re-posting my cry for help from the old thread:

So I've got a bad journal on one ext4 encrypted disk. I want to dd the data to another disk to recover it. It's capable of unlocking, but not mounting. Should I run sudo dd if=/dev/mapper/luks-eac7b048-2581-4d92-a7c9-8803c2542bdc of=/dev/sdc conv=noerror, sync ? minus the question mark, or write the disk unencrypted?

I think the next step for recovering whines about it or something, idk

Sound the trumpets and the gongs, it worked! Grub doesn't detect the windows 10 hdd I never used which I literally don't care about.

Let's see if it dies again soon, if it does, I'll replace the mobo and/or disk. Hopefully this doesn't happen again though.

Had a working vga passthrough system. Until a few seconds ago, no problem whatsoever. Worked for about half a year perfectly.
About 10 minutes ago I started the VM as usual. I then went to the host's screen and did a bunch of stuff. Then went back to the guest screen: no output. Tried disabling vga passthrough: still no output. Tried reinstalling qemu: no effect.
What can I do at this point? A system restart didn't help.

Ranger uses the same backend (w3m's w3mimgdisplay), so if ranger works, this function works too.

Hey guys.
I'm in desperate need of a distro to put on my new computer, and I'm really frustrated.
I've extensively used ubuntu mate (liked but mate fucks up every once in a while), linux mint (don't like), manjaro (broke a bunch of times), arch (same), elementary os (meh) and briefly tried fedora and opensuse.
It is a powerful pc so it doesn't need to be lightweight, but it needs to be stable as fuck and ergonomic, basically a workstation.
I'll be doing a lot of programming and in-browser work, and as for gaming it's going to be little to none.
So far I'm leaning towards fedora, opensuse and ubuntu because of how stable and easy to use they are (I don't need extra steps getting in the way, which is why I ditched arch). I LOVE the aur but I don't really need it in the end.
As for DE kde, gnome, xfce are fine, my favorite is mate but it broke a bunch of times so not sure any more.
What do you guys suggest?

where do you find this stuff?
I've looked at man w3m and /usr/share/doc/w3m and haven't found any documentation that explains the input that w3mimgdisplay takes
>>
Sometimes in Ubuntu when I click with middle mouse button it adds 1~ 0~ to the text. What the fuck is that and how to stop it?
>>
>>61263171
I want to stop distro hopping. I know how to use them and I know how to use the command line. The thing you don't understand is that although I've fixed a 1000 problems on every distro, the thing is that I don't want to waste my time fixing stuff that should not have broken, and just use something stable and useful.
All distros are not the same, although they can be made almost the same. I just want something to install once and never have it break, freeze and need troubleshooting 2-3 times a fucking week.
>>
>>61263227
>the thing is that I don't want to waste my time fixing stuff that should not have broken, and just use something stable and useful.
Then you are using the wrong OS. Windows is for things like that. GNU/Linux is intended for hobbists only who have no issue with investing lots of time into fixing it
>>
>>61263227
for example, I had both manjaro and ubuntu mate installed. I used manjaro exclusively for a very long time, then one day logged in ubuntu, ran an update, and manjaro stopped booting because it has it's own fucking version of grub. Why would I want to deal with this shit if there's some flavor (maybe ubuntu or fedora or opensuse) that doesn't do this retarded shit?

>>61263253
You are wrong. Maybe it used to be that way when you needed to write your own drivers and shit but now that is not the case. A lot of working people use Linux now. It's not a special club any more. Don't feel like a snowflake because you installed something and then followed instructions on the internet when you broke it.
>>
>>61263188
How the w3mimg protocol works is hidden in the source code of w3mimgdisplay.c.

