seriously, why

they're ugly as fuck, they don't keep good time, and did I mention they're ugly as fuck?

do uggo neckbeard failures see these watches as a reflection of themselves? is that why BOCKTOK and PAKETA is so popular on /g/?

or is it a running joke I'm just not picking up on?

What can I get in Seiko 5's price range that isn't a Seiko?

Honestly I bought an amphibia to go camping and shit like that because it was cheap i didn't care about it and it is super waterproof. Turns out its so inaccurate its useless as a watch, the lume is horrible, and it just generally sucks.I returned it but i do miss it sometimes. It sucked but it was a cool object and it was cheap. Ill probably pick an se up at one point just to wear in the worst possible environments.

Hi
>>
>>61418422
I might have no taste but Seiko 5 looks better.
>>
>>61418180
The thing about shitters. meaning any watch up to 500 dollars is that they are disposable. Service costs are expensive. If you buy a sarb033 for example. You are spending 400+ dollars but the movement is worth the same price as a service. So its usually better to either replace the entire movement instead of having the watch serviced. If you can toss your movement out and replace it for the same amount as a service the watch is not worth buying. The seiko5's are literally cheaper than a shitty mass produced movement. They are mean to be disposable watches. It will last you a long time i guess but when its done its done. You don't get to keep it. Its not accurate or nice either. If you are poor buy a seiko 5. If you cans save 600 dollars don't.
>>
>>61418362
Well what style of watch do you like?
>>
>>61418620
Mostly simple ones, not something showing most of the mechanism in it. I was thinking of something with a blue face.
>>
>>61418718
Well if you are into a diver the blue Orient Ray II AA02005D is great value for money.

Hamilton has a blue dial field watch if you want to get something military looking and entry level swiss.
>>
What brands make actually nice rectangle watches? Any with moon phases?
>>
>>61418886
JLC
>>
>>61418886
Jaeger-LeCoultre has the Reverso which is the ultimate rectangle watch. The steel versions are actually affordable, but I prefer gold for a dress watch.

Vacheron also makes some nice ones.
>>
>>61418974
...And here's a JLC Reverso with a moon phase complication.

Man that looks stellar anon. Your exact watch is my grail. I think VC really nailed it with the current Overseas collection whereas I think they kind of botched it before, both from a design standpoint (as they look really clunky and dated) and the movement not being in-house. I love my Explorer II but it's a daily beater as opposed to an ultimate grail piece you buy for the horological perfection.

I agree with you on this one, although I think we are a minority in our preference for the newer model's design. I really, really like this watch and like the fact that it flies under the radar most of the time (vs an AP RO or a rolex) which is a key reason for why I like it. But I think than you should keep that in mind, because not a lot of people would appreciate shelling out £19K for something and not drawing a lot of attention from it.
>>
>>61418477
Pretty nice, I like the blue dial and orange hand thing gives it a 70s vibe. But I think it would look better with a different bezel and band.

most expensive seiko 5 on amazon.com is $625.

>If you can toss your movement out and replace it for the same amount as a service the watch is not worth buying.
bullshit.
most workhorse movements are cheaper than a service, for example all Tudors with no in-house movement.

servicing only makes no sense if it's the same cost as the watch.

how much do you think an eta movement and service by tudor's service center costs?

>>61420529
considering that both fast-beat movements and seiko are service nightmares that sounds strange.
>>
>>61420652
top grade movement customized by eta is easily over 500 usd whereas a service is going to be around 300.

>>61420652
I don't really like seikos but at least the movement in that watch is interesting. Having said that i would still never buy it. Its just the only one i would buy.
>>
With all this talk of service costs and whatnot answer me this. What is the highest grade luxury watch with the lowest cost to service?
>>
>>61420969
Its all pretty much the same. if its a top brand watch with no complications and its not a chronograph you are pretty much paying the same service cost. ETA's are actually typically cheaper to service if you are willing to go third party as everyone can service them. But spending 4k on an ETA based watch is sort of a waste. But honestly if you didn't care about resale then a second hand non cuck axial eta 2892-a2 non chrono Omega would probably be a good buy(if low service costs were your number one priority).
>>
>>61420020
Tudor modifies the movement themselves, you can't just drop in any other garbage base-grade 2824 from Otto Frei or whatever.
>>
>>61421011
>ETA's are actually typically cheaper to service if you are willing to go third party as everyone can service them.
bullshit.
Swatch hates third parties since 2016 and wont sell spare parts to them:
http://watchguy.co.uk/swatch-group-parts-policy/
>>
>>61420969
for Germany (and in German but table should be self-explanatory):
http://www.watchtime.net/uhren-wissen/was-kostet-eine-uhrenrevision-12-marken-und-ihre-preise/
>>
>>61421178
There are still tons of parts floating around but you are right that it will no longer be the case in the future... sort of... sellita makes the same movement and even manufactured the movements for swatch. They are still producing parts. Also certain third parties are able to get omega parts.
>>
>>61420969
I don't know about new watches, but I can say you'd better be ready to spread those cheeks if you want to get a 50 year old watch serviced. Omega starts at like $1000 for a basic service for a vintage 3-hand date chronometer and you have to mail it in to Switzerland and wait for several months probably. I ended up going to a third party watchmaker instead and it was still like $600+ and they didn't totally fuck up but I also wasn't super happy with how they did.

