PCMCIA is more expensive and due to age, probably wouldnt perform as well and id need an antenna for many models I could get for cheap
Also I took out my PCMCIA brackets to get better cooling (sounds like BS but it does actually work)
If youre running something so old it doesnt have USB you should by all means use PCMCIA
But this was a 7$ upgrade for an old ass machine and I think anyone with a _20/30/40 with a spare usb port should get one

Swapping *230 keyboard with *220 one is totally worth it, guys. It kinda just feels better for typing. It's so easy, just a few screws, some electrical tape and a little file work. It works without any controller flashing, but some of the buttons will be mislabeled. You can get used to it, though.

I was just fucking with you. My T40 still needs work (and I pray to god I can get replacement keyboard cheap because too lazy to clean it).
It's often hard decision when GNU/Linux can do a lot more than XP but the support for games and other weird software is non existant on Ubuntu or Linux in general. Not worth the time to fuck around with wine.
>I'm not retarded and I can avoid malware and shit
I was thinking. Even if you get malware and your hdd gets encrypted, does it really matter? I mean you can always nuke the hdd and install the soft again. But then I am not sure how would I nuke the hdd safely without using USB devices. Would it need Cd and right soft to do the job (like gparted)
Nevertheless, I have thought of getting a usb wlan due its convenience, so I don't have to configure a shit ton of networking to create complicated system when each machine can connect to the main router.

Also support on Linux on a shitty HP laptop that I have have got me insane. This stupid shit and shitty linux drivers just won't work the way it's supposed to. It's all so tiresome. Might as well install gentoo on this.

No, if you're looking for upgradable GPUs you need a laptop with MXM graphics.

The thing is that modern ThinkPads are heavily criticized from old models by enthusiasts. These are the 'problems', they don't meet the standard of the old guard.

The T440 can have its touchpad replaced with the T450.
>if I have to do that, I might as well buy a T450
THERE YOU GO SHIT FUCK, SOLVED YOUR FUCKING ISSUE

Oh and guess what dipshit. All good ThinkPads have non-gaming GPUs, so gaming will SUCK.

You could get an M6600, swap in a 7970, 680m or try an 880m from Alienware machines.

Honestly you should just a gaming laptop, because you're literally basing performance off just gaming and not what they were meant for.

Don't ask for a recommendation when you don't even talk about your budget.

So I already have a t460s running arch and an x1 carbon running Ubuntu. But I wanted something that I could put into checked baggage while traveling that was both cheap and durable so I picked up a 3rd gen yoga x11e last week. Its a bit slow but man is it durable. Works great with Linux too.

Yeah it doesn't have a track point but I really don't care as I don't use it anyway. The trackpad leaves a bit to be desired but for $300 I am pretty happy. Especially given the 8 hours of battery life I am getting out of it.

Let's be honest here, popping out your Thinkpad's keyboard for the first time is daunting. It always feels like it's about to snap or that you'll damage internal parts.

It isn't and you won't, but that's still a big hurdle to jump over if someone's never done any computer work themselves.

So im looking for more software for my Thinkpad 380ED that i can move via floppy disks.
I just dont have CD's to burn and im a broke ass motherfucker.
Also space is a concern, i have 2.1gb of space on the 380ED, in comparison the 6 albums on my T42 take up 608mb of space.

So i just want fun software. Sony SoundForge 4.5 was on there when i got it and its a blast to play with, but the piano it comes with cant actually be recorded? It requires either an actual piano to be plugged in via a sound card (guess what laptop from the 90's had dedicated sound ports, none) or a virtual piano.
Well i found a virtual piano and a wav visualizer, which are neat, and then i noticed the file size.
20 fucking kilobytes each. 20kb, thats fucking i could shove hundreds of copies of these programs on a floppy disk, its awesome
Why isnt more stuff like this today?
Theres a small array but still a decent set of sounds mashed into 20kb in this virtual piano.
Even if there were like 5000 midi sounds in it, it would still probably be under 1mb of space.
This is some god tier programming here.
http://www.pablosoftwaresolutions.com/
Any other suggestions for software like this? It can be anything, i just want some stuff to play around with on the machine.

Pic is my T42 testing it out, i have to move files from this to my G40 to put it on a floppy, then the G40 to the 380ED, and i cant be bothered right now

I have a T430 with a 9 cell Lenovo battery and the battery hit its programmed die date and gave out. Literally overnight it went from holding a full charge that lasted hours to being incapable of charging.

Now I'm super pissed and don't want to feed Lenovo's battery scam but I read that this laptop won't boot if the battery isn't official Lenovo.

So am I fucked and I have to buy a $90 Lenovo 9 cell that is programmed to die in two years? Or are there any third party batteries that will work?

Gayman'. I've used Thinkpads in the past and can really appreciate everything they bring to the table, especially the robustness and dependability.

