When I can't be arsed to turn the lights on, yeah. But I'll get solid colour keycaps soon with any luck.
>>
>>61070726
Gaterons are fine on a $60 keyboard, but the Varmilos sell for around $160 and up and blatantly advertise Cherry switches. I'd be pissed too if I took off a keycap and found Gaterons.

But aren't Gaterons and especially Brown for what I'm talking about here better then cherries?
>>
>>61070769
Well yeah, but I am saying that there are rabid "cherry mx only" fans out there. Gaterons finally have dethroned cherry mxs so it will be awhile till everyone catches on.
>>
>>61070777
everything besides blues are better for gaterons. Although I did hear that Gateron might actually prelube their shit so that is why they are smooth.
>>
>>61070781
Regardless of how you feel about gateron smoothness, they're still only a fraction of the price of original cherries and a $160 keyboard shouldn't cost this much if it's going to include gaterons.

Bought my first mechanical keyboard today (without making a lot of research honestly...), a Steelseries 6g v2, and im really disappointed because it just doesnt feel like an upgrade from my Microsoft Sidewinder x4 which I had for past 3 years and its still in perfect condition.

>>
>>61073609
Can't you order blanks with their custom board service, or is that dyesub only
>>
>>61073650
You can order blanks but they don't offer black ones. I went with the milky whites for options. Both will get good use when I get my 60% further on.
>>
Are oetmu switches decent?
>>
>>61073765
They're the best in their price category - which is objectively lower than cherry or gateron.

They're probably better than like kailh and shit like that. You'll usually find them in $20-$30 chinkboards. If you're paying $50 or more you can easily get gaterons instead (heck, the james donkey is like $40 last I checked). But if you want a budget mech, and you're not overpaying, then they're pretty alright.

Tl;dr great budget switches, you get what you pay for though
>>
You guys use O-Rings?

Worth it? I mean they are cheap, already ordered but wondered if they are used or not so much.
I think they will make my browns feel even better.

So yeah, I don't want a PCB and I don't need leds.

Also, good source for cheap plates and cases ?
>>
The GH60 plates and case are the cheapest so just go with those. If you really want ISO then that will limit your choices for keycaps
>>
>>61074475

I'm aware that ISO keycaps are harder to find but I'm thinking of painting them on the front side.

>>
>>61074688
Kailh box switches are as water resistant as your average modern smartphone iirc
>>
>>61074770
Then get a capacitive switch instead of a mechanical one since most of those are waterproof. The feel doesn't change that much as the rubber membrane slightly increases the resistance

The tada is an absolutely fantastic board, with great build quality, no particular defects or gotchas, exceptional keycaps, full programmability, and a very affordable price tag. One thing it is not, however, is a board with a large form factor - it's 65% and nothing can change that.

I've seen people complaining about tada recommendations being spammed, and I think the reason that would come up is because of retards like you posting it when it's not at all relevant.

Any suggestions for readily available keycap sets that would look good on this keyboard, the drevo gramr? Anything I can buy easily with out having to wait months or join a group buy.

It seems like a $40 Noppoo Choc mini minus the POM(which I love) so you can't go wrong there.

That has a more standard space bar than my noppoo(which has a few sets available) and the only oddities I'm seeing are the 1u right alt, fn, ctrl, and tiny shift. I don't think I'll have any issue finding key caps for it?
I'm actually leaning towards the Ak33 now though because they have RGB versions for only $15 more than the gramr and the stock keycaps have nice, normal, legends that are shine through. If you like RGB at all I don't think anything is going to compete for $55.

Model F AT, the best modern layout model F keyboard and the nicest tactile beast short of an old beamspring. It's worth about $200-$300.

I'd just get a cheap adaptor and use it though. It's AT so you can use it on modern computers without a lot of crazy converters or controllers.

you'll never find drevo gramr compatible keycaps with legends. and given how fucking nonstandard that layout is, you'd definitely want legends.

by the time you buy all the extra keycaps for that thing, you'll move on to something else.

I'd just skip it and buy something that you can actually easily modify.

drevo gramr's not a bad looking board but that font is atrocious. I couldn't look at it for more than few hours. those chinks completely destroyed the keyboard with a shit font.

