Just get another membrane keyboard if they have lasted you like 6 years. I'm typing on a btc full size keyboard right now and I think it is on a similar level to topre. Don't see me replacing it any time soon despite the fact the key caps have yellowed quite significantly.
>>
>>61234996
I considered that but I've typed on mech keyboards before and i love how they feel compared to membrane keyboards, only thing that stopped me from upgrading before was that I don't like spending money when the one I have works. Since it doesn't work anymore it gives me an excuse to upgrade

fight over your switch colors, plebs, while my finger muscles grow pounding away at these buckling springs
>>
>>61234959
Thanks, had a look at this one before, considering it
>>
>>61235043
Well I hope you get a board that is perfect for you. I personally have spend a few thousand on different keyboards yet i keep going back to rubber domes. both in the form of topre or btc with slider. I absolutely love the feel of them boards. Even the standard BTC rubber dome keyboards without silders are pretty great. They are vastly superior to cherry mx brown anyway.
>>
>>61235045
Woah that's fucking awesome, think I'll order a blue key set from unicomp. How is the trackball?
>>
>>61235131
it's pretty bad, honestly
>>

But you don't have muscles in your fingers anon, its all in the wrist.
>>
>>61234781
Why aren't more of you guys shilling high quality keycaps (SA in particular)? I had no idea the difference was THIS HUGE. Wtf, this typing experience is just insane, way bigger than the transition from rubber dome to mechanical, and I haven't really heard that reiterated much in the community in general.

no seriously don't get this. Their build quality has gone down over the years. They are now considered flimsy garbage with pad printed keycaps.

Get a Ducky for that price. A cheaper option would be a Corsair Strafe. Cherry mx blues are superior to gateron blues. Remember.
>>

lol wtf happened there. That is weird.
>>

Thanks, DAS was one of the ones I was considering so I'll avoid that now
Looked at Ducky's before, definitely going to go for Cherry MX blues if I get a mech. I'm keeping an eye out for IMB Model Ms because I'd really like an original one of them, but that's not as easy to find obviously

buckling spring > *

I've got a ducky at work just because it's polite in that it's quiet. Otherwise buckling spring is the best switch ever made.

anybody who prefers MX to buckling spring has dainty chink hands with carpel tunnel. Just look at the build of the buckling spring. that is american fucking manufacturing. heavy on material, resilient to failure, easily replaceable, fabricated to be sturdy as fuck for big meaty american hands

>>
>>61239250
That's not a legitimate complaint.

I have a set of doubleshot ABS keycaps in SA profile (pulse) and they are extremely nice.

There are cheap PBT keycaps and cheap ABS keycaps. ABS has slightly cheaper manufacturing costs so when a brand is cutting costs, of course they will use ABS over PBT.

When you're actually getting a quality keycap, it could go either way.

I also have a set of IMSTO gray PBT dyesub keycaps which are considered the best by many. I don't prefer them.

Fucked up how? I have a set of pulse and they are all perfect.
>>
>>61238607
Well... They seem to have been a limited run. Cuz I can't find an available place to order them from.
>>
>>61240063
You weren't around for the shit show that was SA 1976. It was possible to get four sets for like 50 bucks cause they were all warped to shit. It also delayed all their other SA projects for a whole year. All the other sets had problems, but none were as bad as 1976. They then sold their old tooling to maxkey about a year ago. I believe godspeed is the first set to be made with the new tooling, and its also why SA keysets have become so much cheaper, becuase they no longer throw away half the sets the make.

how easy is it to lube up plate mounted switches?

