The sweet spots for me are 36mm and 39mm. My wrists are just over 7 inches. If you are a massive dude with 8.5 inch wrists you can obviously move up the scale but for most people the scale that works for me will work for you. If you have large or smaller wrists a mm up or down is probably perfect for you.. 2 or 3 is pushing it.

I actually ditched everything on that watch but the case and movement. I got a 369 dial, new hands, and a solid link bracelet. Its a shitter to be sure but i wanted to see what went into putting a watch together and didn't just want to modify something. in retrospect something like a sarb 033 would have probably been better value for money but it was fun putting everything together.

Explorer.

I want to like the Seamaster but it's just not as good as it should be, I was sort of disappointed when I saw one in person. I guess as far as OP vs Explorer they're like 99% the same watch except you'll have to buy the Explorer used and the OP has a better clasp and a slightly updated movement. I just think the Explorer looks better, personally. It's a classic but also really timeless, the OP is more modernized I guess.

Orient movements are reliable and come 9ut of the factory in good condition. If you service it every five years it will almost certainly last thirty to forty years; if you don't want to service it (which would likely cost more than the watch) it probably run for ten years without major issues and some indeterminate time last that.

As long as you don't have bitch wrists they are fine. A little sporty with the seconds hand being red-tipped and all. The 22mm lug width is also a little funky, but at least it is standard. I'd recommend avoiding one of the gold-plated ones unless you are likely to flip it.

Mine keeps pretty decent accuracy, around 6 sec/day.

I'm in an argument with a friend who swears mechanical watch's is a mature technology like firearms, I agree that until something like caseless comes along he's right that guns aren't going to go anywhere fast but watchmaking still has a ways to go given they don't need to strike a balance of standardized parts, calibers, prices and durability but I'm coming up short on what exactly has been made in the last 30 or so years to really be considered a massive improvement.

30 years ago movements had balance cocks and regulator arms and got magnetized, crystals were usually mineral glass or acrylic, bracelets had folded links, folded rattly endlinks, stamped clasps, lume was dimmer and radioactive with a short half life, chronometer accuracy specifications were looser, service intervals were shorter. Watches have gotten better and continue to improve, at least incrementally. Obviously there's not a whole lot of R&D poured into a technology which was made obsolete close to 50 years ago.

Personally I'd take the blue sunburst Oyster Perpetual 36, but any of the Rolexes would be preferable to the Omega Aqua Terra. yeah it is a real shame about omega. ... especially because if their new movements had normal escapements they would actually be top tier. My shitter uses an eta based movement (2824) but i really wouldn't have minded building with a 6r15 if there were any nice cases available for it. To be fair, the 2892-A2 in top grade form is one of the all time great production automatic movements and doesn't need any excuses made for it whatsoever. The 2824 and 7750 are pretty meh, on the other hand, and I would unironically take a Miyota 9015 over any 2824 below top grade.

The 7750 is pretty much a piece of shit and The Swatch Group should be ashamed of themselves for both discontinuing the Lemania 5100 and never even bothering to at least redesign the 7750 to use a vertical clutch.

I've never seen anything Selitta up close but my watchmaker considers the Selitta versions trash compared to the ETA originals.

As for Seiko movements, I'm getting increasingly annoyed that they've left the spot the 4s15 used to occupy in their movement line-up empty since the late 1990s. They need to bring it back or design a new 28,800 bph automatic with a micro-adjuster for the regulator.

Seiko really does need to make an analogous movement like the 4l15.. you are totally right about that. The 6r21 for example is superior to the valjoux movement and i have no idea how eta keeps selling that.. or why they put a fucking garbage chronograph movement in the speedmaster. The lemania was a great rugged cheap accurate and indestructible chronograph movement and i have no idea why the fuck they discontinued... and all we have in that line is the 2009 C01.211 .

There have been a few things, though most of the dramatic ones have happened and are still ongoing in the world of haute horlogerie.

1) The introduction of 3D CAD and 3D Simulation to the world of haute horlogerie watchmaking is a massively important development that has enabled the flourishing of extremely complicated movements.

2) Multi-axis tourbillons and constant force escapements I think qualify as dramatic horological steps forward that have been developed in limited quantities in the last 30 years.

3) In the realm of production watches, the really big one is only just started to be adopted. MEMS technology is in the very early states of totally revolutionizing watchmaking in a way that most people really don't appreciate yet. MEMS allows movement components to be built one layer at a time at micometer precision in a much broader selection of materials that useable in traditional methods.

Just to give one small example: Grand Seiko currently uses an MEMS machine to make the escapements for its movements and this allows the balance wheel to be hollow and the escape wheel and pallet fork to be open-worked for reduced mass.

This allows their high-beat movements to use as little additional energy as possible compared to a 28,800 beatrate to increase power reserve and minimise additional wear and tear on the drivetrain. It also means that those components are made to micrometer tolerances and their balance wheels are absolutely perfectly inherently balanced, minimising the downside of a regulated balance vs. a free sprung design. If GS wanted to, they could pretty much arbitrarily switch to making all of those components in silicon instead (and I hope they do) to net additional gains in reduced wear and magnetic resistance. This is just the tip of the iceberg in terms of what MEMS can do for mechanical watches.

It's 5pm where I am right now so It's in between the sun and the moon. The design is fine imo, you can tell if it's day/night based on whether the empty space has sun rays (lines) or stars.

I do love the design it's minimalist and has date, day and month complications but as I did more research after I purchased it it turns out it has nothing to do with Italian and is made in Lithuania/Japan/China.
