Is this the future of the desktop? Discuss.
>>60976465
no of course not
Wrong. This is the future desktop.
>still no 40 inch 4k screen with quad core cortex a72 cpu and 4gb ram inside to boot linux & watch tv at the same time
More like the future of the cable box
>>60976516
Just plug OP's image into a 4k TV and you're done.
>>60976513
this, you might not like it but normals are going to be all over this shit.
>>60976465
Why would I want to put my whole system on a USB key ? What will I gain from it ?
Is it to be able to use it anywhere ? Then how do you securely plug this thing in not-trusted computers, while having a useful working system ?
Is it for easier upgrading ? The disk speed, storage and USB socket will all evolve, making the thing obsolete.
I don't see the point, putting aside niche use cases.
>>60976465
Won't it make my wall brown from the intense heat it generates? Or am I supposed to only use on a TV near brick walls?
>>60976513
not enough thermal capacity, not enough power to be a desktop.
it's just a fucking meme and that's why so many phones failed at that shit.
>>60976585
You can run Windows on a phone processor dummy.
>>60976583
It's for plugging into an hdmi tv + using a bluetooth keyboard, not an existing computer.
>>60976583
>What will I gain from it ?
Space
>Then how do you securely plug this thing in not-trusted computers, while having a useful working system ?
Is it for easier upgrading ?
>Security
>Upgradability
Normies don't care about these. If you're asking these questions, you are the niche user. Normies are the ones who drive the market. Whether you like it or not.
>>60976513
Is that representing windows running on a vm within android, because that isn't going to be particularly good. If it's remoted in to a windows install then what's the point?
>>60976604
You're wrong.

>>60976630
Well, I can see how it could be useful (come at a friend's, plug your "computer", show him things), but it doesn't seem worth the inconvenience. I don't think it will take off.
>>60976513
I want GNU/Linux convergence. Is there a forked ubuntu phone now that it's "dead"?
>>60976585
It doesn't get too hot because it has a tiny fan inside. (Of course, that brings other problems...)
>>60976465
future is here. its pic related. I also think VR will take over the mobile and desktop environment very soon.

if by "very soon" you mean in 10 years then I agree.

Do phones nowadays output 2160p60 without being terribly laggy in just about everything?
Just wondering

I want excellent performance for my home PC to be gayman and for other shit and I also want portability for travel. Until they can be 1 device, I don't see it happening.
>>60976583
>he thinks that's USB
that's HDMI you mongoloid, you don't plug it into another computer, it is a fucking computer.
I was considering buying one of these yesterday.
I run a little Windows home server and was wondering if this would be strong enough to do 1080p video playback from a network drive over a wireless network (assuming wireless speed is not a bottleneck) on my tv.
Any ideas? I'd like to know before I make the purchase.
>>60976465
The issue with these are that the usable ones are fucking expensive. The Atom version would be fine for media and web browsing if it had at least 4GB RAM instead of 2GB. As of now it's a better idea to bring a ps4 slim with you if you travel a lot and stay at hotels. All kind of streaming you ever want plus gaymen. Web brwosing is a bit of a bitch though.
>>60976465
I have a chinese stick PC powering my living room TV because fuck having a proprietary locked down piece of shit like the Roku or Fire Stick. Other than the fan spinning up all the time, I have no complaints.
>>60979907
The quad core Atom version will probably play back your video without issue. At least my old dell tablet with a similar Atom cpu does with all these 10 bit animu releases. Not sure about x265 though. The 2GB RAM kind of sucks but as long you don't intend to multitask there isn't really an issue. Chrome will start cashing tabs after the first 4 and then reload them.

Probably pretty finy for older games like Killing Floor or CS Source.

HOW CAN I GET THIS I HAVE THE PHONE I CAN BUY THE DEX BUT I WANT THE ENVIRONMENT
>>60976513
I would like it if the phone runs on gentoo or alpine.

Are we getting to the point where a laptop is all you need? I tend to use my laptop more often than my desktop since it's so convenient.

I fear the day this happens, computer prices are going to skyrocket.
>>60982396
We already passed that a long time ago. Desktop offers more customizability, power, thermals and all that stuff so yah it's staying
>>60977234
theres a website with ubuntu touch ports but not forks
>>60976579
As long as it actually works without a deep knowledge of kernals and user spaces and the havoc with antivirus and they don't have to constantly get it fixed or replaced and get to keep their data when they do.
>>60976465
Are you high? That's a portable vaporizer and not the future of the desktop.
>>60986363
Idiot, it's a Dictaphone.
>>60976465
honestly I wouldn't mind it being the future.
it would allow me to carry a full computer in my pocket.
only flaw is I would need to be able to predict where monitors are.

>>60980222
this
>>60976465
This is the future for portable shit to hook into any other screen.
It's pretty neat for a media player and browsing, and like other anon said, to play +10 years old games or very low resources ones.
It doesn't have the power to compile shit or whatever, so it won't be the future of desktops, just for smart homes and portable shit.
>>60976604
good enough for normie tasks.
>>60980281
Probably trying to save an image thats bigger than the space on your drive.
>>60976465
Definitely no, it looks fragile as fuck, give me a Mini PC in a box or fuck off.
>>60976633
It's a Windows Phone which when plugged on a dock becomes a fully usable Windows 10, actually.

Now we're going to be on IT calls related to people putting fluids in the thing.

>Why would I want to put my whole system on a USB key ?
> plug this thing in not-trusted computers, while having a useful working system ?
>>60976583
I'm sorry this has to be one of the worst posts I've ever read.
It's an HDMI, not a USB port. It IS the entire useful working system, that plugs into a screen. Think of the HDMI plug like you would a cable to connect your system to the monitor.
Disk speed in something like that would be solid state, faster than a traditional hard drive. By the time the USB socket evolves, the system would have already lived out it's life.
Stupid fucking dumbass what are you even doing on this board?
>>60990652
Disk speed is actually pretty bad on these (having owned one for a while). It's shit-tier eMMC, probably leftover from a shit-tier budget Android phone.
>>60990533
but you can tho
>>60976583
Have been using the USB Live-CD Boot in order to make a old laptop to work (AMILO PRO). I have tried almost every distro to install on it. It either gives me a red and black lines or forced 680x420 on the screen. If I use it's original OS (Windows XP) on it, it becomes a overheating shitfest. Grew quiet fond of KolibriOS and Puppy Linux.
