>How to assemble a PC, select components & more. (somewhat outdated)
https://wiki.installgentoo.com/index.php/Build_a_PC

CPUs:
>G4560 - budget builds (<$500) unless G4600/G4620/i3-7100 is heavily discounted
>R5 1500x - generally all you need for 60fps with power to spare. No i5
>R5 1600 - best value for higher fps gaming & mixed usage; 1600x if you too lazy to OC
>R7/Xeon/Threadripper/ - compute/Multitask/mixed use

Graphics:
>G4560 iGPU is fine for desktop stuff and very light game
>1050Ti for low budget. Drop settings if not Freesync/Gsync on newer games; RX560 if discounted <$90
>RX570 4GB - 1080p@60+hz, running most maxed; older games at 144+hz
>RX580 8GB - 1440p@60+hz, inject SMAA & drop settings
>1060 - Generally outperformed by the RX 580 and GSync costs more; consider if AMD is not an option (ie CUDA/miners buying all RX400/500s)
>1070 - if on sale/can't afford 1080
>1080 - 1080p@100-144+hz maxed; 1440p at lower hz.
>1080Ti - 1440p@90-144+hz; 4k@60hz in SOME games, more at lower settings

General:
>READ PRODUCT REVIEWS to see if that cheap SSD/PSU or whatever is reliable
>Consider larger SSD-only for what you budget SSD+HDD combined. Add HDD later once needed
>NVMe aren't for faster OS boot. They're primarily for productivity/scratch disk/VMs
>Stop confusing any M.2 drive with NVMe. M.2 is a form factor
>mATX board + case is often cheaper
>1 SR DIMM is slower than 2 DIMMs
>>
Can I get some feedback on my build, about to pull the trigger. It is intended for 1080p 60fps gaming on medium-ultra settings depending in the game.
https://pcpartpicker.com/list/pCxWvV
>>
>>60921373
I think you'll be happy with it, but I'd get a modular UPS personally
>>
https://pcpartpicker.com/list/6W92wV
Basically what I'm looking at starting, the Mobo and ram (yes I want 16) are just what I pulled of Logical Increments so I'm open to changes, I only ever lurk when I'm building or buying parts so how is the 7700k with 1080 ti for 4k?
>>
>>60921508
Great. Shills will tell you to get AMD and you should if you are doing other CPU intensive stuff aside from gaming otherwise 7700k and a 1080ti is probably the best you can do for gaming unless you get a 1800 instead.

Don't fall for no source benchmarks. Do your own research as well.
>>
>>60921570
>SHILLS! EVERYONE'S A SHILL!
no. It doesn't work that way. Call me when Intel can produce a good product without price gouging.

>>60921508
The 7700K is only worth it if the only thing you do is game at 1440P at 144 FPS.
For anything else, AMD Ryzen does everything else better, and doesn't perform that much worse in games.
If you only game, it's prefectly fine.
If not, Switch to Ryzen.

My only complaint about the build beyond that is the power supply is fucking overkill. A 600/550 Watt would be perfectly fine
>>
>>60921612
>no. It doesn't work that way
It works that way when morons in this thread start posting benchmarks without source and then entire thread devolves into shitposting when someone ask for a source and the moron refuses to provide one. This has happened multiple time already.

I went for Ryzen over Intel because I do more than just gaming. I like to have a lot of tabs open and things running because I'm autistic or something and I don't want my house to burn down. Plus I'm probably gonna get into editing down the line. Don't really care about the hyper gaymen sound shit headphones because that's gay as shit. Other than that I just like the keyboard and mouse.

How important is it to reinstall your OS if you're changing motherboards? /v/ says you will get significant problems if I keep my current installation.

Nice build OP
>>
>>60921508
1080 ti can play a fair few games at 4k 60fps, but it's not really a huge 4k card like the Titan XP. Still fine.
i7 is fine as well. Ryzen is good too for different things. Pick whatever you want depending on what you need. People make a big deal out of it but a lot of it comes down to brand preference and the fuckers on this general love memeing over it.
RAM is fine, you could get cheaper ones at lower frequency and it won't really affect performance, but if you really want 3200 then it's only around 20-30 bucks more.

