Best earbuds to buy that aren't super expensive, have great sound quality and don't dig into ears?

X00 for that clean nigbass.

How do you know if your headphones are underpowered?
Does an amp only increase loudness or does it increase signal strength?

I'm not sure what else to get. my SHURE SRH840 is a few years old and working fine but it might kick the bucket any time.

what should I get as a precautionary replacement? studio monitoring, musician.

>>61210190
The thing that almost always breaks on headphones is the cable. Yours has a detachable cable so I wouldn't worry about it breaking.
>>
>>61210282
actually, SHURE SRH840s are kind of notorious for having the plastic hinges break after a while. Mine broke and I had to use some plastic epoxy to fix it.

yeah it still works, I like it, and I'm blindly brand loyal to SHURE now but I'm just curious what else I can get.

DT 880s are about as flat and boring as people said when I was reading reviews, but that's what I like. I've been leaning toward more fun headphones lately though, I've heard the HD 600s were warmer so I wanted to try it.

>>
>>61210766
>What's your personal preference and why?
My main headphone is a DT880, i like how the extra treble makes easier to spot some problems in a recording, makes it easier to fix them (one of the reasons i like the V6 too), i also find the bass to be more pleasing than on the HD600, sounds a bit closer to what i like when i'm the one playing (to be honest i think headphones don't do justice to bass, but it's good enough).
I wouldn't mind having a HD600 as main headphone though, they are closer to neutral overall and the warmish signature is less fatigating, also, imho DT880 has a larger stage but HD600 has better imaging, i find the later more appealing.

Bottom line: try to test it somewhere, if you like what you hear there's no reason not to go for it, both are pretty good can't go wrong either eay.
>>

>>
>>61210858
Alright, if you're mentioning warmness on the HD 600 and love the neutral sound too then I might stick to the 600 instead of the 650. Sounds like the move I was looking for, thanks.
>>
>>61210956
According to measurements the HD650 is much warmer, not sure if that's what you are looking for, can't speak much about the HD650 though, never tested it, but i'm glad that it helped to some extend.
>>
>>61210956
You'll find the HD600 warm enough if you're used to the DT880. The HD650 is too warm.
>>
>>61210956
>>61211002
>>61211034
Highly recommend you find a place where you can test both headphones to see what you like more.
>>
>>61211062
Agreed.
>>
>>61211062
This. /hpg/ is fun and all, but it isn't a place I would look for suggestions with expensive headphones.
>>
>>61210683
It's just shitflinging. HD600 and DT880 are very similar, the DT880 just has less upper midrange and is brighter. It's nice how so many headphones exist with so many different signatures. While the HD600 might be neutral, those who want more treble detail will opt for the DT880.
>>
>>61211157
Excessive treble =/= detail
>>
>>61211204
Recessed treble doesn't help either ;)

Looking to upgrade from my Fiio E10k, I heard the OBJECTIVE2+ODAC is pretty good. What are your recommendations : I have a pair of DT770 300 ohms and soon a pair of HD6XX from Massdrop. I'm also not looking to go crazy, maybe like 150$ to 300$
>>
>>61211281
The E10k is demonstrably transparent as a DAC. You do not need to upgrade in the DAC department. If you want more volume/headroom run the E10k's line out into a Magni 2.

Used they're pretty hard to find, new they're expensive and have little to no customer support
The TH-X00 are going to be much easier and cheaper to buy used, fostex also has infinitely better customer support than E-MU.
With that said, I wouldn't recommend the platform. I have a pair of LCD-3s, and planar bass is so much better than what the teaks/TH-X00 have to offer. I've never had Hifiman, but I've heard bad things about their company. I've heard similar things about audeze, but at least mine have a 3 year warranty.

Hearing the difference now isn't the reason to encode to FLAC. FLAC uses lossless compression, while MP3 is 'lossy'. What this means is that for each year the MP3 sits on your hard drive, it will lose roughly 12kbps, assuming you have SATA - it's about 15kbps on IDE, but only 7kbps on SCSI, due to rotational velocidensity. You don't want to know how much worse it is on CD-ROM or other optical media.

I started collecting MP3s in about 2001, and if I try to play any of the tracks I downloaded back then, even the stuff I grabbed at 320kbps, they just sound like crap. The bass is terrible, the midrange…well don’t get me started. Some of those albums have degraded down to 32 or even 16kbps. FLAC rips from the same period still sound great, even if they weren’t stored correctly, in a cool, dry place. Seriously, stick to FLAC, you may not be able to hear the difference now, but in a year or two, you’ll be glad you did.

Some things to look out for:

598/558, quite neutral, rolled off treble
880, neutral, bit of treble emphasis (some people don't like this)

Custom Studio (aka better DT 770) - V shaped with emphasized bass though you can change this with the sliders. "Fun" sounding headphone.
M40X - neutral

>"active balanced ground driving"

Sounds like a fancy word for active ground. It's a bit like balanced drive ie. 4-channel for headphone: in theory there are advantages of such configuration but in real-life listening the positives are probably negligible.

