Reposting from old thread.

I just updated my system (Manjaro) and suddenly mpv won't open, and I get this error:
mpv: error while loading shared libraries: libbluray.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

recompiling mpv didn't fix it, nor did reinstalling libbluray

It really depends on the model, intel chips run hotter than AMD on average (or do I have that backwards? I think it used to be that way anyways)

The best practice is to RTFM for whatever specific device you are asking about. My CPU/GPU run at 60-75c under load all the time but then again all my hardware is 11+ years old so it might not have much bearing on the situation.
>>
>>61225477
For extended periods 70 for CPU and 80 for GPU

First for No

But here's my question. I have a PCPP list with a 7700k and a 1070. With everything else, it will cost about $2220 Canadian with tax included (13%). I was thinking of getting a phone (Galaxy S8 or LG G6). The G6 is about $700-800 Canadian, and the Galaxy S8 is about $1000+ Canadian. Which seems like a better investment? I need a new phone, but I need a nice computer. Help decide.

Can someone help me figure out conky? I just installed it for the first time and got a theme that I thought looked neat. I added the theme and it looks messed up. How can I tweak it?

It's the theme called Onsea, and I want it in the lower right corner with a black background and a white outline border, and I want it to display system temperature. How can I accomplish this? What do I add to the conkyrc file? Can someone give me a quick rundown on conky configging? Google hasn't given me any good tutorials.

Pic related is my desktop. I can barely see the conky screen.

Every time I try to sync time and date the internet I get the time wrong.

Also the time in the bios keeps changing, I thought it could be that the cmos had died but then I got a second hand laptop, and noticed the same behavior, is it ghosts that are changing the time in the bios or wtf???

Why does it change to a wrong timezone?

For example
>set right time on bios
>initiate windows or linux
>right time, wrong timezone.
>then set the time to sync to the internet, it gives me a wrong time, the one that the wrong timezone should be.
>have to manually adjust timezone and time, every time.

I have a weird internet problem that seems to be happening because of my PC as I have the same internet on another PC and it works just fine there.
My guess it is something to do with DNS fuckery, but I am not sure. Basically sites load slow the first time I open them. Then everything within the site works fine for a while, but after X amount of time (10 minutes are probably enough) it goes back to being slow the first time. One of the things that didn't happen before is video buffering on youtube the first time I open the video. You can see the circles going in circle for a second.
One of the weirder things it is that the longer the PC is on the bigger the problem gets. In 24 hours it becomes a lot slower to open any page. Youtube videos might not even load and just get the buffering thing until I refresh the page. Sometimes I can get more than a week of the internet working just fine (without turning off my PC). But then I restart it or something and the problem appears. And from there on I can restart a lot and spam ipconfig /flushdns, but nothing works until one day it just disappears again.
And yes, I have tried different versions of the lan drivers.
So is it possible that the motherboard's lan has been fucked and I should get a lan card? Or maybe it is something to do with my ISP? If not, any other solutions?
Please read.

Does the problem still persist when booting a live linux distro? If so, it's not windows.

Well, I certainly haven't tried that, because I have no linux installed.
It is a switch and cables. The other PC has another switch connected to this switch on the way. So it can't be the main switch.

nah, i had some problems with a raid configuration not allowing me to write past 50%, despite every utility from web panel to df to mdadm -D saying that it was only half full.

i created a new array, (incidentally) changed the raid level and want to make sure i dont run into a similar problem, so im testing this way rather than doing a transfer that could take a day or two before finding out this array has the same problem

any estimation on how long this will take for 8TB? its on a degraded (still writing parity blocks) raid5 array

My problem is I can't find the advice that told me what to do. I know I just have to go into regedit and change that one value and reboot. Does anyone know what I'm talking about/sopose to find the display setting? I'm using igpu but i dont think that matters

Look up the advertized battery life for your laptop, and subtract 20-30% for marketing bullshit. Or find out from other reviewers whats normal for your model. Plenty of laptops get less than that. You can check powersaving mode windows is on, and see if there's any OEM utilities for power management. If bloatware is wasting resources, you could try a clean install. Or use a lightweight linux distribution. But it sounds like your model just doesn't have killer battery.

It was advertised with 8 hours of battery, so I'll optimistically expect 6. I've kept power saving on and stuff, it's just that I'm a freak about power because I'm joining uni now and will need to have the damn thing with me for taking notes, referring e books and such. Like I said, it's brand new, so no bloatware or anything.
But now I'm intrigued. How could a linux distro help, now? I've never used anything but windows about 13 years now, and have never felt an inclination to switch. Advantages of installing Linux?
But if you think that battery life is about normal, I'll leave it at that, and thanks for your help.

Manjaro is sad because of shit like this making it actually harder to use than Arch. I had a friend recently install Manjaro after months of me trying to talk him out of it. He needed to install the nvidia driver. I told him it was easy, the package is just called nvidia. Not on fucking Manjaro apparently. All the packages had weird extra info in them. I told him I honestly wasn't sure which one he should use, and that Manjaro was just weird. I felt bad, but I definitely warned him. I have even showed him Arch Anywhere on another machine. He wouldn't properly explain why he wanted Manjaro. He never even mentioned ease of installing, and I can't think of why else he installed it.

