so i've been using gnu/linux for around two months now. i started by installing mint on my desktop and then after about 2 weeks i decided i would install arch on my laptop because i wanted to learn a bit more about how everything works. i've got everything about set up on my laptop but when i went to install arch on my desktop (setting up dual boot again because gaym) i realized that i really don't want to go through all of the steps again to get everything working exactly as i want.
so, if i want to keep using pacman and the aur, which arch derivative would you guys recommend? the two i'm aware of are manjaro and antergos but i've heard quite a bit of bad about manjaro and i know nothing about antergos.

Reminds me of a story.

I'm a paramedic, my first "in the field" job was when I was still at uni in a private transport ambulance as a driver (three people squad, two paramedics me and a girl and a physician). The company mostly did contract stuff for inter-hospital transport.

Forementioned physician was absolutely one of the fucking dumbest people I know. Grey hair, glasses, half deaf.
The last time he worked in an ambulance was in the early 90s and the first question he asked when he "where the fuck is pavulon" which was the drug paramedics from our city used to kill their patients in the early 2000 to "sell" the bodies too funeral homes and has been pretty much outlawed and replaced by less dangerous succinycholine in case we need were to perform rapid sequence intubation.

So we got a call from a retirement home, we go there, the fucking dumbass walks to the patient and starts """"""""auscultating""""""" the woman with the stethoscope still on his fucking neck. After that he says "those lungs sure sound bad".
We looked with the girl at eachother like we're in some parody universe but nigger is told nigger must do.
We loadead her up, dump at the hopistal, chest X-ray results come in and bam.

He was right. Fucking pneumonia.
How nigger. How

I'm running Debian 10 buster (testing) right now and I'm wondering if there's any reason not to dist-upgrade to sid? Because I can deal with some of my programs breaking, I just don't want that kind of shit at the system level.

Save this somewhere in your path as "pornhub", but replace the category number with your preferred category.
It's not perfect, because it also takes into consideration some random videos that show up on the category page. I'll fix it tomorrow.

#!/usr/bin/env python3

import urllib.request
import random
import re

WEBSITE = "https://www.pornhub.com"
# category 27 is lesbian
CATEGORY = "27"

def get_category_html():
url = "{}/video?c={}".format(WEBSITE, CATEGORY)
response = urllib.request.urlopen(url)
html = response.read().decode()
return html

def get_video_IDs(html):
results = re.findall("\/view_video\.php\?viewkey=.*?(?=\")", html)
return results

html = get_category_html()
video_IDs = get_video_IDs(html)

random_video = random.choice(video_IDs)
print("{}{}".format(WEBSITE, random_video))

Then just do
mpv $(pornhub)

I don't think there's much to talk about really, it's mostly visually intensive stuff and I very rarely take pictures (mostly as evidence to protect myself in case some idiot had an idea to sue me for whatever reasons).

There was one guy who took a heavy hit on one of these "designer drugs" and deluded himself that there's a squirrel in his abdomen. So he took a pair of fucking scissors, cut himself wide open and ripped his intestines together with the mesentery in an attempt to "get it out".
People really underestimate how dangerous these things are to your brain.

>>
>>61278855
Nowhere near being the worst.

My first GNU/Linux adventure was installing debian.
My wifi didn't work (didn't have a flash stick large enough to fit full DVD at hand) so I had to resort to ethernet.
Installed the system, started researching how to install intel wlan drivers. After some time stumbled on the relevant page and installed iwlwifi firmware.
Didn't fucking work. Reboots, driver reinstalls, disabling/enabling modules all assortment of stupid shit that your average drooling normie does when "computer no worky worky" in hope that in a Windows-style fashion it miraculously starts working.

After a solid 2 hours of frantically trying to figure out what's wrong I noticed that the wlan switch was in the "off" position.

>Do you get motorcyclists and how many of the shrekt ones don't wear proper gear?
At the speeds those guys usually have an accident no gear is going to save you.

We had one guy who lost control, fell of the bike and with his momentum "slid" towards a car with opened driver door and hit on the sharp edge of door with his neck cutting his larynx in half. He survived, though lost his voice completely.

