If you want help:
>State the budget for your build (and country if not the USA).
>List games/software you use often, as well as your monitor resolution + refresh rate.
>Clarify your goal for build improvements: lower price or improved specs?

CPUs:
>G4560 - Budget builds (<$500)
>R5 1400 - if you can't afford better or specifically need 8 threads but not a very powerful CPU
>R5 1500x - All you really need for 60fps with power to spare; Don’t get an i5.
>R5 1600 - Best value for higher fps gaming / mixed usage; Get a 1600x if you don't OC
>R7/Xeon/Threadripper - Compute/Multitask/mixed use; Not required for just gaming.

GPUs:
>Integrated CPU Graphics - Desktop stuff and very light games
>RX 560 and GTX 1050Ti - Lower end budget cards, drop settings on newer games
>RX570 - 1080p@60hz at high, running most maxed older games at 144+hz.
>RX580 and GTX1060 6GB - 1080p@60hz maxed, 1440p@60hz at lower settings; Go for the RX580 if you can.
>GTX 1070 - 1080p@144hz /1440p@60hz at high
>GTX 1080 - 1080p@144hz / 1440p@60hz maxed, 4k@60hz in a few games; Probably the highest end card you need for 1080p/1440p.
>GTX 1080 Ti - 1440p@144 hz and 4k@60hz maxed/high in many games; You're kind of going overboard with this one.
>AMD GPUs are suffering a lack of stock and Nvidia a rise in price thanks to e-currency miners

General:
>ALWAYS LOOK AT PRODUCT REVIEWS!
>Always consider an SSD. Try buying a large SSD for what you'd pay for your SSD+HDD combined, and add a HDD later
>NVMe SSDs aren't for a faster OS boot, they're for productivity/scratch disk/VMs. NVMe and M.2 are not the same thing, M.2 is a form factor.
>The Ryzen lineup comes with exceptionally good stock coolers. (with the exception of the 1600X) consider using them over any sub 35USD cooler.

How difficult is overclocking, really? Thinking about going for a 1600/580 build once 580s are available at a decent price again. In the meantime I'm going to try overclocking my 970. Is there any tips you can give me for CPU/GPU overclocking that may seem obvious to you but a total retard may miss? Software-wise I'm fine but I know absolutely nothing about hardware.

3-5 years depending on the usage, what temperatures they face on the daily, and how often you turn on your computer.
Faulty drives usually die within a month of regular use, so it's best to load the drive with writes and reads before doing a complete format. If it's faulty, the drive usually dies during this test.
If you're using the drive for archiving purposes and rarely write anything onto the disk, then the drive should last a lot longer than a drive used for 24/7 torrent downloading or being part of an iSCSI array for running virtual desktops off of.
If the drive is in a vibration heavy environment (heavy enough to make even the rubber dampers ineffective), then the drive will continue to suffer from faults that will lead to a premature end.
Keep temperature below the officially-rated temperature limits (usually 60 degrees) and the drive will last longer.
And if your drive has some shitty eco-mode that parks the head constantly if you haven't used the drive in more than 15 seconds, or if you constantly boot your computer, that wears out the actuator and platter motors.

Located in Germany, I´d prefer not to pay premium to get a 1060 for over 310€, so I´ve added a 1050 ti which costs half. Any chance the mining hype will die down in the future so I will regret buying the cheaper card now?

r5 1600x has a higher clockspeed then the r5 1600 and had XFR (meme tech)

the r5 1600x doesnt have a stock cooler, the 1600 does

My department has laptops because we "do onsite work" been here three years, gone onsite twice. Nothing onsite that can't be handled by a shared department laptop, and our current laptops are 4-5 years old and were shit even then.
There are more than enough ports available, in fact our Wi-Fi is almost unusable when there is more than 5-6 people on it.
My department, 4 people, all do a little.

>>
>>61043506
>My department has laptops because we "do onsite work" been here three years, gone onsite twice
That doesn't mean that other employees aren't using their laptops offsite more often than you are. You need to look into their usage and needs before giving blanket orders based on your own needs (and wants)

If there is a particular department that needs mobility, then issue them laptops that can last them for the lifespan of the laptop (usually 3-5 years for business contracts). If no one else needs mobility and/or rarely needs mobility, then you can consider desktops as a replacement, but I'll tell you right now that physical desktops are old news. Virtualization is where it's at, since your employees can use their own devices to connect to a controlled virtualized environment for significantly better desktop management.