What are some cool terminal commands?
>>
>>61263467
I am not in a Windows thread. I don;t even have windows any more. The reason I had both was very simple; I had used Ubuntu Mate for a long time. I had tried Arch, Manjaro, opensuse and Fedora in either VMs or my shitty spare laptop. Manjaro seemed like it worked perfectly for my needs, but I can't know if I only use it once a week for browsing the web on a laptop, can I? So I installed it side to side with Ubuntu (which had all the software I needed installed, like Altera Quartus which is a bitch to get working properly) so that I could use it, but still have my working Ubuntu to fall back on since I actually had work to do. Manjaro ended up working pretty good in the beginning so I kept it, and in the period when I was considering formatting the Ubuntu partition, I saw 2-3 things break (but still took time to fix them since I really liked manjaro and was still about to keep it). Then I booted Ubuntu for some reason that I don't remember, I think I needed to run something I only had in there? and manjaro grub broke. I fixed it, and then a bunch of random things started breaking also. That is why I'm ditching manjaro. I don't know why I'm explaining needing to have a fallback ready to go environment to a person on 4chan, all I asked for is a recommendation.

>>61264646
It doesn't. You set the profile, and from time to time you add options to make.conf or to package.use/package.accept_keyword if you want special features. You do that at much the same frequency that in other distros you would instead bang your head on the table because vim is available with lua, with ruby, with python2, but only one of them, not all. Which is really not that often.

Compilation is handled by the package manager and is transparent to the user aside from the time it takes to compile (for small packages, there is virtually no impact, for large packages you're better off using the binary version, such as firefox-bin instead of firefox, since it takes so long).

Every other distro I have found was extremely unstable and often missing a critical package (rectifiable only by compiling from source manually - doable but a hell of a pain in the ass compared to having the package manager handle it for you).

a+b
is the same as
ab+

It made sense in the mind of Łukasiewicz because he didn't like having to deal with parentheses (postfix and prefix notation eliminates the need to use parentheses).

It makes sense in computing because computers do stack based calculation and postfix is roughly "how a computer thinks".
You put a on the stack
you put b on the stack
you remove a and b from the stack, add them together and put the result back on the stack.

Thus ab+

What's the logical differences between prefix and postfix? It's more complicated than moving the signs to the right than the left, is it?
>>
>>61266085
>It's more complicated than moving the signs to the right than the left, is it?
It's not, they're the same thing, the operators are just mirrored.

Łukasiewicz came up with prefix because it's what you would use on paper or on a board. You put numbers to the right of the starting point and operators to the left.
Computing uses reverse-polish (postfix) because you "feed" data serially, so first goes one number, then goes second, then goes operator which is it's own instruction that tells the computer what to do with what it has already on the staack.

Hi there!

You seem to have made a bit of a mis take in your post. Luckily, the users of GNU/Linux are always willing to help you clear this problem right up! You appear to have referred to the GNU/Linux system as "Linux", but Linux is just a part of the system! Whoops! Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. You should always remember to say or write "GNU/Linux", unless you are referring to the kernel "Linux" alone!

Now, there's no need to thank me - I'm just doing my bit to help you get used to your new operating system!
>>
>>61268049
No, Richard, it's 'Linux', not 'GNU/Linux'. The most important contributions that the FSF made to Linux were the creation of the GPL and the GCC compiler. Those are fine and inspired products. GCC is a monumental achievement and has earned you, RMS, and the Free Software Foundation countless kudos and much appreciation.

Following are some reasons for you to mull over, including some already answered in your FAQ.

One guy, Linus Torvalds, used GCC to make his operating system (yes, Linux is an OS -- more on this later). He named it 'Linux' with a little help from his friends. Why doesn't he call it GNU/Linux? Because he wrote it, with more help from his friends, not you. You named your stuff, I named my stuff -- including the software I wrote using GCC -- and Linus named his stuff. The proper name is Linux because Linus Torvalds says so. Linus has spoken. Accept his authority. To do otherwise is to become a nag. You don't want to be known as a nag, do you?

