Hi
>>
Are the keyboards made by Cherry themselves good? I need a replacement for my Rosewill keyboard and don't want anything flashy
>>
>>61040682
Nice keeb bro, but don't you think it has too many keys?
>>
Went ahead and put the caps on my custom split board (minus the spacebars for which I'll need to bend a 3u costar stabilizer wire first), even though I haven't done any of the wiring yet. I just wanted to see what it looks like, and the answer was "pretty damn good" IMO
>>
>>61040883
looking sweet, I'm expecting a lot of pictures once you're done.

How are you connecting the two halves?
>>
>>61040597
I just bought a keyboard from China, it seems pretty cool, quite enjoying using it. The keyboard layout is American and I'm English, I can certainly live with it like this but I'd prefer a UK layout if it's not too expensive. Where do I purchase some different keycaps from? How do I know if what I'm getting is good? Also does anybody use wrist rests with their keyboard? The base is quite large so I think it might be necessary to stop me from developing RSI.
>>
>>61040978
protip, stick with us layout, much easier to get keyboards and keycaps.

t. britbong
>>
>>61041036
OK, I might well end up doing that. I feel like I might replace the keycaps on this keyboard anyway, don't like the look of them, I don't know how you describe this look but it's futuristic, techy I guess, and I'd rather have a minimalist or traditional kind of look.
>>
>>61041068

I'm not buying another keyboard, I just bought this chink one and it feels nice to me. Never tried a mech keyboard and I'm really enjoying it, I'm sure there are better ones out there but I don't want to spoil myself yet. I'll use this for a while then I may upgrade in future.
>>
>>61041143
indeed, but not easy to get keycaps for 'em, and when you can, it often costs more to get the ISO kit.
>>
>>61040977
Thanks, yeah, I've been taking plenty of pictures which I'll probably just dump in a month or so when I get a chance to work on it some more.

I was originally planning to connect the halves with a 9-pin serial cable, but there wasn't enough vertical clearance for the connector, so I went back to a TRRS connector like ergodox usually uses. Fortunately, the TRRS cable options are more varied, lower-profile, and better looking than serial cables, but the serial cable would have been easier to solder and offered more pins.

I was only half joking. What other option do you have? Do you care about the casing? You could probably find a way to break the casing and remove that without damaging the keyboard itself.
>>
how are Max-keyboards keycaps? seems too cheap to be true

Whelp I bought it so I will see how it goes. Apparently it is bezel, but uses costar stabilizers so it is not much of a big deal for me.
The newer models (according to geekhack) don't use the realkey tech so it fixed the problem.

Wish me luck anon.

KBParadise V80 or Filco Majestouch-2?
These are my options. I'm going to switch the keycaps almost asap.
>>
>>61045330
V80
>>
>>61044364
Yeah. It uses a standard layout so replacements aren't hard to find. The one nice thing about it is that since its so basic repairing it is extremely easy. You can even open the switches without having to desolder the keyboard
>>
>>61045330
Filco is a classic that everyone swears their life on, and for whatever reason, I only see complaints about KBParadise keyboards (probably because of the bottom-mounted LEDs interfering with switches).

It honestly comes down to whether you want LEDs or not.

Basically only benefit is that they cable is detachable and doesn't have a big branding name on the front. I think I like the Filco case more overall tho.
>>61045421
I don't want LEDs.
It comes down to the case design and the shade of black because the V80 I can get is the Vintage and I don't think that's all the way black.

>>61045330
Oops, I lied, the V60 has bottom-mounted LEDs, the V80 is fine.

If you want a removable cable for whatever reason, I understand, but the Filco has so much third-party support, you can get whatever case and cable you want for it. I think there are even bluetooth mods you can get for it too.