Some recommendations besides that:
- Get an aftermarket 1080 ti. iirc founders edition ones tend to have worse thermals
- Power supply is overkill, you can get PSUs just as good for much less. Look for around 550-600w like the other anon says, gold and fully modular, you can save like 60+ bucks.
- That case just looks really expensive. Not my specialty, buy what you want, but it just seems very expensive, you can get some killer cases for less I think.
>>
>>60921674
Depends on your OS. W10 is actually very good at swapping between Mobo. And so is W8. W7 down or Linux? Best to reinstall your OS.
>>
>>60921570
>>60921612
Yeah it would really only be gaming, I read reviews saying that mobo is frowned on? I don't care about frame rates of 60, so it can do 4k at 60. As the

Ryzen's AM4 platform just needed some time to mature. 90% of the problems have been ironed out by now.
>>
>>60921757
More of a couple years ago I understood it as the i7 was "da best" and now the Ryzen is turning against the memes
>>
>>60921373
I would recommend getting the 6GB version.
I'm using 3.2GB of my 4GB Rx 570 while playing doom at 1080p Ultra, and check the reviews of that monitor, for that price you should always be sure.

>>60921650
Oh it´s you again. looks great. just remember to check the QVL memory support for that specific MoBo. And remember to get some intake fans. (or maybe your case comes with some?)

>>60921508
just seems like you´re overspending IMO. that case is too freaking expensive, and so is the PSU. Consider ryzen if you´re not gaming above 120Hz, since the plataform will last a few years of updates and the higher core/thread count will ensure future gaming performance.

>>
>>60921869
Can you explain to me the logic behind a 250GB SSD? Is it notable at that price point?
>>
>>60921972
250GB is manageable for light users like myself. I keep several older titles and two modern titles downloaded. I also have space for all of my normal files and programs.

I no longer recommend HDDs, they're slower, will not last as long as the current SSDs, and are less reliable. I would only pick up an HDD if you cannot afford a 250GB SSD, or if you needed mass storage.

In that case I'd recommend any sized Hitachi 7200rpm HDD.

Well the Core i7 950 is too old to update. You will need to assemble an entire new machine for a noticable difference.

This build is $840, and will run twice as fast. The video card matches the CPU in performance. Plenty of PSU wattage for some CPU overclocking.

This probably won't really be built until the fall, so we'll see how the 1080 ti price goes. I'm also still iffy between 7700k and 1700x for 4k@60. Maybe I'll just go 1440p whatever.

>>
I forgot to ask, How common is it to build for 4k and dial back and fourth to 1440p for different games? Knowing I can just do that would make me a lot less silly.
>>
>>60922127
The 1400 is a shitty rec, I agree. The 1500X is like $20 more and a solid 10-15% more powerful due to the higher clockspeeds and more cache. The 1600 at $220 is the real winner though if it's attainable.

>>60922132
You're thinking too narrowly. Just because he'll be bottlenecked by a 1050Ti doesn't mean that it automatically makes sense to NOT spend 40 more dollars for 50% more cores and threads. A good handful of games will also benefit from more threads. 1600 or bust. If the 1400 and the 1500X were say, $140 and $160 respectively I might agree, but they're just too close in price to not spring for the 1600.
>>
>>60922102
Obviously the Prime.
>>
>>60922158
My bad! I meant the 1500X is best matched with the GeForce GTX 1070.

Uh yeah I was going to say.
Nvidia driver doesn't have the same issues on the 4core Ryzens that it does with any 6+ core CPU.

A 1500X @ 4GHz is +/- 5% gaming performance of the i7-7700(non-k), which paces well with the 1070.

This is complete newfaggy nonsense. These boxes you're putting the CPU/GPU combinations in won't even be valid in year, maybe less when Vega GPUs comes out.