Being a 75% fag is torture. The noppoo choc mini is awesome and all but they're out of production, rgb models are rare now, key chatter problems.
It uses a 5.5 space bar but it comes with black or white then you can easily buy a few other color 5.5u spacebars and it really opens up keyset possibilities. Expecially because the plum84 IS the noppoo choc mini just with shitty fake topre. Same exact tooling and the chinks think the board is pretty popular and so are including 5.5u space bars more often in their keysets.
I'm not sure what to get. Just want a 75% with standard key layout but outside of building my own and group buys thats hard to find. Thinking maybe I'll just give up and get a normal TKL.

They'll either enumerate as multiple keyboards/composite device, or as a non-keyboard device that just so happens to send keyboard scancodes. The latter is actually worse in a high-security environment because IT may have alarms set up to detect unauthorized devices. A USB keyboard device can't do anything but be a keyboard, but a "non-keyboard" could be anything in addition to sending scancodes.

Tactility on the Matias switches is stronger and crisper, and the actual key travel is much smoother. They're basically modern simplified ALPS switches with down- and up-stroke noise dampeners.

Tactility on MX switches is just weaksauce in general, though. Since the tactile component is the switch slider itself, they can't risk anything more than weak tactility for fear of fucking up the force curve or having the switch bind up.

Cherry Browns are great! It is a light switch that still has some tactile feedback when you press it. Just know that you won't hear a click or have strong rebound and resistance.

Browns aren't special as being the clicky one, super soft, really hard or whatever so people knock them. Browns are a great switch to just get on with an type. Imho, all the other switches can sometimes be too much to an extreme but Browns are always fine.

Gaterons are almost identical and frankly you'll feel better owning actual Cherry switches than copies.

So I keep seeing Gateron Blues being bashed, but the only tangible argument I've seen against them is their additional 5g of weight. So is there anything else wrong with them? Because if it's just slightly heavier, I don't see why everyone would parrot that they're objectively worse than Cherry blues, given that switch choice is normally quite subjective. Like, if I don't mind heavier switches, but I can't be bothered to try finding or building something with greens (or greens may be a bit too much for me), will I be completely fine with gat blues? Or do they actually feel worse in some other way?

Gaterons blues have a much higher pitch then cherry blues, and o-rings don't help changing it. If you don't care about the sound and the slightly wobblier and inconsistant feel then go ahead and get gat blues
>>
>>61090818
>slightly wobblier and inconsistent feel
See, that's what I was looking for. So they really are objectively inferior purely in terms of typing quality.

I'd assume if you're getting clicky switches you already accept that it's going to have a loud, possibly annoying sound, so a slightly higher pitch would probably not matter to most people (at least me)

>>
>>61091287
https://kbdfans.myshopify.com/products/enjoypbt-keycaps-dye-subbed-keycap-set-117keys

these ones in particular are expensive mostly because they have a very high quality print (dye-sublimated). you can get blank keycaps which have the same quality of the plastic but without the print:

https://kbdfans.myshopify.com/collections/keycaps/products/enjoypbt-blank-keycaps-117keys

and the reason the blank ones are still a bit pricey is because they are made of thick pbt plastic and they are nicely textured

>>
>>61091287
Its the molds and tooling. Proper dye-sub uses a vacuum chamber and expensive ink, and doubleshots are even more expensive since you need a seperate mold for each keycap

Me again. Think of Cherry Browns as the quintessential keyboard switch from which every other switch branches off from. Either you add resistance, decrease resistance or add clicking noise. Basically the only reason people hate on Browns is their associations with the colour Brown.

Cherry Blues are scientifically determined by Germans to be the perfect keyboard switch and the Brown version is for more reserved and quieter people, like Canadians and Hackers.

Threw my black keycaps on my Magicforce that used to have the white POMs from my noppoo because the POM just feels way nicer than that PBT.
Friendly reminder to always buy the black memeforce because the silver looks like trash regardless of keycaps.

I thought all ABS shined after a while; does doubleshot ABS shine far slower to justify the price that places like pmk charge?

I like a keyset they have but having no experience with doubleshot abs(only with abs and pbt) I'm a bit worried about pulling the trigger on them because I worry they'll shine in less than a year or two.