illegibility.

Hands that are thin and either don't contrast enough with the dial or whatever to make it impossible to tell time at a glance. If the watch has thin hands then they better be black and that dial should be bright white.

Legibility and accuracy are the bare minimums for me.

Things like a date window, ruggedness and a power reserve are nice to haves.

It's why I bought pic related over similar options in the price range. I can tell time on this dial from the other side of the room.

Nice watch and bracelet. I wanted to buy one but it only comes in 20mm. is that steel back hesalite crystal?

The movement is not interesting, the chronograph module is on the dial side so it looks like a standard 6r through the caseback.

Sapphire, front and back.

Every now and then I find myself longing for the hesalite, but then I remember how much tiny scratches bother me. I know that polywatch does wonders, but I prefer sapphire.

A bunch of people I work with wear Datejusts and there's a guy with a Daytona. Lots of Speedys too. And also a lot of terrorist Casios, I keep one in my desk drawer for when I don't want to fuck up my good watches.

I see Rolexes out on the street pretty often but I don't think I've ever noticed someone wearing an Explorer I. I would think it would be one of the more common models.

Why the fuck would you buy a $12 knockoff A168 instead of a $12 Casio A168 ?
>>
>>61422508
Yeah but you have shit taste so your opinion does not matter.
>>
>>61426247
The real ones are plastic. Are you retarded? Try reading the fucking post next time.
>>
What's the point of paying out the ass for a nicely finished watch when it starts getting scratched up the second you put it on?
>>
>>61426345
If you're using that logic, there's no point in buying anything, ever. Hell, just stop eating and breathing right now, you're going to die anyway.
>>
>>61426282
Ali "all metal" casio knockoffs are about 50/50 to get real metal, or a knockoff based on the same plated plastic as the A168.

Those that really are all metal tend to be zinc based and corrode quickly when surface plating is damaged/scratched and exposed to sweat.
>>

Sure, but they said they want a "metal" one. That piece of shit fits their criteria.

I've bought two and they are great daily beaters, especially for poor college students

>plastic looking bezel
in person they don't look plastic, it's a matte
>niche style, shitty homage
I wouldn't say it's a homage, never heard anyone describe it as such. Who really cares about style when you are looking for a beater, relatively cheap watch?
>looks small, girly
that is just subjective. It's a utility watch that is non obstructing and gets the job done
>shit movement
it's a shitty Malaysia movement, but it's still reliable. Out of the two that i've bought, it holds decent time, very little variation and consistent

tl;dr
I disagree

Mine was like $4100 with box and papers and everything, a very early 114270 with a P serial number. It was recently serviced, and I guess Rolex does a hell of a job refinishing the case because it was literally spotless even taking photos of it at high magnification.

You could easily do closer to $3500 for an 114270 or 14270 if you buy something in lesser condition from a private seller on ebay or something. And the Explorer isn't even the cheapest Rolex, Air-Kings and Datejusts go for $3000 all day long.

I'm kind of curious about that sheet of paper sitting behind the watch in that picture, though. That looks like it's the COSC chronometer certificate, but I'm pretty sure Rolex doesn't give those to customers so is it some unofficial thing? It's definitely not the original warranty page, either.

Afraid it'll get boring to look at after a while because of the lack of bling factor and flat crystal.