(An operating system) != (a distribution). Linux is an operating system. By my definition, an operating system is that software which provides and limits access to hardware resources on a computer. That definition applies whereever you see Linux in use. However, Linux is usually distributed with a collection of utilities and applications to make it easily configurable as a desktop system, a server, a development box, or a graphics workstation, or whatever the user needs. In such a configuration, we have a Linux (based) distribution. Therein lies your strongest argument for the unwieldy title 'GNU/Linux' (when said bundled software is largely from the FSF). Go bug the distribution makers on that one. Take your beef to Red Hat, Mandrake, and Slackware. At least there you have an argument. Linux alone is an operating system that can be used in various applications without any GNU software whatsoever. Embedded applications come to mind as an obvious example.
>>
>>61267686
Mint is the memest meme distro ever.
People install it because its #1 distro on distrowatch, without knowing that Mint gained that popularity by actually getting cracked by some script kids (search the web for " backdoored linux mind isos" ).

"linux blogs" fall for it and repost how cool it is, but the only cool thing, newfriends may enjoy, is cinnamon, which is a DE, which works on any distro.

>>
>>61268049
Next, even if we limit the GNU/Linux title to the GNU-based Linux distributions, we run into another obvious problem. XFree86 may well be more important to a particular Linux installation than the sum of all the GNU contributions. More properly, shouldn't the distribution be called XFree86/Linux? Or, at a minimum, XFree86/GNU/Linux? Of course, it would be rather arbitrary to draw the line there when many other fine contributions go unlisted. Yes, I know you've heard this one before. Get used to it. You'll keep hearing it until you can cleanly counter it.

You seem to like the lines-of-code metric. There are many lines of GNU code in a typical Linux distribution. You seem to suggest that (more LOC) == (more important). However, I submit to you that raw LOC numbers do not directly correlate with importance. I would suggest that clock cycles spent on code is a better metric. For example, if my system spends 90% of its time executing XFree86 code, XFree86 is probably the single most important collection of code on my system. Even if I loaded ten times as many lines of useless bloatware on my system and I never excuted that bloatware, it certainly isn't more important code than XFree86. Obviously, this metric isn't perfect either, but LOC really, really sucks. Please refrain from using it ever again in supporting any argument.

Last, I'd like to point out that we Linux and GNU users shouldn't be fighting among ourselves over naming other people's software. But what the heck, I'm in a bad mood now. I think I'm feeling sufficiently obnoxious to make the point that GCC is so very famous and, yes, so very useful only because Linux was developed. In a show of proper respect and gratitude, shouldn't you and everyone refer to GCC as 'the Linux compiler'? Or at least, 'Linux GCC'? Seriously, where would your masterpiece be without Linux? Languishing with the HURD?

If there is a moral buried in this rant, maybe it is this: be grateful for your abilities and your incredible success and your considerable fame. Continue to use that success and fame for good, not evil. Also, be especially grateful for Linux' huge contribution to that success. You, RMS, the Free Software Foundation, and GNU software have reached their current high profiles largely on the back of Linux. You have changed the world. Now, go forth and don't be a nag.

Thanks for listening.

>Linus has spoken. Accept his authority.
Linus Torvalds is a retard if he thinks we should refer to an entire OS by the name of an exchangeable kernel. The truth is that Linus NEEDS it to be called Linux. When the Tech CEOs of Apple and Google and IBM, and others hear about "Linux", they assume they are talking about the OS and not just the kernel. They then dump billions into developing "Linux" with the intent of improving the OS, but in actuality much of that money goes to over-developing the kernel (and thus the Linux Foundation gets a big chunk of that money under false pretenses). Basically, Linus wants everyone to call the GNU POSIX operating systems "Linux" so that his rent gets paid. He'd call your Android and Router and your parent's smartTV "Linux" too if he could get away with it. Linus Torvalds is a piece of shit.

Nothing. But I think the indicator only works if you have bash version 4.4. Lower versions should still function just fine in vi mode but the indicator won't show up.