>>
>>61241673
TADA68, though I would recommend getting it with browns, since gateron blues aren't that good.
>>
>>61241681
Should probably take a full day since you'll be desoldering the switches, opening them up and lubing every single stem, then resoldering them.
>>
>>61241720
oh shit really?
ive never soldered before, are there any good guides to start?
>>
>>61241730
If you have no experience with soldering whatsoever, I wouldn't recommend messing with your kb if you care about it, since you can damage the pcb really easily if you don't know what you're doing.
Watch some videos of people swapping out switches/ building keyboards, there's a bunch of those on yt, should give some general knowledge about it, but practice does make perfect so don't expect it to go smoothly on first tries, practice on something else first.
And you will need a desoldering pump, mine was like $2 but you shouldn't get the really cheap ones since it does make the job more difficult.
>>
>>61241656
>>61241673

as far as i can tell they are mostly equivalent, the case design is a tiny bit different as you can see in pic related, YMD75 comes with gateron or cherry switches, KBD75 comes with gateron or zealio switches, YMD75 has cheaper assembly service ($7 vs $17)
>>
>>61241808
What is the best out off the different gateron switches?
>>
>>61241895
it's generally agreed that gateron brown, black and red are better than the cherry equivalents. the opinion on gateron blue varies (better/same/worse).
>>
>>61241895
>>61241916
but which switch you should pick depends on your preferences. blue is popular for typing. gateron brown is a great alternative if you want it to be quieter.
>>
>>61241894
It also comes in less colors, but I'm assuming that means it's on aliexpress these are gonna be produced in more than small batches.

I have a KBD75 on the way, it's good to know that I'll be able ot get another 75 percent kit down the road without much trouble if I want though.

The guy is a pussy. The smoke is burning resin, which is not good for you but it's not gloom and doom either. He's probably got a shit ton of smoke from using extra resin flux though which is why he needs a fan.

The glasses thing is important, just because boiling resin or metal in your eye is not a good thing.

The most important thing he forgot to tell you is to buy a desoldering pen though. An iron won't suck out the solder from the holes with magic.

If the caps are for cherry mx kbs they'll fit kbs with cherry mx switches in all of its variants and all of the cherry clones as long as the keyboard has standard sizes.
There are several keycap profiles, pic related is most of them.
Keycap material is up for discussion but most people prefer PBT, since it's more durable and provides a better feeling when typing.
Double-shot and dye-sub keycaps are more expensive and highly regarded cause the printing will never/take a very long time to fade away.

>>61240283
I made my tada68 into a 40%

I pretty much only use the number row when I need to hit a couple of numbers by themselves, when not otherwise typing - it's easier to peck at the top row with one hand than bring both hands to a typing position, or do one-handed acrobatics to hit the layer modifier+letter. When the hands are already positioned for typing, though, the number row sits pretty much unused.
>>
Looking for a living room keyboard. I love the design of the tada68, especially, the minimalistic design, it's small size and white and grey caps.

I'm looking for similar boards for comparison. Wireless would be a huge plus, but I'm not expecting much. I'm fine with running a wire from my TV to my couch.

>>
>>61242154
Either Colemak or Workman.

Workman makes some great assumptions and on paper looks like the best currently existing layout, but it's very unclear whether it actually ends up being better than Colemak in practice. All "benchmarks" for layouts also have to make some assumptions as to what should count for the score so it's really hard to decide which scores to trust and what really ends up "best". Workman is also such obscure hipster shit that it's really hard to find opinions of other people using it.
I personally am learning it right now despite all that. Unfortunately I don't know colemak so I won't be able to compare them.

Dvorak is outdated shit. It improves vastly over qwerty, but is completely outclassed by other modern layouts, so if you're going to be re-learning to type there's no reason to choose the inferior option.

3u spacebars are possible to get. your pic looks like it has two 3u spacebars instead of 3u+3.25u. check if the connectors have the same spacing between them, and if so, you just need two 3u spacebars. if the connectors are the same as on the 2.75u right shift key, you need just one 3u spacebar/"spacekey" and one 2.75u shift/"spacekey".

two 3u spacebars for $23.87:

then for example this "spacekeys" kit where the keys are concave unlike normal spacebars:

It really doesn't matter where they're made whose hands touch the machinery. It matters who sets the standards, what the quality control is, what the design is, how much time was put into engineering and design of molds and so on.

I work for a company that manufactures stuff in china and it's as good or better than the stuff made in the US. it all comes down to cost.

Topre doesn't make products that target a specific price. They make the best product they can and charge a lot for it too. Chinese clones penny-pinch and cut corners and try to minimize the cost as much as possible.

