>Assemble your parts list
https://pcpartpicker.com/
>How to assemble a PC, select components & more (kind of outdated)
https://wiki.installgentoo.com/index.php?title=Build_a_PC

If you want help:
>State the budget for your build (and country if not the USA).
>List games/software you use often, as well as your monitor resolution + refresh rate.
>Clarify your goal for build improvements: lower price or improved specs?

CPUs:
>G4560 - Budget builds (<$500)
>R5 1400 - if you can't afford better or specifically need 8 threads but not a very powerful CPU
>R5 1500x - Buy the 1600 instead
>R5 1600 - Best value for higher fps gaming / mixed usage; Get a 1600x if you don't OC
>R7/Xeon/Threadripper - Compute/Multitask/mixed use; Not required for just gaming.

GPUs:
>Integrated CPU Graphics - Desktop stuff and very light games
>RX 560 and GTX 1050Ti - Lower end budget cards, drop settings on newer games
>RX570 - 1080p@60hz at high, running most maxed older games at 144+hz.
>RX580 and GTX1060 6GB - 1080p@60hz maxed, 1440p@60hz at lower settings; Go for the RX580 if you can.
>GTX 1070 - 1080p@144hz /1440p@60hz at high
>GTX 1080 - 1080p@144hz / 1440p@60hz maxed, 4k@60hz in a few games; Probably the highest end card you need for 1080p/1440p.
>GTX 1080 Ti - 1440p@144 hz and 4k@60hz maxed/high in many games; You're kind of going overboard with this one.
>AMD GPUs are suffering a lack of stock and Nvidia a rise in price thanks to miners

RAM:
>Check your Mobo QVL before buying any RAM
>Ryzen benefits from high speed RAM

General:
>ALWAYS LOOK AT PRODUCT REVIEWS!
>Always consider an SSD. Try buying a large SSD for what you'd pay for your SSD+HDD combined, and add a HDD later
>NVMe SSDs aren't for a faster OS boot, they're for productivity/scratch disk/VMs. NVMe and M.2 are not the same thing, M.2 is a form factor.
>The Ryzen lineup comes with exceptionally good stock coolers. (with the exception of the 1600X) consider using them over any sub 35USD cooler.

Would I regret using an 8c16t Ryzen chip for a server? Here's the situation.
Gaming and overall build already done
>1700X
>Asus ROG X370 board
>32GB ddr4-2400

I was looking to get a 1600X, ASRock taichi X370, and 16GB of the fastest ram I can find. The 1600X and ram would be swapped into the gaming build.

I know everyone will say wait for Threadripper, but they're showing 180w tdp. I'm looking for low power use as this server will be on at all times. I intend to underclock/volt the 1700X to get as low as possible. If I can get the 1700X under 50w I'd be happy. My dual core Haswell Pentium does 42w. Does all this sound like a good idea?

I have 2 questions:
i'm going to upgrade my old build, I already got a 580 and i'm thinking in getting a r1600, a gigabyte ab350 gaming 3 and some ddr4 ram. I already have my old corsair 600W psu and I don't see a reason to upgrade it, is 600W enough for this new build?
my second question is I see that this mobo only supports r5 after some bios update, will my cpu be supported from the get go?

>>
Hey, all. I'm trying to install windows 8.1 on my pc that I built from a properly formatted usb drive. After selecting boot from usb on the BIOS, it just goes to a black screen and the light on the usb goes off. I've looked around and could find nothing. The attached picture is my build. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Planning on getting a new CPU, Motherboard, and RAM in Q4. I see ryzen is pretty much all that is suggested here and while I want to support AMDs efforts, I also want something that just werks like my 3770k does.

Towards the end of the CPU's life, I usually overclock as high as I physically can if that effects the decision. What should I get?

Yes anon, it's called being an adult, and admitting when intel or whatever company has 1 (ONE!!) product more fit for SOME use case scenarios, such as PURE GAMING in this case.

As pretty much all tech reviewers and youtube channels agree also.

I agree, fellow Ryzen owner. Intel are massively superior, this I can't deny. I bought my AMD CPU because I'm a poor Indian that lives in a mud hut, but I know that others can afford the best performance, so I recommend superior Intel products. My PC build is actually done. I put together a GTX 1070, 16gb of ddr4 a 500gb ssd, 2tb data drive and some other stuff. I skimped on a sound system, I'll just go with head phones for now.

The only thing I'm actually stuck on is a good monitor. I'm replacing an older PC, and a dying monitor and while I've built lots of PCs over the years... I know nothing about good monitors. What's a good way to go in the 200-300 range? If I can go lower than that it'd be great. Maybe later I can do a really nice monitor that's really expensive, but right now my monitor keeps dimming on me and I don't have unlimited money to throw at the moment.