Replace all the devices in the office with thin client PCs, two powerful virtual desktop servers, a back-up/iSCSI server, and invest in a fucking better wifi network. If your wifi is choking with just 6 users, then something is clearly not right there.

EPYC is going to make virtualization more secure and cheaper. Buy a corporate license from Citrix, Oracle, or VMWare and move away from physical desktops. You can end up saving money in the long term from not having to support and replace multiple physical systems over the lifespan of the VD server.
>>
I need some help /g/. I'm building a PC for gaming (BF1) and light video editing. GPU prices are fucking insane here in the Philippines so I need recommendations for my planned build (to make it cheaper or better) or even a new, cheaper build that could make games like Battlefield 1 run at 60 fps at 1080@60hz (Ultra if possible). I suck at choosing cases so can you recommend something with good ventilation or good stock fans?

ok guys, ive got absolutly no clue what to build or where to buy parts, the last time i did this was years ago.
the only thing i know is, that my pc is really old:
>mainboard from ~2007, asrock, unable to read the model number
>cpu: i3, 3 ghz dual core, from ~2009
>gpu: Nvidia GeForce Gtx 660 ~2012
>4 gigabyte ram
>500 gb hdd

how much should i expect to invest into a new good pc, which lasts the next 5 years?
>>
>>61043696
about $1000. let's hope that the GPU prices drop soon
>>
>>61043504
Thanks, that's not too much of a problem since it's just my OS on the SSD anyway. It does suck that I'll have to spend an hour customizing everything again afterwards, though.

I am fully admitting I have only built gaming rigs in the past and am unsure of how to build a good office desktop are. Which is why I came here to ask for input.

>>61043623
As mentioned, I am only looking into desktops for my department, who's usage I am very familiar with. We have talked as a department and would all prefer desktops with 1-2 shared department laptops(can keep the ones we currently have) for mobility purposes.
To make the situation more clear, we are a 15 person company, my 4 person department does support, maintenance and similar stuff.
The IT manager is incredibly cheap and would doesn't seem to understand that investing in quality is much better than having to replace shit every two years because she bought cheap shit.
>>
>>61043731
are new gpus expensive too? i thought this was only a used markets thing?
>>
>>61043751

This will do ya. The processor is brand new and people use it to game at 1080p 60fps, its the first pentium to use hyperthreading and its dead cheap, its equal to i3s. You can increase the ram if you want I just got lazy, but the rest will work well.

If you need one computer with a better CPU consider upgrading it with an i5, the upgrade path is pretty good from these CPUs.

Okay, I think an six-core VM server would be enough to support 11 of those users who don't do demanding activities. I've hosted up to 20 single vCPU virtual desktops on a single Xeon E5-2687W and only reached 50% CPU usage. Just add more RAM to match the total vRAM you'll need for all those users (probably no more than 4GB) and enough high IOPs drives to support enough virtual drive mediums.
The other workers who do video editing and what not could share a network of cheaper, less powerful desktops as part of a render farm.

So a single six-core VD server (~$3000) with 11 thin-clients (~$200 each) and 4 cheaper desktops (~$500 each) should be more cost-effective than buying 15 desktops at $500-700 each.

>a good cost effective GPU that you would want to buy.
My personal choice would be the RX 570 then because it's real good value (the best) and still is powerful enough to run the vast majority of 1080p games maxed, though you're gonna have a hard time finding it in stocks
Alternative would be a 1060 3GB but it's not as cheap and has less VRAM. Lower than that and none of the GPU are really good value;
>>
>>61044642

>>
>>61044693
Nah, it'll die down by the end of the year at worst, it will die down sooner but no one really knows when.
Availability should come back pretty soon and a bunch of websites have a limit of 1 / 2 cards per household so that should leave you some times to grab a 570.

>>
Planning a new build, https://pcpartpicker.com/list/tV9Tf8

I'm going for 1080p/60+fps gaming, nothing else really.

I'd like an RX 580, but they're sold out everywhere.
GTX 1060's are about €300/$330 here (nl), should I wait for new 580's or go for the 1060?