>inb4 gaming laptop reee

I know, desktops are better. I have one at home. But I work on a ship, so I actually need the portability in a laptop because I can't take the desktop with me. I don't have enough wall outlets for everything either. Plus, I want it to have some parity for a few years.

dafuq? I've been using chinkshit housefire batteries on my x220/x220t for 4 years with no problems. Is this a thing on the newer series?
>>
>>61096866
I'm sort of in your position but not on a ship. I'm going to be moving around a bit for the next year so I want to cut down to one computer because that's what the insurance will cover, and have it be relatively portable.
I bought a T470 and an Akitio Node and both should be coming soon.
I've spent the equivalent of $1340 on the laptop and the Node, but I didn't need to buy a GPU because I already have a GPU I'm going to use in it

If you do decide the T470 and eGPU route, get a Mantiz MZ-02. It's only a bit more expensive than the Node, but has USB ports and a SATA connector. I didn't get it because after shipping and taxes it would have been extremely expensive

I...did not actually know that was a thing. That might work out even better, because I've got a GTX 970 in my desktop right now that I was about to upgrade when I got paid off.
>>
>>61097024
Only problem with an eGPU is that you need to plug a monitor in to the eGPU to get the best performance. If you have the video pass back through to the laptop screen, expect to see anywhere from 10% to 20% loss of performance.
>>
>>61097040
Oh. That might put a damper on things for the obvious reasons. Is that in general with laptop screens, or just older generations?

Is there any recommendations on the newer 2 in 1 machines that are now making their way to refurbishment places? x230 has a much better IGU (50% better) and also better battery life. Problem is that (imo) the keyboard is not as good. You can swap in the x220 keyboard with a mod and a firmware flash tho.

I would recommend the x230, and if the keyboard is annoying then do the mod.

If the GPU is dead youre going to either have to bake the mainboard, and hope for the best, or get a replacement
An SSD is easy, any 2.5" PATA ssd will do, or a PATA to msata or something for an msata ssd
The gpu is a BGA chip soldered to the board and its not replaceable without some very special tools

If you can get a functioning board for under 20 youre still in the realm of "not wasting too much money" but any more and it would be better to just get a working T4x machine
I bought a 15" T42 for 10$ and found it had no HDD and the screen was dead
So I took the ram, processor, cooler and other little bits like the caddy cover and keyboard as spares for my working T42 instead
Wasnt worth dropping another 15-20$ on a screen and more on a new hdd

How is a kaby-lake processor "on par with an ivy bridge?"
>>
>>61097190
It's dependent on the bandwidth of the connection, and the amount of data being sent to the monitor. An Expresscard 1x 2.0 is not a huge amount of bandwidth, but it's enough that you can run even the most recent games in medium at 1440p with say a 770, but you run that signal back into the laptop screen, even if it's 1366x768, you're going to see a significant drop in framerate. This is less of an issue in higher bandwidth thunderbolt setups, but laptops with thunderbolt are likely to have far higher resolution screens so it's still a problem.

I was going to buy a new T470 in August but now I just might wait for Raven Ridge laptops because they're going to destroy intel ones in both CPU and graphics performance while being cheaper and using less power and having a greater battery life.

But I need a laptop until the raven ridge laptops come out. I currently have a Dell Latitude e6320.

Should I spend ~$250 on upgrading the screen to a 1400x900, RAM to 8G and buying an SSD HD caddy to replace the optical drive

>>61104646
It's not about "switching" and "jumping ship". 9-10 years ago when AMD was a competitor in the laptop market you could choose between intel and AMD when buying a Lenovo, HP, Dell, etc. In fact, you can find Lenovo laptops with AMD CPUs: http://www3.lenovo.com/us/en/laptops/ideapad/ideapad-100-series/Lenovo-ideapad-110-15ACL/p/88IP1000710

http://www3.lenovo.com/us/en/laptops/thinkpad/x-series/x131e-amd/

If/when Raven Ridge laptops are shown to outperform intel laptops in every metric, those laptop manufacturers that don't provide the option will see their sales drop as people will be choosing by price/performance. There is no brand loyalty among corporations.

All the major manufacturers have announced Ryzen desktops: http://www.techtimes.com/articles/208772/20170531/computex-2017-amd-ryzen-desktop-pc-from-acer-asus-dell-hp-and-lenovo-unwrapped.htm

HELLU
do you guys think that there might be a serial/uart port on the motherboard of a x220? Or any possibility to read out data?
Was thinking about planting a tiny oled display into my case with an attiny85 or something and display some random information like temperatures or load or whatever comes to my mind

You need to be wary of those.

What does the drive-less nature suggest, other than that someone's nabbed the drive?
>>
>>61106633
Faulty mobo / bad SATA connections.
Or paranoid seller.
>>
>>61106633
nothing, don't know what that guy is talking about desu

maybe it suggests it used to be a company laptop and it might have computrace/anti-theft enabled on it or it might be in bad condition?
>>
>>61106607
yes
>>
>>61106656
I've never had any problems buying driveless machines
Most of the time they keep and destroy the hard drive because they're afraid of you recovering whatever data is on there.
>>
>>61106633
>>61106656
There is no guarentee that I will get it for that price because there is a competition with another buyer. I do have X220 already, but parts on T420 seem to be easier to get so that's why I'm considering to get T420. I thought it was good deal because you can often see these laptops go for 200€ or more.
I have no hurry to get T420 yet, until I have upgraded my T60 and T61 to their max, let alone X220.
>>

I can also get my hands on a sweet sweet T530
i7-3520M
RAM 4 Go
320go HDD
1080p
Nvidia NVS 5400M

For the price of 180€

Like the T430 mentioned earlier I have to check it in person but both look in ok condition.
Damn it.

