This thread is the HD600 to the other threads HD598. The MSR7 to their M50x. The HE400i to their HE350. The K712 to their K702. The MDR-1000X to their MDR-100ABN. This thread is the true thread, the real thread.
>>
>>60908227
No, its been swapped out with the exact same chipset on 5 other usb DACs too. You're also putting your 598's in that thing so you'll be getting lower volumes and shittier sound along with the mic.
>>
Why do my msr7's have a raised plastic edge on the right earcup? it makes it really uncomfortable
>>
>>60908250
The headphone is fine; this is the sennheiser hd 598 cs which are not only easy to drive but also don't produce white noise unless the mic is plugged in. The thread "USB dongles for Mod Mic users and others" indicates that the syba usb adapter as early as January 2017 still eliminates white noise without problem.

Onboard audio is Realtek ALC 887, and I know that there is talk that realtek has compatibility issues with the modmic (I even updated it to the latest manufacturer driver).

Honestly if this doesn't work then the only options I can think of is a 100 dollar dac/amp with mic input, xonar dsx soundcard, or a new mic.

Sound cards synthesize sound and can add effects to the samples. DACs only change analog signals into digital which is why they bypass the interference inside of the computer; removing white noise (that static you hear in people's mics/your headphones).
>>
I guess my reply got lost in a previous thread, but would a O2+odac be a significant upgrade to the Fulla 2 should I decide I need more power? I don't want a Schiit Stack since I don't have space for it.

M1060 is a bit better, especially once modded. 400i is pretty bad. Also, M1060 has a 5 year warranty if shit gets fucked. Hifiman's build is one thing, but the fact that they are so shit at helping people after their product breaks is just plain dirty. Monoprice actually has decent customer service.

Tho honestly, both are bested by a HD600/650. If you can, look for a used HE560.

M1060 is only really worth it when modded imo. Audeze vegan pads add another $70 USD + ~$20 or so for modding materials. 400i is just eh.

Very technically flawed headphone, I'd call it unlistenable. And you can't fix it with EQ. Avoid.
>>
>>60908235
Can you tell me how 400i compares to HD600? Especially for weeb music.
>>
>>60910978
Most weeb music is really badly mastered, especially idol music. That stuff tends to sound better on the HD600 due to the slightly recessed treble. For stuff that's well mastered, it's a toss up. For stuff with any sort of bass emphasis, I refuse to listen to it with the HD600.
>>
>>60911014
So if I only listen to Vocaloid shit HD600 should be good enough, yes?
>>
>>60911101
You might want to look into something with even more recessed treble. Lots of vocaloid songs sound harsh even on HD600s.

I'd prefer a removable single side cable, but that isn't necessary. I'd also prefer a braided cable. A braided cable is much more important if I can't remove the cord. A right angle plug would be nice as well.
My Sony XB500s just shit their pants after 4 years of consistent use. Great headphones, but the cord was annoying as fuck and they looked like I had tires glued to my ears. I'd prefer something that won't attract a ton of attention in public or at least looks nice (like the M40).

>>
>>60912757
HE560 is for general use, RS1i for mostly metal music, Focal Spirit Pro for gaming when sound is important. DT1350 seems to work the best with a VR headset. QC25 is the go-to portable headphone, with Focal Sphear being the IEM backup when I need sunglasses. K845 is for portable home use when doing household chores. The rest I don't honestly use too much anymore.
>>
>>60913050

You can do it with any. Just need to know your target and what sort of compensation was used. If you don't have a target, don't look at any graph in detail and just go straight to the final part of equalizing the headphones with sine sweep as a reference.

>>
>>60914205
It doesn't matter. As long as you know how your target response should look like relative to the graph you are using as a reference, you can do it. I advise not touching the treble from plots. Stick to bass and midrange and then use sine sweeps to do the treble.
>>
>>60916589
>I advise not touching the treble from plots.
If you have a raw measurement or a measurement with a target curve you like, you can use plots as a reference for treble peak magnitude and width and use sine sweeps to locate the precise location of those peaks with the headphone interacting with your ears. Using the plots as reference for filter magnitude and width should save you a lot of time sine sweeping, as they'll typically be close if not exactly the same as what you hear; the locations of the peaks will usually be slightly different to your ears, though.
>>
>>60910898

I don't know if I'm the Anon you're thinking of, but I do own an NFB-11 with my HD650. There was also another Anon around the other day that has one with his LCD-3 and HD800. It costs more than a Schiit Uber stack would, and takes longer to ship to you than buying something from Schiit would, but with the quality components used it's basically the best you can get in the <$500 range if you need both an amp and DAC. As long as you don't mind it being chink-fi, but it's good, hand built chink-fi. I was reluctant to buy it at first, but I'm glad I did. I knew I'd be able to sell it off very easily if I didn't like it for whatever reason.