Also, I don't really know what to look for in a case, what should I look for?
>>
>>61045221
330 dollars for 1060 is really fucking overpriced as fuck. Jesus christ. Can you put off upgrading for a few months? This really isn't a good climate to buy GPUs.

Also for casing what are you looking for?
Form. Window. Build quality. Cable management. etc.

Fuck no. That's theft. Neither the RX580 nor the 1060 6G are worth more than 300€ maximum and that's for those """"premium"""" cards with extra bling bling and muh 5% factory OC.
If you really have to upgrade now try to find a 1070 or drop down to 1050Ti. The GPU market is currently completely fucked up by those autistic miners. I really hope that crypto trash is going to crash and burn soon.
Hopefully those autistic retards will then flood the market with GPUs, hence make new ones available again and then commit suicide.

Roll a dice. Currently there's a big bubble growing across crypto currencies and hopefully it will burst before September when Vega hits the shelves.
Otherwise we can only pray that Vega will be shit for mining, otherwise if mining continues and Vega is good for it don't expect GPUs being available before Volta in 2018.

1060 6gb, even those are running low though and you'll pay the miners tax.

Considering 1060's cost around €300/$330 here.
>>
>>61045927
>Would it be a good idea to buy all the parts I want but with a 1050ti instead of a 580/1060, and later pick up one of those when they're back in stock?
No. When the bubble bursts and the cards will be available again the market will be flooded with used GPUs. All those factors should devaluate the 1050Ti for the used market.
You'll basically pay like 150€ for 1050Ti + 250€ for 1060/580 without any good resell value, you might as well try to get a 1070 for like 450€, which is expensive, too.
Imho if you really need to build now see if you can live with a 1050(Ti) or RX550/560 and upgrade to Vega or Volta. If you care about value this is probably the best option.
The only downside is that you'll have to deal with a low end GPU until the upgrade but since you want to play at 1080p 60Hz anyways it should be fine.

>>61045965
If this is true then we can basically close this thread until probably mid 2018 because the GPU market will be fucked up even more.

You're from NL, right? Maybe the KFA 1050(Ti) for 109(135)€ is what you want. They ship to NL and maybe you can use their midnight shopping aka free shipping, too if it counts for international.

>>61046326
Do you really want to pay 300€ for this GPU? It's about 50€ more than it's worth.
Imo the mobo is overpriced, it's basically the base ATX B350 mobo from MSI with meme features and LEDs... ASRock Pro4, MSI PC MATE (?), Asus Prime B350 are better options but most B350 are similar anyways.
Case is overrated and overpriced, maybe look for alternatives from Nanoxia, Be Quiet!, Fractal Design and Thermaltake. Deepcool isn't available in Germany, i think..
The PSU is good but a Seasonic Prime or EVGA G3 should cost +/- 5€ and is even better than the G2.

From what i've read the consumer cards will release about 30.07-01.08 for $400-800 depending on version but that's all just speculation and rumor since AMD didn't tell anyone jackshit.

Vega is our only hope. Volta won't release until early/mid 2018 unless Vega will stomp Nvidias current lineup. I suggest you buy a 1050(Ti) or RX550/560 if you see a good sale.
Vega is too much of a lottery to count on it and skip on good sales and because Vega fails or will be bought out by miners again you're stuck until 2018.

I thought of something like this Build https://pcpartpicker.com/guide/DgH9TW/enthusiast-amd-ryzen-gaming-build but without the 1080ti and a B350 as a Motherboard because i dont plan on using two GPUs
Any help is appreciated
>>
>>61048214
That's pretty good, people usually hit the voltage wall much sooner than that like at 3.8GHz
>>
>>61048238
For memory, look at the QVL/Supported memory list on the Mobo manufacturer. Samsung B-Die ram chips are known to OC up to 3200Mhz without issue.

Motherboard wise, any B350 or AX-370 chipset with a good VRM and VRM heatsink will do. It's features like SLI/Crossfire, audio chip, ports, etc. that'll determine what you pick.
>>
>>61048252
The 1600 is the best CPU from AMD for gaming currently. it's worth looking at.

need a build for games such as overcuck/gta/pubg at low settings with 4xAA (dont care about low settings) and autocad and other cad shit at 144hz.

