KSC75, DT880

Looking for a replacement for my DT880; its stress relief failed and the cable came clear out of the can. Would prefer something with a detachable cable to prevent this from happening again, and would prevent something with much less harsh sounding treble. My KSC75 honestly sounded better than the DT880s but I've been using the DT880s because they're way more comfortable and the KSC75 hurt the top of the ears after a while.

This is the right timing for HD600. They're <$300 at amazon right now.

Call beyerdynamic and tell them to replace the cable and mod it to take a 3.5mm so that this doesn't happen again. Invest the rest into a second pair if you feel like you still need to.

I think I'm going to pull the trigger on chinkshit guys. I probably don't even need the amp yet but fuck I just want to buy these and never worry about DAC/amps anymore. The small amounts of discussion I've read seems to say that it adds nothing to the sound which is great.

I don't know why I'm hesitating. It's only $185 for the stack, and I don't want the schiit stack because snake oil and their product(s) breaking headphones thing.

pic related (the guy switched out the opamps though), I don't see any red flags, not that I would be able to recognize.
>>
>>61223145
Go for it dude. If you get a lemon, massdrop will refund you. The customer service is slow but reliable.
>>
>>61223145
I remember considering a Topping combined DAC/Headphone amp/T-class speaker amp a while back. I decided not to pull the trigger after reading reports that it used a very noisy power supply. Do research to make sure these products don't also have noisy wallwarts.
>>
>>61223195
well the reviews and discussion I've seen (so far) have been pretty positive about it. Build quality apparently really good which is what i'm surprised and still skeptical about.

but the review I'm reading is also saying
>Ok it is not as refined, and doesn’t have as wide a soundstage as some of the more expensive DAC’s out there, but for the price the features and sound really make it very good value for money indeed.
DACs affect the soundstage too? That sounds like bullshit.

Holy fuck the hd650s are amazing. Fuck you all

>non-detachable cables without modding

What's the consensus to using wood for headphones though? Cracking/deformation sounds inevitable especially in places with winters. I mean you can treat it like a guitar but that sounds like a pain.
>>
>>61223562
Wood is generally a poor choice because it's generally more resonant than polymers. Sennheiser's extensive research into the HD800 determined that certain polymers are the least resonant headphone manufacturing materials.
>>
>>61223665
is there a plus to it at least? Like nice to have a wooden headphone in a repertoire just for whatever uniqueness that may give? Or by resonant do you mean just a noisy/interfering mess? I guess that would explain my that innerfidelity guy says the wooden headphones were better sounding on low volumes.
>>
>>61223408
I laughed louder than I should
>>
>>61223665
>>61223705
It's most likely that the effect of wood instead of plastic is inaudible. As long as it doesn't affect the usual measurements - FR, distortion, and to a lesser extent CSD - it shouldn't matter at all.
>>
>>61223705
>is there a plus to it at least?
Just aesthetics. Resonance is literally a form of distortion as it's not part of the original signal.
>>
>>61224002
Bass resonance can take a long-ass time to completely decay, as I'm sure you've seen in CSD measurements. I wouldn't be surprised if the extra bass resonance certain woods can create can be audible.
>>
>>61224024
Well I'm not sure if these particular headphones have been measured, but if they have, the CSD graph should let you know that. If the CSD shows an all clear, then it doesn't matter.
>>
>>61224047
One example.
>>
>>61224112
Like I said, it varies from headphone to headphone. It's illogical to draw conclusions about EVERY wooden headphone based on one.

https://diyaudioheaven.wordpress.com/headphones/measurements/brands-j-r/th-x00-mahogany-massdrop/
>>
>>61224144
>It's illogical to draw conclusions about EVERY wooden headphone based on one.
Of course. That's why I've used:
>generally
>certain woods
>>
>>61224154
There's not really enough data to even suggest a trend, or to say that wood is a "poor choice".
>>
I can understand getting modi 2 uber for the optical input but what's better about the magni 2 uber?
>>
>>61224268
Speaker pre-outs.
>>
at the moment i'm tossing up between the D30 + A30, the DAC-X6 or the Fulla 2

Does anyone have any other recommendations around that price range? this will be my first amp/dac, for my K271 mkiis
>>
>>61224268
It takes external power, not from the usb port, which supposedly makes it better
>>
>>61224367
I read that wrong. It has pre-outs, a different chasis, and more power.
>>
>>61224286
>K271 mkiis
I have AKG K702s and I barely get to 2 or 3 (out of 9) on my E10K DAC/Amp. The Fulla2 will be good enough if it's anything like the E10K.

