Story share: David Scott, the American astronaut of Apollo 15 who conducted the famous Galileo drop test on the moon, testing the speed in which a hammer and feather fall relative to eachother in the absence of air resistance, wore a Bulova Precisionist Chronograph. It was the first privately owned watch to make it on the moon.

I don't think I've ever argued otherwise, and I'm literally the biggest anti-coaxial shitposter on /wt/.

The problem is that Omega's implementation of the co-axial escapement is totally fucked. It just doesn't work in production movements and ended up making the reliability and serviceability demonstrably worse than an ETA 2892-A2. ALL of the benefits in the movement vs that ETA 2892-A2 come from better finishing and the switch to a free-sprung balance and balance bridge design. The movement would be strictly improved by ditching the co-axial meme and going back to a traditional escapement.

The crux of the argument, though, is that The Swatch Group will literally never admit that the co-axial experiment was a failure nor will they ever abandon it for marketing reasons no matter the negative impact on their customers. Such a stance is so profoundly contemptuous of their own customers that it's truly astonishing.
>>
>>61379244
I totally get this but is this still the case with the new generation of cuck axials?
>>
>>61377737
>micro-engineering
>>
>>61379268
Yes. Even if they have ironed out most of the bugs, Omega's version of the co-axial escapement does absolutely nothing to enhance service intervals on their watches while actually making them much more sensitive to prompt regular servicing and much more difficult to service correctly.

The 8500 with a Swiss lever escapement would actually be pretty damn good, but Swatch will never admit they fucked up royally.
>>

How much does a Superior Quartz with mirrion rittre metar rinks usually go for? Is my only hope of finding one on a Japanese auction site or prying it from the cold dead hands of some mummified soul?
>>
>>61379318
As far as I know they have not solved the need for microscopically precise amounts of oil to be applied to the escapement to act as cushioning, with incorrect oiling leading to severe premature wear, no.
>>
>>61379322
That is the kind of thing I would look for on Yahoo! Japan Auctions using a proxy bidding service. You'll probably find a way better deal.

I don't know man Tudor is pretty neat too in my opinion, I'd love to have a nice Tudor Sub or Oysterdate or Ranger. I didn't get to pick out my vintage Omegas, I got them from my dad.

But I guess vintage Tudor is just cheaper Rolexes with ETAs just like the ETAs of today while vintage Omega has beautiful copper-plated high quality movements that died out and have no real modern descendents. Also Tudor died and came back as a hot new cutting edge brand making great stuff while Omega died and came back as Swatch. So buying an old Omega lets you have the peak of the brand which will never be matched again, while Tudor still makes new stuff worth buying.

>>61381115

>>

>So buying an old Omega lets you have the peak of the brand which will never be matched again, while Tudor still makes new stuff worth buying.
Pretty much this, pre cuck-axial omega is pretty awesome
>>
>>61381258
Depends what kind of watch you want, I guess. I think Omega peaked in the 60s when they were on top of the watchmaking world and making the Constellation with the observatory on the back to rub in everyone's face that they made the most accurate watches in the world.

By the 70s quartz was beating down all the Swiss brands and Omega was circling the drain and putting out some real bullshit to try to stay afloat. My Geneve Dynamic is a cool watch in my opinion but it's also clearly gimmicky and it's far from the worst gimmicky shit Omega came out with in that time period.

50s and earlier is prehistoric shit. Stuff like the bumper movements are neat as historical curiosities I guess but good luck finding anything that isn't water damaged and beaten to shit and I hope you have a spare kidney to sell off to pay for servicing those museum pieces.
>>
So about to pull the plug on this then. Any red flags? http://www.chrono24.com/omega/automatic-seamaster-wristwatch-17jewels--id6598483.htm
>>
>>61381219
Not to mention that vintage watches in general have a unique aesthetic that a lot of modern watches don't have.
>>
>>61381344
I'm not sure about this one. The price is okay; quite a bit high but not outrageous. The case looks like it may have been aggressively polished, which is a negative. The 562 is an excellent movement - definitely stick to the 56x/601/613/etc family. The crown looks a little weird to me. The caseback has a a lot of grunginess to it. I'd pass and look for something else, but if you like it you'll probably be fine.
>>
>>61381390
http://www.chrono24.com/omega/constellation-168017-merit-en-bloc-vintage-watch-ca-1966--id6364063.htm

was also looking at this one
>>
>>61381344
Well at first glance the dial has been refinished and the case has been polished so it's definitely not a collector piece but it's not egregiously bad I guess. I'm suspicious of how corroded that caseback looks, the movement has obviously been cleaned up but did they really fix all the water damage?

You need to do lots of research yourself too. Nobody here is going to know exactly what every single reference is supposed to look like. You need to find photos of original watches to compare it to if you want to make sure the watch hasn't been cobbled together out of spare parts.