>>61048396
for gta at 144Hz that's not so simple, Overmeme is much simpler.

Just go with the 7700K and a 1070. but that already is overbudget.

maybe a 1060 will cut it if your settings are noticeable low as you comment.

>>
>>61043044
it all depends on your cooling solution and power delivery system, if you have cheapo psu and mobo overclocking can be risky for your hardware, if you have something halfway decent there is no risk as long as you don't touch voltages, for your gpu just increase powertarget and you will be able to keep your boostclock longer, you can increase the clock a bit and see how long it runs stable( use furmark or something else for quick testing.
>>
>>61043186
step down to a 7600, since you wont overclock anything in an ofice environment mybe even 7500, ifd you really need the ht, then go with a 7700 non k, and buy a cheap graphicscard like a 560 or 1050ti
>>
Pretty new to building, about to order so need some last minute assurance. Do i need an optical drive to install windows? theres nothing in the parts section for them https://pcpartpicker.com/list/YbrHFd
>>
>>61043186
still overkill but bettermsuited for your workload, i upped the ssd size, since the 120gb ssd's just suck adn usually have a terrible value, you coudl even down the processor a bit if you want to but i think that is kinda futureproof and not too terrible.

Buy a key from Kinguin and install it with a usb drive. At your budget, you might as well step up to a Ryzen 1600.

Hey /g/

Can I get your thoughts pls?
I haven't built a new computer in 5 years or so and everything is new and scary.

Current plan:
https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/user/ajnslng/saved/7mZNGX

I'm aiming for a budget - mid tier build. I've moved countries (UK) and need a completely new desktop setup (speakers, screen etc.) so I've had to cut a few corners on the parts.

I want something that'll play smooth at 60fps on highish settings.
Happy to skimp on peripherals - don't need cutting edge 1ms response times or surround sound or anything. Not gonna be OCing.

A few concerns I have...
Which mobo should I get? I need wireless as the router is three floors down. Should I get built in or get a card?

Should I get another 8gb of RAM?

Thanks /g/
>>
>>61049724
Honestly, I'd forgo the G4560 in favor of an AMD Ryzen 5 1400 with a good B350 motherboard. Leaves you with actual upgrade room in the future up to 8 cores and 16 threads without changing the motherboard.

This is probably the cheapest you can get: https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/PVNGFd
I left most of the core build but changed the mobo to the cheaper but perfectly fine ASRock, Bazooka is a meme board anyways.
The GPU.. well.. idk about you but i can't get a 1060 6G for a reasonable price but if you can find one for no more than 250 GBP get one.
The 1050Ti is a cheaper alternative that's fine for most 1080p 60Hz gaming, you may need to tune down the settings but at least this card is available.
Case and PSU are cheaper without compromising quality, removed Win7, just pirate it. Buying wangblows on budget is just stupid, that's a large portion of your budget blown on NOTHING.
Also added an AC wifi card but imo if the router is three floors below you i seriously hope you have wifi repeaters somewhere in between because otherwise it's going to be shit either way.
Monitor idk, check if it has some ghosting issues or some other hickup for the low price. Mouse & KB should be fine but headset is poo in loo pajeet tech support tier. Do not buy that trash. Speakers area also awful.
Considering a budget of 1000 GBP you have about 250 GBP left to spend with this build. You can of course upgrade the build to Ryzen but that would probably leave you chink IEM audio options only, which is ok for temporary use.
If you want to invest into audio, for speakers everything with that budget will be shit, i wouldn't buy anything in that price range.
Headphones is a different story, for less than 100 GBP you can get a good entry gaming / general use setup with good headphones and a V-Moda boom mic or other mod mic.
I suggest you take this build as a basis, make up your mind on whether you want to invest that money into a better build or peripherals/audio. For audio is suggest you ask >>>/g/hpg
There is also the option to import chink mechanical keyboards and gaming mice which are suprisingly good if you know what to buy. Do some research on YT reviews and ask >>>/g/csg

Okay guys. I run a contracting company that builds houses. A customer who wants a house built about a year from now wants me to make him a personal home server that will run virtual machines to every room in his house (12).