Plus I've heard that people who treat motorcycle racing (street fighters?) seriously here have a suicidal culture of putting a music wire in a loop around their necks so when they fall down it decapitates them. But I've seen only one case and that was only picture made my a friend. Sheared clean off. Haven't seen one in person, so could be just one retard who took a meme to reality so can't confirm really. Maybe an urban legend.

During summer practices (at uni) an ambulance brought a guy with a his forearm cut off. Clean.
He cut it off himself with a table saw, cause he had suffered from psychosomatic pain in his arm for months and all the physicians did was prescribe some painkillers (doesn't fucking work since it's not actually a real pain).
Imagine the look on his face when he learned his arm will not be replantated because amputation due to self-harm is a clear contraindication to such intervention.

Wouldn't it be ironic if after all of this he was left with phantom pain in the arm he amputated himself?

Possibly -movflags and +faststart
but I don't know if I've ever really noticed much of a difference with them

Also you want to use -crf and let the bitrate be the maximum as specified here under "variable bitrate":
https://trac.ffmpeg.org/wiki/Encode/VP8

Although personally I think I've noticed that the bitrate in that case isn't just a cutoff if the bitrate is set unecessarily high the filesize can get very large without any quality increase.
Usually what I do is encode it with a very high bitrate and watch what bitrate values it reports while doing the encoding. Then re-encode it with the bitrate set around those values.
This method seems to produce fairly high quality webms at good file size

Of course there's free software enthusiasts in Japan.

In fact, I might go so far as to say that free software has had a bigger hobbyist following in Japan for longer than GNU was even a thing. The Japs fucking love NetBSD. Japanese culture is really conducive to meticulous consumption of really niche things, like computers, even back when consumer electronics were relegated to the back of supermarkets and appliance stores.

I gave Linux a shot for 3 weeks but I just couldn't get over UI and font rendering issues. :(

KDE and lots of Java applications had font rendering issues. Some of them I could resolve, jumping through hoops, others I couldn't.
Gnome had less (no?) font rendering issues at least with what I tried using on it. But it was slow as shit with powerful hardware, buggy as fuck, and just plain weird.

Maybe in a few years, I'll be able to replace my main desktop with a KDE based one or similar. But nope, not now.

rm "Code Composer Studio 7.1.0.desktop"

Note the quotes around the filename or else the shell thinks you are passing 4 different arguments because of the spaces!
>>
>>61282564
2 things anon.

1) In the terminal whitespace separates parameters. That's why the command thought you were trying to remove 4 separate things instead of 1 item. To specify a single parameter that contains whitespace you either put backslashes before the whitespace like:
>Code\ Composer\ Studio\ 7.1.0.desktop
Or you use quotes
>"Code Composer Studio 7.1.0.desktop"

2) Use tab completion. Seriously, it'll save you tons of time.
Just type "rm Code" and then hit TAB and it will automatically fill in the right file name complete with the escape sequences for the whitespace.

>At the speeds those guys usually have an accident no gear is going to save you.
Yes, though it seems to me like that if someone's the kind of person who isn't serious about doing all they can to ensure a minimum of safety on their bikes, they're more likely to a) go way faster than they should be and b) get into situations where they'll lose control.
I got really lucky in the one accident I've had so far and only had a minor fracture in my foot, aside from bruises. Turns out even cheap gear goes a long way towards keeping your body intact, even when you do run into the side of a truck at 60. (though admittedly I did bounce off its tire; gear wouldn't have helped against getting shredded in between the tires)

>motorcycle [street] racing
Yeah, those are the types of guys who I expect to not wear gear and to crash. Complete retards IMO but at least with the piano wire they wouldn't regret it for long. Not really a nice sight for the paramedics though, I'll bet.

UEFI boot from your machine as follows:

Download the distro bootloader
Download RUFUS
Create bootable USB from the bootloader you downloaded
Go to recovery options (as admin)
Select advanced startup
Choose to boot from USB
Select your newly minted bootable usb
Machine will restart and boot from the Linux bootloader

It is not hard. It is just a little different as it is hard to get to the BIOS from a normal startup. If anything it is easier/ more comfortable for the casual user as you don't have to use the scary bios.