Buying vintage stuff without getting burned is a rabbit hole that goes pretty deep. I know neither of my Omegas is 100% collector quality original, and those are watches that have been in my family. It's even less likely on watches that have passed through any sketchy online retailers who try to put lipstick on pigs.

Tfw I won't be able to buy the only good looking Omega for at least ten years.

>>
>>61381397
hell yes. 561 movement, excellent case design. Constellation was top-tier stuff and the 561 movement is in line with that. The listing says original dial; I would have guessed refinished but I am not really an expert. Case looks in decent shape to me; if it's polished, it's at least not horrific. $995 is kind of a lot - I would expect to be able to land a watch like this for less than 700, if you're willing to put in the work - but if you're okay with the price, I think it looks like a solid choice. Crown looks okay to me.

>>61381492
Get the watch pressure tested and timed (in all positions) by your friendly local jeweler. But in general vintage watches (especially vintage dress watches) are not something you swim with.

>>61381397

Match NATOs to what you're wearing, you can get them for cheap from AliExpress or similar. Part of the appeal of NATO straps is that they can be swapped out easily and quickly without tools to compliment whatever it is you're wearing.

Few months ago, I bought a Sinn 556i, my first mechanical watch. I love it!

It was accurate with +- 5sec per week. However recently, it is going very fast, 15sec per day. What's wrong? Is it possible that it magentized somehow, even though it says it's anti-magnetic?
>>
>>61384502
>Is it possible that it magentized
Nah, if it did then the accurate would be on a whole another level, as in a few minutes a day.
Just go to your local watch repairer and ask them to regulate the watch.

Thanks! Didn't come to my mind to search for the exact model and problem.
So it looks like the watch has broken in, and I might just go to a local watch repair shop.

Or could I just send it to Sinn under warranty? Would they accept this? I'm in Germany, so this shouldn't be too expensive.
>>
>>61385003
If you want, but regulate a watch only take about a few minutes so i would just go to the local watch repairer and be done with it.
>>
>>61385003
Does Sinn even guarantee a certain accuracy for their watches?
Even if they did, 15 seconds a day is typically within spec for this price point.

That's part of why you pay so little: the watch spends very little time in human hands.
>>
>>61385029
Will do that, thanks again. You guys are great! These watch threads on /g/ have been helpful a few times already.

It's kinda funny that my vintage seamaster accuracy is better then a modern watch.
>>
>>61385070
The movements from the 60s/70s were some of the best, so it's not all that surprising.
>>
>>61385070
>>61385074
It's not that the movements were better, it's just that they were actually regulated.

In the really old days, movements were pretty shit but they were accurate anyway because people spent so much time making them accurate.
The "repasseur" (regulator) was just as important as the actual component producer.

Today's manufacturing techniques and computer-designed movements are so good that they basically roll off the production line within the +/- 15 seconds per day spec.

He means that this oil-less escapement requires oil not for lubrication, but for shock absorption. You see, Daniel's original co-ax movements had to be made out of gold, which is springier than steel and hence could absorb the impacts better. This was the whole mess of trying to mass produce this particular escapement: patek tried, but gave up, but thirsty swatch/eta persevered and though they have created a mass producible (ie. not made out of fucking gold) movement, it's held back by shit like requiring shock absorbent in the form of microscopic drops of oil, painstakingly administered by specially trained specialists, and if it's done wrong, it's fucked. Once the oil displaces over time and if you don't rush your shit to said specialists so they can re-administer the oil, painstakingly (and not for free), it's fucked.

All to no discernible end benefit whatsoever compared to the high end swiss lever escapements produced by virtually everyone else (see rolex's latest calibres).

It was a dumb exercise, and as that anon said, swatch has spent far too much money on it to turn back now.

Thing is, Daniel's idea is by no means bad, it's just not financially feasible for mass production. Perhaps new materials with similar properties to the gold will allow for it to be made cheaper in the future.
>>
>>61385486
Seriously how expensive is a piece of gold the size of a pallet jewel? It's a fucking Omega after all, it's not like they're trying to sell Vostok Komandirskies.
>>
>>61385554
It's not just the cost of the gold itself, but the precision with which it needs to be made. All the Daniels & Roger Smith coaxial balances are hand made to absolute perfection.

Have fun dealing with Sinn warranty, it's awful. I tried to get my 6060 fixed since it's got dust on the dial. The authorized dealer wants 100€ for shipping to Sinn even though I have valid warranty. I tried contacting Sinn and they claim that the authorized dealers can do this. Then they said I could send it to them directly but I still have to pay the shipping and handling.

It's not just regulation. Higher end production watches in the 1970s used to get quite a bit of adjustment as well.

See: https://www.timekeeperforum.com/forum/threads/adjustment-and-regulation.21105/

The best well known in-period example of what adjustment labour could achieve are the Grand Seiko VFA models from the 1970's which were warrantied to run +/- 2 seconds a day, a standard Rolex is only today warranting again on their new 32xx movements.