1600 or bust. Stop listening to anyone recommending a 1400 or 1500X.

With 4c/8t, in 3 or 4 years you'll be like someone with an i5-3570K getting wrecked with CPU bottlenecks while the person who sprung for the 3770 or 3770K is still cruising. This is even more of a no-brainer because the 1600 is only a few $ more. Forget the 1400 and 1500X.

I know you're making recommendations by pricepoint and I'm trying to tell you why that's always been a lazy and shortsighted way to make builds. This is precisely why logicalincrements has gone to shit.

If you can't afford a 1600 then you need to figure out a way to trim $40 off the rest of the build. This is usually so fucking trivial I just cringe every time I see some lame 1400/1500X build paired with a bunch of fat that could be trimmed.

6 cores and 12 threads for $220. You're crazy if you don't buy a 1600.

I'm getting the parts for my first decent pc ever, but i know nothing.
This is what i've assembled with the help of some kind anons.

I want to be able to play any game on the market and stream while doing it, other than that it'll mainly be used for watching chinese cartoons.
At current i can barely run skyrim at low res and lowest settings, i want to play modern AAA titles like witcher 3 like everyone fucking else.

I want to optimize this build as much as possible because poorfag, but i'm not willing to give up the power i need to do any of that, so if it takes me a while to get the cash together, so be it.
It's already down to 2k from 2.5k.

Again, i've never built a PC before because i haven't had the cash, so i don't know what else i might need. I didn't even think about fan controllers until i saw the listing, and i don't know if i need one or not, or if i can just plug them in and let them run.

Putting together a build for the first time ever. I don't care about 4k or even 1440p. Going for a solid 1080/60. Mostly play Final Fantasy 14, indie shit, and Grand Strategy. Currently wondering about 2 different builds:
https://pcpartpicker.com/list/xsCqM8 or https://pcpartpicker.com/list/bjCqM8

The first build needs a mobo but I have no idea which to pick. The plan from here for either is to add another stick of RAM and a GPU later on in the year. I have two GPUs that I can use in the meantime a GTX 950X and an R9 270X but I dunno which one to slot in. Thought, tips, replacement parts?

There will always be a bottleneck somewhere unless your CPU GPU outstripes the requirement and setting of the game. With that combo, there should be no bottleneck unless is 1080p144 (CPU bottleneck) or 1440p144 (GPU bottleneck) or 4k60 (GPU).

Ryzen stomps all over the i5 at pretty much everything while also being better value for the money.
The Ryzen chips are also on an all new platform that won't be killed until 2020. And even with the 6 core, there's lots of upgrade room with the 8 cores, and the upcoming Zen 2 chips.
By contrast the Intel i5 uses an older LGA1151 platform that's long in the tooth now and due to be replaced soon, and doesn't have much of an upgrade path

no. STX is pretty much manufacturer only at this point. The smallest thing you can make at the moment on the consumer market is mini-ITX

Everything?
Why are you going for DDR3, 2 HDDs and a shitty monitor? Get G4560, cheapest B250 mobo with 4 dimm slots, 2x4GB 2400MHz RAM and IPS 60hz monitor (23" or bigger)

>>
>>60924557
not LTX, ITX. Capital i.
anyways, ITX motherboards are often more expensive and have more sacrifices over a more conventional mATX or ATX motherboard. With ITX, it's generally recommended to grab a board with built in wifi since size and wifi-capability is often the main reason for building it.
>>
>>60924504
yeah it's much better. one thing: do yourself a favour and get at least 1tb hdd (barely more expensive than 500gb) and DO NOT get 5400rpm since it's way slower and shouldn't be used in a pc. P300 1TB is only 45$.

as for the monitor: you can filter for IPS panel on pcpartpicker: https://pcpartpicker.com/products/monitor/#p=1&r=192001080&H=0,61&W=1500,2450&sort=price&page=1 as I said I recommend 23"-24", since it's basically the same price and bigger screen size is always better. check if you can fin Samsung S24F350, it has good reviews and flicker-free technology.