I'm more inclined to believe that DAC/amp is a whole marketing meme. I don't really hear a difference between my E10K and my onboard audio. Granted I have a newer mobo so maybe my onboard audio was just great in the first place, but the headphone amp requirements that people parrot around are usually overblown.

in more cases I'm guessing some people just like how their DAC or amp color/distort the sound of their music. I just joined the D30/A30 drop myself just to see if I'll even hear a difference.
>>
>>61224175
The plastic Denon D2000, which is a nearly identical design to the D5000, is significantly less resonant than the mahogany D5000. Mahogany is definitely firmly on the denser, less resonant side of woods.
>>
>>61224457
Perhaps one pair was faulty. Or perhaps the design of the chamber changed significantly between the plastic and the wood. You don't know.
>>
>>61224465
Here we have four extremely similar designs from Audio Technica:
http://en.goldenears.net/5351
http://en.goldenears.net/21225
http://en.goldenears.net/13934
http://en.goldenears.net/4490

When a snapheiser snaps, it sends plastic shards everywhere at up to 300mph or 482km/h. Snapheiser's don't just have shitty sound, they're a health hazard. Beyerdynamic uses safe plastics which rarely snap and are never hazardous.

LOCATION: USA ORLANDO,FL UNTIL JULY 10 THEN UK

**Budget**- 400$ max. Not too flexible but if there's a recommendation close by then do iclude.

Source - My android, and windows laptop.

Isolation- I won't mind if it doesn't affect the sound quality. But I won't go out of my way to seek it out either. It's a nice plus?

Using them in Public? - Mainly at home, airplanes, and commutes. So yes.

**Preferred Type of Headphone** - Whichever offers the best sound quality for the budget. I'm guessing that'd be full-sized (but closed since I'll be using these in public). I'm fine with IEMs or on-ears if they would provide better overall sq.

**Preferred tonal balance**- I'm not quite sure so I was gonna go for neutrals. I listen to a lot of /mu/core if that helps. To be more specific maybe: Radiohead, Mac Demarco, Beatles, Pink Floyd, Arcade Fire, Fleet Foxes, Gorillaz etc.

**Past headphones**- Sennheiser Momentum 2 IEM. Great little pair of buds but they're growing old and a part of the plastic covering the wires is torn so the wires are exposed. Plus the plastic buds keep falling off all the time. I feel like their days are numbered.

**Preferred Music**- Already said above but yeah let's just add Sigur Ros, FJM, Animal Collective, Tame Impala, King Gizzard, King Crimson, Black Emperor, The Velvet Underground, Neutral Milk Hotel, Aphex Twin, Flying Lotus, Kendrick Lamar, Mac Miller, SBTRKT to cover some more bases.

**What would you like to improve on from your set-up**- Sound quality. Maybe wireless because I have a tendency to move away from my laptop and forget that I'm connected to it. Obviously as long as the wireless doesn't affect the quality noticeably.

**What are you looking for going into your next headphones?** - I' only had the senns m2 iem and generic earbuds. Idk what I like yet so I'd get something that works with a variety. Plus I like to keep music as vanilla as possible, never liked messing with the equaliser.

I wear my earbuds to bed, and I toss and turn, often having the cable get tangled up, which generally reduces the lifespan of the thing, so I need something that can withstand it.

the way I'm rationalizing is it that the earpads are already half the cost of the headphones so it's more economical to buy the K7XX and have another set of headphones compared to just buying the earpads separately, but this may be dumb.

Sure. Even schiit has more expensive shit. The issue is that any improvements at that point should not be hearable.

Can someone explain to me the difference between a unit like this
https://www.amazon.com/Pyle-Pro-PHA40-4-Channel-Headphone-Amplifier/dp/B003M8NVFS
and something like a SMSL amp or the magni? It looks like a professional device and I love that it can do multiple headphones at once. I have a few at my desk and I would prefer to not have to switch which one is plugged in.
Is what I linked sufficient for pushing a dt990 and hd600?
I already have a DAC
>>
>>61231807
That's a really great link that makes a lot of logical sense. The same could probably apply to headphones, too, as Tyll's graphs show that small changes in how they fit on the head can produce very audible changes in sound.
>>
>>61233490
>Pyle
Just no. Worse than Behringer.
>>
>>61233490
Not a rule against those types of devices in general, but that particular one has 3.5 stars. Prolly would look for another unit of that type if that's what you're interested in.
>>
>>61233587
Okay, thanks. Yeah I'm not overly concerned with that specific unit it was just the first one I found on amazon.
There is a distinct difference in price and aesthetic between devices like the one I linked and the audiophile schiit/fiio/smsl kind but they seem to do the same exact thing, increase volume.
Is there something these professional/musician looking amps don't do that the audiophile ones do?
>>
>>61233627
If they measure as good, they sound as good. Maybe they're not built as sturdy as the audiophile stuff which is usually all metal, but otherwise there shouldn't be a difference. Also I don't think you get stuff like gain switches for more fine tuned volume control.