I have a 1975 King Seiko Special that was adjusted to similar levels in period as it was in the last batch of high end mechanicals being made by Daini Seikosha before the transition to quartz for all the high end models. Daini Seikosha lavished adjustment labour on this last run (hence the "Special" designation on the dial) as they wanted to leave a statement for posterity as to what they could achieve. That watch today still runs ~+ 0 s/d dial up and on the wrist, and would easily pass COSC chronometer testing.

How much does it usually cost to have a watch regulated? I think I have the world's worst 6R15. It loses about 60 seconds per day worn.
>>
>>61390283
You should be able to get a friendly watchmaker to do it for less than $100 assuming the watch doesn't actually need service. Have you checked the time loss is consistent in different positions?
>>
>>61390283
6r15 is a mass produced nipshipt movement that you can buy retail for 100 usd. They can be accurate if properly regulated but this level of deviation over a period is pretty normal. If the movement needs anything even a service it will be cheaper for you to just buy a new one and put it in.
>>
>>61390283
If cost is an issue, just /diy/ it. It'll take a longer period of time to get it right without a vibrograph (adjust it, try it for a week, microadjustment, try it for a week,...), but it's really not difficult, you just have to open the case and nudge a little adjustment arm one way or the other.
>>
>>61389744
>>61389831
solid gold hands isnt something unheard of in watchmaking, especially in 12k watches.
>>
>>61389831
All current production Rolex watches use solid 18kt gold (or platinum) for the applied indices and hands. They have been using gold since around the 80s. When tritium lume breaks down it corrodes stainless hands, so you can see in older Rolexes a clear difference between older models where the hands corrode and newer ones where the tritium lume breaks down but the hands and hour markers stay clean and shiny. Even stuff like the black hands on the Explorer II are a black coating over white gold hands and indices.

Rolex don't make their own hands either, by the way. There's a manufacturer called Fiedler SA that makes the hands for Rolex, Patek, VC, AP, and several other high-end brands.

There is literally nothing I like about this watch.

It's as bland and generic as you could imagine a dive watch.

Is 85 bucks for a service on a vintage run of the mill Hamilton, not including parts, a scam?

Kinda feel like it is, but the guy has a long time eBay page with great reviews and is an independent watchmaker. Has a site just for his restorations and they all look good, and what had sold, etc...
I don't think it's a scam to steal watches, but maybe he's just bad? I don't know. Thoughts?

I was planning on maybe buying myself something sort of mid-range but not too expensive after a month or two at my job, but then my parents wanted to give me a gift so they told me to pick out a watch.

What do you guys think about Vincero?

I'm not too familiar with /wt/ but have followed it some. Would love some input on this stuff.

Microtech Ultratech, seems to be good, though I don't use it heavily, just when I need a knife instead of shears while working as an EMT. It's an out-the-front knife, so carrying it out of uniform has the slight potential to get me in trouble. I oiled mine with M-Pro 7, which has been fantastic and long-lasting--use it sparingly, and work the blade back and forth a number of times to work it around, else it's a little too viscous.

The point is that all of those watches are the same garbage coming from the same factory and sold at a huge markup under all sorts of made up brand names. You can probably find your Vincero with an unbranded dial or with some other brand name on it on alibaba for a couple of bucks.

It's a good beater watch for cheap, I picked up a few of them--they're comfortable to wear and have a very low profile. One I gave to a super poorfag EMT student who needed a watch (told him to keep it until he could buy something better), and the others I'm probably using to play around with mods like oil-filled cases and inverted displays without fear of messing up a more expensive digital watch.

Patek exhibit was pretty good. Best parts were the older pieces - they had a John Arnold pocket watch, some other interesting early pieces - repeaters, a decimal time watch, a worldwide, etc. They exhibited a grandmaster chime and a cal 89. They also had some plexiglass dinner-plate sized models of a perpetual calendar and a monopusher, which were cool to see. I'd recommend it for the anyone in NYC.

pretty much every russian watch company put out an "amphibia" divers watch (Poljot, Vostok, Raketa, Slava) so those are solid, stainless steel pieces. there's also the poljot foreign series from the 50s which were russian watches made for the west which also has stainless steel cases and well finished movements.

Don't forget that the Slava Amphibia is extremely rare. Most numerous is Vostok (like 99% of all Amphibias). Poljot ones can be found but not very common with Raketas being even less so.

I like that, it has a vintage Seamaster vibe. I think on a black leather strap or perlon that would dress up quite nicely too.

That's mostly what led me to buy it. I paid about 35 dollars for it. I work in a mostly dressy job (no three piece suit needed, but dress pants and button downs are a necessity), so I needed something that wouldn't be too jarring or gaudy.
I only use the nato on weekends, weekdays call for the original steel strap.

I was thinking about buying a perlon, but it's much too pricy in my corner of the world. It would be more expensive than the watch itself.
