The 7700k does get 5% better framerates (with increased stuttering though) on a few games but you won't ever see those framerates without a super high end card anyway.

If you're just bored and want to build something then you should buy a set of knock-off lego's cheaply from chick express or epray.
If you want to encode videos or compile a lot of software then you could consider building a Ryzen system. If you want to play games and specially those poorly coded so single-core performance matters more than total performance then the i7 7700k is probably the way to go.
As for ... waiting? That's mostly pointless. There will always be that new CPU architecture or GPU or other new thing right around the corner.

I third this. Just switched to a Ryzen 7 1700X and I'm loving it. Haven't even updates my bios and I can't notice any difference in performance. It's on par with my 7700k/1070 combo. And that's just for gaming. Won't be doing anything multicore like editing and rendering until later this summer when I go back to school though.