The apostrophe key on my Pok3r with clears stopped registering presses a few weeks ago, and even though I can just remap the key on another layer, the problem is still driving me insane.

Because of this, and even though I loved this board, I am going to replace it and get a new keyboard. My question is, are there any 60% or tenkeyless keyboards that stand out to you over this one, besides the HHKB which I am not interested in? >>
>>61251709
They reduce costs. Moving to China from Korea cuts costs. Quality hasn't suffered because they still test the shit out of everything.

After going to China and visiting Chinese factories, I can tell you from first-hand experience that chinese works are excellent and probably best in the world. Why? Because they aren't spoiled, they don't have unions and they do what they're told. Yes, that view might feel inhumane but that's what makes them good. They're capable to producing the highest quality product possible IF THEY"RE TOLD to do that.

If you tell them that they won't be penalized based on how much time they spend per task and if you instruct them to produce something based on tolerances instead, they will produce good stuff. There's so many workers to choose from that you can pick detailed oriented people to work on something like that.

Anyway, that's way out of the scope of this thread so I'll leave it at that. I got what I wanted. Thanks to the anons above for pointing me at NovaTouch.

How do I rma a keyboard with a switch that stopped working from mechanicalkeyboards.com?

I've never sent anything back before in my life, so I am unfamiliar with the process.

get the barebones keyboards as their keycaps are mediocre. then buy a set of cherry profile PBT keycaps for 40-50 bucks depending on what you want.

Hey /mkg/, so, coming from /csg/ myself, I just got myself a James Donkey 619 and it's pretty nice desu. Given that It's a chinaboard, I don't care about warranties and such and want to mod this thing.
Are there any keyboard enclosures that'd fit the PCB and such of this board? Though floating key designs are neat, I much prefer the bezeled look of older keyboards.
I've seen the layout before, function key row being spaced fairly close to the number row, but I don't remember which keyboards those were and where to get the enclosures.
Anyone help a dude out?

What keyboards do you recomend to get? What ones should avoid?

With that keyboard you can't due to the position of the screws, but I'm sure you can figure something out

IBM model M/Fs are great to good. Dell bigfoot keyboards are also pretty common. Maybe you'll find old apple keyboards, but beware those need an adapter that isn't made anymore, and they stopped being mechanical after 95. If you're really luck get any old honeywell microswitch keyboard that you can find

I need a new keyboard and I feel like treating myself to a mechanical one. I intend to use it for gaming, too.

I like the clicking feel of mechanical keyboards but not the loud clicking of blue switches - I assume the Brown switches would be the ideal for me, then? I don't really understand the difference between red and black switches, but I know brown switches seem to be the middle ground between them and blue ones.
>>
>>61253928
Depends on the type of gaming you do.
If you're into more "esports" type of games (games that are competitive, quick paced, and mechanical) then get reds or blacks. Black just requires a bit more force to push down, not much more, but a bit. If that type of gaming is not your thing, then get browns.
>>
>>61253928
It sounds like you want tactility. You could get custom switches that are really tactile like MOD-Ms and make your own keyboard, but that tends to be more money and obviously takes some work.

You should just get a keyboard that has Cherry Clear switches. In the meantime, you should really get a switch tester to make sure you really want Cherry Brown.
>>
>>61253990
>>61254138
I do play some FPS games like Overwatch and Battlefield, so yeah, mostly quick-paced games over strategy ones. I've used a rubber dome the past few years, the last one being a Logitech 120, so I'm very inexperienced at this. Linear/not tactile switches would be better, then?

The keyboard I'm looking at right now has Gateron brown switches, which I hear are lighter/smoother than Cherry ones. I don't know if they're comparable to reds.
>>
>>61254203
Those are clones of MX browns. They're completely fine and compatible with MX Key Caps so that's good.

Since you play FPS games, then I think tactile keys (Browns) would be better for you. Reds/Blacks are good for MOBAs and RTS games that have a lot of repetitive high speed key pressing.
>>
>>61254203
Subtle bump of Cherry MX browns might better. But the tactile very subtle you should try the real switches before buy.