What are you talking about? Clicky switches wobble do to the two peice mechanism. Whites are the first clicky switches made back in 87 and are inconsistant due to being a first attempt. Blues and greens are better, but gateron clicky switch problems are well documented over reddit. I go by the facts and evidence. I know that gateron has improved their molds since their newer switches wobble a lot less then before. I wouldn't be surprised if they surpass cherry switches. Now for cherry I heard a couple rumors that cherry changed their toolings to compete with gateron, but there haven't been any official reports yet. If its true then its nice that smooth switches are coming to the market

So, Topres are literally a rubber dome. Question: what makes them special?

Not in terms of the price, because you can take literally anything and make it cost two orders of magnitude more by going full meme on the production, materials, etc. But rather in terms of typing. Does it actually feel better than your average rubber dome? How?
>>
>>61094604
They are just rubber domes with a more pronounced bump and sound to them. I don't like them, they feel kinda.... mushy? When you press down and traditional cherry switches you can actually feel when the actuation force bottomed out. You can't feel those on topres.

They are just overpriced and few people own them. I guess it is just buyer's remorse or some shit. I do have a cheaper realforce, but I kinda regret buying it.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lbb3CihZw5k
Here is a good review for it.
>>
>>61094604
They work through capacitive sensing of a spring instead of contacts, so you don't have to bottom out too register the keypress. The spring contributes nothing to the feel though; it's too light and it's only there to trip the sensor. The domes collapse more smoothly than cheap ones. You sort of feel them give initially but then they retain a little resistance the rest of the way down so you don't just slam the key down instantly.

I don't like them personally. They're still rubber domes and feel like it.

Last thing I used that wasn't a laptop keyboard was a some shitty generic cheap keyboard with high keys and membrane, I don't really know much about keyboards.

Once upon a time, I was a little kid, and I liked computers. When I pressed a key on the keyboard, I could feel it go down with a clack and it was really cool, and I enjoyed it a lot. One day, though, keyboards stopped being like that for no reason, and I was pretty sad, but I just thought "well, that's the way things are now, I guess" and dealt with it, and then I found out these keyboards were still a thing, and now I want one.

The end.

So, can you give me some suggestions /g/enpai?

IBM model M SSK would be what you're looking for, but good luck finding one. Something like MX greens would be the next closest, but its not as tactile as a model M. The cooler master rapid fire or quick fire has greens and costs 70 bucks here in the us. Maybe its around that price in portugal

I mean you do you man. But don't try and mislead people. It comes of as histerish "Old stuff is better *sniff*" I know PBT vs ABS comes down to texture and durability. And Gaterons are just Chinese rip offs, no need to justify your purchase it all comes down to preference. no right or wrong just do you.

I just can't fathom why people would like ABS, even from a nostalgic perspective. That shine feels so cheap.

>Maxkey is making SA Carbon
AHAHAHAHAH
Thank god SP sold their SA molds to someone with no moral compus. Cry about it all you want, but anything to make those stupid Jews to shiver is good in my book. Not only will the quality be the same, but it will be cheaper and ship faster. I get that copying a popular design is a scummy thing to do, but I don't give a shit.
>>
>>61096986
I love reading all the pissy people on Reddit upset that the Chinese are """STEALING""" color schemes.

There's also some good stuff with the people who think the novelty/icon keys are something special when they're all clip-art icons you could get on any site with CC/open source artwork.
>>
>>61097025
My favorite part is that when they first popped up people began making up excuses that these were inferior to SP keycaps. Then it came out they were using SP's old tooling and those complaints stoped. Now people say that SP SA keycaps are better since the molds are new and aren't as worn out as Maxkey SA.

Sure Dude, a chinese knock-off is better than the German engineering company that invented the product. Those clear plastic cases will definitely last decades without fading or cracking. You'll be proud supporting a company that contributes nothing.

With Cherry switches you know what you're getting and they are proven over time. Go ahead and save a little money but it is far wiser spending that little bit more to protect your own investment and support a reputable company.

I guarantee Gateron will vary in quality over time and you'll deserve what you're stuck with in terms of poor product quality and reputation.

Why did you even want a mechanical keyboard to begin with? "Hey, I've got a keyboard made with junk shit parts from thieves that manufacture in toxic sweatshops in the asshole of the world. It is my hobby."

Why would you buy discount junk? Aren't you embarrassed knowing you bought garbage and it will sit there on your desk letting you and everyone else know how lame you are. It's like you're wearing Keds brand running shoes! Keds!