1% every 5 min is 8.3 hours. 1% every 4 min is 6.6 hours. Although the numbers it tells you near 100% tend to be bullshit. Unless you installed windows yourself, there's probably bloatware. If everything you do is in a browser, then linux cuts out a lot of bullshit with updates and managing software, it's a lot lighter on resources and virtually never gets malware. You might consider a dual boot for when you're trying to stretch your battery. Or shell out $100 on an external battery (if they don't make larger ones for your model).

I have a laptop that I use as my main pc. I currently use it's display, a monitor above it (vga connection?), then hdmi to my tv. I had planned to upgrade to a desktop build, but now that will be 2-3 months way.

Is there a way to add another monitor, so I can stash the laptop under my actual desktop, so I can have more desk space? in other words, close my laptop, store it "keyboard drawer" in my desk, two monitors and keyboard+mouse on desk, but still have hdmi to my tv? The laptop only has the one hdmi and the one vga out....

>>

Documents are easy shit for any OS. If you don't have any specific programs you would need windows for constantly you'd be fine. Honestly if you're not strapped for disk space I'd throw Lubuntu on there just for the fuck of it.

Wifi/screen/processor are the biggest power draws, so cutting back on any of them helps.

You could try switching it on with the case open (it won't overheat if you only switch it on briefly) and looking for lights that come on, or don't come on, on the individual components.

Computer needing to 'warm up' is usually bad wet caps on the power supply or motherboard. For anything built in the last decade, wet caps generally don't occupy critical positions except in the power supply.

> Is it a CMOS battery issue?
Probably not. The board should at least be able to get into the BIOS screen with no battery installed. Corrupted CMOS memory can prevent your computer from booting though.

To reset the CMOS memory, disconnect the computer from wall power, remove the battery, and short the motherboard's battery contacts with a screwdriver or whatever for a few seconds.

Anyone ever tried Huawei products? Their new laptop looks like something I might be interested in but I'm not sure of the company itself.

So, I'm trying to display 240p through VGA to a CRT monitor, and I know the way to do it is to create it at 120hz so it can reach 31khz and so, but the IGPU (Intel HD 3000) doesn't show it properly, it gets to 640x480 at 120hz and the display gets upscaled. Could installing a Linux distro make it work? It's for playing in Retroarch so Lakka would be the best choice

So I decided to try using Windows again and after grafting Cygwin, Gow and various auxiliary programs into one big unholy mess it's actually fairly pleasant to use. Only problem is that I slapped it on a spare hard drive so as to avoid messing with my Linux install and my laptop only has one slot.

My question is this: If I buy a new drive, partition it, and rsync my new Windows install over, will it work?

I made the switch from Chrome to Vivaldi not too long ago and liked it fine at first. But now the damn thing is taking up half of my computer's memory and freezing randomly. I haven't done anything differently since installing. Wat do?

Say, this is my first transaction with BTC, I bought the necessary amount, received the address I'm supposed to send my coinz to, but then I had some issues with my wallet where I forgot a PIN mandatory for every transaction, which took me a day to fix.

Is the given address still active? How long does a BTC address last for?

The 850 Pro will last more because the slower speeds and that its a 3D MLC SSD.
But 960 will last a good amount of time too, we are talking about 8 years+ of rough use.

Dont buy 2D SSDs.

>>
>>61240864

No, TrueCrypt was developed by based Paul.
One of the few pieces of software we're 100% sure isn't backdoored.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Le_Roux
>Le Roux would frequently post angry, sarcastic and offensive messages, including harsh verbal attacks against Australia as well as racist comments.
>Le Roux was known for his racist views, which he expressed in Usenet postings and towards his employees and which is consistent with his 2007 activities in Zimbabwe aimed at giving seized farm land back to white farmers. He did employ numerous Israelis in key positions, although one former call center manager states this was mostly owed to Israelis being the “cheapest, honest, smartest labor that he could find” rather than fondness.
>The day after his arrival, Le Roux signed a proffer agreement, agreeing to plead guilty to these two charges in exchange for immunity against prosecution for any other crimes he might admit to.[3][17] Immediately after, he admitted to arranging or participating in seven murders for which he thus could not be prosecuted.

How can a website detect that you have a certain program running?
>>
>>61241042
User survey.
>>
>>61241196
Is there a way to mask that you have that program running? Or even disable the check for it?
>>
>>61240858
Asking your VPN, that one will depend on how much your privacy cares about your privacy.
Most dont care at all and wont risk themselves.
>>
>>61240858
They don't need to. If you log in to website A as Bob Johnson they don't need your IP to find out who you are. But there are VPNs that don't keep any logs. This doesn't make you 100% safe though. If the FBI gets a bomb threat from someone running Pale Moon on Gentoo with a 1440x2560 screen resolution using vpn provider X with ip X, and someone then connects to facebook or whereever with Pale Moon on Gentoo with the same resolution and the same VPN provider but a different IP it's not very hard either.

I know there's a good answer to this, But whenever i ask someone they just tell me to watch this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pcSlowAhvUk&feature=youtu.be
and i'm terrible at paying attention to long speeches.

Overheating for me is 90°C or more.

Like the fan started going really loud and it completely shut off, I opened it up and there's a very slight burnt smell in there but after I waited a few minutes it booted up fine, not sure if this caused any long term damage or what?
>>
>>61242012
If your computer shutoffs is because it hit the emergency thermal shutdown temperature(102°C-104°C).

Let me guess AMD?
Probably you will need to buy a new heatsink fan if this happened tho.