But if you like the tactile of MX blues, go for Gateron browns.
>>
>>61254241
>>61254281
Thanks for the advice. Browns are looking to be the best pick after all. I do like the tactile feel of blue switches, but not how loud they are. Reds seem to be much lighter from what I've heard but also I'll definitely try them out a little more before making my final decision, though, since most people seem to prefer reds for gaming and I don't want buyer's remorse.
>>
>>61252962
I mean, it's nothing a dremel, some good standoffs, and a bit of epoxy can't fix.
Anything cheaper though? I don't know if I'd feel comfortable about paying nearly double the price of the keyboard on an acrylic housing like that. Especially something that's just through-hole like that, I like the whole covered smooth face plated kinda like on the Quickfires, HHKBs, and old keyboards of back in the day.
>>
>>61253879
CM Storm quickfire or Ducky One TKL.
Both have cherry green switches and aren't too bad. Quickfire's hard to find, ducky can be found here or just generally around

what cherry key is generally the best one for gaymen

>>
>>61255083
MX Silvers are supposed to be the dedicated gaming switch, but if you're buying a keyboard for gaming instead of typing comfort you're going to have a bad time.
>>
>>61255083
The best one for gaming is the one with the lowest latency. Cherry MX Speed or the upcoming MX Speed Silver switches (http://www.pcgamer.com/the-new-cherry-mx-speed-silver-may-become-its-most-popular-gaming-switch/) are ideal for this.

Cherry also has some boards, like the Cherry MX 6.0 (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00UBPKAF4) with some "RealKey" tech that replaces the digital matrix used to poll which key is presse with an analog relay, which reduces delay for inputs, as well.

Gay Linus also made a video on laser-based keyboards which also fit this quick reaction type of keyboard.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sSKXcbnIjmk

Bottoming out keys is also a factor. While you can train yourself to not bottom out keys, some games will require double/triple taps to perform some mechanic. If you use some o-rings, you can marginally reduce the overall travel depth of the key and give you a slight edge in multi-tapping keys quickly.
>>
>>61235045
Nice X cloud 2s, had mine for a while now and love them.
>>
>>61255173
>double/triple taps
>bottoming out
Only for linear. Tactile switches does the better job because the bump.
>>
>>61255268
All of the quick response keyboards linked or listed in the video link are linear. MX Speed Silver, MX Speed, and the Cherry MX Board 6.0 uses MX Red; All linear. The three laser-type keyboards reviewed by Gay Linus are also linear travel.

In so far there is no keytype that promises both quick response and is non-linear.

So yes, o-rings (while subjective in design by themselves) may assist some users who habitually bottom out by reducing the travel distance.

I do quite a bit of typing as well so I'm hoping if I get one for vidya it's not going to be too troublesome when I type
Is it really that big of a problem when I type if I get a key made specifically for games

What's that stuff about brown switches "feels like red with dirt in them", in FAQ?
I need a soft, not laud switch, with good tactile feedback and preferably short throw, but not necessary . Browns sounded like something I need, but that dirt thing doesn't sound too great. Should I resign from tactile feedback and get something with MX SPEED SILVERs?
Or maybe something outside of MX switches?

Matias Quiet Pro or Topres.

tfw using my planck from the first drop
>>
>>61255515
Because the bump in Cherry MX browns very subtle some might not feel in intensive typing. Gateron browns offer larger bump and with smooth stem make the bump more pronounce.

But for myself, I do like the subtle bump of browns. Reds with dirt in the middle is not far from that and that exactly why I prefer Cherry browns.

But again, try before buying if possible.

Why are keyboards with the numpad but without the function row so uncommon?
Numpads are great and far better than the numrow for entering strings of numbers, while the function row is mostly irrelevant since it's far easier to hit FN+number than stretch your fingers all the way up to it. Especially if you use a split spacebar setup with an FN key in the middle, then you can easily access the FN layer with either hand and no stretching.

Browns are pretty good if you like having a slight tactile response, but also like the light feeling of reds. I found blues too excessive and reds too light, so browns hit the sweet spot for me. Again, different strokes for different folks.