I've built my share of 2-channel, 3-channel and 4-channel DIY amps and my experience is if the design is good then it's hard to tell the difference among them.
>>
>>61214803
Dynalo is a good design. In a previous meet my relatively simple build was preferred by attendees against a much more expensive Schiit Ragnarok. They said it's more neutral and smoother.

Both Kevin Gilmore and Ti Kan are top-tier amp designers. Most, if not all, of their designs are end-game material.

I just attempted to EQ my Sony XBA-H1 iems for a neutral sound. My process was to add and remove decibels based on pic related FR until the line would be more or less straight.
Suprisingly it sounds better to me than they do with out any EQ but at the same time I'm sure it's not this simple. Is there anything I should be aware of or anything I did incorrectly with the EQ settings?
Also these things are wonderful for modern trance music. They have all the speed of armature drivers with the low end of dynamic because it has both.

Ken Rockwell on the DT 880:
The Beyer DT 880 is the best dynamic headphone I've ever heard, regardless of price.

It is a favorite among professional recording engineers for its accuracy, and a favorite among music lovers for its clean, open, uncolored and faithful-to-the-concert-hall sound. I greatly prefer this Beyer DT 880 to the far more expensive Sennheiser HD 800.

I'd be happy with these as my only sound reproducer for the rest of my life. They sound much better than Ultrasone Edition 8 and Sennheiser HD800. The Stax are better and in a class by themselves, but require special power supplies. The DT 880 have no rough edges sonically or mechanically.

I made another attempt but this time instead of bringing all the frequencies down to flat I've brought them all up to highest point which is about 100hz. This sounds good too but I'm not sure if it's all that different from the previous settings. I remember reading somewhere that you should EQ low shit up instead of high shit down.
Once again, just looking for feedback here from anyone with experience EQing.

>I remember reading somewhere that you should EQ low shit up instead of high shit down.
It doesn't really make a difference as long as you do preamp compensation properly. The end result, after preamp compensation, will always be that you're only EQing things down.
EQ'ing the bass and mids to GE's compensated graph won't give you a neutral sound. It'll give you a bass-boosted, Harman target like sound. If you want a neutral sound EQ to this graph instead, ignoring the target line for 20 Hz - 750 Hz. EQ the bass down so it's flat from 20 Hz to 750 Hz.
You can use the graph you posted in >>61217280 to EQ the 750 Hz - 20 kHz response, but you'll need to do fine-tuning with Sinegen as described by https://wiki.installgentoo.com/index.php?title=Headphones#SineGen because GE's measurement doesn't take into account your own unique ear canal resonances.
Also, Room EQ Wizard's GUI is superior (but has a higher learning curve) to Peace GUI for creating Equalizer APO settings. File menu > export > export filter settings as text in REW exports config files that Equalizer APO can read. Be sure to set "Equalizer" (upper right) in REW's EQ window to "Generic."
>>
>>61217404
>>61218056
Also, if you have the latest Equalizer APO release, view menu => Analysis panel in the configuration editor is super useful. The "Peak gain" thing on the left tells you if you're clipping or not, and by how much. Simply adjust the preamp until "peak gain" reads -0.1 dB to prevent clipping.
If you decide to give REW a try, which is worth it because it can generate more precise filters than Peace, to load the config files it generates in EAPO configuration editor simply click the green + add filter button, select control > include then browse to the config file REW generated, then use analysis panel to set the preamp properly.
>>
>>61218123
>which is worth it because it can generate more precise filters than Peace
I take this back after playing around with Peace (which I haven't done for a while) but it's still possibly worth it because you can work with 20 filters at a time instead of 13.
>>
>>61218363
You can add filters to peace.
>>
>>61218394

Hello /g/uru's.

I've recently started having trouble with my DT 770's where the wire connecting to the headphone seems to have gone slightly bad since whenever it moves I get an annoying static noise, so I'm in the market for new headphones.

I've essentially worn Closed all my life, but I'm open to trying out Open.

Budget is 150-250 USD, a plus would be having the ability to jack in a new line to the headphones so I dont run into this issue again.

Guy who measured and EQ'd HJE120s the other day here. I wasn't aware until I added my filters to Rockbox that Rockbox's latest release allows for Q values down to 0.1 now. It used to be limited to 0.5. With this in mind, bass correction for these becomes much simpler: 30 Hz, -10 dB, Q 0.1. That's it. This produces the attached bass response, which is now superior to my previous results.
This means you can now EQ the HJE120 with a mere three Rockbox filters: the above bass filter and two treble peak removal filters which you'll need to listen to Sinegen to configure for your individual ear canals. An additional low shelf filter with values of gain 6 dB, Q 0.7, cutoff frequency 100 Hz will bring them in line with the Harman target.
>>
>>61220081
Pretty sure it is quite good after converting to sane audio too.
There IS value in DSD releases, as there is with HD and such. The value is getting an alternative master, which possibly sucks less.
It's nothing to do with the technology, which is placebo.