And don't waste money on shit keycaps, you'll be like the rest of us here wishing they didn't spend $40 on shit caps, and instead went right straight to something like EnjoyPBT for $100.
>>
>>61045894
Okay I'll go with the Filco Ninja then.
Thanks for the heads up on the EnjoyPBTs, already eying some blanks but they are 50$ for 109 on aliexpress, are they fake?
>>
>>61046007
no, blanks should be cheaper. You're paying for the printing on the higher priced ones.
>>
>>61045894
I got my fake caps on Ali and they feel and look fine, why are they considered so poor?
>>
How do people set up their numpad layer on a 60%?
>>
>>61046622
the coating on them ends up fading off and makes them look like shit. The other problem would also be things like misaligned legends and small inconsistencies in the printing
>>
>>61046662

i'm actually surprised how many enthusiasts seem to just brush off chattering in other boards (kbp v60 and 80 boards stand out). it absolutely fucks up touch typing and is pretty shitty when you're paying at least 5x more than your typical cheap rubber dome.

any suggestions on how to learn this properly and easily?

anyway, returning this is not a good option since I bought it from China. the seller made a mistake. I'm basically $60 in the hole if I don't use this set.

Maybe this:

Also, get used to not looking at your keyboard at all and just watch your screen. Even if you mess up, don't look down, just press backspace and try again. It'll get easier the more you do it.
I promise you'll get used to it if you put in the time and don't cheat (look down).

It's just an overpriced TKL with crap keycaps. The aluminum case and USB type-C connectors are kinda neat, but there are far better options out there. I guess it's not a bad keyboard though.

I got the aluminum 108 on their first massdrop run. It feels real nice with o-rings, but I thought it came defective. Turns out, they didn't properly isolate the board from the very much conductive case, which shorted the board and caused light issues. Fixed it by opening it up and sticking a few sheets of paper between PCB and case, and now it works flawlessly.

Caps are great; no issues there. I can do without the gimmick features like the timer, but the backlight options are neat and don't require any software to work. Overall I'm happy, though a little extra thought would have saved some hassle on my end.

very legit. Gateron browns are way better then cherry mx. Cherry mx browns are supposed to be tactile, but there is like only a 20% bump (when the switch pushes you back), for gateron browns they are like a 50% push back. There is a reason why cherry mx browns aka "scratcher reds"

>>
>>61062770
matter of preference honestly. Go to an electronics store and try them out.

Blues are loud, but if you like the idea of hearing a typewriter while you type then it is not so bad. They are the most popular and Cherry makes the best version. They have tactile bumps that press against you.

Browns are, in theory, supposed to be blues without the sounds. They are supposed to be for a working environment where the noise is a problem. These keys, like blues, push back against you so you feel pressure against your fingers. Gaterons make the best versions.

Blacks are for heavy hands and they go straight up and down. No tactile bump. Oldest kind of switches. Some people like them and it is usually old timers where they prefer that the keys have to pushed in all the way to register a press. Gaterons make the best version.

Reds are light and they are mostly for gaymers where a slight keypress will register a keypress. Gaterons make the best version.

Basically
Gaterons > Cherry> everything else> Zorro Besides blues of course. Problem with Gateron blues is that it is 55g instead of the standard 50g and to press down on and the difference is noticeable. At that point it kinda gets heavy handed.
Zorros are terrible

Are Steelseries bad overall or maybe its just me wanting too much?
>>
>>61068152
>Their switches are reliable

Do you not understand what having two redundant contacts in a momentary switch will actually lead to?

They'll go out of sync from wear and chatter the switch long before either of them actually fails mechanically. And you know they don't have adequate anti-chatter delay to deal with this because it would mean multi-frame input lag.

There's a reason this design is only used effectively in latching switches.

I have an imouto and she plays piano. She told me once she'd like a mech keyboard so she can type better and her b-day is coming up so I'd like to buy her one.

I'm willing to spend no more than $300 (US) for a keyboard whose typing MOST CLOSELY resembles playing on a piano. Something that's soft and non-clicky.