Alright, thanks again.
I'm thinking of picking up the Monoprice desktop amp. It has a DAC too so I can free my dragonfly from my desk and leave it with my phone. They want $80 for it and it's only a little bit less powerful than the magni but my dragonfly is just barely too weak for the dt990s. At 100% volume it reaches listening level but I think it's coming at the cost of sound quality so I'm buying an amp that doesn't need to be at 100% output all the time.
Looking at:
Micca Origin+ which I would plug into my onboard audio with optical
Magni which I would plug into the dragonfly
Monorpcie desktop amp/dac

>>
>>61233716

>>
>>61233716

>>
>>61233716
The monoprice one is bad with low impedance headphones. The micca I've heard is quite weak. The fiio e10k, fx dac-x6, or magni would probably do the job, it's just a matter of how much you're willing to pay for aesthetics.
>>
>>61233716
I've bought three things from Monoprice and none of them lasted more than a few months. At this point I'm convinced they're only useful for cheap cables.

So I want to build my own headset by combining a VModa Boompro and a pair of good headphones so that I can listen to music and shit but only have to deal with one set of headphones for both.

I need something that the boompro can plug into without modification if possible.

So far I’ve looked at

ATH-M40x
SPH9500
HD558

Would like to stay under $120 as I’m poor so that leaves around $90-100 for the headphones.

External DAC+amp isolates your audio chain from the possibly noisy internals of a PC.
Having to access the rear of a PC to plug in/unplug devices is also possibly inconvenient for many users.
In additional, digital (software) volume control lowers signal to noise ratio. A physical analog volume control knob does not.

I cut earplugs to the length of the tips, poked a hole through them with a safety pin, expanded said hole with a rat tooth comb, inverted standard silicone tips on said rat tooth comb, slid the earplugs over the inverted silicone tip then uninverted the silicone tip over the earplug. They isolated really well but I stopped using them because they added bass response, I EQ all my gear to neutrality and, at the time, I didn't have a way of measuring IEMs.
I may give this method a try again now that I have since figured out a way of accurately measuring IEMs.
>>

The advantage of eartips like these over foam or silicone is that they have better isolation than either with the form-fittingness of foam and the longevity of silicone.

>rat tooth comb
I meant rat tail comb. Rat tooth comb doesn't even make sense. What the fuck, me?

Soundstage 8.4. Not bad.
>>
What's a decent pair of IEMs under 30 bucks?
Using the AKG Y20U right now and they're pretty decent but I haven't tried many so can't tell if they actually are.
>>
>>61237316
I was looking into these as well. I realized the stuff I needed was dirt cheap so I'll try my own diy version of these too.
>>
>>61237227
Sennheiser's are decent but overpriced. I think the standard /hpg/ recommendation for headsets right now is a SHP9500 with a BoomPro.
>>
>>61222356

What do you guys think of lowless music as opposed to mp4?
>>
>>61237381
How the fuck do you measure soundstage?
>>
>buy bluetooth headphones with mic for use on the go
>want to use it with laptop as well when watching youtube/movies with GF when we are apart
>fucking low-quality audio when mic is active

what fucking jewery is this? Bluetooth should have enough data throughput to stream high-quality audio whilst recording mic. What kind of arbitrary limitation is this shit?
>>
>>61237421
Bluetooth headphones can't transparently reproduce lossy audio anyways so I don't know why you'd buy them in the first place if you care about sound quality.
>>
>>61237283
>>61237394
Any recommendations on other brands? HyperX has good sound/mic quality and is pretty cheap
havent used much Steelseries/Razer
Logitech I know is trash
>>
>>61237397
Studies suggest that 192 kbps mp3 is transparent and indistinguishable from lossless in blind tests. The threshold for Opus is likely significantly lower.
>>
>>61237442
Razer are trash, period. Steelseries are a bit better than other gaming companies, but you should still get a decent non-gaming can and not "the least evil" gaming ones.
>>
>>61237409
By clicking on "read more about..." you get http://www.rtings.com/headphones/tests/sound-quality/soundstage which covers that.
>>
>>61237478
Lmao. You can't measure something that isn't real ;)
>>
>>61237444
>Studies suggest that 192 kbps mp3 is transparent and indistinguishable from lossless in blind tests.
Wasn't that 128kbit/s? :^)