Interesting, I've spent thousands of dollars on IEMs but none were as comfortable as the HJE120, they've also got low microphonics. The stock sound is okay, not as good as other hidden gems like LG QuadBeat 3, but these are microphonic as hell.

The plannar bass is godly for sure, but I personally miss the detail and soundstage that you would expect from open headphones. Headphones like the HD800 do have this detail and soundstage, but lack in the bass compartment compared to plannar. This problem is worse with the LCD-2 than the LCD-X.

Audeze certainly makes fun sounding headphones, but I personally wouldn't buy one because I prefer a different sound signature. You also cannot lean forward while wearing them because they will just fall off your head. I guess it's good if you want to keep up a good posture.

I'm eyeing the HD600 but something I see people keep mentioning is that they're bad for electronic music due to how they handle bass. But doesn't that depend on what genres you listen to? There's lots of electronic music that isn't particularly bass-heavy. Anyone HD600 owners that listen to a lot of electronic shit that can weigh in on this?

idol trash here. I do often listen to Amiga mods and demoscene music in general. The HD600 does so fine.
There's no issue whatsoever with HD600 and electronica. It's just people who like electronica tend to like niggerbass (strong). These headphones are pretty neutral, and if anything have stronger bass than they should, but they still want more. I've found that HD600 responds very well to EQ-ing bass in. It's just... silly to do it, because they're fine as they are, really.

I quite dislike the way bass is textured on the HD600. It's sort of like getting hit in the face with a limp noodle if that makes any sense. EQing it up doesn't help much. However, it's not a big deal on songs where the bass doesn't take a front seat which.

If you think it sucks, I'd suggest something like a Fulla2 (dac+amp), to be sure you're not being chinked by your source.
But most likely, you simply don't like the FR of your MSR7. I'd suggest HD600.

Sound like a software/driver issue to me. MSR7 have low impedance of 36 Ohm i think, your onboard shouldn't have any problems with this.
Is the volume just low or do you experience some weird noise or some other issue? I have MSR7 too and both my RN3P and chinkpad have no issues with them.
My chinkpad doesn't have the cleanest sound to it and can have random static at times but that's to be expected with old cheapo onboard sound from a laptop.

>>61222330
>>61222400
Your explanations somehow make your audio chain appear really compromised.

>>61222460
>I find that vocals in music sound a bit too quiet while the instrumentals are loud
Sounds like shit recording, trash in trash out. Or maybe that's how the artist meant it to be, who knows. If you ask me male vocals can be a little underwhelming on MSR7 at times, but female vocals are excellent.
>>
>>61222500
it could be, I just torrent my FLACs off TPB
>>
>>61222460
Maybe its just FR at work, and you'd like something less v-shaped, more neutral?
If vocals seem recessed, it might be because bass and treble are deliberately made forward..
>>
>>61222530
Can you give me an example of which songs sound off to you? I'd like to test them on my MSR7.

>>61222541
http://goldenears.net/board/GR_Headphones/5398387
>>
>>61222577
The Spoils by Massive Attack is one, when I listen to them with my MSR7s plugged into the back the song is much louder but the vocals are harder to hear than what they were on my M50's plugged into the monitor
>>
>>61222577
>http://goldenears.net/board/GR_Headphones/5398387
Hmm... they're dark, but otherwise, the mids vs the bass seem like it should be alright?
>>61222599
If every output you try sounds different, then you're in serious need of a "reference" source. If you don't have some flagship-ish smartphone (they actually have decent dacs/amps) to test against, I'd seriously suggest getting that Fulla 2.
>>
>>61222632
Yeah, I think I should, at the very least it will save me from having to dick around with the pre amp in my music player when a song is too quiet
>>
>>61222599
To me it sounds normal and not recessed. Maybe your Nvidia audio driver had some kind of voice amplification enabled? I have a Dolby driver on my chinkbook with a setting for VoIP that boosts the sound. Maybe it was enabled all the time, would be kinda funny.

>>61222632
>they're dark
What no. MSR7 are not dark, rather bright. Bass is present and can reproduce everything if needed but it's not overbearing while mids are sweet, especially female vocals. Male vocals are ok but nothing special.
>>
>>61222704
>What no. MSR7 are not dark, rather bright.
That FR is confusing me. It's quite sharp down past 10k somehow.
>>
>>61222704
it could be, I should check
>>
>>61222710
Isn't dark though. The highs are crystal clear. Idk what Audio-Technica have done with the MSR7 but they've done it right. I love those headphones.
