I have Windows 10 LTSB and it keeps choking on this update. Even did the "manual install" that still requires you to restart and upon restarting it says "couldn't complete updates, undoing changes"

Why does everyone hate Win 10 so much?

Yeah it turns a bunch of data collecting settings on by default, but you can turn them all off.

It would be worse if they buried that shit in the terms of conditions, giving you no option to opt out other than changing OS
(Lets be real, 90% of people don't give enough of a shit to read about this stuff / change OS because of it)
>>
>>61400482
Because it takes all the worst features of windows throughout the years and amps it up to 11.

Can potentially turn itself into a torrent client service, where the OS seeds itself and windows updates to other users.
Comes with a gimmick called Game Mode that does jack shit you can't already do manually or causes game performance to regress.
Metro. Fuck windows Metro. Either get rid of all the old legacy icons or go full flat, faggots, not this half-baked touch shit.
Too fucking many maintenance tasks that are scheduled to go off when you idle for long enough.
The only good thing is wddm2.0+ and windows finally having a built-in virtual desktop feature that is still rough around the edges.

I'm making a simple program that will need a database.
The tables will contain no more than 40'000 records, but no table will have more than 10'000 records, I think.

I've used SQLite before but I'd like something that runs as a service.
What would anons recommend? My choices appear to be MySQL, PostgresSQL, MariaDB and MS SQL server.
Any reason to choose one over the other?
I value simplicity and ease of use over richness of features.
>>
So I have a project that I've been working on for a couple of months on Linux.
I just wanted to try it out on Windows and whenever I build it I get:
>redeclared without dllimport attribute

Is this some MinGW fuckery?
>>
>>61401005
MariaDB is basically MySQL compatible (it's a fork of MySQL) that's not sucking proprietary dick.
Forget about MS SQL.

Basically choose either MariaDB or PGSQL but since you say you value simplicity and ease of use go with MariaDB because PGSQL is a huge beast with a fuck ton of features and has a steeper learning curve.
>>
>>61401005
PostgresSQL is a favourable choice among the open source community.
>>
>>61401010
Did you write your project on a native Linux OS instead of the VM garbage windows 10 pushes?
>>
>>61401023
Yes, I'm running Arch on my desktop. It builds and works fine there. Then I switched to Windows 7, downloaded MinGW, built all the required libs, generated the Makefile for my project (using CMake) and it doesn't build and throws a fit.
The makefile, the source files, and the compiler/linker flags are exactly the same.
>>
>>61401010
Cygwin is better for porting applications from Linux to Windows as it puts its own DLL layer for your UNIX calls, where MinGW only uses calls that are also native to Windows.

If you're developing cross-platform from the start, MinGW is a good choice as it can have slightly better performance on Windows, but you lose some of the UNIX functionily.
>>
>>61401048
I am using cross platform libraries that work on both systems. I just want to build native executables on Windows.
>>
>>61401042
Better off with cygwin. It's what ricers still use.
>>
>>61401056
MinGW isn't as cross-platform as you'd like to think. Try building it with Cygwin, it's more Linux compatible.
>>
>>61401067
I'm not sure what's your point. There's no reason for anything to be Linux compatible. All of the libraries are cross-platform and built for Windows. There's nothing exclusive to Linux in my code nor in the dependencies. I just want to be able to build the project on Windows using Windows-native tooling.

thanks, I'll try both mariadb and postgres.
When choosing, are there some important factors i should take into consideration?
Maybe something you wish you knew before starting a project with mariadb/postgres?
For example, maybe the APIs for programming languages other than C are poor or buggy, or some other issues.

>>
>>61401094
I can't really tell because I've only used both adapters in C++ however as far as I know both of these are written in C and the libraries are native to C and C++ is just a wrapper so it should work fine.

As for either library, just a side note, look how indexing works, this will be important to performance when structuring your schemas,

>>

Build it on Linux. It will save you further headaches.
>>
>>61401147
you could just make a vm, or run your arch system in a vm under windows (if you're dual booting)
vm's are fine performance-wise for compiling, just give it enough ram and match your physical core count

I'd like to be able to continuously build it on Windows as it's something that I want to still to develop rather than compile once and use on Windows. How about a Linux VM on Windows? Could I just cross-compile it within a headless Linux VM even if it requires graphical stack? (Like build it, but then move to Windows through a shared drive and run it there).