I type slowly and have never really gotten faster.
>>
>>61069308
well, now you know why. get rid of these silly habits and you'll improve and become a man.
>>
>>61069333
I don't have 90 useful words to type a minute. I want to type less and say more.
>>
>>61069384
>I want to type less and say more.
that's a pretty banal statement and opposite from wisdom but even if that was your goal, if you typed faster, you'd have more time to think.
typing slow and wasting life away correcting mistakes is stupid. there's just no pros in typing slow... only cons.

I've found one of these https://shop.daskeyboard.com/products/das-keyboard-professional-model-s for $84
Is it worth it?
>>
>>61069423
Learning how to touch type would mean devaluing having a priority/urgency system for decision making. Striving for excellence in all things is admirable perfection but if I'm using my lazy fatass time to learn to type I can't justify not using that time on something more important than learning to type. I've never been bottlenecked by my typing speed.

Where the fuck? I only see them in the $80-100 range.

Das is shit, it used to be one of the best options back in like 2010, but now they just make embarrassing shit.

That case will pick up EVERYTHING and get ridiculously dirty. It's not a bad keyboard though if you can stomach the case and get new caps.

I got my mechanical keyboard in the mail around a month ago and it's still sitting in the box. Why can't I motivate myself to hook it up? I'm currently typing on some weird Logitech keyboard that was all BestBuy had when I needed a keyboard ASAP a couple years ago.
>>
>>61069520
Is it worth it for the price? It has Cherry Blues and it has a volume wheel unlike the one I linked
>>
>>61069662
Sure, if you're gonna switch the caps, also I think the one with the wheel doesn't have the stupid piano-finish case.

>>61060906
my laptop keyboard never really worked properly, so I figured "might as well jump down the rabbit hole" and here I am now with a Varmilo, a Royal Kludge (I liked the name and the price was right, if you grab one then remember to flip the spacebar), and a couple of sets of keycaps

If you want to be stuck with shitty ABS keycaps, that's your problem. Also two separate contacts just brings about a whole new set of problems.

on the modern choc mini/plum84 layout with 1.25u bottom row modifiers it's fucking based you little shit. 6.25-7u is excessive. a keyboard should have at least 1-2 keys besides the spacebar within short (= fast and ergonomic) reach of your thumbs. mechanical keyboard manufacturers are really behind the times on this one. there are some customs like pic related tho

What's wrong with the caps it has?
I give 0 fucks about aesthetics btw. All for functionality

keycaps affect the typing feel (and sound) a lot, and pbt keycaps won't wear out any time soon. you can get pretty damn decent thick pbt keycaps for around $30-40. if you don't want to spend more money, i would recommend going for a cheaper keyboard so you can fit solid keycaps into your budget.

>That wear on caps lock.
Doesn't surprise me since that left shift is so tiny. I thought ISO was supposed to be better.

Keycaps are just as important as your switches. If you're stuck with shitty ABS caps in OEM, you're gonna be missing out on PBT caps in Cherry profile that feel a hundred times better. Most people spend a shit ton of money for something like GMK caps not just because they look good, but because they make it a much better experience.

And when it comes to any gamer1337 keyboard, you're dealing with the worst of the worst when it comes to keycaps.

Are they weighted keys? I use MX Greens, but those are clicky.

Does the slider not wear down where it's in contact with the leaf? How long would it take for a tactile switch to start becoming less pronounced?

Thin, weak, garbage ABS. The spacebar on mine literally snapped in half because they're so low quality.
>>
>>61070215
do greens feel less mushy than blues, in your experience?

because i just bought a switch tester to test them out with the intention of getting a keyboard with greens on it, and the tactile bump/click on a green feels like SHIT compared to the blue on the tester.
>>
Does one need a Bluetooth option? The price goes up by $17.

They're stiffer in my opinion, but I'm not the best judge of these things. I just know that I enjoy a heavy keypress.

That said, I need to reduce the clack and probably should've just settled for the tactile bump.
