A leak is not the same as open source you dumbasses. Open source means its freely licensed, you can't use leaked source code because it's still proprietary.

windows 2k was also leaked

I really hope this is true.

Imagine all the benefits of Win10, but 100% debloated with all the nonsense apps, telemetry, ect removed. Not to mention the backdoors that can be closed and the optimizations.

>couldn't you just compile it
The key word is compile. As far as people are concerned, compiling windows components is a complete fucking shitshow.
It's all in house, so they were never concerned with easy-to-read makefiles and single-line "just fucking compile" scripts.

So now you have one possible outcome.
No respectable programmer is going to touch that fucking thing, he'll spend days gazing and learning but never move a finger - he risks a massive lawsuit from Currysoft known to be angry when in damage control mode.
A russian/chinese/hindu group will take on the task to compile and distribute it. Are they more trustworthy than Memesoft itself?

There's no way someone could have got the files. Even if they rewrote the server limits, it is most likely running on a NAS filled with HDDs. But let's say it's running on NVMEs SSD's and your internet connection is 10Gbps. At a constant download rate of 10Gbps it would take 7 hours and 5 minutes.

But that old server isn't running on NVMe based NAS, and no one who has access to the FTP has 10Gbps internet. And even if they had, they would have to hack the NAS into allowing more than 50GB/s worth of downloads a day.

They keep the site open, because it's centralized and easy to track, meaning they can clean up the really big leaks if they need to.

Releasing a torrent to a centralized but anonymous and hard to censor place seems fine to me since the torrent manifest can be redistributed and the contents should be distributed after the initial wave. Honestly anything is a step up compared to a centralized ftp with accounts.

Freenet might be a better choice ultimately since distribution is forced an anonymity is a priority but I feel like it doesn't have as strong of a userbase as i2p. Again though, anything would be better, if not multiple methods.

When you upload a torrent, you first have to seed it, and there are crawlers keeping track of who seeded what on most trackers.

Perhaps the leaker though he wouldn't leave a track by uploading on the anonymous BA account, and that it wouldn't attract too much outside attention, but that's actually pretty stupid.

It's much more likely that someone would have site logs than someone logging BT DHT no? You don't have to use trackers and you don't even have to seed from your machine, even if you do you can tunnel out.
More importantly you don't even have to use bittorrent, there's other established systems for releasing data anonymously that have been vetted.
>>

I2P/gnunet/freenet don't exit to the clearnet, so you can't just use them as a VPN.
And seeding only inside the darknet would ensure exactly 0 people saw it.

If you're very motivated you could seed from inside a Whonix, but I'm not even 100% sure that works.

It does in the sense that your BT peers are reachable through the clearnet, and you are reachable through the clearnet in the normal situation.

Inside I2P or Freenet you couldn't seed to people outside of it.
>>
>>61050442
I know that I've gotten a lot of WZor releases via bittorrent, no idea if they were first hand or not but I guess that's the point, you shouldn't know where it came from.

>>61050462
>And seeding only inside the darknet would ensure exactly 0 people saw it.
Not true, all it takes is one person to act as a gateway to the clearnet and you're set. The idea is to protect the identity of the leaker, not so much the redistributors, although they can have their own methods of protecting themselves while still distributing to clearnet peers.

>>61050560
You wouldn't believe how much space multiple Windows 10 builds could take up, especially when trying to archive them in every language possible. It was only a couple of years ago when I could store the entire BA FTP on my own NAS, but after the insider program began, everything became fatter than Snorlax. I could easily believe that the 32TB is mostly public Insider Builds in every conceivable language and architecture possible.

There's a pretty simple heuristic, open your bittorrent client and look at the Peers list: you will see their IP addresses, indicating that you're communicating with peers on the clearnet.
The fact that there's a DHT and a P2P protocol doesn't change that.

Tox uses a DHT and is decentralized as well, but the situtation is a bit more blurry.
The Tox DHT works over the clearnet, but they also have a custom "onion routing" protocol, although it's still far from being an isolated network.

Linux is only as big and popular as it is because it isn't massively legally encumbered and its GPL nature has allowed it to effectively resist lawsuits since every company that's distributed it and contributed to it has an interest in its continued freedom.

If the Windows source code leaked online, it wouldn't even really matter. No one would be able to legally distribute it, and nobody in the Free Software community would be able to look at it or they'd pollute any projects they were contributing to.
Maybe you'd be able to use it to do clean-room reimplementations if you were careful but people are already doing that without the source anyway and often getting better compatibility than Microsoft's own similar efforts.

Go away. Let this thread die in peace.

Yeah. I think by this time tomorrow, MS would make a statement basically saying "Everybody calm the fuck down. No source code has been leaked outside of the ARM kit, and the builds are old Insider builds from forever ago." And by this time next week, everybody would've forgotten about this and the publications would have their posts updated.

We're sliding anyways, who cares what he does.

Yeah, the origin of the "news" already updated their article, and the other news sites who quoted are likely to follow.

That's the problem.

I know that Neowin has updated it with BA's statement.

Plus, if I recall correctly, BA did once have the leaked W2K source from 2004, but removed it by request from Microsoft. So, MS does know of BA's existance, but outside of the source code, they don't give a fuck.

So, if MS does do something to BA about it, it will most likely be just some communication with mrpijay (the FTP admin) to make sure that everything is in the up and up.

Is someone going to ED this? Make for an interesting fake news satire.

My feels go to them anyways, they're being sued.

These ones?

There better be pre-emptive backup initiatives for the entire BA archive before it gets shut down.
>>

And let's not forget:

https://www.betaarchive.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=61&t=33250

which their staff wholeheartedly supported and praised.
>>
>>61051584
Yeah. BA once had both the NT4 or W2K sources. But, they've removed them. I've checked the FTP logs and yeah, mrpijay removed them since MS is still taking them down on other websites, so I'm not so sure if BA was one of those sites targeted or if removing them was a precautionary move.
>>61051579
Source?
>>
>>61051628
I've actually looked through that thread during the time when the NT4 source was taken down and it seems that no one cared about the fact that the project uses the leaked NT4 source. I think since it was supposed to turn into it's own thing that they left it alone.

But, that's just my speculation.

Oh I thought that you meant BA for a second. Lol sorry.
About the whole OpenNT thing, yeah. I think they done some actually pretty cool things with it, but as far as I know, the project is pretty much dead. There are still some people working on it, but all the links I see leads to nowhere.
>>
>>61051818
But the fact still remains: those users knowingly took leaked confidential code, modified it, distributed it, and the staff still supported it, even though it was "against the rues."

At this point, I'm not even sure anyone cared then, and it looks like for a brief 4 hours people actually did. And now, we're back to not shits given. Oh well.

Anyone got some more feet pics?
Now that I was reminded of nattie, I want to see hers plz.

Yeah, good point. Plus, I knew that some users were a bit fearful of the legal repercussions if the project got under MS's radar (one user said after the project was initially closed that "it never really had a future. If the project got large enough you'd just get a nice letter from MS to tell you to stop work immediately. You could never release or grow it. The 2k kernel port would be cool but I don't see that happening anytime soon"). In fact, one of the mods back in December stepped in to say that they cannot "directly" share OpenNT on BA.

So, OpenNT is basically a grey area on BA.