Just so you know, I'm going back to college and this will be my main computer. Nothing computer science related tho.

is there a list of FRU numbers of T430 motherboards and their differences? I need to find a motherboard without the nvidia dgpu.

hey /tpg/
decided to ascend to thinkpad.

I need a small, fast thinkpad.

OP here. Amazon a good place to get it?
>>
>>61107455
the keyboard replacement requires you to replace the palmrest as well, since the old keyboard has different nubs on the front. you will then flash a custom ec firmware and you have the better keyboard.

i am about to buy an ssd and i think i might settle at samsung evo.

buy it preferable from somewhere where you can check the laptop for yourself to see if it works and has any physical damage or locked bios.
>>
>>61107495
That seems a little expensive, look for bulk sellers on ebay
>>
>>61107455
don't bother replacing the keyboard/palm rest it's a meme

I don't know about the prices where you live, but I bought my T420 with an i5 and 4GB RAM for ~120€. So I would say yes.
An SSD will good, the ram would be enough I would guess.
>>
>>61107645
i'd go for it.
I paid $200 for a t430, same i7, 4gb ram and 320gb a few months ago. you should look and see if you can easily install libreboot, if that's important to you.
anyone else agree?

>>61106811

it is more sturdy and has less flex than the *20 and *10 series, also easier to clean
>>
>>61107743

>>
>>61107823
i replaced my t430 keyboard with the classic and there is no difference in flexing (so it does not flex at all). the flex is caused by the body, not the keyboard.
>>
>>61107645
Looks good. It already has 8gb ram so I'd leave that be. An SSD is always a great upgrade though so yeah. If you want a 10x better keyboard look for an x220 keyboard to swap with the x230 shit keyboard

Update! I will not be getting that one, apparently there is lots of cosmetic damage. I will be getting this and a 500 gb SSD. Which SSD type should I get? How do I know if this is bios locked too or if I can install Linux on it. And why is the x220 keyboard so much better?
>>
>>61084572
It can do any of those things but probably not as well as you'd expect it to
>>

the layout is stupid and the keys are island-style with less key travel. see some pictures.

Whats the best way to increase the x220's battery life?

>The "19+" is so fuking expensive.
>And the 9 cell batteries only gives me like 3,X hours (real, not what the "battery life icon" tells you) of reading pdfs :/

19 + 9cell configuration is like: fuck up, better i go buy another laptop.
>>
>>61108671
well there's the obvious stuff, get an ssd, turn down screen brightness, turn off wifi

could just get a second 9-cell battery
>>
>>61108671
A powerbank that can output 20v (i.e charge laptops).
You can use this same powerbank to charger your phone or your future laptop.

This is my solution because I also own X220

Finally did the touchpad upgrade on my T440s after 3 years of owning it. Everything works except the touchpad isn't seated correctly and the buttons scrape against the case. I think I might have warped the case while trying to pry off the stupid back cover. REEEEEEEEEE
>>
>>61108807
I'm not sure about T440s specifically but usually the palm rest has a few plastic bits that snap into place, if you don't get them snapped in properly then it will appear warped and might fuck with the touchpad

I've encountered this issue on X230, X220, T420 but yeah now I know to make sure the palm rest is fully snapped in
>>
>>61108844
The palm rest is non removable after xx30 anon. What you said has nothing to do with xx40
>>
Do I need to remove the palmrest to install the mSATA SSD? T530, btw.
>>
>>61109214
no, just keyboard
>>
>>61108844
Thanks, it does feel like the palm rest is a little loose. I guess it's also possible that I just didn't get the touchpad seated correctly while screwing it in.

A friend recently got an X60 mobo off of eBay but it has a bios lock.any way to get around this? The cmos battery was pulled and it won't let a drive even boot without the password.

Pretty sure you'd have to remove the chip that has the password lock saved and replace. No idea what the chip is, but it was a bad purchase because of that.

>>61108075
A t400? for under 70$ sure, youre entering the territory of "old shit near useless now" like a T60/61 or a T4x series.
Theyre plenty for shitposting and other general computer fuckery, but dont expect much. Especially not youtube or other streaming anymore, the Core2Duo's arent that great with modern streaming services because theyre bloated pieces of shit

It should come with Wifi, dont bother getting a dock for something this old unless its just for the sake of having a dock, im not 100% sure on the beagle, ive never flashed a new bios on a modern T series
As far as other accessories go, get spare shit for things that may or may not break, spare stick of ram in any size for testing, spare wlan module, a handful of spare keys and a trackpoint or two in a baggie