>>61401160
That's what I'm thinking, I don't think I can run my Arch within a VM, last time I tried to boot it off a physical drive VBox threw a fit.
>>
>>61401171
>I don't think I can run my Arch within a VM, last time I tried to boot it off a physical drive VBox threw a fit.
remember to use the fallback initramfs, as your normal initramfs only contains drivers for your physical system (or more specifically, whatever system it was generated on)

>Could I just cross-compile it within a headless Linux VM even if it requires graphical stack? (Like build it, but then move to Windows through a shared drive and run it there).
yes, compiling graphical programs doesn't require that machine to be /running/ a gui, and you can just have a samba<>smb shared folder to easily share data between the machines

I'm learning memory management with an int array. Am I using sizeof() correctly? My realloc() works (even though it looks stupid right now) but the print statements aren't changing.
/* Takes a pointer to a list struct, which has *sortedList, which is a pointer to an array of ints.
Increases the memory allocation for sortedList. For some reason I have to use DOUBLE_NUMBER (equal to 2) twice for it to work.*/
void foo(list *ls)
{
printf("sizeof sortedList is: %lu\n", sizeof(ls->sortedList));
ls->sortedList = realloc(ls->sortedList, DOUBLE_NUMBER * DOUBLE_NUMBER * sizeof(ls->sortedList));
printf("sizeof sortedList is: %lu\n", sizeof(ls->sortedList));
}

(My bad if I'm a character off; I'm retyping from laptop to desktop.)

So when I run this I get the allocation I need but both the print statements say "sizeof sortedList is: 8". Any tips?

I'm not an expert, but I think so yes. It's basically the amount of time the program needs to calculate what to display on the screen. If that time is larger than the time between refreshes on the screen, it won't have anything to display.
However, you shouldn't need to look at rendering time directly, you can just look at dropped and/or delayed frames. Those should be at 0. Note however, that going from windowed to fullscreen and stuff clearly gives a stutter, so if you see it starting at a value and staying on that value for the duration of the video, then it's all good.
You might be able to get a more detailed, or a more correct answer over on the mpv thread if one exists. I've seen people saying it both matters and that it doesn't matter though. I'd just keep it at a value that doesn't increase dropped/delayed frames, anything more is likely placebo anyway.

My computer has been freezing a lot recently, usually lasting about 2-3 minutes and then resuming. I've looked in event viewer and I'm getting error 1014, which is related to DNS servers. I've tried the fixes in this article https://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/3336.event-id-1014-microsoft-windows-dns-client.aspx but it's still crashing. Does anyone have any ideas on what it could be/a fix?

It happens more often when I play video games but does happen when I'm doing non-intensive stuff as well.

I have an Asus Hero IV with 2x PCIe 3.0 x16(pic related). Currently I'm using 2x 280X lightning on crossfire but the gap between the card is less than 5cm which cause the cards to get hot very easily.(using NZXT phantom 530)

this might be more suited for /t/ but it is a really slow board so

do ISPs give any fucks about peer to peer downloads through DC++? I've been pirating some anime that I can't grab from nyaa anymore after it was kill, and it got me wondering how risky it is legally since it is a direct download. These servers seem like goldmines, and while there would obviously be honeypots and the typical shifty russian with 14 .exe's named after popular movies, it otherwise looks like a much easier way of getting free shit over torrenting, it looks too good to be true.

ISP's don't care, but third-party copyright groups might, and they are the ones who send notices to your ISP which then lands you in trouble.

I want to buy a used rackmount storage server, it's primarily going to be used as NVR for security cameras around my house. I don't know shit about this stuff so I don't want to be taken advantage of when it comes to price.

What kind of questions should I be asking the seller?
>>
>>61403015
I know this isn't the answer you might want, but just something you might consider.

When I built my first server I brought a rack and it was £500. When it arrived I realised it was just a load of box steel painted black. Next one I just brought a mig welder and £30 worth of steel. 2 hours work and I've got something that'll outlive me.

Do consider steel as the wooden ones are a bit flimsy, plus you get to learn how to weld. Mig welding is as simple as it gets. Good luck anon

Is there anything that would make linux distros in general cause a slight stutter or performance drop at times?

Let me explain. I used Windows, a lot of distros and hackintosh. I notice on linux distros in general (and that's with many of the DEs available, Gnome, XFCE, KDE, Cinnamon, MATE, Unity, even Pantheon) everytime I'm working with something graphical, be it watching youtube videos, scrolling through a browser, playing a game that could be played on a 2010 netbook, at times it will produce frame drops or at least noticeably slow down at times.

I don't know what produces it, but I don't really have this problem on Windows or even Hackintosh. I considered my hardware being the problem even under those circumstances, but I don't know exactly where to look since I changed most of my CPU options left and right related to power management (like EIST or C-States), in case that was the issue, and nothing changed.