I'm already aware of what screens i will use alongside peripherals, but what hardware should I be buying and what virtual machine software should I use?
>>
>>61050668
Depends mostly on wat will the Virtual machines be doing.
And how many at a time and such. There are many guides for homeserver online, you're better off reading some of them and coming back to discuss the pure hardware, once you have everything down.
>>
>>61050418
If it's a proprietary PSU, you may have to repin the 20 pin CPU header. Although the connector is the same, the wiring pinout is not.

I'm in a similar boat, looking at grabbing an old Dell Dimension desktop for a retro XP gaming rig. Trying to work out which GPU will work and, if necessary, which PSU to go with. I found one that LOOKS like it'll do (Dell Dimension with a Pentium 4 and 256 mb ram) with a new HDD and a new GPU, but still unsure about that PSU.
>>
>>61050668
>I run a contracting company that builds houses.
>A customer who wants a house built about a year from now wants me to make him a personal home server
Tell him you're building houses and don't run IT, tell him to contract an IT specialist or do it yourself. It's better for all.
If he fucks up his own home server chances are he will blame it on you and you will have to deal with an unsatisfied customer and his IT problems as a contracting company that builds houses, that's not good.
>>
>>61050767
>>61050668
I've done similar jobs and my way for shit like this is always to go for a subcontractor. Makes life so muhc easier and cheaper in the long run. Nothing worse than dealing with guys that are out of their depth and the customer recieves a subpar product. This doesn't exactly sound like an easy setup.
>>
>>61050737
Well that is less of a nightmare than I thought it would be. It will be a $150 difference if I don't have to get a new MoBo and other various components.

Hope that PSU works out for ya! Sounds like you have got a cool project going on.
>>
>>61050767

>it seems that AMD cpu's aren't all that great for emulation, since emulators generally benefit more from single-core processing power.
The Ryzen series are only like 9% worse than a comparable Intel chip at single-thread processing... It should have no trouble considering it has better single thread performance than Intel Sandy Bridge CPUs, which was the last time intel introduced a new architecture.

Is it worth the overhaul or is that still too slow?
>>
I accidentally the link.

Have I done anything majorly retarded?
I considered a R5 1500x for a while, but after some brief look on the internet, it seems that AMD cpu's aren't all that great for emulation, since emulators generally benefit more from single-core processing power.
Getting an unlocked CPU would be a bad deal for me, since the 7600K and aftermarket cooler are way too expensive in my country.
I also plan on playing modern games from time to time, but on medium, 900p and 60hz, so I thought a 1050Ti would serve me well.

Any advice to lower the costs further? To something maybe around 650$ without a huge impact on performance?

>>61051256
Is that so? If so, the cost for a 1500X is pretty attractive, compared to an I5 7600. and changing processor and motherboard alone would make a huge difference in the cost.
I may end up considering it again.

Which is why you should always check the QvL before buying. Intel platorms are more mature hence why even if the model is no on the list, it still works. But you can't say the same for a new socket like AM4.

Yeah. It should really be in the OP. But it is not. This thread is past bump limit but not dead yet so whoever makes the new OP can you please make a note in there about checking Mobo QVL.

What is the best choice at the moment? Buy a 1080ti or wait for Vega?
>>
can a 1080ti really support 4k @60fps on most games?

How long until games are too demanding for a 1080ti on 4k?

is 4k gaming a meme? even if the 4k can be used for other media too?
>>

Yeah, but you might need to start turning down settings to get stable 60fps.

>RAID5 support
RAID5 is trash and will blow up on you when you try to rebuild. Mirrored or nothing.

I want to game in 1080p60fps,but in the near future maybe at the nextlevelp60fps.
At what price can achive this? Let's go with the current games.
Sometimes i play some emulator too.
According to one of my friend, $1500 gaming pc are idiotic overkill. And i would to upgrade constantly to keep it up. I more likely just want a computer which i could use for the next 5-6 year gaming primary, or even longer generally (compared to my current machine which is 6-7 year old)
Tl;dr is it worth getting a new "gamer" PC in an $1500 Price range or should i lower/higher it.

Future gaming PC with no set budget, just trying to get a cheap rig with good performance I don't need anything crazy powerful, I'm okay with lowering settings. I'm gonna pick up a good mid-range GPU in the next couple months.

I just ordered the parts last night and I ended up getting a 1TB Western Digital instead of the SSD.
