Yes you can unlock and root them, the popular models have plenty of custom ROMs available for them. Getting the unlock code used to take up to a few weeks but I think Xiaomi have improved the process because I've heard many people say the got their code within days or even hours after requesting it.

MIUI is still quite far away from stock android, that's why many replace it with a stock android-based custom ROM. Some people seem to like it though and it does have quite a lot of nice features not in stock android.

Alright so I have a question. About 9 months ago I fucked up really bad. I was still attached to my parents phone plan with AT&T and because of that ended up with an AT&T Variant GM930A Galaxy S7. I paid the phone off and about 7 months ago I unlocked it and left for T-Mobile on my own plan. My issue is the fucking massive amounts of bloat AT&T installed and the phones refusal to upgrade to Nougat even with the AT&T Sim INSIDE my phone and my T-Mobile Sim removed.