Was thinking of getting a 1080ti but now leaning more towards a 1070 since I only need/can go up to 60fps with this monitor + I've read some shit about a 1080ti being bottlenecked by the CPU (don't really get what that means).

I play GTA:O, PUBG, FO4, games like that etc. but will probably end up playing a bunch of other games too.

Currently I can get most settings on high for most games but would like to push to ultra.

1070 the way to go? Not gonna wait for Volta since I want better performance now, plus I could always sell and upgrade later anyway.
>>
So I want to offer a facebook machine to my mum.
I'd go for a mini ITX setup with a pentium G4560 and a 500gb SSD

Is a dedicated GPU necessary, to occasionally watch HD vids on youtube? If not, what's a good 1151 mobo with integrated graphics?
>>
Been waiting 5 years now to upgrade. Seems like there's always something better every year, so I wait for the price to drop and but the time that happens there's something new that I want. So at this point, should I just wait for Vega to be release and see if other high end GPUs drop in price or just fucking upgrade now and get it over with? I've been wanting to upgrade to an i7 6700k but now the i7 X series is announced but dunno how long I'll be waiting for that to release. I just wanna play these new games but don't want to buy hardware that will be obsolete within 2 years
>>
>>60925204
Kaby-Lake X is overpriced trash, not for you
If it's a CPU that lasts you want you don't need to shell out $350 for a 4 cores CPU, you can always spend $200 on a 6 cores and it'll be good to go for the next few years.
Vega seems to be pretty soon, but you can always get a 1080(ti) right now if you're that impatient, i doubt Vega is going to be a comeback in the GPU market the same way Ryzen was (otherwise, we'd knew it)

Emulators/Dwarf Fortress I'm still saving money until cyber Monday to buy a new PC. I'd definitely pay $200 more for the single threaded performance if I had to. It's really that bad? I've got a 5 year old laptop with similar specs and it's running 10 just fine.

hlep
i wanted to go for a u12s but they stopped selling it here
>>
>>60926082
U12S is overrated and overpriced. Look at Thermalright TRUE Spirit Power/Direct, Macho Rev. B, Cryorig H7 and Scythe Fuma and Mugen 5.

It's not as if you need windows to watch netflix and shitpost. And with a netbook-tier CPU even if you CAN run windows, a light-weight Linux will make everything that much smoother.
>>
>>60925640
Good. I don't know much about monitors though. The rest is fine.
>>
>>60926161
Well shit, guess it's time to download Lubuntu.
>>
>>60926114
Get a 1070, 1080 or wait for Vega/Volta.
The rest is still fine, upgrade to 16GB RAM if needed only.

>>
>>60926114
I doubt the 4690k even oveclocked could sustain 144hz in games so you might wanna get a 7700k
But get a 1080ti first. A 1070 won't be able to sustain 1440p144hz and neither would a 1080. See if your CPU can keep up with it and if it can't then do get a new one.
>>
>>60926218
>t. retard
The 120mm version is overpriced and overrated you autistic fuck, go look up the latest reviews.
>rgb leds
Not a single cooler i listed has any leds whatsoever. Take your shitposting and aztism back to >>>/b/ you retarded fuck, this is a technology board.
>plastic
Everything is plastic you retarded cunt.
>>
>>60925148
That cpu has an igpu so a dedicated is unnecessary. Motherboards don't have graphics cards, and a 500gb ssd seems like overkill.
>>
>>60926210
>>60926244
Thanks for the help. I'll wait for Vega and then decide on the GPU, but might end up with a 1080ti.
Do you maybe have a recommendation for a display?
>>
>>60921650
>598s

Comfy as fuck my dude
>>
>>60926329
No, i'm looking for an upgrade myself. Read that Asus makes good ones. High-end is overpriced as fuck and midrange is mostly TN only, but i don't want TN ever again, idk about you.

What should I connect my anti static strap to?

