how do the the AKG K7xx compares against the K712, is it worth the price difference?
>>

I have a friend who owns both and he prefers the k712. It seems to have much better build quality but I haven't actually heard them.
>>
>>61026931
What would be the difference between my bro's external sound card (Creative Sound Blaster Surround Pro 5.1), and a DAC?

What I'm asking is, is it worth having both, or will only one improve sound? Or does a DAC improve the sound on top of your sound card, which expectedly improves the sound from your laptop/PC/whatever?
>>
>>61027692
K7XX is muddy as fuck compared to the 712. Both have fuckery in the upper mids.

I'm tired of buying the fucking garbage cheap in-ear headphones at Target and having them break within a week. No other brands do this to me, but the only close store is Target and it's all they have anymore.
I'm looking at the infographic from /csg/, but it doesn't state how long they should last with proper care. Would detachable cables just be my best bet?

The NFB-11 is great. I highly recommend it. It's perfect for something like the HD600 and HD650, unless you want tubes, in which case you could always get a tube amp somewhere down the line and use the NFB-11 as your DAC. Very high quality overall for the price, and you certainly get what you pay for. I haven't had any issues with it other than the drivers installation back when I first got it, but that's been completely rectified with the new 2017 model.
>>
>>61028246
>>61028325
If the Fulla 2 is 80% more powerful than E10k into a 32 ohm headphone, will it be 80% more powerful into a 300 ohm headphone as well? I can't seem to find a calculator tool for this.
>>
>>61028623
I made an mistake. E10k voltage swing was lower than I thought.
In any case, power isn't very useful for headphones. Power is not controlled by the amplifier, either voltage or current is. We normally treat everything in terms of voltage.

Fulla 2 is obviously constrained by USB 5V rails.
>Fulla 2 ~3.5 Vrms.
>E10k ~2.6 Vrms
A difference of about 2.4 dB.

>>61028325
>Why don't manufacturers give voltage swing?
We've been trying to switch over to voltage rating with speakers, but saying you have a "1000W" amplifier is a nicer sell even if you could never actually output that with a 6 or 8 ohm nominal speaker.
>>
Is there a decent cheap (~$150) dac/amp that doesn't have faulty drivers or janky connections to worry about?
>>
>>61028838
>If the Fulla 2 is 80% more powerful than E10k into a 32 ohm headphone, will it be 80% more powerful into a 300 ohm headphone as well?

>>
>>61028947
>>61028838
To be clear as to what I'm asking, if a Fulla 2 puts 360 mW into a 32 ohm headphone and 40 mW into a 300 ohm headphone, and the E10k puts 200 mW into a 32 ohm headphone, can one assume that means E10k will put 22.22 mW into a 300 ohm headphone?

>>
>>61028590
Is it not usb audio class 2?
>>
>>61029049
That would only hold if both devices were only constrained by maximum voltage swing. For high impedance devices this is no issue, but when considering lower impedance devices current limiting is an issue.
>>
>>61029457
OK. With the specs that are publicly available for the E10k and Fulla 2, is it possible to calculate the maximum dB output into the HD600 of both amps?
>>

>(176.4kHz, 192kHz, 352kHz,384kHz and DSD are only available in USB audio class 2.0 and 3.0 / High speed mode . USB audio class 1.0 / 1.1 support up to 96K /24bit )
>>
>>61029517
HD600 is sufficiently high impedance that it is not seriously constrained by current. This will generally be the case for load devices with Z greater than 100 ohms.

Fulla 2 voltage can be figured using the 300 ohm load.
E10k lists voltage in terms of Vpp. Divide Vpp by sqrt(8) to get to Vrms.
After that. find a sensitivity chart and calculate based on the reference value.

For example, HD 600 can be defined as having a sensitivity of 83 dB SPL at 1 kHz to a 0.1 Vrms input, then the Fiio's 1kHz output would be
>20*log (2.5/0.1) + 83
>20*1.40 + 83
>105 dB
Of course, the actual output sensitivity of the HD600 is not a constant function of frequency. This is what the "frequency response" measurements are for.

