I don't think I've ever argued otherwise, and I'm literally the biggest anti-coaxial shitposter on /wt/.

The problem is that Omega's implementation of the co-axial escapement is totally fucked. It just doesn't work in production movements and ended up making the reliability and serviceability demonstrably worse than an ETA 2892-A2. ALL of the benefits in the movement vs that ETA 2892-A2 come from better finishing and the switch to a free-sprung balance and balance bridge design. The movement would be strictly improved by ditching the co-axial meme and going back to a traditional escapement.

The crux of the argument, though, is that The Swatch Group will literally never admit that the co-axial experiment was a failure nor will they ever abandon it for marketing reasons no matter the negative impact on their customers. Such a stance is so profoundly contemptuous of their own customers that it's truly astonishing.

Yes. Even if they have ironed out most of the bugs, Omega's version of the co-axial escapement does absolutely nothing to enhance service intervals on their watches while actually making them much more sensitive to prompt regular servicing and much more difficult to service correctly.

The 8500 with a Swiss lever escapement would actually be pretty damn good, but Swatch will never admit they fucked up royally.

I don't know man Tudor is pretty neat too in my opinion, I'd love to have a nice Tudor Sub or Oysterdate or Ranger. I didn't get to pick out my vintage Omegas, I got them from my dad.

But I guess vintage Tudor is just cheaper Rolexes with ETAs just like the ETAs of today while vintage Omega has beautiful copper-plated high quality movements that died out and have no real modern descendents. Also Tudor died and came back as a hot new cutting edge brand making great stuff while Omega died and came back as Swatch. So buying an old Omega lets you have the peak of the brand which will never be matched again, while Tudor still makes new stuff worth buying.

Depends what kind of watch you want, I guess. I think Omega peaked in the 60s when they were on top of the watchmaking world and making the Constellation with the observatory on the back to rub in everyone's face that they made the most accurate watches in the world.

By the 70s quartz was beating down all the Swiss brands and Omega was circling the drain and putting out some real bullshit to try to stay afloat. My Geneve Dynamic is a cool watch in my opinion but it's also clearly gimmicky and it's far from the worst gimmicky shit Omega came out with in that time period.

50s and earlier is prehistoric shit. Stuff like the bumper movements are neat as historical curiosities I guess but good luck finding anything that isn't water damaged and beaten to shit and I hope you have a spare kidney to sell off to pay for servicing those museum pieces.

I'm not sure about this one. The price is okay; quite a bit high but not outrageous. The case looks like it may have been aggressively polished, which is a negative. The 562 is an excellent movement - definitely stick to the 56x/601/613/etc family. The crown looks a little weird to me. The caseback has a a lot of grunginess to it. I'd pass and look for something else, but if you like it you'll probably be fine.

You need to do lots of research yourself too. Nobody here is going to know exactly what every single reference is supposed to look like. You need to find photos of original watches to compare it to if you want to make sure the watch hasn't been cobbled together out of spare parts.

Buying vintage stuff without getting burned is a rabbit hole that goes pretty deep. I know neither of my Omegas is 100% collector quality original, and those are watches that have been in my family. It's even less likely on watches that have passed through any sketchy online retailers who try to put lipstick on pigs.

hell yes. 561 movement, excellent case design. Constellation was top-tier stuff and the 561 movement is in line with that. The listing says original dial; I would have guessed refinished but I am not really an expert. Case looks in decent shape to me; if it's polished, it's at least not horrific. $995 is kind of a lot - I would expect to be able to land a watch like this for less than 700, if you're willing to put in the work - but if you're okay with the price, I think it looks like a solid choice. Crown looks okay to me.

Match NATOs to what you're wearing, you can get them for cheap from AliExpress or similar. Part of the appeal of NATO straps is that they can be swapped out easily and quickly without tools to compliment whatever it is you're wearing.

Few months ago, I bought a Sinn 556i, my first mechanical watch. I love it!

It was accurate with +- 5sec per week. However recently, it is going very fast, 15sec per day. What's wrong? Is it possible that it magentized somehow, even though it says it's anti-magnetic?

In the really old days, movements were pretty shit but they were accurate anyway because people spent so much time making them accurate.
The "repasseur" (regulator) was just as important as the actual component producer.

Today's manufacturing techniques and computer-designed movements are so good that they basically roll off the production line within the +/- 15 seconds per day spec.

He means that this oil-less escapement requires oil not for lubrication, but for shock absorption. You see, Daniel's original co-ax movements had to be made out of gold, which is springier than steel and hence could absorb the impacts better. This was the whole mess of trying to mass produce this particular escapement: patek tried, but gave up, but thirsty swatch/eta persevered and though they have created a mass producible (ie. not made out of fucking gold) movement, it's held back by shit like requiring shock absorbent in the form of microscopic drops of oil, painstakingly administered by specially trained specialists, and if it's done wrong, it's fucked. Once the oil displaces over time and if you don't rush your shit to said specialists so they can re-administer the oil, painstakingly (and not for free), it's fucked.

All to no discernible end benefit whatsoever compared to the high end swiss lever escapements produced by virtually everyone else (see rolex's latest calibres).

It was a dumb exercise, and as that anon said, swatch has spent far too much money on it to turn back now.

Thing is, Daniel's idea is by no means bad, it's just not financially feasible for mass production. Perhaps new materials with similar properties to the gold will allow for it to be made cheaper in the future.

Have fun dealing with Sinn warranty, it's awful. I tried to get my 6060 fixed since it's got dust on the dial. The authorized dealer wants 100€ for shipping to Sinn even though I have valid warranty. I tried contacting Sinn and they claim that the authorized dealers can do this. Then they said I could send it to them directly but I still have to pay the shipping and handling.
With a trash warranty like this they'll never be considered luxury

It's not just regulation. Higher end production watches in the 1970s used to get quite a bit of adjustment as well.

The best well known in-period example of what adjustment labour could achieve are the Grand Seiko VFA models from the 1970's which were warrantied to run +/- 2 seconds a day, a standard Rolex is only today warranting again on their new 32xx movements.

I have a 1975 King Seiko Special that was adjusted to similar levels in period as it was in the last batch of high end mechanicals being made by Daini Seikosha before the transition to quartz for all the high end models. 6r15 is a mass produced nipshipt movement that you can buy retail for 100 usd. They can be accurate if properly regulated but this level of deviation over a period is pretty normal. If the movement needs anything even a service it will be cheaper for you to just buy a new one and put it in.

Patek exhibit was pretty good. Best parts were the older pieces - they had a John Arnold pocket watch, some other interesting early pieces - repeaters, a decimal time watch, a worldwide, etc. They exhibited a grandmaster chime and a cal 89. They also had some plexiglass dinner-plate sized models of a perpetual calendar and a monopusher, which were cool to see. I'd recommend it for the anyone in NYC.