I found one on amazon for 179.99, and saw one at walmart for 198.99. Both were 27 inch. Both are samsung. The 198 had a weird bendy screen that I know nothing about. The reviews for both are all positive but they are particularly informative either.

if comp games like dota, lol, csgo, overwatch etc then pick 1080p 24" 144hz

>>
A question for you tech savvy anons. Is
Intel Core i5 6402P coupled with
GeForce GTX1050Ti 4GB and 8 GB of RAM enough for comfortable gaming? I can't afford anything extravagant and building my own isn't a possibility atm, but I saw a prebuilt with those within my price range.
>>
>>61142947
you realize you cannot possibly feel a difference between 4ms and 1ms?
"The Viewsonic XG2703-GS uses a 27" 2560x1440 resolution 8 Bit AUO AHVA panel (M270DAN02.3), a nearly grain free matte coating, has excellent color presets, a nice dark matte black bezel which increases the perceived black depth (dark matte grey is the best), very fast pixel response times and a 165hz refresh rate. G-Sync (compatible Nvidia GPU required) works from 30-165hz/FPS, and eliminates screen tearing and lag. The Viewsonic XG2703-GS also has ULMB (back-light strobing, excellent 1080p scaling unlike the Asus PG279Q, and superior 60hz overdrive with less overshoot ghosting than the Acer XB271HU. The Viewsonic XG2703 is the best all around 27" 1440p AHVA 144-165hz monitor with Nvidia G-Sync for PC and console gaming, and watching 1080p content."
>>
>>61142964

Mostly single player. I like modding up the visuals of games when I can. I do play some AAA games, but I often play them much later after price drops/sales.

I'll write down 1440p 60hz IPS and look through monitors that match that.

I don't do a lot of comp games anymore. Sometimes, rarely I'll go and play an MMO or multiplayer Action RPG (torchlight/d2/d3/titan quest style stuff) with friends but that's not my typical gaming.

All I want to do is get a new hard drive that is larger than 1TB. I'm considering getting a 3TB or 4TB at the least, maybe larger. What brand should I consider for doing that? I've had trouble with Western Digital and Seagate several years ago and I don't know if they have ever gotten better, but I probably wouldn't prefer those. Is this is sensible build for my 62 year old mom? Her typical tasks would consist of general web usage, ripping CDs via iTunes, watching DVDs and streaming HD video. The most intensive thing it would have to do is probably 1080p 10-bit h.264 playback.
I wanted to keep costs low, while having a small footprint. My initial thought was the NUC line, but I wanted something a bit cheaper plus I remembered my mom still uses optical media a lot. I remembered my schools had lots of small form factor Dell machines that seemed to be pretty decent machines for what they were. Does anybody have experience with buying used computers from this line or similar ones? Is the build quality good enough that buying used is a pretty safe bet?

In a previous thread I was told I should get an SSD. I would like to, but the Dell Optiplex 390 SFF only has 2 SATA ports. My mom has a large CD collection that she would like to rip and she would also appreciate having certain movies and shows stored locally so they'd be available even if they were removed from Netflix or the internet service gets interrupted (not that uncommon here). Is a 7200 RPM drive suitable for normies, or should I look at hybrid drives?

B150 boards will require a BIOS update to work with Kaby Lake, some sellers offer such a service and some boards come with already compatible BIOS, check on that. Kaby Lake boards are B250.
Rest looks reasonable, Corsair VS is a potential housefire but unless you put it under high load you're fine. Corsair 100 is decent but usually overpriced, look for cheaper alternatives. What about a GPU?1050Ti will fit in there.

Hey boys, not sure if this is the thread to ask in, but here goes. I'm updating my gfs shitty pc. Part of that upgrade is a new heatsink. I purchased a cool master hyper 212 evo because budget, but ran into this issue when installing it. The panel that mounts the heatsync needs to be screwed in from behind the PC. This is a problem because with my motherboard already mounted there's absolutely no room back there to screw in the nuts. Every other heatsink I've used I could just slide the mount panel in back and secure it with screws from the front, however this one absolutely requires you to secure it with nuts behind the motherboard. My question is, given that I can't secure the panel from behind, do you know of any heatsink that would work (just requires the back mounting panel to be slid into place then secured with screws from the front)? There's no way I'm taking out her motherboard and remounting it.
>>
>>61144510
yeah the b150 comes with the bios updated, i could change the psu for an evga 500B, and about the gpu the price of 1050ti is 6000 pesos, the same as the whole build

If you wanna clock beyong 4.5GHz then thermal will get really bad, i wouldn't recommend doing it without delidding but it's possible and the temperatures should still be somewhat "safe" up to 4.8GHz
I wouldn't recommend it though. Sudden temperature changes, which is what will happen, is the best way to kill your hardware.
>>
>>61144648
I'd say get 3200 or even 3600MHz RAM + a cooler, as it won't be that much more expensive compared to your total build cost (+$70~ at worst) but provide very big performance increase in all three of the tasks you do.

>>
>>61144733

This is just stupid. There's no point in getting this CPU + cooler + mobo + PSU combo if you're not going to use it.
Either learn how to OC, it really isn't hard, or drop down to locked parts or go with a Ryzen X chip, those have XFR which is more or less automatic OC.

>>61144579
EVGA 500B is a proven PSU, good choice for budget builds.
>1050ti is 6000 pesos
What the fuck.... G4560 costs like 50-70 EUR/USD and 1050Ti 100-150 EUR/USD. What the fuck is that price, the 1050Ti is a budget card ffs. What about RX 550 or 560? Or anything at all..