Those don't suffer from impedance mismatch, but sources that aren't specialized headphone amps do provide basically no power when the load has such high impedance (all sources have builtin amps, but they're biased to feed 50Ω at most and even then they cannot provide much current), so you get low volume and distortion when trying to raise volume.

Most if not all motherboards have good DAC chips in them.
Despite this, many do suck. High noise floors and other flaws aren't uncommon.
It's very possible to fuck up a design despite the good DAC chip, and the proof is on motherboards.

The switch to Amanero over the USB-32 on the new NFB-11.28 they started selling just 3 weeks ago is supposed to be more user friendly. If you get one of those, you have nothing to worry about.

http://www.audio-gd.com/Pro/Headphoneamp/NFN1128/NFB1128EN.htm

Even the one with USB-32, which is the one I own, isn't too complicated. If you're on Windows 10, you just follow these steps: https://pastebin.com/MdDZQ2Xk
Simple enough. And like I mentioned earlier in the thread, if you're on Linux or Mac, you don't need to install any drivers for it.

>>61040489
It only costs a bit more, and yes, it is superior to the Schiit stack. Arguably better than even the Jotunheim. It's also nice to have both a DAC and amp in a single device. In my opinion, you'll likely never need anything else (other than more headphones)

They're going for $299 + shipping right now because of the lead time. Another $20 for the TCXO upgrade, but that's optional.

I don't exactly expect you to believe me, but yes, it does. However, I'm sure you could be completely satisfied with either the Schiit stack or an NFB-11. I by all means don't hate the stack, it's just outperformed (it is cheaper, though)

>Besides balanced meme, does the jotunheim actually sound better than the stack?

Balanced is definitely a meme. Completely unnecessary snake oil, as much as """audiophile cables""". Not worth it at all over the price of the Schiit stack, and I doubt there's any benefit worth mentioning to the Jotunheim over the stack.

Everything in one bigger box, some people do like that.
Bigger knob, see above.
Plenty of power, generally unnecessary but might help some corner case on some odd load.
Balanced. Peace of mind for some people. Harmless in any event.

The better DAC helps, and the amp as well. The 4490 Schiit uses is kinda mediocre compared to Audio-GD's implementation of the 9018/9028/9038 Sabre. The Schiit stack/Jotunheim each have a bit of a glare/harshness compared to the NFB-11, but you may not even notice it if you haven't tried much else

It's around the same size as the Jotunheim, and the volume knob feels really nice. Plus it has a 10 year warranty for free repairs.

>Jotunheim optional phono module

I suppose that'd be kinda cool to have. You'd need to buy a DAC to go along with the Jotunheim for other uses, though

>>
>>61042603
Oh. Somehow I thought there was a USB slot on the soundcard. Nevermind that.

Another question instead, is the X-Fi a DAC, is it a DAC + AI, or is it "just a soundcard"?
In other words, is it a good idea to get a real DAC + an AI, or does the X-Fi do both already?

I got the X-Fi from my brother recently so I have no idea what it can do other than that it improves listening to music on my PC. But if I can improve the sound even better/more efficiently, I want to do that now.
>>
>>61042662
Clock upgrade to reduce jitter. I don't really know how significant of a difference it makes, but I got the two TCXOs with my NFB-11, one for the USB and the other for the DAC. You can get a TCXO upgrade for the DAC on the NFB-11.28, and I'd say you may as well go for it. Otherwise you'd always be left wondering how it is. Maybe even become a bit remorseful, heh.

>>61042736
True in some cases, I bet.

>>
>>61042600
>The Schiit stack/Jotunheim each have a bit of a glare/harshness compared to the NFB-11
But maybe that's accurate? And that sable is softening the edges. Just saying. It's not like I've sat down and ABX'd DACs. The 4490 is reputable in any event.
Psychology is treacherous when it comes to audio.

So very jotunheim-like.

Yeah, I'm guessing line-in is always possible, and that sort of person will just buy a separate DAC like the bitfrost or the modi multibit (for extra meme power).

880 is the only 'decent' one of the bunch. 990 has awful treble and your 7XX is mud city. A HD600/650 would be better than any. Hell, a fucking K612 would be better. Bassy open backs in that price range are all pretty shit.