Also, just so you don't waste your time trying to update bash be aware that the real indicator actually doesn't look as cool as in that GIF.
That animated GIF came from someone who made a patched version of it to allow him to change the position and color of the indicator by adding "\m" to his PS1.

But this is what it really looks like in bash 4.4 or higher.
Just plain white and always at the start. It's still nifty though.

Your GNU/Linux install can read and write to Windows filesystems, but Windows can't read or write to GNU/Linux filesystems.

So you'd have to dual boot first, then start up the machine in your GNU/Linux installation. Then copy the files over from your windows install.
Then you can delete Windows if you want and have GNU/Linux take up the whole disk, or keep the dual boot.

Is there ANY distro that allows installation over another distro while saving personal files (i.e. home) while single partition is used for the whole system?

You can boot into a live disk and use debootstrap/pacstrap whatever. I have only actually used an installer once.

Is there some kind of script that can go through you music library, read the metadata, and download cover art from sites like Amazon, Discogs, Cover Archive, etc.?

Musicbrainz does do this, but their musical database is incredibly limited, and the number of records that have copyright-free cover art per record in the database is like 1:20.

Packaged on debian and probably others to idk.
>>
>>61271546
Can you program? If so, use ffprobe to get metadata and the last.fm API to download covers... that'll be 50 lines or something.

I wrote one myself but my paths are all clean 'artist/album' so I don't need to parse metadata.

Just moved to a fresh Arch install, this is my first Linux install for a Desktop so I'm pretty new to KDE but I've noticed the scroll wheel on my mouse is a little slow, it takes a lot of time to scroll on certain items like the application menu. What I should do guys

I installed gentoo with i3 and alsa
I read that pulseaudio need systemd
should I try to use pulseaudio without systemd or stay on alsa?
>>
>>61272839
Pulse does not need systemd on gentoo
>>
>>61272859
"Prerequisites

PulseAudio uses:

sys-fs/udev and sys-auth/consolekit or
sys-apps/systemd"

"Using PulseAudio without udev/systemd is not recommended. It should be noted that this breaks both auto-detection and hot-plugging -- needlessly making your life harder -- as well as disabling ConsoleKit, essentially voiding the article. Please, if you have the possibility to use udev (and you most certainly have), just use it."

And? You don't need it. You're already probably already an anti-systemd zealot willing to make your life unnecessarily harder just to avoid using it, so this should be nothing new for you.

Having some trouble getting nfs to route through my firewall.

Using Arch, the wiki had me set up chains (?) for TCP and UDP, but then a lot of the other articles just talk about

its about time i start thinking about switching from 7, few simple questions.
1. my c: is 100gb, windows is 50, i think about shrinking it to 70 and install kubuntu or other kde distro on these 30gb, is it enough?
2. once i have a dual boot setup, how hard it is to reinstall win7 without fucking linux and vice versa?
3. how hard is to remove linux without fucking my 7 installation?
>>
Hi /fglt/

I'm normally a Debian Testing user running KDE.
I have 2 questions: 1 regarding distros and other regarding DE's

I've gotten pretty fed up with debian testing and sid, but I still like rolling distrubutions a bit more than point release distros. I've been searching and people usually recommend opensuse tumbleweed and arch. I'm somewhat familiar with arch, from reading these threads and I even installed it once in a vm with success. But I hear more and more people talking about tumbleweed. What's your opinion, and how does it compare to arch?

The other question is regarding lightweigh DE's for an old laptop. Since I want something that has plenty of features, pretty much everything other than mate and xfce are ruled out. Assuming that my machine can run both equally well, which one do you prefer and why?
>>
>>61274085
1. It depends on the software you install on your distribution, but given that you are a new user, it should be plenty enough. You could always shrink your windows partition a bit more, if you feel like you are running out of space.

