I wanna buy a new laptop and I narrowed it down to 2 options and I wanted to ask /g/ for help to choose between them but I don't see a general thread for that and I feel like it would be a shitty thread if I made one just for that , wat do ?

Is there something inbetween urxvt and st?

I really like the latter, but the delete key never works properly, Without the patch in queus help in neovim, with patch it does not delete anything in vim and fucks up in a couple of different places.

I need the terminal that uses Xresources for colors, has scrollback and that's it.

>Clean Install Edition

What irony, I'm trying to format my computer and install Windows 8.1, but I just wanted to hear if anyone has an idea which version is best suited for me. I don't want any pre-installed bloatware updates, but can't be assed to install every update from scratch.

Any ideas?

I can confirm that both InputAutoCfg.ini and mupen64plus.cfg are displaying the correct configuration for my controller, yet when I try them in-game they're not working as intended (default layout is used).

Not sure if it is related to the thread but here it goes.

What kinds of jobs in Systems Development, or IT in general, that don't require experience on the field?

Long story short:
>Almost finishing Systems Development college but most classes were fucking awful
>Got a job as a intern with the promisse i would learn stuff related to the field
>End up doing really basic stuff, but i did my best and worked extra hours with the promisse that i would be hired after my internship program ends
>Boss says they wont be able to hire me after my internship program ends due to a funding problem

Now i am almost finishing college but i have close to no experience in the field, most things i know came from doing basic scripts and i got most of that from stack overflow. Now i have around a month or so to find a job on my field that don't require too much experience.

Yeah I was thinking Pro, but there are monthly versions like
>Windows 8 1 8in1 x64 en-US Apr2015
which is essentially just the OS + released updates till that date. I was hoping some good anon removed all bloatware and botnet telemetry updates like KB3068708 and KB3035583 beforehand. If I won't find anything useful I'll just install the stripped down version and remove updates as they come along.

Started cloning from a (possibly failing) SSD to another, using dd over usb2.0.
About 5 hours in (about 42GB copied) speeds dropped to only tens of bytes per second.
I decided fuckit and went to bed, now the next morning - 20 hours into the cloning - speeds are better but still abysmal. It managed about a GB during my sleep, and is now transferring around 200B/s.

Are the speeds because I hit a damaged block on the SSD? Will it likely return to faster speeds?

tl;dr: cloning slow - wat do

You guys don't reply to any of the questions so I never come here but I'll ask anyways.

I have a local internet connection in country B because someone I know who lives there. But I don't have a server or computer there.
I want to tunnel a connection through the router in country B, to my router in country A where I live.

In short I want to be connected to the router in country B as if I am there in person.
I want to do this so I torrent in peace because country B is lax concerning torrent stuff.

Is this possible without a computer that's turned on there 24/7?

I'm using KDE, and I want to keep my configurations for after I reinstall everything from scratch. I fucked up while trying to fix some things and now I just want to start off fresh.
Anyway, where are the configurations stored?
I would guess the home folder, but which files do I need to take with me?
Is it as simple as with other programs where you just copy and paste the dot-file and you're good?

I would recommend InkScape, shit is cash.

Temperatures didn't seem to be a problem, the CPU was at about 55 immediately after rebooting and opening the BIOS. I still have the flash drive with FreeNAS on it, is there a way I can enable some monitoring or reporting to get a better idea of what the fuck is going on?

no, while there is such thing as lossless jpeg, it's very uncommon, and NOT the same as 100 quality out of a reguar jpeg encoder (though 100 quality output might be good enough for your purposes)
if you want a fast and reasonably compressed lossless video intermediate, try x264 in lossless mode

I'm looking to get a Nintendo DS and one of those carts that you can put lots of games on. I used to have an M3 DS Real I think it was but I lost that shit so I need something new. My DS also dead.

Which is best Nintendo DS for this? I had a launch day one that lasted me about a decade. Can the newer DS's play games the older ones can't? Looking to buy brand new un-used btw.

Which cartridge should I use? I hear R4 is the best? Which version should I go for?

Cheap: R4 Gold or any clone.

SuperDSTwo is something different and more advanced than R4s which let you do way more stuff.