I have a 128gb SSD(called p) and a 500gb HDD(called q). Kubuntu installed on p.

Using Kde Partition Manager, I managed to change q's file system to ext4 and mount point to /home/danny/Storage.

q is showing free space of 91gb. I think its the free space from before installing Kubuntu. I'm trying to unmount and delete it and set it up again but I'm unable to.

Can someone please tell me how to format this HDD, q, completely and make all of its space usable?

Details:
Kubuntu 17.04.
Installed over Windows 8.1.
q was ntfs
I picked lvm with encryption during installation on p.

I tried mounting it and then un-mounting it but Kde partition manager does not let me delete it. All option other than resize, and unmount, are greyed out.
And I don't know how to use the "keyctl unlink" option even after reading the help it provide in bash.

Some other things you might want to consider:

1) Switch to Wayland early instead of xorg-server. Wayland is the future of GNU/Linux anyway, it's just very new so adoption will be slow. I haven't tried it myself yet.

2) If you're not much of a gamer, or at least if you don't play newer or graphically intensive games, you can try the open source nvidia drivers.

A 3rd option might be to try both simultaneously. Wayland + open source drivers. Not sure which way would be better for tearing.

I'm sure this is covered in multiple posts online but clearly I need it explained in a different way even though I have nearly a decade of experience with Linux distros.
I cannot for the life of me get a dual boot to work on my UEFI computer. Up until recently I had only used classic BIOS and Windows 7 which is trivial to dual boot.
I keep trying to install a Linux distro on my 64gb SSD while I have Windows 10 on my 500gb SSD. Everytime I install a distro to the 64gb it will work on first boot but once I go into windows and reboot once again it just goes back to booting directly into windows and I can't get back into the linux installation.
This has happened with an arch install and even ubuntu(I tried it because I thought maybe it would handle it automatically).
What am I doing wrong? How do I make this work?
Thank you for your time friendly linux wizards.

That'll still treat filenames with whitespace as separate files, and also it will pick up directories.

I've been trying to come up with something that'll still give them file extensions, but it's pretty difficult to do it perfectly, you wouldn't think so.
But anyway here's one that should work but without giving the files any extensions, and will only rename files in the current directory. Remove -maxdepth 1 if you want to go deeper
find . -maxdepth 1 -type f -print0 | while IFS= read -r -d '' file; do i=`printf '%s\n' "$file"`; mv "${i}" "`sha256sum "${i}" | awk '{print $1;}'`"; done

Trying to install Arch on my laptop, running into an issue with DNS
drill www.google.com works perfectly fine, but I can't ping www.google.com
However I can still ping 8.8.8.8
Unless I'm misreading or overlooking something I can't find the answer in the wiki

This has nothing to do w/ hibernation, as I don't use that in my win10 install, and I did turn off the fast boot option that might cause this.

After unplugging all the drives except the SSD I want to install it on, I still get the same error.

See this image for specs (only Corsair drive is connected): >>61292060

It's telling you that I should quote the command substitution. But the command substitution will never contain any white-spaces anyway so it doesn't matter.
>Use $(..) instead of legacy `..`.
AFAIK $(..) isn't posix conform
>SC2039: In POSIX sh, echo flags are undefined.
Ok, a solution would probably be to write /bin/echo to stop it from using the the shell build-in or to use printf. But I only recently started learning scripting and really can't be arsed into reading up on printf

resolvconf.conf is used by other services,more importantly it sets resolv.conf.

Set your setting you have set it resolv.conf in to resolvconf.conf

It does.

It is preferred.

Why should I quote a string that never contains white-spaces and consists only out of numbers and the letters from a to f?

I don't see where you read in there that it would be preferred?

Oh cool. Thanks. So it works just like the C library function?

Ahh ok thanks man.
To be honest I mostly used the back tick version because vim would highlight the $() version in red when writing in sh.

actually would use w3m again if it wasn't for other media, such as the aforementioned youtube & other streaming sites

also windows 10 updates sometimes break grub

>>61295242
please learn how package managers work
not all distros bloat their packages up like arch, so on ubuntu, it may happen that you get 15 packages for something that is covered on arch in one package
1k packages for ubuntu is pretty low