My closed loop water cooler stopped working (Silverstone TD03). My CPU was getting really hot and the pump made noises like bubbles were in the loop. So I took off the cold plate, emptied it out, and the liquid was brownish and foamy with brown dots in it. So I flushed it out with tap water, then rubbing alcohol, then I tried to refill it with distilled water. I got as few air bubbles as I could in it and sealed it, and everything appears to work normally, I can't hear any air bubbles or anything. So my question is, am I fine with pure distilled water? Or do I need to add anything to prevent that weird buildup from happening again?

I want a way that when I am watching youtube vids on my pc and need to poop, to send a request to my android phone to immediately open the youtube app and go to the same video at the time that I paused it.

Due to the nature of this task, any googling results in hits that describe similar but not fully related things like 'how to video move files from pc to android' and lots of hits on 'how to cast video from phone to tv' but I basically want the reverse.

>>
>>61408829
The torrent protocol will find what works the fastest if you just give it everything. Also, if you manually add you'll need to count in the time it takes for you to switch torrents. In extreme situations though, having too much torrents will overload the router and shit, but that's with 500+ torrents or so.

Not sure about the whole gapps package but just the play store and their services framework and stuff is pretty much trivial. All you have to do is install basically any file manager (there are plenty of free ones to choose from on the built in Amazon store they try to force on you) and then install 4 apks that should be on one of the first results when you google install play store on kindle fire or whatever. Then just reboot the thing and all should work fine.

Used to be you could easily root it and flash whatever custom ROM you wanted, but unfortunately recent firmwares don't allow that and you're unlikely to get one that does if you order one now, but I think it's still fine as a low budget tablet once you've got the play store on it and aren't limited to Amazon's limited selection of stuff. You can also side load any apk you want, same as with a normal Android tablet.

Does Microsoft ever block you out of phone activations for stuff like Windows/Office/whatever when you've activated it too many times? Got an old copy of Office I got for free from my university back in the day, been using it on every computer I've had and let relatives use it too, long since blocked me out of online activation but phone activation has always worked fine with their automated system. Curious if one day I'll pass some threshold and they'll block that too though.

Are all the people that complain about this, living in more northern lattitudes where you don't need air conditioning? Because I live in Phoenix, and the outside temperatures never effect my PC because the temperature inside my house is pretty constant thanks to air conditioning.
>>
>>61409182
I don't run the AC all day or anything, I try to limit it since it will drive my bill up quickly. So the room with the computer does tend to heat up more than the rest of the house...

Will Amazon ban me if I buy 20 dash buttons (each on a separate order for the No Rush credit) and order one thing on each and then immediately cancel for the $5 Dash credit from each, and then deregister them all and never use any of them again besides maybe to trigger shit on my tablet with Tasker/notification interception?

I kind of did this when they were on sale for a buck each for Prime Day but now I kind of worry Amazon will see what I did and disapprove. Basically cheated the system to spend $20 and get back $120 in credit (though $20 is only for digital items and $100 can only be applied $5 to each individual order) but their terms of service do only stipulate that you "attempt to order something" with each Dash button so...?

>>
>>61409152
Wouldn't be enough to power an AC by a long shot. The amount of technology needed to incorporate that with normal power would require decades of use for you to turn even.
>>
>>61409257
I've only really heard of Amazon banning people for returning a shitload of things. I don't think they'd care too much about this Dash shit since they're basically encouraging it with those kinds of sales, it would be easy for them to set limits if they really cared to prevent it, and they're not really the ones getting fucked over since the merchants involved are paying them a fee each time someone activates one of those things.

Having some network troubles. My girlfriend and I have a sky router and a total of 4 devices connected. Each of us have a laptop and phone. On day out of the blue if there is more than one device connected then they all start becoming limited and connections drop on everything. Even logging into the router takes a really long time.

So far I have reset the adapters on each device, rebooted the router, factory reset the router, I had a look at the DHCP table but as far as I could tell everything was fine.

Any ideas?

Also, my cable from my PSU with all the molex connectors, has this what looks like a 4 pin fan connector on it. What does it do? My first guess is that it plugs into the 4 pin fan header on my motherboard, and then it controls the voltage on all the molex connectors on that cable so that all fans connected to them run at the speed the motherboard tells it to.

It's better to just let the drive do what it's supposed to unless you have a reason for such extreme use. If it spins up and down frequently, then it might benefit, at expense of the motor. Especially with Seagate, make sure you back that thing up as often as Muslim prayer.
