At what price point would you start paying for 1gbps internet?

$200 a month?
$150 a month?
$100 a month?

Nothing?

I'm paying $95 a month and feel like if it were too much more expensive I probably wouldn't have it. It's nice, but most sites can't use it, so it's really only good for steam games or similar.
>>

>>
>>60875015
That's backwards, 50 down and 2 up.
>>
>>60874959
I've had gigabit before but no server managed to max out my connection, downgraded back down to 100mbps for like 1/3 the price and didn't notice any difference.
>>
What do you even use that for? I pay 39€/month for 200/20 and seems enough for everything.

I live in Australia. I used to pay $200 a month for Telstra 120KB/s & Foxtel (shitty TV service). Thankfully, I'm paying about $40 a month for 0.5Mbps now.
I'd gladly go back to paying $200 a month for gigabit speeds.
>>
I'm paying $60/mo for 300Mb/s, I could do $70 for a gigabit, but I'd be required to opt-in for wonderful automated marketing emails and phone calls every other day.

Sorry, but no thanks. 300Mb/s is fine and has no data cap for 3 years so I'm set for now.

90 bucks for 150 down and I think 10 up. Might be 15. My actual speed is 270/12 though so I'm actually getting more than what I pay for. Can't really complain since it's cheaper than century links best offer in my area of 15/7 for like $10 more.. Giga internet would be great if servers actually pushed those speeds. Steam and good torrents seem to be the only thing where it's really beneficial.

Sucks on the upload front, you'd think if they can deliver 800mbps + they could also deliver at least 200-500mbps upload.

And only 50mbps on wifi? Did they give you ancient 802.11G piece of shit or something?

My ISP gives me an 802.11AC 3x3 AC1750 router.

I've gotten over wifi 400mbps from it.
>>
Paying $60 for synchronous 1gbit, would probably pay up to $100. But I really don't want to downgrade from fiber to anything else, 1gbit or not.
>>
>>60882030
is internet speeds of 1gbit even possible without fiber?
>>
>>60882058
Yes, DOCSIS 3.1 is 10gbps down and 1gbps up which would allow you to provision customers for 1gbps down and up.

On top of that, currently being finalized is Full Duplex DOCSIS 3.1 which is 10gbps download and upload.

You also have G.Fast which is essentially gigabit DSL over distances under 300 feet. and XG-Fast which has been tested as delivering synchronous 10gbps over ~400 feet using copper.

So yes, it is possible, but it's all still very new and limited deployment, if deployed at all.
>>
>>60882058
Downstream should be possible for cable (docsis 3.1+ etc), but I don't know if it's feasible/sustainable, because the bandwidth is usually shared.

Either way, I'd rather have 300/300 fiber than 1000/100 cable or some shit.

Yes, I upgraded from 300/300mbps because with 5 people in the house all using the internet I would get complaints if I started a decent sized download.

This way even if I am downloading something huge it really doesn't matter since it most likely wont be using my full bandwidth at once, I usually max out at 500-700mbps to MOST servers, and that still leaves 300-500mbps for everyone else in the house to do whatever they want.

tldr; gigabit is great for multiple simultaneous heavy users.

>>
>>60883497
Cancel your service and if they ask why tell them because they wont offer you new customer pricing.

You'll either get offered the pricing right then in there, or you'll get a call back in a few days offering it.

Set your service shut off date for like 2 weeks in advance so they have a chance to give you a call before your service is shut off.

Worst case you switch over to some bullshit other ISP for a month and then switch back a month later as a new customer.

Not really, most suburbs and urban areas of Australia have at least 5-10mbps, and more populated areas connected to NBN can have up to 100mbps.

$140 is also outrageous, there are people paying less IN australia and getting 20x the speed.
>>
>>60883768
Do you actually get those speeds?
>>
>>60883973
I get 80/35. It's dependent on how far you are from the node. They can tell you what you can expect when you call up.

Holy shit!
Were you downloading on SSD?
Also, is your Ethernet port on PC 1G or 10G?
>>
>>60878209
Is that on a phone?

No, my phone maxes out at about 300-400mbps.

>>60886138
It was to an SSD, but my HDD can do the same speeds.
And it's a 1gbps NIC.
>>
>>60876058

Modern developers are so fucking lazy.
I had to delete Hitman 2016 because it was nearly 70 fucking GB for 7 fucking levels. Are you fucking real?
>>
>>60886220
It's literally just textures.
As we strive towards better and better quality textures file sizes will increase exponentially.
>>
>>60886220
>>60886243
As a follow up.
Dwarf Fortress is only about a 32 MB file even though it simulates a hell of a lot more stuff than most modern games.
>>
>>60886185
That's not 4G LTE, its just poor network conditions.
>>
>>60886313
What the fuck does it matter if this is the network conditions 100% of the time for the past year?

Fuck off
>>
>>60886185
You HDD can do 100 MB/s+ ?
Have you ever benchmarked you HDD?

Yup

I have 1000/100 (upstream limited by gpon type)

I pay $99.95 a month and because its a teleco have to also purchase telephone service.

I agree, most website can't push to us. Hell, our pipe is fatter than most websites.

I'm on GPON as well and get full 1gbps upload.

Seems like your ISP just doesn't wanna deploy enough splits for their customers.

Here's another test for you, oh look at that BLAZING fast ping.

Still garbage speeds.
>>
>>60878631
No you didn't, the Xbone has a 1Gbps NIC and there's just no way to push data through it any faster than that.
>>
>>60886376

Sigh.

http://www.ppc-online.com/blog/why-gpon-needs-to-change-introducing-ngpon2

Upstream is a little over 1.2 Gbps shared over 32 and as much as 64 nodes. They cannot guarantee anything close to 1 Gbps up, so instead offer what they can.
>>
>>60886489
>shared over 32 and as much as 64 nodes
Ugh, that's the problem, they're too cheap to upgrade infrastructure.

And you're splitting only 2.4gbps download between those same 32 and 64 customers, so you're not exactly going to get too many 1gbps users on that sort of split arrangement.

My ISP does 4 or 8 customer splits per GPON link. That easily allows everyone to have 1gbps down and up and not worry about congestion.
>>
>>60886348
Are these speeds common in today's HDDs, or yours is somewhat special?
>>
>>60886540
Should be fairly common for any 7200 RPM drive these days, a 5400RPM drive might have some trouble, but even that should manage close enough to 120MB/s that you're still more likely to be limited by the server you're download from than the HDD itself.
>>
>>60886540
not him but yeah, that's unexceptional. HDDs have poor latency, cause by the heads needing to move and the drive having to wait for the proper portion of the platter to come underneath them. That's why the IOPS is shit compared with SSDs. But latency doesn't matter if you're just doing purely sequential reads or writes of large blocks of data. And the massive bit densities on large drives mean that a lot of platter goes under the heads per unit time, so 150-200MB/s sequential is no big deal for a large 7200 rpm drive.

>>60886569

Thanks a lot.

250$+ Too bad its actually not possible, unless i start digging myself.
>>
>>60886807
>unless i start digging myself
Cheaper than having them do it, can be as high as $10-15,000 per km in suburban areas anyway, i'm sure rural is a bit cheaper, but you'd still easily be over $5,000 per km i'd expect.
>>
>>60882543
Paying for transit can be expensive.

lol what the fuck australia.

I thought you guys had basic human rights :^)