No, seriously, hydrogenaudio done plenty of testing. mp3 isn't transparent, not even at 320.
>>
>>61237490
Yet it can be measured, so it's a magnitude, and therefore real.
>>
>>61237442
If you really are set on getting a gay headset:
>Razer = Baby boy's first chink shit
>Steelseries = Breaks after 6 months
>Astro = Shitty mic quality
I hear Kingston makes decent headsets, but I can't confirm that.
>>
>>61237494
>No, seriously, hydrogenaudio done plenty of testing. mp3 isn't transparent, not even at 320.
Gib links.
>>
>>61237435
Cause wireless, plus audio quality is good enough when mic isn't active.
>>
>>61237442
Any headset is going to be overpriced for its sound quality, any brand. If you absolutely insist on paying out the ass for inferior sound quality look into reputable audio brands like Sennheiser, Beyerdynamic and Audio Technica, all of whom I'm aware make headsets.
That being said, just get a fucking SHP9500 and a BoomPro and be done with it.
>>
>>61237603
>that guy who joins skype/discord with a shitty "attach to headphones" mic yet claims it is good

Happens way too often. Thank god discord has a volume-slider for individuals so that you can just fucking mute them or put them at 10% so that their shitty mic isn't super distracting.
>>
>>61237582
Try https://hydrogenaud.io/index.php/topic,72542.0.html
As always it depends on the sample. But if there's samples for which it is known to be non-transparent at a given bitrate, then the codec is, obviously, not transparent at that bitrate.
>>
>>61237637
Look up BoomPro on Youtube for sound quality demonstrations. It seems to be a quality product.

Huh. In the future I'll phrase it as "192 kbps mp3 is generally transparent in most circumstances." Thanks for that.
The new version of Opus needs to be thoroughly blind tested.
>>
Well I finally did it /g/urus.

I posted in the last thread about my DT 770's finally starting to fail me where my cord/headphone connection was getting screwy. I ordered the Sennheiser HD 600 and pulled the trigger just a minute ago. Can't wait to try them out.

If you're not going to repair your 770's send them to me, always wanted to try out 770's for muh high quality african-american low end experience.

Nope I'm not >>61222566

I used DT770s, to be fair they are 3.5 years old, and the recent damage to the connection isn't unbearable, just slightly annoying at times.

I would think like 1.5 meters or so. The Tennmak uses MMCX so you can get any other MMCX cable of a different length.

Imho don't invest into expensive IEMs for sport/gym, it's not worth it. You're not critically listening anyways so why bother? Get Rock Zircon (there's a sport version of those) and buy a new pair when they fall apart.

Reads as "not transparent" and definitely unsuitable for archival.
Where low bitrate makes sense... opus. Because mp3 compares pretty unfavourably.

besides the HD6XX, K7XX, and the TH-X00

is there anything else from Massdrop that's a fantastic value? I'm tempted for the TH-X00 but making it have detachable cables sounds like a pain since it involves soldering.

I wish this website would post their compensation curve.

Stupid question but what's it with all the compensated and xy smoothed octave frequency response curves?
I read that it is the perceived loudness compensated, so how humans hear it but what's the difference betweent all the different attempts?
>>
>>61238172
New thread.
>>
>>61238178
Different dummy heads/couplers will need different compensation curves. Furthermore, each website will likely have their own philosophy as to what a good sounding curve is.
>>
>>61238111
There's an anon here that modded detachable cables on his X00's. He may be lurking but it happened.
>>
>>61238203
>each website will likely have their own philosophy
This is what i don't get. Isn't there some standardized way to do things? If everything is relative due to equipment and personal preference, why bother with measurements in the first place.
>>
>>61238261
>Isn't there some standardized way to do things?
There isn't an ideal one, in my opinion. The "standard" diffuse field curve sounds too bright IMO and the Harman target sounds too dark IMO. I personally prefer something like the Harman target with flat bass instead of boosted bass, which is basically an ER-4S.
>>
>>61238252
yes it's possible but it involves soldering, I don't have the skill or equipment right now and I certainly don't want to ruin $400 headphones because it's my 1st soldering job.