Don't black cases have paint on?
>>

Is it possible to change just the fan on the stock Ryzen cooler? Or am I better off upgrading the whole thing?

Looking to overclock and want something that's more effective and quieter if there recommendations. Not too concerned with budget, but I'd prefer to air cool.
>>
>>60926539
Just get a new cooler man
>>
>>60926539
It's possible but not really worth it, you're better off buying a new cooler
>>
>>60926550
>>60926562
Will do, what would you recommend?
Was thinking the Cryorig H7 but that doesn't seem like a huge upgrade, might grab whatever Noctua will fit.
>>
>>60926637
H7 is fine
>>
>>60926659
Is there anything that's a worthwhile step up from the H7?
I want to just grab something top of the line now and never have to worry about it again.
>>
>>60926735
Noctua C14
Make sure it fits your case before you buy it.
>>
Would you people recommend R5 blackout edition?
>>
>>60926806
no.
>>
Are Be Quite Pure Wings 2 good? They're on sale in my local store. I use a regular R5.
>>
>>60926884

>>
>>60926842
It's the same but the white parts are now black instead
So just as good as the R5
>>

Thanks.
>>

They're quieter than the stock R5 fans and also look pretty rad, what's their price in your local store?

I wanted to build a new PC and there's even a motherboard on the way but someone bought all AMD video cards except 550. I'm very sad right now and I want you all to know that.

>>

$8 for a 140mm fan?
If so, get one and add it at the front, but considering the R5 already has two 140mm any more than that would be a waste of money
>>
>>60927061
>any more than that would be a waste of money
by that i mean any more than 2 at the front and 1 at the back
>>
>>60926905
The R5 is trash anyways. You got memed. The only reason it was recommended is its understated looks.
Unfortunately, in practice, it looks like a PC case from the mid-90s rather than 2017.
It's mediocre to build in, but holy shit is it ugly in practice. You know why PC cases started looking more and more loud? Because people want computers they can actually look at as a piece of art, not some ugly bland box they hide in a cabinet.
>>
>>60927061
>>60927072
Yes, 140mm. Alright, thanks for the advise.

Asus PG279Q
Acer x271hu

Or their Freesync variant. 2 of the best 1440p144hz monitors money can buy at the moment.

I just watched a video on watercooling gpu's, and discovered for the first time the existance of stock thermal paste between the gpu and its cooler.

Do you guys ever replace the stock thermal paste on your gpu's? I don't intent to change my cooler out but I usually swap my cpu's paste every few years, seems like I should have always been doing my gpu also
>>
>>60927396
i might be wrong but 4.0Ghz on a 4790 sounds like OC'ing
>>
>>60927456
That would void warranty so no
>>
>>60927456
Only do it when your GPU warranty runs out. It is pretty easy to fuck it up. Also there is really no need to do so desu.
>>
Any reason why my bios when set to DRM frequency auto would put my 2400mhz RAM at 2133mhz instead? I just noticed it after a year. Goddamn.
>>
>>60927539
Offical DDR4 spec is 2133 clock, anything over that is an overclock. Thank god your motherboard doesn't overclock your components on it's own.
>>
>>60927572
I never knew that. So even a 3200 RAM must be set to that frequency and cannot be put on auto? Alright thanks for the info.
>>
>>60927539
That'll be your motherboard being a cheap piece of shit with a native ram speed of only 2133

Shouldn't have jewed out

what the other anon said.

Drop to 1600 and get a better graphics card.

ASUS or MSI for mobos?

Haha oh wow
>>
>>60927883
Both are pretty good brands, look into the motherboard feature instead
Though Asus has some x370 motherboard that auto-update their bios (and auto-fail at it, bricking the motherboard) and MSI has noticeably longer than average boot times on both their b350 & x370 boards
>>
>>60927940
Leaning towards "ASUS PRIME Z270-A ATX LGA1151", can you speak for its quality?

why? Just go with an AM4 motherboard and an AMD Ryzen processor instead.