>Omega Speedmaster pro
Love the design.
The movement is definitely not as advanced as the other two watches. Also not sure about winding every day.
Probably the most iconic watch ever, and therefore the most common and least unique of the three.
>>
>>61434960
If it wasn't for the coaxial movement I'd say the seamaster 300. Given that I'd go for the pelagos myself.
>>
>>61434960
Purely my opinion
>Omega
Cuck-axial, if you willing to live with it then it's good i guess. Just throw a suede strap in to make it less "blingy"
>Tudor
They really missed for me with this one.
7 row of texts. What's next? TUDORTUDORTUDORTUDORTUDOR?
Piss yellow markers and hands
Crow on the left
>Speedmaster
This one is cool, although a little too big for my taste. Winding a watch is part of the fun, also the movement is a fucking tank, good luck breaking it.
>>
>>61435114
the rating in both feet and meters really takes it to the next level

next gen version is going to have a version of the text printed in english, french, simplified mandarin, and esperanto

>Cuck-axial, if you willing to live with it then it's good i guess
The specs look pretty amazing, and I'm hoping most of the known issues (regarding the cushioning oil thing) relate to the old ETA-based co-axials and not this "master co-axial" which was built from the ground up to include the co-axial system.
It also looks tremendous through the display caseback.

The Tudor has similar specs for its new movement, and a solid caseback may make more sense from a purist point of view, but damn it 3-4k is a lot of money and I want to see that 'spensive movement.
>>
>>61435311
>>61435305
it was a gift to myself for saving 15k
>>
>>61435319
Considering the Tudor is supposed to be a stealth watch a display back isn't really fitting. Plus Rolex is adamantly anti-display back, which I agree with.
>>
>>61435319
The finishing of movement on the Pelagos is nothing impressive that make you want a sapphire case back. If you have autism about it then just buy a sapphire back then replace it, i'm sure you can find one.
>>
>>61435353
>>61435363
I totally get that a display caseback is a cheesy thing to do, but it's still a lot of fun to watch that thing go.
And it's hidden whenever you're wearing it, so it's stealth cheesiness.
>>
>>61431340
This is what /wt/ has been reduced to. We now have some dumb fuck unironically shilling The Swatch Group against fucking Rolex/Tudor.

The Rolex 31xx, 32xx, 41xx and Tudor 56xx movements are all better than any movement made by the entirety of the Swatch Group. Not a single movement that The Swatch Group currently makes is even worthy of being mentioned in the same sentence as any of those, and that's not even to mention the towering difference in finishing quality.

Modern Omega is nothing more than 80% of Rolex prices for 20% of Rolex effort.
>>
>>61424548
I love rolex but do people really like that essay on the dial? "superlative chronometer" "officially certified". blughjhgg
>>
>>61427865
had this since the early 90s, left it somewhere and then found it recently. Just replaced the battery and a new strap. Fogs up though due to the deteriorated rubber seal but it works fine.

Fair enough, the faux aged lume isn't something everyone enjoys. I quite like the off-white of it.

>7 rows of text
Completely agree, it's unnecessary and ruins the aesthetic of the watch. However, there's not really any way to reduce that text, while also still clearly displaying WHAT the watch is. Not sure if swiss law requires shit like that to be stated on the dial, but it seems a lot of higher end swiss pieces like Rolexes, Omegas, and Tudors all seem to have novels on the dials.
>>
>>61435927
Afaik swiss law only regulates when "swiss made" can be put on a watch and the amount of jewels on the movement.
>>
>>61435927
Its not Swiss law go look at the big three... they have nothing on the dials.

Haha no what the fuck it's not legally required it's just stupid advertising. I think the most offensive unnecessary lines are GENEVE and OFFICIALLY CERTIFIED and the size of the SWISS MADE font seems to grow with every new watch. Putting chronometer and automatic (or ROTOR SELF WINDING or OYSTER PERPETUAL for special snowflakes) is traditional even though nearly every watch is automatic now. It's also kind of insulting to have to put the depth rating in both meters and feet.

Having an unnecessary amount of text isn't really a new thing, though.

pretty much. The 6r15 isnt even as accurate as the fucking orient movements. but the 7s26 based diver is more expensive than the ray ii? If you are going to be a nip fag why even buy a seiko? Seikos are cheap.. ugly.. and shitty.. why the fuck do people buy them? I think they are just such cucks that they want to punish themselves.

look at how wide the accuracy range is compared to everything else in the video. the 8l35 is similar tot he 125 dollar orient.
>>
>>61438478
Yeah, there's very little adjustment/regulation done to Seiko's movements until you get to the actual Grand Seikos.

Fortunately a lot of them are simply very accurate as is.
My green alpinist loses only one minute every month it seems, it's ridiculous.