>>61144648
>Gaming, Programming, Rendering etc.
Good that you've chosen the 1700, that's where it excells. Overall the build looks decent but if you want to OC i recommend you get an aftermarket cooler. OC on the Wraith cooler can get a little hot.
Mobo is fine but personally i'd go with a X370 for better VRM, ALC1220 and more SATA ports. RAM.. well, you know about the issues, i guess. You could invest in Samsung b-die, after all productivity profits from better RAM the most.
HDD is decent but imho invest in a HGST 7k6000, you have the money to do so. Alternatively i prefer the Toshiba P300 for standard builds. Got the 2TB version and it's fast and quiet.
PSU is obsolete, get EVGA G3 or if you're running 24/7 a platinum or titanium PSU. It will push your build towards 3k but i think you can afford it.

It's a terrible idea. You want positive pressure in your case. Those fans aren't removing air from any area that's going to get hot. All they're going to do is choke your graphics card's fans and help create negative pressure overall, whilst not actually lowering any temperatures. Enjoy your dust.
>>
>tfw all I wanted was a 1070 but thanks to cryptofaggots the price for one is retarded
>>
>>61145329

The arrow was actually just pointing on the fans not indicating airflow direction. It's reverse. It'd feed cool air to gpu. Only problem with this setup is they cannot be safely fastened and will vibrate some, as another guy already pointed out here.

The one thing that I'm still not really sure about is how good the i3-2120 would be at playing back 1080p 10-bit h.264 video. I need a good CPU cooler for my Ryzen 5 1600X

I was going for the Cryorig H7, but it looks like the brackets to mount them to AM4 aren't going to be shipped out for a long while. They just don't have their shit together.

I'm probably going to get a CM 212 EVO since they ship their bracket quickly.

Anybody else have to deal with this bracket shit?

Whatever Vega will be, it won't be anything revolutionnary, seing as the "Pro" Vega isn't that powerful. No, you didn't make a mistake. When AMD make something good, they demo it a lot, like Ryzen. When they don't, they might hype it up still, but avoid showing benchmarks and demos.

>Assemble your parts list
https://pcpartpicker.com/
>How to assemble a PC, select components & more (kind of outdated)
https://wiki.installgentoo.com/index.php?title=Build_a_PC

If you want help:
>State the budget for your build (and country if not the USA).
>List games/software you use often, as well as your monitor resolution + refresh rate.
>Clarify your goal for build improvements: lower price or improved specs?

CPUs:
>G4560 - Budget builds (<$500)
>R5 1400 - if you can't afford better or specifically need 8 threads but not a very powerful CPU
>R5 1500x - Buy the 1600 instead
>R5 1600 - Best value for higher fps gaming / mixed usage; Get a 1600x if you don't OC
>i7 7700k - only for 144hz
>R7/Xeon/Threadripper - Compute/Multitask/mixed use; Not required for just gaming

GPUs:
Coin miners have driven price up and stock down, waiting to buy a GPU might be wiser
>Integrated CPU Graphics - Desktop stuff and very light games
>GTX 1050(Ti) - Lower end budget cards, drop settings on newer games, RX560 beaten by both
>RX570 - 1080p@60hz at high, running most maxed older games at 144+hz
>RX580 and GTX1060 6GB - 1080p@60hz maxed, 1440p@60hz at lower settings; Go for the R X580 if you can
>GTX 1070 - 1080p@130hz /1440p@60hz at high
>GTX 1080 - 1080p@144hz / 1440p@60hz maxed, 4k@60hz in a few games; Probably the highest end card you need for 1080p/1440p
>GTX 1080Ti - 1440p@144hz and 4k@60hz maxed/high in many games

Yes, actually. I know because I managed to crash my 650W PSU during games with an overclocked 6600K and two GPU's. One of the GPU's was low power as well, barely being used. (I was running a VM, one on the host and one in the guest) If two GPU's was too much for a decent 650W power supply, then subtract the low power host and it had to have been around 500W total. Once I upgraded my PSU it hasn't crashed since.

I bought one of those new 75hz LG IPS monitors with a backlight strobing mode, and I get triple images when the strobing mode is enabled, there's a solid ghost in front and behind moving objects, according to both GTAV and testufo.com. Not traditional ghosting, just a solid, albeit translucent clone of the moving object.

Does this mean the backlight is strobing at 150hz or even 225hz, instead of 75hz? Or are the artifacts just a caveat of cheaper, less precise strobing? It was a $150 monitor after all.

At any rate, the motion clarity with the strobing on is superb in TF2, so I can't say I'm disappointed.

>power adapter:
550W Corsair Vengeance Series
>CPU-cooler:
be quiet! Pure Rock Slim

Paid 1200 bucks for it.

Everything runs nice and smooth, performance is very good BUT there is one fucking problem.

Something rattles in there. It is not one of the 4 build in fans (GPU, CPU, 1 front, 1 back) I stopped everyone of them manually and the rattling was still there. This drives me insane. What could it be?

Also pic related blinks all the time even if I do not use the PC and no program is being executed

Of course it is a physical problem. You don't have to access the hard drive or power adapter.