That's not to say you wouldn't be satisfied with a Schiit stack, though. I'm sure many people are.

Nice. How's the bass? Read it's not much but what bass is there is high quality, which i highly prefer.
Also read that MSR7 are somewhat source dependant. I'll power them off of my chinkpad and RN3P (upgrade planned) and most of my music is MP3 V0. Can this be an issue?

Even if you EQ that peak to neutral, the extremely gradual slope of the decay will still most likely make the ringing audible. You'd have to EQ it to a dip, and that's undesirable.
>>
>>60920591
>if you could discern pricing patterns in specific ranges
The paper's conclusion is that there isn't one observed.
The chart is there try to and identify common spectral features shared among the headphones and identify relation between the variables. The price and these eigenvectors are basically independent variables of the other.

>>60921241
>>60913564
>>60916564
>>60910898
Cause looks like membrane resonance.
The ringing is the dual of the sharp and narrow peak in the response at 5kHz. It is normal and no more important than what any low magnitude, high-Q peak would be: not very.
>>
>>60921241
I have to believe that the ringing wouldn't be noticeable unless and only maybe unless you're actively listening for it. I still wouldn't buy the headphone because I'd strongly question the build quality of anything from Monoprice.
>>
>>60921386
If there is an audible flaw that can't be EQ'd away, I'd say that is very important.
>>60921397
That may be true, but the fact of the matter is that it's still there.
>>
>>60913717

>>
>>60919587
Not him, but you might try disabling any EQ you may be using, either in GPM or system wide. I had a similar problem with Spotify and that solved it.
>>
>>60921435
Given an appropriate signal, a sine sweep for instance, it would easy to detect. This goes back to the usual problem, that audio folks do not know the right questions to ask.
I have to ask: what makes you so sure that this is ringing is not implied by the magnitude spike?

I haven't noticed anything odd, it's possible that some of your drivers somehow got corrupted while upating

Try runing sfc /scannow in CMD as Admin, it'll try to repair the system.

If It can't find anything I don't really know what else to say, make sure all "enhancments" are off in the System Sounds.

If you're still having issues, try booting from a USB onto a live CD, KDE Neon or something similar will do the trick.

The center magnitude of the resonance is not important. The key is looking for the spread of the peak, the inverse of the Q. The monoprice set has a much higher Q resonance around 4-5kHz.

The Q of the peak is not much higher at all.

Unsurprisingly the 800S suffers from the same problem as the larger AKG pads (K7XX), where in the "proper" position, they push into your cheek-bones.

Check to make sure you have absolutely zero equalizer settings anywhere enabled. This includes in your media player(s) as well as in Windows sound settings. If you flatten the spectral content first, that's still completely in the air. As long as there's a frequency magnitude peak, you can likely hear it with a proper test tone. My £20 sennheiser headphones are about to break so I want to get some new ones now.
I don't know that much about them so I thought you guys could help me out.
I've got a budget of about £150 and they will only be used indoors for my computer.

Also I've been having a problem where when I put anything in the USB drive at the front of my computer I start to hear a lot of crackly noise and I don't know what to do about it

Schiit Fulla 2, FX-Audio DAC-X6.
But... best to live with it, you can buy this sorta shit later. Your budget limits you to getting just headphones now.
>>
>>60930017
Saw the HD598 on amazon. But what's the difference between SR and Cs if you don't mind me asking?
>>
>>60930125
HD598/SE/SR are the same headphones, essentially. Differences are cosmetics+extracable (SE) and mic (SR).
HD598C is a completely different headphone, closed, with no relation whatsoever to HD598 other than the naming.
HD598 has built some popularity over the years, Cs are just leeching on it.
>>
>>60930125
All the headphones I listed are available in amazon.co.uk and meet your budget.

Genre or type of music doesn't dictate headphone or sound signature preference. This is especially true when you don't have a limiting factor to what you can buy. If you had, it could make sense to prioritize on the spectrum your music focuses on but even here it's impossible to generalize. Genres, artists, albums and individual tracks vary too much. If you don't know your preference to sound signature, go with something generally preferred like neutral with low bass boost. No headphone really matches that idea but I think MrSpeakers Ether might be a solid choice.