Mine is being shipped soon and I can't wait. Going to bring my Fulla 2 to work and use it at home with the M1060 that should be coming today.
>>
My m50s were sitting in a wet towel overnight because life is unfair.

Should I do anything alongside leaving them to dry? I moved them to a dry place this morning but the pads are still soggy.

If giving context makes you help a newfag like me out more, when it rains water seeps in through a gap between the wall and the ground. I put a towel there, which I put my headphones on, and it rained overnight... won't do that again but I don't live in squalor though...
>>

>Should I do anything alongside leaving them to dry?
Pray the rain fixed the negrobass.
>>
>>61048447
Yeah, alright, I know this. I was actually surprised when I realized apparently they aren't even recommended anymore.

They're actually the M50Xs, which have the removable cable. But no pride here. They're my first cans and I'm not sure I'd buy them again, but they've lasted a few years now.
>>
>>61048484
If those shit the bed, the direct upgrade from there would be Custom Studios if you want a V-Shape.
>>
>>61048540
Cheers. But I was never really aware of soundstage and all that. I just observed here and there that like, the m50s, plus another foldable really portable headphones were recommended by /g/. I went with the m50s since they seemed the safest, and the other cans were only like 40 dollars.
>>
>Budget- $150

>Location- US

>Source- Cellphone primarily as these would be for travel

>Type of headphone- on ear, over ear

>Open or closed- closed

>Comfort level- as comfy as possible

>Sound signature- neutral to warm

I'm looking for something portable for airline travel that is extremely comfortable. Most IMEs bother my ears after a short time. I'm willing to go a bit higher on the budget for something ideal.

>>
>>61050747
The cable they come with is a bit too long/heavy for portable use but the same company sells a better one for $10

It was Oppo PM-3. All this time I hear about how great their build quality is and the first headphone I order from them ends up having the earpad broken. What a fucking joke.

There isn't a product out there that isn't completely immune to defects, or possible mishandling from the post.

Sure, I don't deny that. It still sucks when you hear about how good a company's build quality is and you get one that's broken straight out of the box.

>>61051088
No, I made a mistake and ordered it off Audio Advisor. I guess that's the last time I trust a non-Amazon vendor. Maybe Amazon is bad too but out of the several electronics I bought off Amazon, none of them have been defective out of the box.

Oh well, now I have to waste time with the RMA process and ship this stupid shit back.

I love phillips but they have this real annoying habbit of making god tier headphones and then discontinuing them and replacing them with shite

case in point phillips she3590 was my favourite iem of all time - could walk down to the corner store and get a pair for $10 then they changed the build and they sounded worse then they totally replaced with the she3700 which was listenable

i dont know if its corporate malice or building a production run of diaphrams is a black art

People do more things with headphones than just listen to music. Is Youtube lossless? Is most game audio lossless? Is most anime audio lossless?
FLAC is impractical for portable use as well.

FLAC is impractical for portable use for most people, period. Most people use their phones for on the go music. Most people store lots of pictures and videos on their phone.

They're fucking shit, m8. Deal with it.

So 384GB isn't enough for your "pictures" and "videos" and however much flac? Considering "most people" manage with 64GB or less...nah. You're poor and mad about it.
>>
>>61052193

It's not. It's completely practical given the demographics of 4chan. Most people on 4chan download anime. Most anime downloads do not have FLAC audio.

Noob here with a question.
Recently bought HD 650s and fiio e10k from a buddy of mine, then bought myself magni2/modi2 stack. I'm using my PC as the source.

I noticed that while I used the e10k, windows playback devices recognized it as SPDIF. But now Modi 2 shows up as USB speakers. My understanding is that you want to bypass your mobo's DAC and send a digital signal to the external DAC. Is this happening with modi? I'm able to get audio out of magni 2 when the stack is hooked up, does that mean i have bypassed the mobo's DAC and everything is working as intended?

Old design whose precision depends exclusively on a fuckload of passive analogue components. I haven't read up how they handle modern hinder formats. I only remember seeing 16 bit r2r schematics
