This is a distro specific argument, macOS comes with many options for package managers too, such as Homebrew or Finks or MacPorts. Ubuntu has a vast number of packages while minimalist distros may not have, so it is distro specific.

There's nothing preventing you from using shell scripts on macOS, it comes with bash like any other NIX, and for GUI automation, you can obviously use something like Automator scripts.

You can obviously strip macOS down to just Darwin-core and then use it like any OpenDarwin system too, but I agree that this would defeat the purpose of using macOS in the first place. I had moved from Windows to MacOSX, MacOSX had really good GUI and the robust UI/UX teem. It's primarily their perfect work which made iPhone successful. But it was until I've got redpilled and installed Ubuntu, it was the first step in my journey in the UNIX-like world, after that my daily drivers were Gentoo, FreeBSD, Debian.

The thing is that if you have a good experience with shell and know how things work you don't need half of the GUI macOS offers to a user. Linux is enormously highly customisible and configurable, you can build a system you like.