In a computer science class I'm taking (it's about proving the correctness of programs), we often look at example source code and refer to it as "programs". But that's actually wrong, isn't it? It's just code, not a program.

I'm asking because I'm going over my lecture notes again, and there are mentionings of "syntactically correct programs".
And that makes me wonder: can there be a program that is not syntactically correct?
Because if the syntax of the source code is wrong, the compiler/interpreter wouldn't understand it, and thus can't execute it. And thus you can't call it a program at all.

So what I'm basically asking is: is my professor a retard?

Hmm, does seem like logically correct would be more appropriate than syntactically correct. Since you are checking the program does what you intend. Presumably syntactically comes from an analogy of talking about natural language. Probably not retarded but you should bring it up with them because overloading terms isn't going to help anyone learn.

Regarding program vs code, I think the assumption is that source code directly describes a program. And it's easier to work with. And how about interpreted languages that don't get compiles?

that doesn't mean anything, the signal that drives the display runs at a fixed frequency, regardless of how often the framebuffer is updated
so even if you're running hugely intense software that is only pushing say, 20fps, the output will still be a solid 144Hz, otherwise the display will lose sync

Running mint cinnamon 18.2, fully updated. i3-5010u, 12GB ram, 120GB 850 Evo, kernel 4.10.

1) How do I lessen the time taken by grub on boot? Currently takes 4 seconds.

2) How do I lessen the time taken to load the kernel on boot? Currently takes 3.5 seconds.

3) After entering my password, the screen blanks (can still see the mouse cursor) for 5-7 seconds then my desktop loads. Once loaded everything is snappy. Why does this happen? Is it because I have an encrypted home directory?

4) I created an arch VM and installed cinnamon. I got the mint-x theme from aur. When I change the 'control' portion of the theme to anything but adawaita, menu and context spacing goes funky. Anybody have a fix?

5) Anybody have a way to automatically change the desktop background in MATE after a set time period?

i have an rx 480 and I've never had any problems with it until then, there's nothing wrong with my monitor either, since it works well on another gpu, i took the 480 out and the pc booted up fine. I thought it was some driver install gone bad so i completely reinstalled windows and uninstalled every driver but to no avail

is it fucked? I don't have a spare gpu to fall back on

I also get no audio input while using my Intel HD 5600 graphics. The audio is *there*, it shows up, but no sound comes out (inb4 turn it on; it's up at max volume)

Is it my GPU or my Mobo that is the problem? I can't seem to figure this out

Let's say I want to save all of my media to drives attached to a home server -- RAID would be unnecessary, right? My understanding is that RAID is used for redundancy to be able to keep things running in case something happens to one of the hard drives -- but all I really need for a home server is just an extra set of hard drives that I write to, say once a week, for backups. Am I missing something?
I'm confused because on some search results people talk about setting up RAID for their home servers. Maybe they want to avoid potential downtime while streaming their media?

What cable do you normally use with your 480? If you normally use HDMI that's why you're not getting any audio. HDMI carries an audio signal, VGA does not. You'll need a 3.5mm cable to bridge with the PC input on your monitor.

Artifacting of that degree usually indicates one or more components on the card has crapped out.

It would be unlikely that both the backups and the original fail so the original is the backup until I would get a new backup drive.

Kodi runs on just about anything, rpi, Android, winblows, Linux.
I have an old desktop (sempron 3300+, 2GB ram) running mint mate. You'll want something a bit newer - a 5350 w/4gb would be more than enough. Wired is preferred, if wireless I'd want ac wifi.
I just stuffed a couple hdds inside, setup samba shares (right click - share) and connected to the network.

My flow is to download something, place it in the correct folder, let Kodi scrape it, then export the library to separate files.
Other media centers running Kodi have the samba shares as sources. They'll check for info next to the files first, preventing excessive slow scraping.

Since everything is shared via samba it's accessible from Windows, osx, Linux, and Android.

Logging into the text console is nigh instant - less than a second. Same results whether logged in on another console or not, same whether I performed a cold boot or not.