2. Reinstalling windows will not fuck up your linux installation unless you delete those partitions (or format the entire disk, etc). But, it will fuck up yout bootloader, but that can be fixed fairly easily, just make sure to have a liveCD/liveUSB nearby, and search for reinstalling your bootloader (hint: you will be probably using grub as your bootloader, since it is the one used in bios/mbr systems, and also supports gpt/uefi, but it'd be nice if you check wether your device has an uefi or a bios, and in which mode is windoes 7 installed. But usually windows 7 defaults to bios or (legacy bios in an uefi system)

Reinstalling linux, on the other hand, will not fuck up your windows installation, nor your bootloader.

3. Fairly easy

Why is mpd + ncmpcpp not working?

I have mpd running as my own user so permissions aren't a problem, and I can even see in my mpd log file that it adds all my music, so it is finding them correctly and able to read it.

ncmpcpp says it connects, and I also see mpd print a message (in --no-daemon mode) that it has been connected to.
Yet it always shows 0 songs. I did press "u" to update, and like I said I can confirm that mpd has indeed updated and added all my music. Why the fuck would I be seeing 0 items in ncmpcpp?
>>
>>61275100

Did you configure ncmpcpp with the music library location?
>>
How do you copy and paste in a terminal emulator like urxvt or in the virtual console when xorg isn't turned on because pressing ctrl + c and ctrl + v doesn't work.
>>
>>61275145
No, you mean mpd? I thought ncmpcpp was just a client that connected to mpd so only mpd had to know where my music is
>>
>>61273707

Took me 5 seconds to figure out why.
Here are some keywords to get your started: trackpad input driver, synaptics, libinput, xorg configuration file, synaptics or libininput option
>>
>>61275145
>>61275167
but yes, I've configured mpd with my music location. It has to be right otherwise I wouldn't see it adding all of my music in my log file.

No, yo uhave to specify your library location in ncmpcpp's configuration as well.

Actually, upon inspecting it, it's only needed for the tag editor to apparently work. I don't know, it wouldn't hurt.
Try a different client to make sure it's an ncmpcpp config issue.

NotoSansCJKjp is one of the best. It can actually compete with Meiryo at really small font sizes and looks much better and more natural at normal sizes in my opinion.

Although it always seemed to have really huge and ugly line spacing for some reason (pic related, on the right). I think a lot of new fonts are doing this now and I don't know why, but there's an older version of it that was built with a smaller line spacing, so that's what I've been using

If you don't mind having microsoft fonts installed then Meiryo is still good to have on hand as it's sort of becoming a "standard" for japanese fonts, also MSPGothic which was the previous standard.
>>
install systemd
>>
>>61275856
>>61276079
Oh, also some good replacements for MSPGothic which also display SJIS text art perfectly are:
Mona, Textar, Monapo, and Konatu.
IPAMonaPGothic is another really good one, but doesn't always render text art perfectly.
>>
>>61276079
WenQuanYi Bitmap Song plays nice with other bitmap fonts like Terminus.
>>
>>61276140
I liked that one too but I think it's made for Chinese. Which I guess that anon might be fine with since he didn't specify.
But people should be aware that there are a few characters in Chinese and Japanese fonts which use the same exact unicode code points and will look different depending on which language your font is made for.
So if you're more interested in properly displaying Japanese text I wouldn't use that one. IPAMonaPGothic plays really nice with terminus too. Shows up nice and big
>>
>>61276177
Thanks
>>
>>61276177
>>61276203
and yes I mean "IPAMonaPGothic", not "IPAMonaGothic". Ironically the proportional width one looks better in the terminal as a fallback than the monospaced one does.

It has the same problem as this though: >>61276177

I think it leans more toward the Chinese side? Not completely sure.
But it doesn't matter anyway because it looks like complete ass. The creator of the font himself said nobody should ever have to use his font. It's purpose is basically just so you can see what you're actually missing instead of just seeing a bunch of squares.