I bought a used pair of earbuds on amazon. I got the package today. The guy didn't even bother to clean his ear wax off of it. The entire package smells like smoke.
>>
>>60931640
They both have different sound signatures. You have to listen to them both and decide yourself. There's no ''x is better'' in audio. Even price is irrelevant.
>>
>>60931640
HD600 is neutral. K712 is bassier.
>>
>>60929871
Get HD558. They're a tremendous value right now at their current price, which won't last long as they're discontinued. They sound almost exactly the same as the open HD598s.
>>
>>60931640
It doesn't. k712 is a relatively well known colored headphone that's often considered worse than k702, while hd600 is the most neutral overear that doesn't have some major flaw and perhaps the most reputable headphone out there.
>>
>>60931229
>£200 though I can probably go higher
Stretch out for HD600, and that's all you're going to need.
>>
>>60922026
I like their FR and I won't mind rolled off highs as long as they extend, but that treble roll off looks like too much. How are female vocals on LCD 2? I feel that they will sound worse than on HD600.

Every headphone ever made can benefit from properly applied equalization. Of course, that doesn't mean checking a bass boost box in Windows settings. That means using measurements and sine sweeps to develop precise parametric equalization and knowing how to use a preamp to prevent clipping.

"No."

Is the Fulla 2 still worth buying at $150 (I'm in the UK) or are there better choices? Looking for an amp/DAC for around £100 to pair with my 250 ohm DT 880s
>>
>>60932140
The Fulla 2 is pretty good and cheap for something actually made in america. If you don't give a fuck about that (most people don't), there's some competitive chinese options. Look into the FX-AUDIO DAC-X6.
>>
>>60932140
A FiiO E10K is just as good, and it was the previous babby's first amp/dac until Schiit became a meme.
>>
>>60931229
HD598, but as suggested already if you can stretch for HD600 it will be worth it, currently £283.99 on Amazon. Those 2 have somewhat similar frequency response, but as owner of both HD598 and HD600, the later just sounds better in everything, HD598 is a good headphone, also extremely comfortable, but HD600 is THE headphone. If you don't know what sound signature you like then post music that you listen to, HD600 struggles with electronic music mostly. Also what will you be listening from, PC, notebook?
>>
>>60932189
>A FiiO E10K is just as good
Not comparable. Neither specs nor functionality offered.
Nice "bass boost" switch though. For that niggerbass.

>>

>Thanks. Is SMSL any good?
Don't know, can't say
>good/bad meme
Schiit's low end (fulla2, magni2, modi2) is very competitive. Anything above that is audiophoolery territory. It might actually be better, but there's no way it will actually sound better at that point. Yet, they're still very competitive in that world. Their $500 crap is pointlessly better than most $10k garbage out there.
>>
>>60931229
K612 and a Fulla 2 or something similar. Otherwise a 598 if you don't want a DAC/amp
HD600 if your limit isnt that stiff. Will need a decent amp, though your on-board may be alright. On-board audio is so wildly unpredictable that I can't really give any guarantee.
>>
>>60932204
Listening from home PC
Mostly listen to dad rock kind of music like Rush and Yes but I listen to other things too like metallica and I also like retrowave like lazerhawk for example.

I've been looking at stuff like the Sennheiser's that you listed but also the AKG 702/712 and Beyerdynamic DT stuff

I'd probably need a DAC/amp too.
>>
>>60932215
>Is SMSL any good?
Unless youre comfortable with dealing in Chi-Fi mixed back territory and DOA units, I'd stay away. But from amazon if you have to. They don't have a particularly good track record with anything and their lifespans seem pretty low.
>>
>>60922594
what more did you expect for that price?
>>
>>60932261
>>60932396
I'm going to buy the Fulla 2, this is likely going to be my last amp/DAC as I don't see myself going beyond mid-fi.
>>
What would be good headphones for someone who can only hear out of their left ear, I can't hear at all from my right ear.

I am deaf but only suffer from amplitude lose not any frequency loss.

I am guessing there isn't anything particularly good for me.
>>
I used to have the below headphones and they just broke at on of the sides completely.

https://www.amazon.com/JVC-HARX700-Precision-Sound-Headphones/dp/B0013OWPV4

They apparently don't sell them anymore retail so what's the best newer headphone to get for this price point? I bought these fuckers for like $24.99

If moving into an entire new tier is the only option that's okay, but I'd like a cheap budget headphone if possible.
>>
>>60934510
Koss KSC75 or Koss PortaPro. They have the same drivers. If you want to prioritize sound over design the KSC75 are more accurate because they don't clamp as hard as the bassy PortaPros.

Holy shit they sound so fucking similar.