Feh would work, I was hoping for something a bit more normie friendly for family. Guess I'll just stick with cinnamon or unity for them

Excuse me, /g/entoo men, but I have two questions to ask: 1. What is the both the simplest and most minimal C IDE and 2. How do I compile a program/source?
>>
>>61223536
Anyone? They do not work and I fear they are dead or something...

>>61223880
Ok -- that's a good point; thank you.
I'm going to go with no raid, but have backup drives in the tower as well as an external enclosure that will backup the backups.

Just make sure the contacts are clear and the solder hasn't de-soldered. Have you tried plugging shit in or are you worried you will blow your mobo up? Because while that is very unlikely (maybe the ustream hub/controller) it is possible depending on how the thing is wired. I killed two mobos with a dodgy graphics card before I figured out what was up.
>>
>>61223892
But what about the new Thinkpads like T470 ?
>>
>>61224076
I tried plugging in various flash drives and they did not work, at first it was just the front ports, and I though it was just the cable that was not seated correctly, but when I tried the back ports a few weeks later, they also 'died', too.
>>

you probably don't really need one if your employer doesn't provide it
just buy a chromebook (used) and vnc into your desktop

I'm not sure if I'm going crazy or if something fucked up recently. Over the past few days I've noticed that my text looks worse than normal, but I haven't made any changes. To me it almost looks like there's a white glow around the letters.
I zoomed in to take a look, but instead of seeing a glow, I noticed that the letters aren't displayed consistently, and highlighted a few examples.

Am I fucked in the head or is something wrong here?

I've been using my LG G2 since it launched and loved everything about it, but as of last night it seems to be fried. The usb port literally heated to the point of melting the casing and scorching the internal boards. I'm not worried about losing anything as I took regular backups and all of my apps sync through Google.
Best phones in my price range seem to be the LG G6 or SGS8. I like the idea of the wide-angle/dual lens on the G6 and 4k 30fps recording, but the S8's processor and front-facing camera are marginally better. I've got reservations about Samsung because of their exploding phones. I'm curious to hear if anyone here has either of these phones and can weigh in.

Of all the reasons to avoid them, that is by far the dumbest. Any manufacturer can have a defect like that, even apple. It was one model, and doesn't say anything about them, except that they're going to try damn hard to make sure that shit doesn't happen again.
>>
>>61224387
You're not going to notice minor differences to phone processors or camera. If you like the G6, get it. Honestly you'd probably get more out of 10 minutes screwing around at the store than anything us or the stats could tell you.

What are some good laptops for just browsing ? Like i want it to be good because it's gonna be my only computer. So it would be better if it's durable. My budget is $ 1500 but don't recommend something $300 please, recommend me something around that price

What you need maxes out at $600 with IPS and SSD. If you're intent on wasting money, get a macbook. If you actually need your computer for something that couldn't be handled competently by a 5 year old tablet processor, by all means clarify for us.

Why does HTML/CSS support javascript and nothing else? If you have a program written in any other language how do you display it on the web? Just link it's file location like with pictures?

They're pretty close, but I'd get the Linksys for slightly superior firmware and performance plus I've never had a problem with a Linksys device

>>
>>61225085
>Why does HTML/CSS support javascript and nothing else?

Its not about the languages, the browsers are the ones who support JavaScript.

>If you have a program written in any other language how do you display it on the web?

Your WebServer must execute the program and return the code to the navigator, WebServer are made to use only a few languages in mind and some languages need their own kind of server (like JSP).

A typical scenario would be using a form, which contain data, this data is passed to the program by apache or nginx as parameters, then the program for example a PHP application would dynamically build a web, return the finished page.
>>
>>61225031
You of course mean the front ones, right? I assume that to replace the back ones I would have to desolder them or some other process that's more complicated.
Oh, well, guess I'll let my old desktop die and rest in peace. Still, thanks for the help

I just updated my system (Manjaro) and suddenly mpv won't open, and I get this error:

recompiling mpv didn't fix it, nor did reinstalling libbluray

mpv works, you'll need to recompile mpv (you said you did, but double check what you did)

anyone had luck repartitioning their android phone?
i'm looking into it, as the stock partitions are really wasteful, i've looked into it, and i should be able to easily claim over 4G of space, and this is on a 16G device, so that's a notable amount of potential extra space