XB1000's reach a little deeper into bass but don't have the more airy sounding treble that my X2's have, and it is sharper around 8k. (Which I eq'd down)

Love em both, though I can wear the X2's all day since they have breathable pads

Correct me if I'm wrong, but planers aren't the best for bassheads right? I've never heard one and am really curious about their sound, butdon't want to spend more than $500 on any headphones really.

>>60934417
Any headphone can be paired with an eq that can push all the audio into one ear, so it's really up to how much you want to pay.
>>
>>60934650
Buy a lot of cheap shit. KSC75, KZ ZS5, that sort of thing.

Fidelio X2's, since you probably want a little excitement like bass instead of a super flat signature. If you don't want bass, get the Sennheiser HD 600 oe ATH 900x.
7.1 surround is a meme, a good open back headphone can match the soundscape and just sounds better across the board.

What is the best HM5 headband replacement I can get ? The replacement brainwavz sent me got lost in traffic and they don't wanna ship out another one, so I want somehting that won't break again, pref <$80.
>>
>>60934827
Look into reviews of HD600, k712, Fidelio X2. Decide what's best for you.
I went with HD600, because they're the most neutral, which means they try to reproduce the recordings correctly and not try to add color the sound.
>>
>>60934827
>Wired 7.1 Surround (Is Virtual Better/ Same?)
Just buy good headphones and use a software solution for surround like Razer Surround, which is free. The catch to Razer Surround is it installs Synapse which is basically spyware; just block Synapse in your firewall and problem is solved.
>>
>>60932384
I think HD600 will do good. I listen a bit to old stuff like Tom Jones Lust for life, lazerhawk as well. They really bring vocals and guitar in the music up close for your enjoyment. Here is the review of HD6xx line by a guy who listens a lot to metal https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yV2wUtFcCv8. Altho the best way to judge is to go to store and try them out yourself or to use amazon return policy. I was thinking between them and DT800 for one and a half hour in store swapping them, HD600 won for me in the end. DT880 sounded nice, and very 'clean' due to prominent highs, but for reasons unknown to me at that time they missed some parts of music that HD600 did not, DT800 has treble roll off before peaking at 10k. You may need an amp for them, they will probably go loud enough with your audio card, they did on my mac book, but with amp they will sound cleaner, eps in bass. If you also ask for an amp in store and compare them with it and without, altho it may be hard to notice in a noisy store. Don't really bother with dac unless it's included in amp or you get hiss from your PC or any distortion. Overall HD600 are good and I can recommend them to you for any genre except electronic music but you don't listen to it, imo their only weakness.
>>
>>60934650
>>60934709
Why? There is no reason unless you get IEM for portability. You won't get anything better in that price range unless you go for closed headphones, around 400$, or straight to HD800 and EQ them to your liking.
>>
>>60935000
I should mention you need to login to Synapse once for it to work and only then do you block Synapse in your firewall. Razer Surround will continue to work with Synapse blocked.
I've used Razer Surround in games and with 7.1 encoded anime in the past and it works pretty well.
>>
>>60935011
>electronica
I listen to demoscene music (does that count? MODs and such) all the time, and I love how the HD600 does it.
I suspect you mean it doesn't niggerbass, but EQ will give you as much as you want. I just don't like that, so I use it flat.

By bass I mean sub bass, on this track https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Die49qzCehA I never get enough of it, esp in the begining. I listen on moderate volumes and never feel the need to crank it up, but this one is the case and it's just not right. Mind you I have no problems with HD600 listening to 80% of my music, but sometimes these things pop up and I don't get full enjoyment out of them. I tried EQ, boosting from 20k to 80k but when I was reaching satisfactory levels in the term of the amount shit started to sound distorted and one note. HD800 did much better and didn't care about EQ, since they needed less in sub bass, but they are expensive as fugg and I would rather get a pair of bookshelves, which I will once I move to a new flat. Here are other tracks that I had to crank up the volume and felt lacking with.

Oh, I'm familiar with it (necrodancer) and like it.
I listen to it at a very low volume though. I'd rather not go deaf.
>when I was reaching satisfactory levels in the term of the amount shit started to sound distorted and one note.
Did you lower the volume of everything else, to avoid clipping?
>>
>>60926583
its a slightly more tame version of 701
>>
>>60935394
>Did you lower the volume of everything else, to avoid clipping?
Yes ofc, thats a no brainer. I also had the Element for my amp/dac so I had no problem volume wise. It's just bass was loose and one noted, I don't have a better description for this, eps in comparison to excellent mids and highs.
